Thank you for this wonderful interview! It is done so professionally, I would say. Masanao-san is one of my favourite maiko, so I'm super happy to have come across this video. And I especially liked your questions :) There were some minor inaccuracies but it's understandable since not everyone who watches this interview is a well versed geisha fan, so I really enjoyed it! Ookinii~
Very good questions, and I like this interviewing style. Calm, natural and documentary, without too much artificial drama (which is very common nowadays in TV shows). The camera man has done a good job too, he captured some delicate facial expression of the young girl, very lovely. How often do Maikos do their hairs? Also everyday? It could be so time-consuming. I like their rule of "no mobile phone". Yes, today's modern tools is a great help to so many things. When I shot a beautiful flower, Google lens will tell me immediately what it is. In the past, students of botanic may have to go to library, look up in many books to find out the facts about this flower. Almost every thing comes too easy, and people no longer cherish it. I usually forget the names of flowers, partly because it is too easy to look it up again. Old school students need to spend mind and passion to get to know something, exactly the mind and passion count to the value of mankind. We are somehow losing this kind of value in modern life. It's good to know the young girl likes her life as a maiko, I wish this art of living will hand down in many generations to come.
The information about the Pochiri was a little off. I think some things got lost in translation. For example, pochiri are passed down from generation to generation of the okiya owners. So for example, a Pochiri might have been owned by the same okiya for many generations of okaa-san. It's not passed from maiko to maiko and okiya normally own several pochiri for their girls. They're incredibly expensive, made by master artisans, some pochiri you'll see have been damaged and taken into artisans to be repaired or even modified to have the damage become part of the design. Pochiri are the most expensive item a Maiko wears by a long shot! ^^ I also like that you guys included the information about the tourists. It's totally not okay to chase after maiko and geiko or try to stop them. It can be dangerous for them on top of getting them into trouble. You don't want to be the maiko or geiko that's always late, so while people might think it's rude for these girls and women to ignore their requests, it's something they have to do and shouldn't be taken personally. I've heard that approaching them respectfully late at night when their engagements are normally done and they're heading back, you may have more luck in asking them for a photo, again, respectfully, but again, if they deny or ignore you, respect their decision ^^
I think the translation is accurate as we had a Japanese native speaker do the captions. Axel's summary might be a bit off, and Masanao didn't really go into major detail on it. It's not very clear, but I think she is aware that it belongs to the okiya, but what she meant by it being 'handed down from an older geisha' is that this pochiri was worn by her previously and now it 'belongs' to her until she inevitable hands it over to the next up and coming maiko. But thank you for adding so much additional detail! You know your stuff! :)
@@EYExplore Ah I see, for some clarification though, it's not passed down from maiko to maiko, it was never owned by a maiko, always the okaa-san, she probably meant that her older geiko sisters wore it when they were maiko, though all the girls in the okiya would have worn every piece at least once. For example, that's not the only pochiri she'll wear through her career, the okaa-san picks out the outfits for the maiko and matches the pochiri with the outfit^^ I liked how she pointed out that they're told to protect it at all costs, I've heard that Okaa-san will tell their maiko that if they're going to fall, to fall backwards so the pochiri will be protected, it's fun to hear her version XDMasanao-san is super cute ^^ She's a welcome addition to the little kagai of Gion Higashi ^^ I did really really enjoy this interview, I like that you guys didn't try to slip your own interpretations in and were sure to include the captions so all the extra stuff she included could be understood as well ^^
Great interview, but can this maiko understand english? She seems to answer some questions before hearing the translation! I always assumed maiko only spoke Japanese. Thanks for this.
Without pictures, these exotic masters of intriguing culture would have vastly less exposure and i plan to go to Kyoto for a minimum of 1 month. Because these of breathtaking pictures and interviews. I can't imagine thinking about Japan with those posters i see promoting themselves. Or images of a maiko framed by the contrast of cutting-edge technology. Ambassadors of culture that i can't believe they aren't subsidized by the government. Photos by tourists and paparazzi is a great compliment. How is that invasion of privacy? She's made herself a spectacular spectacle. Take limousines and refuse interviews.
Excellent interview. Very informative and very interesting. Thank you for giving us an inside look of a Geisha
Our pleasure! Thanks for watching! :)

Thank you!! Maiko set their hair once a week. They have to sleep on a special 'pillow' which is like a block of wood.
@@EYExplore Yes in the video she told about her wooden pillow with a cushion on top. I was just wondering how often they wash their hair.
@@ellenzhao Once a week! :)
WHY THIS INTERVIEW IS SO UNDERRATED???!!
Great question! Perhaps we didn't reach the right audience.
Amazing interview, thank you
Thanks!!
really interesting ! thank you for this interview :)
Thank you for watching! :)
Please let her know that i am proud of her. May the sun never darken upon them
Thanks for the kind words! :)
This was interesting. Thanks for sharing 😀
Glad to hear it! :)
Toujours excellent Axel !

@@moushimoushi8963 Glad you liked the interview! :)
Very graceful! Why does she say ‘dosu’ instead of ‘desu’?
It's the Kyoto dialect. :)
Very interesting, good questions. Liked the explanation of them being made late by pesky tourists.
Yeah, that was well explained and hopefully gives some perspective on that aspect of Kyoto and Gion.
interesting sober and good interview
the translator is french ?
Yes, Axel is French!
Great interview, but can this maiko understand english? She seems to answer some questions before hearing the translation! I always assumed maiko only spoke Japanese. Thanks for this.
Yes, she does. There are some English-speaking Geisha. Some are more fluent than others.
Yes, I think she can speak little bit🥰
Hello
Hi! :)
What a sweet face she has!!
She is very beautiful!! :)
PORCELAIN.
Her countenance?
The interviewer is abrasive.
Thanks! :)
祇園東 まん 満彩尚
That's right! :)
I hate how tourists are making a dent in the art of photography by invading the Geisha's privacy and doing a poor job in general 😔
You mean on the streets? It's not good, but I also understand why they do it. I think people need to be educated!
@@EYExplore Yes the people on the streets
