    A couple of months after completing my beginners course and after trying a few different risers of comparable price, I chose the SF forged + in dark matt grey. I would agree with pretty much everything said in the video - I have found the riser to be an excellent choice which has allowed me to grow and progress to achieve my first class classification in just over 8 months of shooting. I paired my riser with the SF premium wood/fibre limbs and found the riser offered a nice amount of adjustment in terms of reducing/increasing poundage OTW as my strength built up in my back/shoulder muscles. I started with Easton platinum arrows (1916 spine) and 32lb limbs (which at first I had wound out but wound in later) which I found to be a good match - the supplied pressure button is good enough and is supplied with three interchangeable springs (soft, medium, hard) - I cannot imagine anyone using the medium or hard springs though as when tuning my bow, the soft was perfectly adequate once adjusted correctly. I found the matt finish to be much more durable than the gloss - although both are anodised, my Dad purchased the gloss black and his compared to my matt grey has suffered many more scuffs and scratches.
    I would also agree on grip - it does feel slim in comparison to other bows. This isn't a problem as such, but certainly is worth noting and testing for yourself. One flaw I have noticed with my particular bow is that the main stabiliser/long rod mount point is very slightly skewed to the left, which means when you attach your long rod/stabiliser set up, it points to the left by a few mm - I can only notice this when looking through the bow with an arrow nocked however it does not effect performance at all.
    Last of all, I would strongly recommend pairing this bow with a good quality string - do not try and save money when selecting your string! Adding a high end/custom made string with nocking points made from serving thread will seriously improve your bow and shooting in general. I'm fortunate to belong to an archery club where a couple of Olympic recurve archers train regularly and are always great for advice and I cannot stress enough the importance of fitting a quality string to this (or any for that matter!) bow.
    Happy shooting!

    I have been shooting the Forged Plus with Hoyt limbs for more than a year now. One note: I can feel that my kit vibrates quite a bit and for quite a long time after the shot with my Hoyt limbs....to an extent that my sight screws keep on unscrewing. The vibrations are not bad for the hand, but apparently for the other parts of the bow. I have tuned it and checked the limb alignments with the tiller adjustment bolts ( the limbs actually got misaligned quite badly ). It helped, but eventually I had to add a damper to it to keep the vibrations down. It helped more, but has become worse recently.
    Second more important observation is that the tiller bolts of the riser eat away the fishtail of the Hoyt limbs. I can clearly see abrasion on the limbs. I cannot understand why it happens as supposedly the ILF should be a standard, but my guess is that it has to do with the bow vibrating.
    I would say that this is a robust and good looking riser that has all the extension bushings and features that most would ever need.
    Want to consider a carbon W&W riser as the next one when that day comes.

      @user-bo8yt4uc8b 7 років тому +1

      Try adding more weight to the end of the long rod before the dampener. That usually kills most of the vibration felt after the shot. Hoyt limbs shouldn't vibrate too much, since they should be quality stuff. Sight dampeners and mini limb savers on the sight bar would also help keeping the sight screws tight.

      Check your brace hight, my recurve used to vibrate and make an awful twang until I found out the recommended measurement and adjusted it to as specified by the manufacturer.
      Getting top quality stabilisers like Dionkers will make a difference.
      Its good practice to check all the screws and bolts on your bow before every shoot.

    • @timomiettinen18
      @timomiettinen18 7 років тому

      Thanks for your tip. Done that, though. Doesn't change a thing. Have doinkers on the stabs and one on the riser. That helped a bit, but it is like treating the symptom and not getting rid of the root cause. If I swap the SF limbs onto the riser, the feeling changes and they are much quieter. Strange. I heard from a pro shooter a similar comment. He had a Hoyt riser and SF limbs and they didn't match too well either.

    Lucky to get this riser last month, but the SF limbs are already sold out in local archrery stores so I bought WNS ones.
    Because of I'm originally a compound shooter, I'm very satisfied with the weight of the Forged plus.
    Nice bow for recurve beginners, but definitely I have to get a thicker grip.
    Thanks for your reviews, they helps a lot :)

  • @gglovato
    @gglovato 7 років тому +1

    Nusensei: Another note, the WNS Alpha is noticeably more expensive than the forged+ (quite more so in fact) AND does not include any accesories anymore(it's bare riser) like plunger(so it's doubly more expensive), also iirc it has different color schemes under the new name

    I did a lot of research for my first post "introduction" course bow setup ... and as you said, there are very few reviews let alone comparisons. I chose the SF forged plus based on seeing reviews and a few in the shop - for AUD 380, you get a lot for your money...very highly engineered and finished product, nice plunger too (mine is red). What really tipped the scales was the whole package of investing in a riser and sight (WN6500) that would see me through a number of limbs (went for glass over foam) as I move up the poundage. All up, the cost was OK. If and when I get "good"... then I'll move up to a win&twin with carbon risers. Check out Steve's vid review of the riser and limb option (archerysupplies) - he puts a decent rest on too...as you said, the basic one is $&@p....

    it is a good piece of metal. but I hate the little sounds coming from it. in the mid range just a little higher is Gillo G2 and this offers way more especially for bare bow. don't know whether it is available in Australia.

    I got the WNS version of this bow a few weeks ago (end of 2018) and they've updated the design a bit. The holes in the riser are more streamlined now, has less of a bridge girder look to it. In the matte gray (sort of a matte metallic warm gray) it's a really good looking bow IMO :) Would prefer a wood grip, doesn't seem like that's an option anymore.

    Hey Nusensei, would you say this riser is a good upgrade for someone like who is still using the WNS Axiom Alpha? I have been in the sport for almost 2 years and I've always thought the weight distribution on the Axiom wasn't too great

    This replacing of the old SF stock with the new WNS versions (also more expensive by £20) kinda forced my hand as I wanted something relatively new. I got the middle of the three models: Winners Premium Alpha and quite happy shooting it barebow - got sights that I didn't fancy using.
    I would recommend it as I don't expect to upgrade for a couple of years, I'm on the WNS Axiom Alpha limbs too as I just started.
    For my next set of limbs, do you think I should stick with WNS AA which are wood & fibre and get a higher poundage or do you think I should get the colour matching carbon & fibre WNS Premium Alpha limbs which - I don't mind saying - also adds more aesthetic beauty to the set?
    Love your videos O Wise Sensei!
    Greetings from the UK.

    Hello, I own the WNS Forged Elite Alpha and now that I want to shoot it bare bow now and then I am trying to figure out what weight to put on it. The one you are using here seems to balance it quite well, so my question is: Do you remember/know how much gramm the weight you were using here has?

    Thanks for another great review Nu..Just a small point..But I think they allow stabilisers for bare bow in the U.S.A...Altho' I think there is a limit on the length..Someone correct me if I'm wrong..

    • @NUSensei
      @NUSensei  7 років тому +2

      You can put any kind of weight on your bow, as long as the width of the bow unstrung does not exceed a certain diameter. This is checked by passing the judge's "ring" tool over the bow during registration. The weight I attached would be legal for barebow.

    I started out with a Premium Plus and my partner went with an Axiom Lite. Our kit was stolen after 2 months but when we got round to replacing our kit, we both went with Forged+ risers instead.
    Best decision we ever made. Got no inclination to change it yet.
    Don't suppose you can do a review on the SF Velocity and/or your Inno CXT?

    • @NUSensei
      @NUSensei  7 років тому +1

      I don't think I can get an SF Velocity anytime soon, and W&W are discontinuing the Velocity line (they're keeping the WNS Axiom, Premium and Forged - in their "Alpha" or "Plus" variants). It occurred to me that I haven't reviewed my own bow yet, so that will come.

    Many people at my club also has that riser. For the price it seems excellent. Some have had problems having the rest to stick on the matt finished ones, and the tiller adjustments can be a bit flimsy. Other than that, very good riser for beginners and recreational shooters IMO.

    • @T1cT4cGamingChannel
      @T1cT4cGamingChannel 7 років тому

      Interesting, had mine for over a year and never felt the tiller adjustment was flimsy, felt the riser is really well made and robust.

    • @user-bo8yt4uc8b
      @user-bo8yt4uc8b 7 років тому

      T1cT4c Gaming Perhaps I should have been a bit more specific. The problem I have seen with people adjusting the tiller bolts is that with the locking screws unfastened it is too easy to let the bolts turn freely into random position. The bow unstrung and the locking screws unfastened there is no resistance in the tiller bolts as in Hoyts and Win&Wins I have used.

    Is the higher res version stuck in the YT processing queue still, or did you just have a setting mishap on your side?

    • @NUSensei

      Huh, just realised that. The video was rendered in 480p, probably due to another project that I was working on and had forgotten to change the resolution before rendering. I don't have the original footage anymore, so unfortunately there won't be a high-res version. And in fairness, I was struggling with the flu, so I wasn't thinking too clearly either.

    I would like to ad some more feedback on sf forged. The total construcion is really good, but has some cons first is the arrow rest, its total garbage. Second is the grip. It is very narrow and slippery there is no way to keep your hand straight on the grip. I had to carve my own wooden grip. And as jacobsen said before me there are some vibrations but i thace them coming from the cheap sf limbs eliminating them with a limbsaver. Overall i think its the best value for money riser out there and i am very pleased with my groupings.

    • @T1cT4cGamingChannel
      @T1cT4cGamingChannel 7 років тому +1

      I agree, i found the grip too narrow and ended up padding it out with vet wrap. I also agree the rest didnt last long, so swapped that out for a MyBo one - which is great.

    • @JoshuaCairns
      @JoshuaCairns 7 років тому

      The grip that now comes with the riser is so wide you won't be able to get your fingers completely around it, it's also a universal grip instead of left or right handed. It forces your hand into somewhere between a medium and high grip. I wish mine came with a narrow grip like in the video, I'm having trouble finding a grip that works for me.

    • @mortenjacobsen5673
      @mortenjacobsen5673 7 років тому +1

      the grip on it iis useless for me the torque from the draw would pull the bow out of the desired pressure point and out to the thumb. its better to ust remove it and wrap the metal in some grip tape for tennis or badminton . keep in mind a proper grip (your hand)should not wrap any fingers around the bow . you can also use grip putty to adjust for high medium or low wrist position.

    • @JoshuaCairns
      @JoshuaCairns 7 років тому

      Not wrapping your fingers around the bow may work for stationary target archery, but that's not what I do. With my nonstandard techniques and barebow, I still group a dozen arrows in the size of an apple at 50 yards.

    • @CabbagePatch592

    This riser is popular even in our club. But there is a little "but". For people with OTF up to 34-36# it is ok, but for people 40#+ I must warn you. All risers we have in our club they have tendency to bend/twist under pressure of a bow with 40#+ OTF. This riser seems to be ok for weaker poundages, but for serious competition heavier bow setups I strongly recommend something more solid.

      @MrWizardjr9 7 років тому

      vibrations is highly subjective and ive seen lots of instances where one reviewer say a bow is dead in the hand while another say it has more vibration than they would like. that would rely on what kinds of bows the reviewer is used to shooting a reviewer used to shooting high-end bows would say its horrible while someone that is used to shooting low-end bows will say its really good. nusensei would need a vibration meter to accurately represent vibration

    • @mortenjacobsen5673

      not really, you set it up with some stabs sight and clinker and see what rattles . I shoot this riser with sf premium limbs 40 pound and something was always coming loose . for intermediate level you dont expect to get top end gear like fusion blades or carbon sight even had 3x flexi balls on it and still vibrations

    • @NUSensei
      @NUSensei  7 років тому

      The Winex is the lower end of W&W's line. It has the shape and functionality of the high-end W&W risers, but with a bit more weight to it. There are probably also differences in how well the design absorbs vibrations (which improves arrow speed), but that can be difficult to judge without a testing rig.

    Dear Sensei,
    Is this bow is a good bow for beginner?

      The Rolan bows are really good for archery clubs because they're cheap, look nice and can get passed around between different beginners without too much worry. They're OK for individuals to buy, if you're looking for a basic bow to start out. Otherwise, I'd invest in something a little more substantial.

    What a terrible sound when shooting! I think setting higher brace height would help a lot.

    This bow is a killer for the price.

    That bow needs some real tuning attention to get rid of the enormous vibrations before you can really give it a fair review. Its vibrating like a bag of spanners.

    Question: What is heavier. 1200 grams of carbon or 1200 grams of aluminium? Of course it is carbon, especially with all kinds of weights mounted on it ...

    I'm going to call you on this. Why the hell are you comparing a $300 riser to a $800 riser?

      Because people want to know what money gets them.

      To me, at $300 it is bottom end not middle! There are only a few that are truly in the middle range out there!
