As a Celtics fan, the C's knew they were never going to stop Luka. What they wanted to do was make him work for everything he got and Jaylen Brown did that. What was big about Brown taking Luka is that he was capable of defending Luka one-on-one. While Doncic had good games, he wasn't allowed to go nova, which would have required the double teams that opened up the Wolves defense in the previous round. JB being able to defend Luka and make him work meant that the Celtics could put their best on-ball defender on Kyrie. This was the heart of Boston's plan as they believed (correctly) that Kyrie could be taken out of a series by Jrue more easily than Luka. I am guessing that Boston's coaches decided that they could let Doncic get 30-35 points so long as Kyrie was under 20 or had bad efficiency and the rest of the Mavs roleplayers weren't allowed to get comfortable. This certainly is how their strategy appeared on the court and it worked.
To build on that, this is the major weakness for the Mavericks. Luka can score 35 points, which is a good night by any superstar's standards. However, if Kyrie is held for 20 or under, where does Dallas come up with the deficit? It's hard to see the rest of the Dallas roster combining for 50 points, especially if either Kyrie or Luka is inefficient. Dallas needed for everyone to hit threes and for Lively/Gafford to be hyper efficient (ie, feast on Luka's lobs). Boston knew this and took away the easy corners and lobs, forcing the rest of the Mavs to score those 50 points on tough, contested shots, which they just couldn't do. In one game? Sure. In four games out of seven? It's almost a mathematical impossibility. This is why the Mavs adding Klay was such a great move. You put in 30-35 from Luka, 20 on good efficiency from Kyrie and another 15 or so on good efficiency from Klay and suddenly the rest of the roster has a really good chance of making up the scoring deficits with relative ease. Of course the game is much more than a math equation, but statistically speaking this new-look Mavs team is much more dangerous than the one that made the Finals last year.

In the regular season the Celtics went 3-0 against Miami, 2-1 against Cleveland w/ a 1 point loss, 3-2 against Indiana. They were 41-11 against the Eastern conference...WHO in the east was beating a healthy (KP) Celtics team in a best of 7 w/ home court?! There are definitely other players who aren't intimidated by Luka, but few as talented and willing to put up consistent performances like Brown has been.
JB Most definatly is not intimidated by Luka, moreso I like Luka is intimidated by JB. The Mavs were not ever comfortable having JB guarding Luka and would set as many screens as it would take to force a switch, eating up much of the shot clock on a lot of posessions. You could see the frustration Luka was having with JB, far more than with anyone else. In game 5 JB told Mazulla that if Luka stays in, he is staying in. His mission was to harass and stifle Luka as much as possible and his defensive work on both Luka and Kyrie were huge in winning this title. The Mavs offense is why they lost only scoring 88,89,98 and 99 in their 4 losses. Jb, Jrue, White, Tatum and at times KP were excellent on defensive in their wins. So much so that the narrative switched from the Mavs having the greatest backcourt ever and the majority of analysts and polls picking the Mavs in 5 or 6 to the new narrative "Luka needs help"

The most compelling stat that demonstrates Jaylen's effectiveness at guarding Luka is the TEAM points scored per possession. Dallas managed just .85 points per possession during the Finals when Jaylen was guarding Luka. And that wasn't a fluke, as Dallas only managed .82 points per possession in the regular season when Jaylen was guarding Luka. No other matchup defender on Luka with the same sort of volume of possessions came close to that kind of number in either the regular season or in the playoffs.
Lukas problem is the game has two directions. He's a liability on defense and a big part of why they lost this series. Being a professional athlete includes taking care of your body and putting effort in tackling your weaknesses. JB is a great example for that. Working his ass off all summer. Losing some weight for a chip should be a no brainer - for a professional athlete. And the constant bitching and whining is pathetic.

If I'm Dallas I'm looking to get a high quality shooting guard and move Luka to the forward position so he doesn't have to work as hard on offense. There's plenty of talent at that position they just need to find one that plays good defense. Then let Gafford and Lively play on the floor together. That duo needs to play 65 combined minutes per game instead of 43. Then just find a good big to back them up. That all happens and they're a 62 win team next year and going 7 games in the finals instead of losing in 5.

Boston's squad was too deep for Luka to do anything about. Pritchard, White, Holiday and Tatum was also on him all game aside from JBrown. Mazulla put whoever's fresh to defend Dondo and also hunted him like a thropy-animal in every offensive possession. It was really sad to watch Luka having to carry the ball up, play through a double team and then face Tingus Pingus in the post 20 seconds later, then Brown, then Tatum, then Holiday, then Smith, then Pritchard pullinng up from the logo, then Tingus pulling up from the logo it was relentless. Nobody exploited this glaring weakness except Boston. While Luka's defense has improved, the Celtics showed why he still has to be hidden on defense as of this finals.
Luka had trouble with the Celtics elite defenders; Brown, Tatum, Holiday and White. In game 3 of the finals, when Luka was under that pressure, he lost focus with arguing with the refs. In game 3 it looked like Luka wanted to foul out with silly fouls (especially the 4th and 6th fouls). Luka has to be more mature under pressure to be an NBA champion.

As a Celtics fan, the C's knew they were never going to stop Luka. What they wanted to do was make him work for everything he got and Jaylen Brown did that. What was big about Brown taking Luka is that he was capable of defending Luka one-on-one. While Doncic had good games, he wasn't allowed to go nova, which would have required the double teams that opened up the Wolves defense in the previous round.
JB being able to defend Luka and make him work meant that the Celtics could put their best on-ball defender on Kyrie. This was the heart of Boston's plan as they believed (correctly) that Kyrie could be taken out of a series by Jrue more easily than Luka. I am guessing that Boston's coaches decided that they could let Doncic get 30-35 points so long as Kyrie was under 20 or had bad efficiency and the rest of the Mavs roleplayers weren't allowed to get comfortable. This certainly is how their strategy appeared on the court and it worked.
To build on that, this is the major weakness for the Mavericks. Luka can score 35 points, which is a good night by any superstar's standards. However, if Kyrie is held for 20 or under, where does Dallas come up with the deficit? It's hard to see the rest of the Dallas roster combining for 50 points, especially if either Kyrie or Luka is inefficient. Dallas needed for everyone to hit threes and for Lively/Gafford to be hyper efficient (ie, feast on Luka's lobs). Boston knew this and took away the easy corners and lobs, forcing the rest of the Mavs to score those 50 points on tough, contested shots, which they just couldn't do. In one game? Sure. In four games out of seven? It's almost a mathematical impossibility.
This is why the Mavs adding Klay was such a great move. You put in 30-35 from Luka, 20 on good efficiency from Kyrie and another 15 or so on good efficiency from Klay and suddenly the rest of the roster has a really good chance of making up the scoring deficits with relative ease. Of course the game is much more than a math equation, but statistically speaking this new-look Mavs team is much more dangerous than the one that made the Finals last year.

There are definitely other players who aren't intimidated by Luka, but few as talented and willing to put up consistent performances like Brown has been.
JB Most definatly is not intimidated by Luka, moreso I like Luka is intimidated by JB. The Mavs were not ever comfortable having JB guarding Luka and would set as many screens as it would take to force a switch, eating up much of the shot clock on a lot of posessions. You could see the frustration Luka was having with JB, far more than with anyone else. In game 5 JB told Mazulla that if Luka stays in, he is staying in. His mission was to harass and stifle Luka as much as possible and his defensive work on both Luka and Kyrie were huge in winning this title. The Mavs offense is why they lost only scoring 88,89,98 and 99 in their 4 losses. Jb, Jrue, White, Tatum and at times KP were excellent on defensive in their wins. So much so that the narrative switched from the Mavs having the greatest backcourt ever and the majority of analysts and polls picking the Mavs in 5 or 6 to the new narrative "Luka needs help"

The most compelling stat that demonstrates Jaylen's effectiveness at guarding Luka is the TEAM points scored per possession. Dallas managed just .85 points per possession during the Finals when Jaylen was guarding Luka. And that wasn't a fluke, as Dallas only managed .82 points per possession in the regular season when Jaylen was guarding Luka. No other matchup defender on Luka with the same sort of volume of possessions came close to that kind of number in either the regular season or in the playoffs.
Lukas problem is the game has two directions. He's a liability on defense and a big part of why they lost this series. Being a professional athlete includes taking care of your body and putting effort in tackling your weaknesses. JB is a great example for that. Working his ass off all summer. Losing some weight for a chip should be a no brainer - for a professional athlete. And the constant bitching and whining is pathetic.

If I'm Dallas I'm looking to get a high quality shooting guard and move Luka to the forward position so he doesn't have to work as hard on offense. There's plenty of talent at that position they just need to find one that plays good defense. Then let Gafford and Lively play on the floor together. That duo needs to play 65 combined minutes per game instead of 43. Then just find a good big to back them up. That all happens and they're a 62 win team next year and going 7 games in the finals instead of losing in 5.

Mazulla put whoever's fresh to defend Dondo and also hunted him like a thropy-animal in every offensive possession. luka wasn’t the best overall player in the postseason. his lack of effort on the defensive side of the court hurts when you play a team that doesn’t have a weak offensive player. Luka was a turnstile in 4 of 5 finals games. scoring 30 points but causing your team to give up 40 isn’t great

I disagree with your comment, "the best overall player on both teams." Luka is an offensive juggernaut, but defensively, he can be exploited. He's too slow and he can't slide his feet to keep up with faster, more athletic players. The Mavs hid him and assigned him to bigs during this playoff run. Nobody exploited this glaring weakness except Boston. While Luka's defense has improved, the Celtics showed why he still has to be hidden on defense as of this finals.

Luka had trouble with the Celtics elite defenders; Brown, Tatum, Holiday and White. In game 3 of the finals, when Luka was under that pressure, he lost focus with arguing with the refs. In game 3 it looked like Luka wanted to foul out with silly fouls (especially the 4th and 6th fouls).
Luka has to be more mature under pressure to be an NBA champion.
