  • Quick and dirty how to change out the low beam lamps of a 2nd generation ( 2009 - 2013 ) Mazda 6. You can do it with the tire on or the tire off depending on your dexterity and/or patience level. Both ways shown here.
    I hope it helped! Save some money. Good luck.

    I spent 20 minutes squatting in the Auto Zone parking lot trying to plug a low-beam bulb into the high-beam socket because I didn't watch this video first. (Pro tip: won't fit no matter HOW much you cuss at it.) Thanks to this video now at least I know what to look for -- uncertain exactly how to remove the bail, but once that's out of the way, looks pretty straightforward. Thanks!!!

    Great video. I was looking at the car and thinking, "Those idiots that designed this can't really expect us to pull out the wheel well insert to change a headlight bulb." Thanks for confirming that is, in fact, what the idiots wanted us to do. My only change was that I turned my wheels in (leaving the wheel on). I think it was easier. Took me about 20 min. and half of my Navy vocabulary.

      Quick lube guys are morons a good percentage of the time. I never trust them. I always open the hood after I get the car back from them just to check things out. I have found the oil cap laying on the valve cover not screwed back on, an air filter that was the wrong part and way too big crammed into the air box, and they almost always put too much air in the tires.

    Now I see why the dealer told me that there was nothing wrong with the aiming of my headlights. They couldn't be bothered and I can't see without the high beams on! Thank you for enlightening me.

      Lorrie, yes, poor headlight distance is another known issue with this model. I think Consumer Reports had the same comment. I had to adjust mine up regardless of what the factory spec was. If I recall correctly, you don't need deal with the wheel area, they can be adjusted from under the hood. Park the car 10 feet from a wall (the garage wall, the side of a mall, whatever), use a piece of tape and mark the height of the top or bottom edge of the the bright spot shining on the wall. Turn the adjustment screw until the bright spot is now 4 inches higher. Give it a try at night. I had my wife drive the other direction to make sure I did not make them too high as to blind the other drivers. If it is too high or to low, adjust accordingly. Also, a very bright lamp helps after trial and error I had the best results with Philips H7 CrystalVision Ultra Headlight Bulbs. Good luck. If I have the time I will take a picture of the vertical adjustment screws to try to help you out!

    Thanks for posting. Did this minutes ago. I did not take wheel off but had to use jack with wheel turned outward. Push-type retainers come off as video shows turning with a Phillips head applying no pressure causing middle to pop up then using flat head to pop off outside. If your memory sucks, take a picture of the bulb enclosure with the clip on before you take that retainer clip off, trust me lol. Who were the cosigners that gave thumbs up to the engineer that came up with this?

    There are four screws under the car which make removing the wheel cover much much easier. Its in the car manual. Overall this whole process was a hassel for me, I installed HID's to my car, I suggest just removing the wheel, remove the pop rivets(look up a video on how to remove pop rivets, i broke a few lol) along with the four screws which attached the cover to the fender after that everything is easy to see ( signal light, low beam and fog lights). Removing everything just makes the whole process go much faster instead of struggling to see where are the bulbs are.

    I changed my bulbs yesterday on my Mazda 6, yr 2009, it was a pain in the arse. some plastic pop rivets nearly didn't get out. what a shit. This rubber protection was also a pain to bend, thought sometimes it would break, haha. Took me about 1 hour for both sides. Thanks for the video, would never find out to change it this way

    Just a word of caution for folks out there attempting this. Be careful when attempting to go through the wheel well to change the bulb. The pop rivets are hard to find! So do not break them. Instead of replacing the bulb, I installed a LED light kit on both sides but I had to remove the front bumper to do it. Not a difficult job but it does take some time and realigning the parts was time consuming!

    If you are changing out bulbs faster than a rabbit on a date, there might be a different problem. The running light on my Mazda 6i stopped working. This is a 7444HD lamp, dual element also used for the turn signal and is housed in the front headlamp lens assembly. When I removed the bulb both elements tested OK. I traced the problem to a loose harness connector located under the air filter housing (need to take out the air filter housing to get to it). After locking the connector in, it's been working ever since. There is a tool you can use for the fender skirt fasteners so they don't get damaged when you try to remove them - about $9 at your favorite parts store.

    • @bretthowe3360
      @bretthowe3360 9 років тому +1

      Brett Howe Another tip - use gloves to handle the bulbs when installing them. Oil from your fingers make hot spots on the bulb that makes them fail faster.

    Both my low beams are not working. I saw the fuses are ok. they are of 10A. the high beam fuses are missing, they are rated 15A. I am really stressed now because the mazda dealer said that they are really expensive and if both the sides are not working then there could be some other electrical malfunction. Is there any relay for low beams that would be responsible for the both side low beams?

    I've got a '12 Mazda 6, almost 180k miles, bought it at 43k. Been a great car- reliable, fair MPG, enough juice to merge and pass when needed, big trunk; been able to fix most everything myself as a shade-tree mechanic. Overall, a positive experience.... but this abomination of a headlight replacement process is why I will never own another Mazda. You think the process sucks in this video? Make the change in an unheated garage in Minnesota in February. The plastic edges of the wheel-well panels turn to razors; the working space would be ample if my arms were the the size of an eight-year-old girl's, but as a grown adult... yeah, you can forget about gloves too. Maybe once I'm too old to get under the car myself I'd consider another Mazda, but until then...

    • @krgetler
      @krgetler  4 роки тому

      Man, I hear ya. I replaced them so many times and I fume each time. I even tried to replace it with an LED kit but the stupid way Mazda has the metal bale fold over the halogen bulb to hold it in you can't get an LED to fit. They did everything they could to make bulb changes unnecessarily difficult. I even considered cutting a round hole in the fender well and gluing a screw cap thingy on so I could just unscrew the cap and reach through. All that said, the car now has about 230k miles on it and it still looks and runs good.

I bought wider tires before moving to CO [wider works better in the snow with this car] but now it's almost impossible to change my headlight.

      I am sure you can get the official 'Mazda' ones from your dealer. Otherwise your local parts store should have plenty to choose from. • @nottjohn9418

      Garret, leave the center/phillips head portion extended out of the base of the plastic rivet assembly. Align the body and wheel-well holes and press the base of the rivet into place. Once the base of the rivet is into place (holding the wheel-well to the car body) push the center/phillips head portion into the plastic rivet base making it expand to lock the rivet assembly into place. Summary: set the base in place THEN push in the center.

    Changing the low beam in a 2012 Mazda 6 iSport is a pain in the ASS. The pop rivets didn't come out nearly as easy as yours did, and I ended up actually breaking a few to get them out. When I did get them out, prying back the mud guard just with one hand while changing it with the other also wasn't as easy. This is seriously the dumbest fucking way just to change out a damn headlight. Car designers definitely could come up with an easier way of doing this, but why? "Visit your local mazda dealership with help to change out the bulb". Fucking idiots.

    I'm getting tired of replacing those low beams,its bs that they keep going out. Ridiculous. I've never had to replace low beams twice a yr,or even once a year on any car I've owned except this Mazda 6 2012

      then it is most likely something wrong with the ballast

      Dawn Wells, If you are using Halogen blubs you cannot touch the bulbs with your bare hands. Use gloves. The oils from your skin will burn and blow out the filament.

      ...to make the big things easier. Engine bay room is excellent. I used to have gm, 80's and 90's and they were pretty narly to work on. I still don't mnow why gm would leave knifelike steel pertrusions everywhere.... i bet they are better now just haven't seen one apart in a while.

    Maybe we should hire mechanics to be car designers and engineers? Taking a tire off, risking injury to change a light bulb? Really?

    There is NO REASON to remove anything. You can just reach with your hand on both sides. You’re just making more work for yourself.

      Edit! Just realized it only works on the european model.... ua-cam.com/video/nFh9JufbEMM/v-deo.html
      Absolutly right. Just did it, took under 5 minuttes. Use a glowe if you don't want to scrabe your hand/arms. It's tight but perfectly straight forward. The front markers are more of a hazzle, very tight when you have to tighten them again.

    Do you think this is the same for a 2008? WTF???? What in the name of all that is holy were they thinking making it this complicated to change a light bulb? I am female and trying to learn to be handy.
    I will probably be dead within 5 minutes of trying this shit.

    Been there, done that, got the hat and tee shirt.. Horrible procedure, but it's easier then taking the bumper off. So crabby. Such a bad design. Boo Mazda BOOO! What is even worse is even with new bulbs the low beam visibility is extremely poor. Just a bad job of engineering. This vehicle is unsafe with the poor projection of the low beam halogen bulbs .

    Why does everything on this car have to be such a pain? I dont own one but have done several things on a friends car. I would NEVER recommend this car to anybody.
