Got a couple loads of oats/peas ground up today. Filled the self feeder for the goat kids and the bin I feed the heifers out of. Wind was still strong, got up to -3 in the afternoon, but felt like -20 to me. Froze my butt off.
Good evening Ed. It never made it to 0°f today tonight the low is supposed to be -19°f . When I went out around 7pm the cows were all in the barn so I shut the door, you know its cold when they stay in voluntarily, especially when they only have had access to the barn since Saturday evening.
They were about half in and half out this morning, once they figured out I was outside they all went out. They figured out that the bale in the barn was better then what was left of the one outside. I'm really wondering how much of a pain the tractor will be tomorrow, they will need hay and if it cooperates I'll feed silage too but ... I haven't had this one running when it's gotten that cold before. 🤷♂️
Cold and dry here in the -30s. We have the option of letting them lick snow if they don't get enough water. Some claim snow can get them through the whole winter without water but I'm not about to try it.
I'm sure lots of critters can survive off snow, but they've got to eat more to keep their bodies warm enough. They also say warm water is best. Thank you Roosty!
Morning Ed & Becky. Good to see that you're still keeping busy with the cows. Those clamps look to be a good idea for the water tanks, I look forward to hearing how they worked out for you guys.

"Hay" there neighbor, you were explaining your cattle feeding in cold weather and our outcomes seem to be almost the opposite of what you said. In cold weather we always fed the beat quality hay we had, no crapy hay, ever. Hay comsumption went up during the cold a bunch, not uncommon to be double or tripple what the animals would eat in warm or milder weather. In winter we always kept bedding dry or as dry as possible. There seemed to be a consistant difference in our cattle feed consumption patterns. I haven't watched your content consistantly, so I don't know what you feed for concentrates. We didn't feed anything but hay unless an animal was having health problems. When we had enough pasture cattle were on pasture, if not enough pasture, we supplimented with hay. If no pasture was available, we fed hay, that was it. Our feed program never had issues fattening on pasture and/or our best quality hay with our Simentals. I'm definitely not saying your are wrong, just have experienced very different feeding outcomes and we are only a mile appart. Quite interesting. Being we only fed hay, when there was no available pasture, it was easy to track hay consumption by bale count when we provided no suplements other than salt and mineral blocks. Would be interesting to talk to you on this subject at some point. If weather was moderate and we had bum hay to get rid of, we sprayed it with molasses to bait the critters into eating more quantity and with the two together, usually had descent outcomes. Us farmers never do things the same, that's for sure, so it is unlikely we would get the same outcomes. This entire discussion might be for naught. I might have misunderstood your feed comsumption explanation. Catch you later. Keep on farming, Nick
