Excellent video, it’s by far the most disturbing movie I’ve ever watched. What makes these horror movies scary is how they’re really and plausible. The rape and suicide scenes are horrendous.
YO prisons are the worst, even today. You have hundreds of adolescents with too much energy and anti-social behaviour problems all put together which leads to very predictable consequences.
Absolutely spot on when you say this is an accurate snapshot of the UK in the 1970's. I was born in 70 and I still remember the racist language that was used casually and often. Alan Clark was a brilliant director, have you seen his other films?

I remember watching this many years ago and it stuck in my mind for a long time afterwards, as you say, there are some truly horrendous scenes!
My uncle was in borstal from 1978 to 80. He said it was worse than the film in reality.
