He really likes the warmth too. It's the difference cuddling with someone before you fall asleep and not having someone to cuddle with. It’s nice that he’s trying to save a bird, but he’s saving the WRONG SPECIES of bird. Starlings are an invasive species in the United States. They kill native songbirds, including purple martins. Purple martins can no longer nest in the eastern United States because of starlings and other invasive species out-competing them for nesting sites. This guy needs to quit saving starlings. Kill them. Spend your time and money saving native species of birds.

Hi I have a question for you Mike. I have a momma sparrow living somewhere in our roof area. She keeps kicking the baby’s out or they’re just falling. But I have one that is still alive I’ve had him for almost 4 days. Eating and poops are good. He’s energetic and all but only leans on his right side. When he eats his little head is so bent. I’m not sure if maybe he was injured from the fall or sick possible. Which scares me- I don’t know if I could get sick from him. I can’t find any information on line about this. Please is you have any answers. I can’t morally stop caring for him at this point. 🥺

It's not right what he's doing. This is a grackle, not a starling, and raising and keeping it is completely illegal. He makes instructional videos without even knowing what bird species he's raising. And his feeding advice is pretty terrible too.

I did find a baby Grosbeak recently, whose parents had been killed in the city near a high-rise building. I could not seem to get this bird to eat or cooperate, he was not well and he did not last but a day. I did film some footage because he was such an unusual bird for this area, I had never heard of a grosbeak. Still trying to decide if I should edit this into something or not. Because he didn't make it.

We did this when we were kids in the mid 60's in central Massachusetts. One time we had three birds. Elm trees were removed due to disease and when the tall tree came down so did the nest of birds. My Mom, when she was feeding them and they would chirp, she would "beep" back at them. Before they could fly they would run along behind us in the backyard, fly a little run a little. They would take a bath in a puddle on the picnic table. As soon as they could fly we let them be outside all the time. We could walk out on the back stoop and hear them chirping and when we would "beep' back they would fly down to us and land on our finger. The neighbors were amazed! Everyone in the area knew who to bring lost birds to. We raised many birds this way. Even today at 72 years old I'm still feeding birds. Only now I'm in central Florida and they're semi wild hawks. Never captive, always free, but they will sometimes come if I call to them. One will fly down and grab food off a plate that I am holding in my hand. This level of trust took years to develop. The neighbors are amazed.

Very good lesson. I rescued two naked woodpecker nestlings still with closed eyes following a storm. Followed your examples with feeding but also gave them live mealworms. Got in some tree branches for them to peck and jump. They grew so fast in three weeks abled to fight each other and flew away like rockets. One thing I found out about woodpeckers, they have strong sharp peckers with wriggly tongues coming out like serpent. They also attacked their mealworms as if they were snakes. Beautiful experience raising them.

Brings back fond memories of tending to L'il Sub, the baby starling I adopted in 2004. Sub was a tiny bit older, I think, when I got him. He was used to being hand fed, so we bonded instantly. He was a real loudmouth about a week later. I loved it when he'd fall asleep in the palm of my hand. He followed me around like a dog with wings.

Bird Rescue Reminder: Whenever Possible, Put The Bird Back In The Nest. This is job one, because no one can raise the bird better than the parent bird. I never take a bird if there is a viable nest, or any way for the parent to feed it. Honestly, it is best to stay out of it, and let the adult birds do their normal work. Only intervene, when there is no nest, no parent, or if there is immediate urgent need to save the bird's life. Knowing when to help, and when NOT to help, is the hard decision we all make. Encouragement and gratitude to anyone who cares, and anyone who helps these beautiful creatures. Great vibes everyone, fly on! :-)

I couldn't agree with this more. I tried to save a baby bird I found on a canal path, its a LOT of work, and it will most likely die, mine did, and next time I find one I will put it in the trees nearby. The moral of the story is, your good intentions will only get you so far.
The statistics say that most birds that need intervention, do die within the first 24 hours. But if you can get them stabilized, fed, and sheltered, and they last a couple of days, it can actually be a positive outcome.
I wouldn't know the statistics, but I am agreeing with you that most people that don't have the time to dedicate to a baby bird should put it in the tree undergrowth. What you do is admirable, and a great deed, but most people that take on this task, no matter how good their intentions, most likely it will die... sometimes just through stress. Oh and one more point, birds don't like being looked down on, it scares them, they think you are a predator. ;)

You probably didn’t need to rescue it if it was a fledgling. Fledglings are supposed to be on the ground and their parents are watching and still feeding them. Although this is a different story if the bird is hurt or injured.

I found a baby Grackle yesterday while watering. Parents were freaking out. I couldn't see the nest but I also have very tall trees. At dusk I decided it was enough and brought him inside. I ran to the pet store and got grubs and super worms I can gut load. THANK you for the information. Going to apply to raise little Petrie here :)
Hi Mike. Chris and Sara Bellore from Staten Island N.Y. We just adopted a Starling yesterday evening. My wife brought him home from a strip mall where she found him on the ground along rhe wall. He must have fell out of a nest that is above the roll down gates of a pizzeria. Anyway, there he is; "Brooks," as we named him, after the character from the movie, "Shawshank Redemption." We are very grateful for your supportive video. Thanks for the pointers. He's sleeping now. He's a bit older than the one that was in the beginning of the video. Its amazing how fast they grow. My brother, sister and I used to find baby birds once and a while when we were kids and we were lucky enough that our neighbors could look after them till they were old enough to go back to the wild. That was 30 years ago and I spoke to them recently and they mentioned how much they miss doing it and that they looked forward to each summer because we usually found 1-2 birds a year.

Grateful for your video. I just found one today out in my garden walkway. It's tiny, eyes aren't even open yet. The starling nests i know of are in the eaves of the barn, not where I can safely get it into one. I've been running around crazy trying to find insects and I've given it some bits of the meat of some cherries. If it survives the night, I now have a game plan on other foods to give it. I could never keep up trying to catch bugs. Thank you for the info in this video🙏

I don’t think there was much he could of done as this guy looks fairly tall!
I’m sure the bird isn’t bothered that someone is looking down on it...as long as he’s being fed!
Unfortunately we are not all capable of leaning lower while talking or feeding an animal...
So loving and caring, etc. Everyone should be like you. This is a lesson, there r some people that can do hurt to others that's the time to leave them alone and do something good. Just care for the wildlife. Nature is so beutiful!!❤

This is just lovely! We rescued a tiny Sparrow fledgling yesterday who's about 2 weeks old. She can't fly just yet but we've been watching Mike's video
You probably didn’t need to rescue it if it was a fledgling. Fledglings are supposed to be on the ground and their parents are watching and still feeding them. Although this is a different story if the bird is hurt or injured.

I found a baby Grackle yesterday while watering. Parents were freaking out. I couldn't see the nest but I also have very tall trees. At dusk I decided it was enough and brought him inside. I ran to the pet store and got grubs and super worms I can gut load. THANK you for the information. Going to apply to raise little Petrie here :)

We just adopted a Starling yesterday evening. My wife brought him home from a strip mall where she found him on the ground along rhe wall. He must have fell out of a nest that is above the roll down gates of a pizzeria.
Anyway, there he is; "Brooks," as we named him, after the character from the movie, "Shawshank Redemption."

My brother, sister and I used to find baby birds once and a while when we were kids and we were lucky enough that our neighbors could look after them till they were old enough to go back to the wild. That was 30 years ago and I spoke to them recently and they mentioned how much they miss doing it and that they looked forward to each summer because we usually found 1-2 birds a year.

Grateful for your video. I just found one today out in my garden walkway. It's tiny, eyes aren't even open yet. The starling nests i know of are in the eaves of the barn, not where I can safely get it into one. I've been running around crazy trying to find insects and I've given it some bits of the meat of some cherries. If it survives the night, I now have a game plan on other foods to give it. I could never keep up trying to catch bugs. Thank you for the info in this video🙏
