    You mentioned Bard's Craft and I've been sitting here watching this video wondering where the oats box was.🤣 The "lesson" of his channel was a simple one: You don't need lots of expensive materials and plans and tools to make crafts that everyone at the table will love. Just paint, glue, and materials you probably already have … or can find very cheaply.

  • @vurrunna

    Nice to see a channel picking up the mantel where Bardic Crafts left off--you even cut your foam with a kitchen knife! The world can always use more videos helping new crafters get into the hobby, and encouraging folks to just put something together and not worry about measuring every last detail and getting it all perfect (I struggle with analysis paralysis whenever I craft, so remembering that I can just slap something together and it'll turn out fine is refreshing).
    Also, for folks that can't get their hands on foam (either because it's scarce in your region, or you'd rather not pick up spent building material), a similar effect for the stones can be made from dollar store foamboard with the paper peeled off (if you have the money), or even from cut up squares of egg carton.
    (Also-also, when gluing down sand and rubble onto the base, it's a good idea to focus your large bits of rock/rubble at the bases of the walls. This gives the impression that the collapsed portions of the wall have built up at the base, and gives the build a bit more depth.)

    Couple things I would have done: different widths of wood, some from splitting what you had along the grain, some from other popsicle sticks, twigs & branches etc. It looks like the goblins went to home depot and got a single type of dimensional lumber otherwise rather than scavenged from a variety of sources.
    Carving out or wire brushing some of the wood would've been free detail too.
    Washes don't work well on bare wood. Probably should have base coated those sticks first, even if the color you use is very close to their natural color, so the wash can do it's work properly later.
    Ivy could've had some thinner strands coming out of the main thick lines; dry brushed highlights of a brighter green simulate new growth well.
    A single larger piece of foam over the doorway would add detail and realism without the effort of carving a fitted arch and keystone.
    If you have a silicone mat you can lay out large sections of glue and brick Flat, then peel off and glue to a flat surface all at once. Not useful for corners and detail but saves time on big sections because it's less fiddly. Also helps make windows or other unsupported elements, they can dry without fighting gravity.

    I don't know if this will still fall under peasant crafting but perhaps instead of sand and paint, try some modpodge(or pva glue) and the cheapest tilegrout you van find, that wil give a nice structure for the inside and give it some rigidity aswell.

    You probably would have gotten a better interior look by having done the interior of the door with more bricks, even ones cut thinner.
    If you want to improve your washes, swap from the acrylic paints to acrylic inks, they tend to work a whole lot better for a consistent wash
    And to prevent some of the warping that cardboard often has, you ought to add a glue/paint mix layer over it, it tends to cancel the warping one way by going the other way.
    A relatively cheap option for dealing with corrugation is to grab a thing of the dollar store patching compound, it lasts forever with projects and has a LOT of uses with minis

    • @peasantlevelcrafting
      @peasantlevelcrafting  3 роки тому +4

      I absolutely agree, in hindsight I should have done the doorway. I had vague thoughts of using coffee stirrers to frame in the doorway but I completely forgot about it.
      Washes- I don’t own any inks..... yet.
      Patching compound is a good idea, I want to work with the paint/sand/glue mix a bit more, and if I can’t get it right I’ll go that route.
      Thanks for the advice!

    • @AzraelThanatos
      @AzraelThanatos 3 роки тому +2

      @@peasantlevelcrafting The inks are normally just a little bit more expensive than the craft paints, but they tend to last a whole lot longer because you end up using far less for things with it.

    If you want to make good Agrax DIY, getting proper painter's inks might work better. A bit pricier (but with what you get you are set for life), but having 1 tsp matte medium, 1 tsp water, 15 drops flow aid, 20 drops burnt umber ink, 10 drops black ink, and you got yourself a good substitute.

    • @peasantlevelcrafting
      @peasantlevelcrafting  2 роки тому +2

      The bottles were from the dollar store and I used about 1/20th of a bottle x3 colors so…
      About 15 cents?
      Similar ratio of use for PVA glue, also from dollar store…
      All told 20cents.
      “The ruined tower, a $1.20 terrain build for D&D…😂”
      I’ve seen these (type/size, not brand)paints go for as much as 2.50 American in bigger stores.
      Basically any, and I do mean any, acrylic paint will do the trick. Various brands trickle through discount chains, poke through the craft isle.
      The best of the cheaper acrylic paints in the USA, are, IMHO, FolkArt and AppleBarrel.
      I hope this helps!

    Noooooooooooo, I live near a castle, the gates on medieval and Roman style walls would have arching stone effects, (Egyptian/Greek, lord of the ring dwarfs would have lintels). There is nothing holding up the stones above the gate except magic and PVA glue. Look up arched masonry it will give your models a more realistic and interesting effect.
