    I was just watching a video of China's new Silk Road and this came to mind. as we have massive tunnelling machines which never stop 24/7 why not a massive concrete laying machine which takes in gravel, sand, water and cement at the front end by an endless convoy of dump trucks and constantly mixes and lays miles of concrete 24/7. no need for cement trucks any longer but it does it all. the idea came to me watching this old house where a "mini" machine did the mixing for the contractors and unlike that Dam project (somewhere in America) they never needed to worry about the cement getting too thick as it can be mixed to the right consistency at any time. ...just an idea!!

      ryelor123 They do have roads that will last 100 years. You really don't see them that often due to how expensive they are, but I do know for a fact that they are replacing section of US I80 with 100 year concrete.

    I bet with some wide tires and a good head of steam, he goes pretty far.. Recently saw in the news a guy in a Porsche didn't want to wait for the cars ahead of him in line, so he past them all and drove up to the wheel wells into fresh concrete. Now he knows why the thruway was all backed up. lol!

    I don't know what it is man. They have the gaps and depth set in those roads just perfect so of your driving anything with a 400+ the faster you go the worse you vibrate and if your driving a short wheel base, step side with a 460 in it you better be tightening up drive line bolts wen you get home. There's a road near me like that and the vibrations made all but 3 of the trans to motor bolts back out of his truck.

    • @ronaldwilkins6056
      @ronaldwilkins6056 3 роки тому

      Has to be about a 1.5" slump for the edges to hold...the paver has massive internal vibrators that consolidates the stiff mix.
      That outfit has got it goin on...very nice setup and production.

  • @FrankaDith
    @FrankaDith 12 років тому

    They made a few miles of it here in New Brunswick and it failed miserably ,but it was only half as thick.
    When we run out of oil i guess we,ll see more of these ,problem is with every ton of concrete we release a ton of CO2 ,don't think global warming is a concern when your paving miles of this stuff ,is it?

    What is the purpose of the metal frame/s at 0:54 ?

    • @killerdoxen
      @killerdoxen 8 років тому +1

      Reinforcing. It strengthens and holds the concrete in tension. Concrete has high compressive strength, but it's tensile strength is vey weak.

    • @jchambers2586
      @jchambers2586 8 років тому +1

      reinforcement make the concrete stronger.

    • @evgeny7039
      @evgeny7039 8 років тому +5

      It is not to reinforce the concrete slab. It is a dowelled joints between portions of pavement, which allow the concrete to move lengthwise (shrink or expand) but would not allow vertical movement. Those smooth bar joints are placed every 15m typically.

    • @2Truth4Liberty
      @2Truth4Liberty 7 років тому

      The REAL REASON is that there are two things about concrete - 1 - it lasts a long time - 2 it will crack - SO -- the concrete is lightly cut at various points so that the breaks will occur at the light cuts rather than randomly.
      The *metal frame work goes where they plan to lightly cut* so that when the concrete finally does break at those cuts, there will be strong bars still connecting the (then) two piece together so on piece cannot move up or down without the other piece.
      In this way, even with cracking, the road will remain "drivable (no sharp juts up or down)" for a long time.
      PS
      Short thick steel bars do not provide tensile strength. Long
      steel cables can provide tension strength - though, unfortunately, they
      have not really chosen to develop a method of installation for that.
      PPS
      Steel doweled joints do not allow the concrete to shrink or expand, it simply keeps them in alignment when the concrete cracks because of shrinking or expanding. The shrinking or expanding of concrete will cause it to break. The dowels are there to prevent usability AFTER it breaks - and it will break - hence scribing(lightly cutting) lines across the pavement at these doweled areas.

    • @evgeny7039
      @evgeny7039 7 років тому +1

      You have basically repeated what I said. The smooth bars WILL ALLOW THE CONCRETE TO SHRINK AND EXPAND BUT WILL NOT ALLOW VERTICAL MOVEMENT. That's what those are for. Nothing else. Pre-cutting concrete is an obvious technique to induce cracks in the regular pattern.
