- This is the step by step process that NFL and College Teams Use to prep footballs. Complete more passes because the ball never slips. QB's and Receivers love it.
Hey, everybody, welcome to elite athletes TV. I'm Mike Pawlawski, former 11 year pro quarterback and quarterbacks coach here at www.eliteathle... back when I played you were not allowed to touch footballs before they got on the field in either college or when I was playing in any of the pro leagues that I played in. They would come out of the bag, they'd wipe them down, and they'd throw them into practice and try to break them in that way and season the football. Nowadays they've changed that rule. You look at NFL quarterbacks, Tom Brady, Drew Brees their footballs are seasoned and rubbed and perfected to make them lightly tacky so that they feel really good in your hand supple and soft, so that that grip stays and they feel soft in receivers hands, and just a better overall football. They're more weatherproof and everything else. Young quarterbacks don't often get the opportunity to have that experience with the football. So sometimes your footballs get super dry in practice, sometimes they feel you know, worn and weathered. Other times, they just don't feel great in your hand. Today I'm going to show you how to prep a football so it feels like an NFL football in your hand.

Drill Brush, Leather Honey and Kiwi Leather Lotion can all by found by googling Their name and take your pick of outlets.
And so they may look great when you first get footballs but they don't feel good in the hand. As a quarterback, guys get particular about the footballs, they like. Our quarterback likes this Nike ball. And Big Game USA did a great job of customizing them and getting them out to me. They're not paying me for this. Jason Reed was the salesman who I dealt with and he did a fantastic job get these balls done, customized on time.
So we want to do is to get these game footballs ready. And you want to get that nice, soft, semi tacky feel that feels great both when you're throwing it as a quarterback and when you're catching it as a wide receiver. You want to take the edges off the laces so they don't feel so sharp, soften the seam so they don't feel so stiff. So when you put your finger in there, you get nice grip on the ball, keep good traction, but it doesn't feel hard doesn't roll off. And you don't lose that side grip and the quarterback end up throwing off that ring finger and middle finger. There's a whole process for this with football mud, leather lotion and brushing that I show you in the video If you look at NFL balls. Now, those balls look like they've been out doors for years at a time. And it's due to the process that used to break them in. So I'm going to show you today how to break in new footballs, how to get it ready for play, how to make it feel absolutely sweet for a quarterback.

1) Jason Reed is a legend! He helped with our custom team balls, and Big Game USA is amazing!
2) We're in the Phoenix area, and my son (also a quarterback - and quite the primadonna about his footballs) is wearing out a ball about every 3 months to where even the "wilson tack bar" won't bring it back, almost like the texture is worn off the ball. How does this relate to your experience? Will the Kiwi leather help with that?
3) How long should we expect a ball to last realistically before we need a new one?
4) Is there any way to restore a "worn out" ball to QB specs? or do we just continue to relegate it to the kicking squad?
In my experience the tack bar clogs up the leather and makes it wear out earlier because you can’t get the dirt off. If you treat it like the video it will last a long time.
I coach around 20-25 QB’s at a time over the years and I have balls that have gone for a couple years.
You can treat the ball then lotion it to bring the tack back. If it gets dirty just wipe it down with a damp towel to get it clean and lotion it up again after it dries.
In AZ the heat will make the ball dry out so ISE a little less of the mud for the first treatment and treat it more often with the lotion.
That’s my best advice for you.

Did u use the cleaner or the conditioner for the honey leather?
what can i do to get an extra 10 yds on my arch? is there anything that specific to help it cut through the air? im throwing roughly 45-55yds but id love to hit 65-70yds
I understand this is an old video but its a bit misinformed
You don't want to get the wax "off" the football, but rather brush it into the ball. After brushing it in it'll work in conjunction with conditioners and mud to provide tack and softness to the leather WITHOUT drying it out, which is what water/plain shaving cream will do to a ball. It isnt "packing stuff" or "preservative" but a tanned in tack that is infused into the leather to help with grip.
is it good to do this to already used balls

What would happend if u soaked the ball?
I followed all these steps but the ball doesn't have that tacky leather feel to it. I even applied another coat of Kiwi conditioner to it. It still feels a little damp. Any suggestions?

Are the customizable balls cowhide leather? I'm looking to buy a customizable ball but wanted to make sure it's the same material as the balls college teams use.

You don’t prep composite balls, they do not get any better than the way you buy them. Best thing would be to buy a genuine leather ball.
I haven’t used composite footballs so I’m not sure if you can even do a break in process with them.

@@NolanL10 This man is correct. Composite balls are at their best out of the box. They are superior to leather in one aspect: they are cheaper and do not waterlog. If you want to buy six balls to throw into a net when the grass is wet, composite is the way to go. Otherwise, stick to leather.

I bought a new leather football for my flag football team. Would you say that towel wipe down, leather honey, and brush does enough of a trick to get the ball tacky and soft or is it absolutely essential to do the mud? Thanks for your help! I've been researching this for days...
No. If I was only gonna do 1 I’d do the mud.
I noticed you don’t use that Tack Bar that Wilson has a kit for ball prep .you don’t think that’s necessary for extra grip or is it a gimmick?
It's a tack bar. it adds tack when you brush it in. It doest condition or soften the leather,
but you should be breaking it in by conditioning and mudding it before applying tack.
I only have the brush and tack bar and my ball has some parts on the seems that are very good and broken in and the rest isn’t how do I fix that

How do you maintain ? Just kiwi lotion every once a month ? Lotion ? Let it sit for a day then buff it out ?
Get a tack conditioner from a company that sells dedicated football conditioning products, apply that and let it sit for 30 mins before lightly brushing it into the leather

Nike vapor balls are crlp, small pointier nose doesnt dictate throwing tighter spirals. In my opinion buy a gst or a nfl game ball.

It’s just called leather honey. The lotion is Kiwi leather lotion. Those are the 2 that gave me the best results.

How to get rid of mojo slick feel to football? Had the mojo so used it and ball feel slick now
Wipe it down with a towel then use the kiwi leather lotion. You can also let it sit for a while and it will absorb or evaporate. I prefer the kiwi.
Can you do it to any leather football player in a store?
The lenna black Burne mud is 100 times better

You could go through the same process again with the mud. Just use a little less time since the leather is already broken down some.
When i used the damp towl to wipe packing stuff off , i lost alot of the pebbling on the ball. Is that normal? Its a brand new nike vapor elite, same exact ball you have in the video

You might try Big Game USA. I only prep balls for our team or my QB’s. Good luck.
“Mudding” after any prep conditioner totally defeats the purpose.
Holler when you’re ready to really know how to do this.
That's not true, mud works in conjunction with conditioners so as long as youre not drying the ball out beforehand (with water or shaving cream) mud is the best way to finish a football, theres a reason every NFL team in the league does it that way.

You can use a hand brush it just takes much more time and effort. Wilson and a few other companies make them

Question....will this work for Wilson GST as well? They say the mud you show can ruin the tiny nubs on the football.

@@EliteAthletesTV I just did the Leather Honey and wow...it was almost instantly soaked into the ball. Granted, I live in Houston, TX which is basically a sauna this time of year but still. That ball was soooo dry and slick! Its now curing in my truck.
