Diogenes was the first real example of a Cosmopolitan individual, no matter where he went he could make himself at home. He wasn’t bound by social norms and freed himself of the anxieties these social norms carry. He showed the world that one can be completely self-sufficient and find contentment and happiness in the simple things. People may have ridiculed him then but he has become an example on philosophical resistance over social control and false virtues. He was so grounded in his philosophical lifestyle that even ALEXANDER THE GREAT showed him respect. Not an easy thing to accomplish and he did it by just being true to himself. We can learn a lot from Diogenes, especially now with society becoming more self absorbed and morally corrupt than ever, a little of Diogenes’ self-sufficient resilience and philosophical wisdom could do all of us some good. No totalitarian government can control a society of philosophers, they are check against corruption and social injustice and carry the torch of creative ideas, critical thinking and moral virtue. There’s a statue of Diogenes in both Corinth and Sinope today, that should say something for the impact he had on Greek culture on even modern culture because we are still praising him today. He was “The Dude” of the ancient world.
I bet when people told him to piss off they didn't think he would take it quite literally. Commoner: "Why don't you piss off Diogenes!" Diogenes: "well don't mind if I do ;)"
Yes, but finding out who yourself is, is one of the toughest journeys you can be on. Following what is indoctrinated by society, and by all whom is are around you, is often believed as “being yourself”
@@Sjaeff "being" and "finding" are not the same. Being seems to denote a feeling of completeness or satisfaction, "finding" seems to denote a journey or mission.
We will constantly learn more and more about ourselves, but if, along the way, we can remain true to ourselves it will be very hard to lose touch with your true self and it will be hard to become lost in the physical world. Eg, find yourself sat at a desk, when really you want to be trekking through the amazon.
There's way more to the story of Diogenes than just a crazy man living on the street preaching at people. Did you know he used to be wealthy? His father was the head of the Monetary hierarchy and minted the money coins. But, the currency was debased and he was banished and exiled. The reason for his attitude and his disdain for social hangups, status symbols, and other problems with society was because of what happened to him. He was made into a slave, but the thing that saved him, and brought him back home by middle age was his mind, and his intellect. He lived at the top, the highest of highs, and crashed to the lowest of lows, and humility. So, when he finally got back to talk with his fellow Philosophers he could counter argue anything they thought, stated, arrested, or believed in out of spite. He had a kind of extreme reverse psychology, and on principle would follow through on all ideas just because he could. He had a very snarky sarcasm, and was very witty. As disgusting as he was, many people would hang out with him, including the youth. Regardless of how stinky, and filthy he was, his mind was brilliant. People still valued him for that despite and in spite of, his filthiness. The reason you couldn't convince him to be hygienic or polite was because he could counter argue any justification on any technicality. He knew not everyone they was behaving polite was actually being polite inside, and that they had different motives for doing so rather than to be good. He knew slavery existed, and that people treated them poorly. It's no wonder he was misanthropic and preferred dogs because dogs were always loving to him, whereas human beings had been so cruel. He was a more extreme version of Socrates whom also often lived out on the streets and was an iconoclast. Diogenes had a large group of followers that he preached to. The establishment tried to stop it which made it grow. Many religions later on all ripped off Diogenes, like John the Baptist. So obviously a rip-off. Today, Diogenes would be very much like a stand up comedian that speaks truth to power, or an avant garde artist that does "performance arts" as a form of protest, or to make a statement.
John the Baptist _may_ have ripped off Diogenes, or not. Your can never know this. All you have done is note down some similarities. This is not proof of a connection. Examples of convergent evolution should show why this is the case.
There is also another anecdotal incident regarding the most beautiful harlot of Corinth Lais, who was angry because Diogenes despised her beauty. So, to avenge him she offered him a night with her for free. But, after she put out the lantern, she switched places with her old and ugly maid. When the next day she tried to mock him publicly, for this prank she set on him, Diogenes replied: "After the lantern is put out every looks the same."
Alexander once asked Diogenes to ask for anything he want Diogenes asked him to get out of his sunshine. 🤷🏻♂️ This dude was complete Savage and a first hippie xD

yesterday I was reading about Diogenes. I was thinking a lot about his philosophy when the thought occurred to me "I wonder if Einzelgänger has a video on him." I checked today and saw this video had been posted just half an hour ago.
Interesting. That kind of thing happens to me with a ridiculous frequency. And I can't just chalk it up to synchronicity. Emerson said "what you think about expands." Maybe that's it...
@@jeremiahkennon4990 What if he masturbated in front of them cause he was horny? Would you hold that same energy if someone in the modern day masturbated in front of your kid?
I was wondering if I'd ever see a video on Diogenes from this channel. My absolute favorite philosopher the world over. He just seems like Philosophy's final form. The fact that his actions are both seen as admirable in some way, and yet make us all slightly uncomfortable is very telling about ourselves, I think.
@@Nickers19 wow, a lot has changed since I wrote that lol. But, I think our reaction to Diogenes can still teach us about ourselves. Hopefully I can explain what I mean clearly enough. Those of us who can't help but admire him in a way seem to understand on some level that material things alone do not make us happy. Meeting our needs on the bottom of Maslow's hierarchy would be enough, it seems. Diogenes also lived a life most would consider miserable or meaningless if they adopted that lifestyle for themselves - giving up on all ambition and just meeting your base needs. To me, it illustrates that we also intuitively understand that meaning and misery are relative concepts that really carry no objective weight. "Meaning" only has the weight you give it, and to Diogenes he obviously found meaning enough by following what he considered to be "nature" (ironically finding inspiration from dogs, which we domesticated from wolves in a way that wouldn't have happened "naturally"). Yet, we also find him a bit repulsive. If you ran into a modern Diogenes, you'd likely just think them a crazy homeless person. I think while we understand that subjective meaning can be found even if one completely disregards societal norms, not many of us are comfortable enough to simply stop giving a fuck entirely. If we could, how many of us would simply drop the charade we perform in order to try and gain clout or excessive wealth? We care what others think, and most of us can't really help it, I'd say. What if we, instead, focused on a life of Epicurian simplicity and (as a result) worked/stressed much less? Is there a "middle way" to be found here? Diogenes is an embodiment of the Zen proverb "Let go, or be dragged." The things we own (can) end up owning us. By paring his life down to the absolute minimum, he did not have much, this is true. But he also had nothing holding him back. He had nothing to lose.
There is a further account of his meeting with Alexander, though I'm unsure of the source. Alexander found Diogenes examining some relics on the ground. When Alexander asked what he was doing, Diogenes replied: "I am searching for the bones of your father, but I cannot distinguish them from those of a slave." Diogenes also supposedly said: "In a rich man's house the only place to spit is in his face."
Today he would be called homeless and mentally ill. He would also be walked over and ignored on the street because most do not pay attention to homeless.
From experience in NYC I say of a modern day Diogenes... And the cops would keep hassling him and chasing him from wherever he parked himself to rest. And we have to work to get an apartment because it's pain to live in the streets being hassled by the authorities. But a $3,000 apartment in NYC, $1,000 of that $3,000 the landlord charges every month goes to pay his property taxes. And the rent, you pay that with the money you have left after your income is taxed to death. And that apartment, it's a place where you shower to be clean for going to work. The system is one of slavery, except a slave has it better because he or she is at least taken care of and provided for. This new system of slavery is where the slave has to do everything, but the master can still whip with his laws. But within this system is a professional class of dog people. They are on welfare. They, unlike the slaves, have everything provided for them, never have to work, wind up on drugs and alcohol, commit crimes on the slaves for extra money for drugs and alcohol, and it's the repressive taxes the slaves pay that goes to support the professional dog people. Diogenes the dog, would despise the professional dog people.
I agree with the statement ``What spiritual seekers are seeking dogs already have.´´. Animals are living in heaven below the conceptual ``thinking´´ mind. Most humans are trapped inside of it and the next step in spiritual evolution would be to rise above it. We long for that happiness and this is why people for example drink alcohol. It sinks your awareness below thinking, giving you a little taste of that eternal peace.

“Let go of what you have to find out who you are” I couldn’t agree more. Material possessions can be nice, they make our life more comfortable but we shouldn’t let our material things define who we are.
I don't know honestly. I mean, everything you do purchase in some way owns you by having a desire to possess it. So, I don't know about you but for me it stands true that the less you have for being happy, the happier you become.
@@natureswhisper1397 It's a myth that materialism does not make you happy. Chris Camberis Easier said than done. To achieve this, not only you have to be comfortable with who are but also with the decisions you make regardless of what others think.
I don’t care anymore. I told my best friend that if he acts as if it’s okay that his colleagues dominate him then it’s okay for me to dominate him and his colleagues. He’s afraid of being fired for exposing corruption because him and most of the public are cowards even though the law is on their side in this matter, they just gotta make themselves useful somehow and I don’t care what happens to them if they allow others to commit crimes towards them because it feels more convenient to them than standing up for themselves. You need to feel contempt for what they do and realize if you don’t act nobody will so be the change you want to see. A lot led up to this like extreme child abuse in my past and the only one close to me who cared for me died and not even the social authorities would help me even though I called out for help. Dude, you missed the best part of the Alexander the Great anectode, where he responded "If I were not Diogenes, I would be anyone but Alexander the Great."
True. It was "featherless biped" I have no idea why the narrator was lazy on that. Cause to me this term was meant to be the most safest philosophical definition (debate-proof) of a human being for Plato.
When you consider what 'social norms', the need for possessions and easy convenience has done to the planet, there is also, it seems to me, a very pertinent ecological and sustainability example in Diogenes' outlook.
When Alexander asked Diogenes if he could do anything in his power for him, Diogenes replied with something like "undarken me" or "enlighten me". So it was a word play to say both "get out of my sunlight" and "share your wisdom with me". Alexander was shocked and left while saying "if i were not Alexander i wish i were Diogenes" at wich Diogenes replied "if i were not Diogenes, i would also want to be Diogenes". The ultimate madlad
Later on Alexander sent a messenger to summon Diogenes to his palace, Diogenes replied with "what prevents you from coming to me, also prevents me from coming to you". Alexander sent the messenger again asking what was preventing him to answer to his summon, to wich Diogenes replied "You are too powerful to need me, and I am too self-sufficient to need you". Then Alexander never bothered him again.
Diogenes certainly lived by his own rules, he met the most powerful ruler at the time and despised his presence, then Alexander continues to admire him wishing to be like him, can´t help but to think that Alexander was in a way hostage of the empire he himself build, Alexander achived the most glory a person can possibly have and still he wished things were different, wether the account is true or not, it´s food for thought about the things people consider important in life and what they chose to do to be happy, a humbling story indeed, thanks Einzelgänger.
You did a great job explaining Diogenes- I wish high school students had more teachers who could use 20 minutes this well. I subscribed- thank you. (By the way, those two newly-wed cynics were no doubt "consuming" for all to appreciate at one point, but I think you were referring to the other activity that was probably on their minds: consummating.)

I like the idea of living the hard life to become stronger and not being trapped by societies ideas on how things should be. Unfortunately it's more difficult to enact than you might think in the modern world. I've come to many of the same conclusions on my own without ever hearing about this man.
I watched this series that Ruby Wax made about herself alone on a tropical island. She made a friend out of some sea creature and spoke to it regularly. She denied herself any food from the mainland, so any substantial food she had to catch and kill it herself. She took shelter in some crude hut that she constructed but it hardly kept the tropical rain from drenching her to the bone, so she was miserable frequently. After several days on this island though she began to feel as if she had strangely liberated herself from the constraints of needing to put a face on to appear acceptible others. She almost resented the camera crew returning to the island to set themselves up in her base again. That is how I feel and I also feel that animals are easier to please than humans.
I am happy to have found someone else that acknowledges that modern cynicism and Classical Cynicism are different in its view of mankind and its nature.
Death of the American Dream... Hunter's point... I don't see the parallel.... On a small scale maybe... But this is the empire he could have never imagined... He would have never been known in this era...on prison or mental health facility.
Alexander's imprudent demeanor rendered him a subject of derision among numerous esteemed spiritual luminaries, including Diogenes, Dandamis, and the illustrious Chanakya. Notably, one must delve into the exchange between Alexander and Dandamis. Additionally, it is worth exploring the insights of the renowned "OSHO" regarding Alexander's vulgar folly.
I think Diogenes tried to make clear that we don't need materialistic things to be happy. Instead, he professed we just need to be able to satisfy our vital necessities like eating, drinking, and sleeping. As long as we are capable to do so, we don't need anything else. He rejected to have any kind of possession because he already knew that "money didn't buy happiness".

We will constantly learn more and more about ourselves, but if, along the way, we can remain true to ourselves it will be very hard to lose touch with your true self and it will be hard to become lost in the physical world. Eg, find yourself sat at a desk, when really you want to be trekking through the amazon.
Depends if free will even exists.
BlackUniGryphon Thanks for the expanded insight! ✨🙏🏻🌸🌸😊
This was so gooooood!
John the Baptist _may_ have ripped off Diogenes, or not. Your can never know this. All you have done is note down some similarities. This is not proof of a connection. Examples of convergent evolution should show why this is the case.
so if he were alive today in these times, he would say this current pandemic is a scam??
human nature I would like to think he would be able to see it for the plandemic it is
There is also another anecdotal incident regarding the most beautiful harlot of Corinth Lais, who was angry because Diogenes despised her beauty. So, to avenge him she offered him a night with her for free. But, after she put out the lantern, she switched places with her old and ugly maid. When the next day she tried to mock him publicly, for this prank she set on him, Diogenes replied: "After the lantern is put out every looks the same."
Diogenes might as well have invented Greek Fire cause not even Poseidon can cool off that BURN 🔥🔥🔥

´spot on
What do you think they tell?
When Alexander asked what he was doing, Diogenes replied: "I am searching for the bones of your father, but I cannot distinguish them from those of a slave."
Diogenes also supposedly said: "In a rich man's house the only place to spit is in his face."
" He'd piss in your fireplace, he'd drag you through turbulent indigo " (Joni Mitchell on Van Gogh)

Hi, doggie!
The man had no philosophy , he had life itself
And an abnormal fetish

You can march to any drummer. Just use a toilet and pleasure yourself behind closed doors.
Owning material things is ok as long as the material things don't own you.
If you had to work more than a day or two to get that material thing...it owns you whether you realize it or not
@@natureswhisper1397 It's a myth that materialism does not make you happy. Take games for instance, how much pleasure and joy have you had over the years enjoying some good games on your computer, Xbox or Playstation? How about living in a top apartment or house compared to a louse apartment? What would make you happier? What would raise your frequency the most? Money is not evil, it buys you the one thing humans appreciate the most... Freedom.
Thus, for the most part, the only thing I care about is money and power because it will make me stronger, more independent, and self-reliant. And there's nothing better than that.
@@True38 Video games are not "material" Especially not if you play with others! And even the best are rather temporary and short-lived. Self-reliance is a false hope. I thought he would want to be Diogenes if he weren't as well.
I thought it was “featherless biped,” not “featherless chicken”
@BLUE DOG ok
True. It was "featherless biped" I have no idea why the narrator was lazy on that. Cause to me this term was meant to be the most safest philosophical definition (debate-proof) of a human being for Plato.
@@THESPATHARIOS narrator owned up to the mistake in a previous comment but couldn't go back and correct it in video I guess.
Thank you for this Diogenes is fascinating to me
When people found out Alexander really liked him, they gave him more respect.
@jshowa o maybe a little bit but Alexander was not free like Diogenes Alex had a lot of responsibilities and in some manner knew his own fate.
@jshowa o He was born into and raised to be a King. Also Diogenes was a loner.
When you consider what 'social norms', the need for possessions and easy convenience has done to the planet, there is also, it seems to me, a very pertinent ecological and sustainability example in Diogenes' outlook.
True !
When Alexander asked Diogenes if he could do anything in his power for him,
Diogenes replied with something like "undarken me" or "enlighten me".
"Diogenes went into a furry convention and started observing people, saying:
I am looking for a human being."
