  • Motorcyclists have some distinct advantages and disadvantages on the road but there's no doubt that bikers understand things that car drivers can't get unless they have ever ridden. That's what we'll talk about today as I give you more things that only bikers will understand.

Our 18 year old two years ago came down with an illness. We have been told we’ll be his caretaker’s for the rest of our lives. Ever since then, the bike has been my only real escape. The stress and anxiety just melts away. There is no medication or meditation that matches the stress relief of riding. If anyone is reading this and has a lot of stress and or anxiety. I highly recommend learning to ride.

drove truck for 30 years, i would always think they should make cagers have to know how to drive a semi rig. riding a makes you a small object to pick up seeing. only plus is that a bike is a very maneuverable ride. unless you know what to do and when to it, it doesn't help much. I've been riding since the 70s. im 72 have never laid any of the bikes down or crashed. i owe it being a semi driver. 80,000 lbs takes a lot of concentration.

      Same here driver.
One nice thing about both trucking and riding is that it helps you with situational awareness in many extra aspects than your average driver.
Trucking helps you notice pretty much everything from a good vantage point and you focus more on road signage than the average person might.
Riding helps you keep your head on a swivel and be aware of, well also EVERYTHING around you haha.
But I always felt that being both a biker and a semi driver has very much helped me to be an all around more aware driver on the road.
And after years of trucking, you get to the point where you pretty much know what drivers around you are gonna do with fairly decent accuracy (never 100% though because people are crazy 😝)
All that combined has made me a safer driver. With only one drop on my first bike when I was about 18-19.
Never any vehicle accidents or other bike accidents (knock on wood)
But I’ve often felt the same as you, I wish all drivers had to take a CDL course or at least have it somewhere in the process of getting your license how trucks and motorcycles work and how to properly drive around those vehicles.
Some people are just absolutely lacking in the general understanding of how physics works in heavy vehicles, I have literally heard someone tell me once “Well you have way more wheels than my car so you should be able to stop a lot faster!”
      Scary stuff…
      Drive and ride safe! 👍

Great series, Hegshot. One more for the list. Was rear-ended with a passenger on 4 July '22 on A1A here in Florida. Totaled the bike (I rebuilt it; still have it) and both my passenger and myself were lucky that it didn't total us. Since then, I've developed a new habit (several, actually, but one in particular), which is that when I come to a stop at a light, I will cheat way off to one side of the lane or the other or, if there are cars stacked up in front of me, I'll sit right on the lane boundary (so as to have a straight shot between the cars in front of me). I've escaped two woulda-been rear-endings since that wreck. Seems like half or maybe a little less of people get what I'm doing. Most of the rest seem not to get it, but are happy to give me a wide berth. There is a small percentage - maybe 1 in 10 - who don't get it, and think "well he's not in the way so I'm gonna pull right up next to him". I'll admit my feathers get pretty ruffled when this happens, and my responses to that so far have probably been less polite than they could have been. But, even with that irritation, the additional safety is well worth it.

First issue you listed has a fix/hack. I put strong magnets on the bottom frame, near the front. The magnetic field ,at the traffic light ,makes the sensor think the motorcycle is a car. I’ve been using this for twenty plus years, and never had to run a red light. Give it a try. Cheap fix.

The key to being a good rider and a Not so good biker is being Patient.
I started riding motorcycles back in the early 1960's when they were no helmet laws.
The one big difference between yesteryear compared to today's time, is there's literally millions of drivers on the road than ever before.
I had a friend who told me about when he first started driving a car in the 1940's, he got pulled over by the Local Police for swerving while driving, the Cop figured he was drunk. It turned out he was changing Radio channels. The policemen said distracted driving is illegal.
3 years ago I was waiting for the Traffic lights to change for a left hand Turn when another driver was turning left off the main Highway on the Cellphone almost run me over.
One trick for getting the traffic lights to change while riding is buy a magnet and hang it underneath the engine, so it will help change the lights faster.
Been riding motorcycles for 63 years come June of 2024. Started when I was 6 years old. The first 30 years of riding motorcycles, (riding off road motorcycles) I learned how to crash and not get hurt, that didn't work out too good, lessen learned. The next 30+ years I've been learning how not to crash, I've had better resolute.
The Art of being a good cycle rider is simply, paying attention, and plenty of Patience.
Having some Comman sense goes along way to. Last but by far not the least Command Curiosity. When I was growing up, (not old enough to drive) when riding with my Dad down town and someone stopped in front of him, he'd stop to, the vehicle in front was doing a parallel parking maneuver, if you are Tailgating this is not going to go well, especially if another vehicle is behind you. Always keep a good distance while fallowing is the best thing to do. Even in in all vehicles of any kind.
Ride Safely Today and You'll be Riding another day Tomorrow.

Regarding traffic light sensors, they are not pressure sensors. Weight is irrelevant. They are effectively metal detectors which presents two problems for motorcycles. 1) not much metal to detect from underneath the bike. 2) the detection field may not be tall enough to pick up the bike. At a traffic light, you will often see a box cut into the road with a cut running through the center. Try to position your bike over that center cut. It may improve your chances of being detected.

I just got stuck yesterday at a light that would not change, on a rainy day. Been riding for 55 yrs. These traffic lights can be adjusted for motorcycles. In California, you can proceed thru a red light if the light will not change and you wait a reasonable time ,and yield to all traffic . Retracting your side stand on sensor wires [if your stand is steel] works sometimes .

I’ve had abs one two bikes so far, and so far. I’m not a fan. I gave it a fair shot. I had an 18 Honda Africa twin. A deer jumped out in front of me. That abs did nothing. The back tire locked up. Also, unrelated to abs. The tip sensor on that bike. During spirited riding in the canyons. The engine would sputter out if I leaned into a corner too low. The lesson I took from that bike is I don’t want any of these wizzbang “features “ my 04 Road King has a speedometer, and a gas gauge. That’s all I want, and or need.

I just dropped about 2k on suspension. I totally understand bike mods adding up. I’ve got two bikes, one with ABS and the other without. ABS on a bike is amazing. The trick is to be good enough not to need it. But it has saved my ass once. The worst is always having gloves on then needing your keys. I don’t ride as much as I used, being a disabled vet is rougher on some of us. But man do I love it. One of my favorites is the spring rides when you can smell the world around you coming back to life from a long winter. When it comes to charity, my favorite is hitting up a lemonade stand on the side of the ran by a couple kids. I usually give them whatever I have in my wallet. The guys I ride with usually do about the same. It really means the world to these kids. A Biker should be the last thing a kid should ever fear, but they don’t know how much a Biker will help them. You mention riding motorcycles makes a better driver, that’s why I want my daughter to ride. I don’t want her on the back seat unless she wants to be. I really like that HUD on the new bikes. I want in on my Vrod. 🍻

#1 - In MN it is legal for motorcycles to go through red left turn lights if these conditions are met
The motorcycle, bicycle or moped has come to a complete stop.
The traffic-control signal remains red for an unreasonable time.
The traffic-control signal is apparently malfunctioning or, if programmed to change to a green light only after detecting the approach of a motor vehicle, the signal has apparently failed to detect the motorcycle, bicycle or moped.
No vehicle or person is approaching the roadway to be crossed or entered.
Approaching vehicles or persons are so distant that they do not constitute an immediate hazard.

My ‘07 CVO doesn’t have ABS. I’ve managed to navigate several very close calls, when traffic came to a screeching halt.
ABS would be nice, but having the skill to stop your bike as quickly as possible at any speed is crucial!
I’ve considered upgrading to a newer bike, but this one is built and tuned to my riding style and needs. I simply don’t want to go through that again.

I think that when learning to drive, potential drivers should have to take an MSF course (in U.S) or CBT here in the UK.

A real driver isn't just driving their car. They watch everywhere and drive for everyone around them. We see motorcycles. I even give the salute when I pass motorcycles when I'm driving a car. That's the way I've driven for the last 30+ years.
People these days aren't taught to drive. They don't have to. There are so many things like abs, cruise control, detection systems that light up your side mirrors when something's there... Self driving cars! Technology has bred lazy drivers.

I think blipping the throttle is misunderstood. I always feel more confident if I blip the throttle a time or two before I pull out.. It;s not the sound.. It's just a real hate for stalling out the motor pulling out.

I've had so many times where I was at a red light and I signaled to the car behind me to pull up so it can trigger the sensor, rare when they listen so I stopped doing it for my own sanity.

Turning off your bike and restarting will often trip the sensor. The sensors are not weight related, they are circuits .

Once had the passenger jump off and hit the crosswalk button. But Washington has passed the three cycle rule, you wait through three cycles and then can safely proceed through the light on the fourth cycle. Tricky law though, If ticketed, you have to prove the sensor was broken to get the pass. Haven't been ticketed yet.

Lol, My buddy and I bought our bikes new at about the same time. We've both done upgrades but he's definitely done a lot more. I haven't kept track of the cost of mine, but he told me he's got roughly another 30k just in mods and upgrades!😂

I didn’t spend 30 or 40K USD on my bike. I bought a 1994 Evolution powered ElectraGlide Classic. I didn’t want all those bells and whistles like on the new CVO bikes.

On another note..., humans are hunter-gatherers so they are supposed to go outside once in awhile not spend all their time in boxes. I think thats why riding feels so good.
