- Frank Myron Henry (1934-2013) was inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright when he met him while a student at Phoenix Community College. Mr. Henry was on site several times with Mr. Wright during construction of the Harold C. Price / U-Haul House. Frank became the first Arizona graduate to receive a Bachelor of Architecture when he graduated from Arizona State University in 1960. His senior thesis was chosen by the American Institute of Architects (AIA) as the best in the nation. Frank's knowledge and focus later resulted in him being named Studio Master Emeritus at Taliesin West's Frank Lloyd Wright School of Architecture.
Mr. Henry generously toured groups through the U-Haul House for a decade. He concluded each tour of the house with a quote from Mr. Wright: "After 65 years, I finally put it together here."

The raked horizontal joints and flush vertical joints were done together to give the illusion off monolithic shapes which emphasizes the overall goal of large shapes interacting/contrasting with each other, not to create a horizontal feel.

It is interesting to compare Taliesen West with the Price home. I question if there is a group gathering spot at Taliesen West that works as well as the Price atrium ---- WOW it's a knock out. One of Wrights best designs. In defense of Wright, I think we have to admit Wright was under tons of pressure to create a large compound facility as quickly as possible, and money was never abundant for Wright. He lived pretty extravagantly, but no way did he have the resources that Price had. A swimming pool at Taliesen would have been incredibly useful, but Iam sure the money wasn't there. What a shame, Wright could have created something incredible. People probably depended on taking showers?? In my opinion, the Price house qualifies as a mansion, lived in only part of the year. For masonry by Wright, I find desert rubble stone to be unsurpassed in beauty..😊😊😊😊

Why is the Harold C Price House being referred to as the U Haul house?
You wonder how that red square tile got broken.
Someone tried to steal it.
Not one of FLW's best. The inner connecting court with floating roof is a nice idea but the detail of the pillars at the roof is disappointing. Roof fascia is not nice. The color schemes are not classic Wrightian complementary colors. The house doesn't have a conceptual theme. The masonry block work and concrete is very good however.
Cost I think was a factor.

Why is it called the uhual house?
I think the 2nd owners owned U-haul company. Shoen family.
All these frank lloyd wright houses ...they used to be lived in privately. These spaces were used and loved by people. These are wealthy people. And this form of construction methods is very expensive.

3/8ths of an inch is 9.5 or ~10mm. Just so the rest of the world knows.
I love FLW, but this house is so ugly on the inside! Concrete blocks on the inside are so cold and ugly...
