Fury against Sir Tony Blair remains

  • Tony Blair is to be knighted with the highest possible ranking in the new year honours list, Buckingham Palace has said. But a petition calling for Sir Tony to lose the knighthood has surpassed 1,000,000 signatures.
Set up on Saturday (January 1), it calls for the appointment - a Knight Companion of the Most Noble Order of the Garter - not to be given to the longest-serving Labour prime minister. Few minutes ago (Friday 7th January 2021, at GMT) the number of signatories surpassed 1 million and is rising at speed.
According to a new YouGov survey, just 14% approve of his knighthood - fewer than believe the moon landings were faked - and only 3% strongly so, while 63% disapprove, 41% strongly so.
How Blair went from a prime minister with a 93% approval rating in 1997 to one of Britain’s most loathed public figures - including among his own political tribe - offers invaluable lessons for Labour’s future.
During his tenure, he led the country into a bloody eight-year conflict in Iraq alongside US President George W Bush.
Blair’s former defence secretary, Geoff Hoon, this week claimed he was asked to burn a memo from the attorney general questioning the Iraq war’s legality; for many of us, former UN secretary general Kofi Annan’s conclusion that it was illegal was already sufficient.
The official Chilcot report on the Iraq War delivered a devastating verdict in 2016 about the handling and presentation of intelligence and the justification for military action.

A summary of the Chilcot report:
There was “no imminent threat from Saddam Hussein” in March 2003 and military action was “not a last resort”
The UK “chose to join the invasion of Iraq before the peaceful options for disarmament had been exhausted”
Tony Blair’s note to George Bush on July 28, 2002, saying UK would be with the US “whatever”, was the moment Britain was set on a path to war
Judgements about the threat posed by Iraq’s WMD “were presented with a certainty that was not justified”.
Tony Blair told attorney general Lord Goldsmith Iraq had committed breaches of UN Security Council resolution 1441 without giving evidence to back up his claim.
Ministry of Defence was “slow” to react to clear need for better equipment and it was not clear whose job it was to do so.
Planning for post-war Iraq was “wholly inadequate”
Blair government “failed to achieve its stated objectives”
The legality of the war can only be decided by an international court.
I try not to go around in life loathing people but for Blair I will make an exception.
