I had the chance to sit in the new CLE at the Munich auto show last weekend. I couldn't believe what I saw and more importantly noticed with my fingertips. I owned the c class coupe and e class coupe from the previous generation. This appears worse in every way than both by combing the worst of both previous models. It has the interior of the C class and the weight of the e class. What were they thinking?
So true. Mercedes has completely lost my interest. I have a facelift W212 E Class and there is honestly not a single new Mercedes I would replace it with. The new Mercs are bad in every aspect. Interior build and material quality is poor. And the interior design is a step down from the W213 E Class.
This video made up my mind. I’m buying the convertible when it gets released. This is my favorite Benz they made in a really long time and it’s affordable. Can’t wait for it to come out. Thanks for the upload.
Although I like this new one old E class coupe had much much better looking shape from profile, especially the part after B pillar, it screamed heritage. This one screams "C class made to be under E class". Still, good engeenering and looks good imo.
Thomas, your review of the CLE has been the best I've seen so far! Excellent! It may be possible that the AMG version may have adaptive suspension with rear steering for the US market.
Thomas reviews are always top notch, he's itself the definition of top quality research and entertainment in his field. He's the only journalist who brings my attention to newer cars which are so bland and similar to predecessors and other models in the line up.
I don't like this car, it's just a C class completely, but trying to pretend to be E class. I am so glad that I can have an E coupe before it discontinues.
fantastic job Thomas. Very informative and charming review! As a C238 owner, I am kind of disappointed in the CLE, especially with the interior. I really wished they would have waived the B pillar for this one, but maybe it's time to finally get a convertible. I'll stick with my C238 as long as I can, still nothing coming even close to its beauty and comfort .
Thanks Thomas for talking us through this fine car! And thanks a lot for demonstrating that this totally non downsized creamy six cylinder engine can very well be pretty economical. Which directly makes the new AMG 63 four cylinder engines appear as a load of H.S. Or B.S. as you will......😂
I found a article saying the reason so many german car makers make fake exhaust pipes is customers were complaining about seeing them in the rearview cameras and the smog dirt stuff it would leave on the car that they were sick of cleaning. I do see lots of older german cars with real exhaust tips seem to always be filthy.
That's not an argument for fake exhausts, that's an argument for no exhaust pipes at all. Just do that rather than putting in useless chrome pieces that are to mimic an exhaust from a far but that just look retarded up close.
Car seems more C class but at E class pricing, like the old CLK. I think the sum of sales volume of the previous C class coupe and E class coupe will be greater than this one size fits both. Buy a 440 or A5
In Paris speed limit has been decreased to 30 km per hour. Cars will be beeping constantly there! Concerning this model, I preferred my old Clk. The design of the rear without fake exhausts was better. And the older models had a real 5.0 V8 which made a distinctive rumble.
7:38 As far as I know you cannot get white seats as artico in the CLE, the white option is real leather only. Which is confusing because in the C Class you can order "Nevagrey" as artico which is more like white, but this isn't available in the CLE.
The looks/design of this new CLE coupe is close to the C class coupe which does not compare to the E class . The current 2023 and no longer available E coupe is a unique looker, with a flowing and beautiful design. But I understand, coupes do not sell in significant numbers and for the sake of economics, "the machine demands a sacrifice". Cheers Thomas, your reviews are wonderful, many thanks, David.
Thanks Thomas! I have the 2019 C43, and tested the new C43, which was underwhelming for the asking price. I will definitely checkout this new CLE when it arrives in Canadian showrooms, though not particularly excited about the synthetic exhaust note pumped through the speakers, and the fake exhaust tips at the rear are disappointing. I'm assuming CLE 53 will fix this :)
Thank you for finally convincing me to buy a benz. I need angrybird in my car 😂. Car looks pretty good. But I have to agree the black plastic stripe on the rear looks bad. This video made me remember again when they announced the car someone said. The new cle the c Class for the price of the e class.
I'm an E450 coupe owner. E class owners wanted more luxuries to come standard in our car. For the price we paid we should have damn near all amenities in our vehicle + longer trial periods with Mercedes services. If we wanted performance we could've gone E53. The CLE is a disappointment because it's essentially a C class coupe. Comes with B pillar and that ugly C class dashboard. I'm holding out hope that the amg variant will have no b pillar, and COLORFUL interiors. COLORFUL interiors (saddle brown) are the only reason I chose e450 over e53.
Best channel of its kind I know about; thank you for your efforts, always. Oh, yeah, the actual car: well, what can I say? I can't even look at this thing without my eyes bleeding, especially its interior. My 2p
This looks very much like a C Class interior. And being a modern Mercedes, it's probably the cheap hard plastic they use in the new C, the GLC and the GLE.
Funny how the 3 big German manufacturers differ when it comes to design detailing. Mercedes exterior and interior look good from distance - eye Candy, but at closer examination look and feel cheaper. Audi could seem safe and boring from a distance, but the details are appreciated more and more, the closer you get. BMW sits in between.
It's interesting, the CLE is longer than the E class Coupé but interior space is much smaller, especially in the rear. In comparison the wheelbase is a bit shorter but just about 8 mm, which shouldn't effect the interior space. However legroom has shrunken by 4,3 cm in the rear which makes you think where all the extra cm went to. Maybe in the frontal overhang, which is now 4 cm longer than in the E class Coupé.
All the extra length went into design. Its really just the little bit extra overhang in the front and the rear that sticks out more because of the "yacht design" as thomas points out earlier in the video.
I currently drive a current gen E400 coupe and have spent time in the 206 c-class. The new C/CLE interior is unacceptable garbage. Putting aside for a second the ubiquitous corporate components like the piano black surrounding the seat controls and the capacitive buttons (both of which are inexcusable trash), this interior is not even befitting of a Honda from 15 years ago. The hard plastics on the bottom of the dashboard, doors, and the center consoles shouldn't be in any Mercedes, never mind a higher end one. I will say that the MBUX software is excellent, and the matte faux leather at the very top of the door panels does feel great. The CLE, hypothetically for E-coupe customers as well, should have received slightly upgraded materials and an option to delete the piano black center console (c.f., designo interiors of old). Anyway, its a downright shame that they didn't improve the luxury of the C-class this generation. When the 204 and 205 C-classes came out, the A/CLA was not really a viable option because it was so bad. Since those cars have decent interiors for the price, the 206 C-class should have moved upmarket. I see no reason to go for the C over the CLA in the current iteration except for space. The interior quality is the same notwithstanding the price disparity and access to features. Further, the CLA is lighter, gets better mileage, and doesn't have that awful brake pedal calibration. I understand last-gen Mercedes had quality issues (squeaks and creaks) - some of the lower quality in this gen could have been forgiven if they put together better. However, these things are just as bad, if not worse. Overall, I prefer the design language of the prior gen MB, citing the w222 S class, w213 E class, and GT4-door as some of the pretties interiors ever. I would not feel so strongly about the new design language all their models if they got rid of the capacitive touch and piano black. I have heard they might be solving this in the facelifts of each of these. For now, if I needed a new car, I would simply buy an 8-series or last gen MB. I am completely writing off the CLE as it is not a replacement for the E-coupe, but a long C-coupe with more access to features.
I like that you started showing off blinker designs, could you please start showing off also reverse light? In newer cars it's often in some weird position, and I genuinely had no idea where my car will have one until I drove it myself, because not a single reviewer ever showed it. But I think it is important for safety to know at which point others can see it ie. when backing out of parking. Thanks!
@@autogefuehlJust added it into the original comment while you were writing - I think it is important for safety, to know when others can see that you have reverse up when you are for example backing up from parking space without good view. Especially in narrower city streets sometimes others have to pass really close to the parked cars and if they can see that you are going to reverse out, they give you space to do it safely. Some cars have it in the main rear lights where that is very easily for drivers passing by, some cars now have it in the middle of the bumper at the very bottom of the car which is much harder to spot. And with everybody using colored leds with transparent covers, it is difficult to say on stationary photos which light slots are for braking, blinkers, reversing light, foglight... GR Yaris for example, but many other cars as well.
They done this in between Class when they introduced the CLK years ago. Same situation where it was a C Class more than an E Class… personnalité, I would have cut the C Class coupé and Cabriolet and keep the E Class Coupé and Cabriolet…
Quite a downgrade in style vs the E coupe. As others have said- its still just a NON pillarless C coupe with a CLA front end grafted on! Mercedes are on a roll with the new model fails.
I personally like the design of the rear turning indicator. Has something of old times and is very well visible. The rest of the car is beautiful as well and for me it would definitely be the Coupé. I would directly go with the 6-cylinder considering that Mercs‘ 4-cylinders are not that refined and economical. Great work, keep it up! =)
I had a CLK 430 Cabrio years ago and this isn't really a blend like that car was. This car should have had a unique interior that truly blends the C and E with the mega screen being an option. It should have been as roomy as the outgoing E inside and it should have been better looking from the rear. This is a weak effort and it won't change the trajectory of coupe sales at Mercedes-Benz. It's just not enough. This should have been a really special car that makes people want a Mercedes coupe. I4, I6 and V8s should have been on offer. Oh well, the E-Class sedan is far more impressive. As a new C coupe this would have been a hit.
I urge people to listen to your podcast. The car industry has HUGE powers and tried to force you to abandon your principles for animal free leather with threats, bribes and downright lies stating that animal skins were not wasteful and therefore "sustainable and green". Your legendary principles have transformed the car industry for the better with cruelty free materials being the No.1 default choice for customers and is something Thomas you can be extremely proud of. Utmost respect to you !
I'd wish the interior would be non-digital-touchy cheap and boring, would like to operate through fine knobs and well weighted buttons. Also whats with these piano black inlays still? Open pore satin wooden inlays or brushed aluminium are so much more classy
I like the profile. The rear is great looking but agree the indicators would look better in a linear configuration. Shame about the comfort, but the seats may bed in after a few hundred miles. Great to see a new petrol engined car!
Your intro summarizes the problem with that model. The lack of any storytelling aside (CLE? what is it, a C or an E) where is this car positionned? It tries to target many segments with one car, obviously due to costs reason. The same happened with the AMG GT, it is not a performance car anymore but a 2+2 SL with a roof. This lack of clarity takes appeal and character away, it looks like a potpourri of all the cars Mercedes offers and we are not even talking about the blandness of the engine, dynamics and UI.
Living in the U.S. I’ve seen many more (‘23 and earlier) C class convertibles than E class. An obvious response would be that the C is more affordable. But I would submit that it has more to do with the C’s more manageable and sporty size. The CLE cab at 191 inches is no longer comparable to the Audi A5, or the BMW 4 Series which I think will turn off typical C class buyers. It sure did for me as I was leaning toward the new CLE convertible..not anymore. This new cabriolet is 6.5 inches longer! (191” vs 184.5”) And, c’mon MB it’s a 2024 model and STILL there’s piano black on the scratch and fingerprint magnet on the center console?
Thomas, regarding seat comfort. Living near a BMW plant, I have been fortunate enough to visit the Lear plant manufacturing seats for the BMW X vehicles (and Volvo now too). So, do the vehicle manufacturers provide the design/ergonomic specifications for the seat manufacturers (Lear, Magna, others) to construct the seats? Seems like the seat manufacturers/engineers could provide the vehicle manufacturers with options for more comfortable seats. Perhaps you could shoot a video tour of a seat manufacturing plant?
Regarding the stiffer seats: owning the GLA and other german vehicles in past with stiffer seats, they do tend to get softer with time. First months though, indeed they can feel uncomfortable.
Hi Thomas. You mentioned "tachometer" but you meant "speedometer". You did this the other day as well. Tachometer shows the engine revs, speedometer shows the road speed (unless its a German thing in which case I stand corrected). Overall a good video of course. ❤
Thomas, again same question as I asked at RS3 test material :-) Would you say this can be more pragmatic choice vs 911 base Carrera ? As fun and more practical vehicle, simply good combination vs 911 ? Pls let me know asap :-)
It was based on C Class underpinnings but the interiors and finishes were on par with the E Class, hence the higher pricing. I cannot agree it was basically a C Class as I have owned a C Class W203 and I still have my CLK A209 . The CLK was not a C Class other than being based on one. That is a fact and CLK owners past and present will tell you the same. A class of its own.
Another great review from the Motoring Mastermind! Personally I like the inside of the Genesis more. It seems automakers are now streamlining combustion engine ranges given their commitment to electrification.
When will the 6 cylinder diesel come to the new E Class? Will you be able to test it Thomas? I am sad the CLE has an interior from a C Class instead of an E Class. Also, the frames should've been pillarless. This doesn't feel like an E and C combination. More just like a new C Class coupe. That's it.
I really wonder what is going on at Mercedes. They seem to be making a lot of bad choices lately fuelled simply by cost cutting and higher profits. I've owned several Mercedes in the past and I honestly feel like my facelift W212 E350 Bluetec will be my last Mercedes. There's not a single new Mercedes that I would want to replace it. I've test driven all of them. And I was left disappointed after every single one. All their new models have really poor interior material and build quality. They used to feel rock solid and built to last forever. And to me, the new E Class interior design is a step down from the W213 interior design. Here, there's nothing E about the CLE. So disappointed in this brand.
Yeah that's what I was thinking as well, "that looks like a turn signal found on a mid-tier car 15 to 20 years ago". Very strange decision to design it like that, looks very retro and not in a good way, but rather in a cheap way
Thanks for the great review. But I don't like the design. The CLA-looking headlights are kinda dated now and also the side profil looks more like a facelift of the C-klasse Coupe and still looks a bit weird and bulky. The proportions of the E-klasse coupe are more stylish. And it gets a bit boring that every front and rear bumper at mercedes are kinda the same.

Interior build and material quality is poor. And the interior design is a step down from the W213 E Class.
I 100% agree with you, as I currently own a '22 AMG C43 (coupe). Mercedes missed the mark for sure, sadly.
This video made up my mind. I’m buying the convertible when it gets released. This is my favorite Benz they made in a really long time and it’s affordable. Can’t wait for it to come out. Thanks for the upload.
I still prefer the old e class coupe
Of course since it was way better.
Yeah I agree, I can't imagine this is what E-class customers want
Although I like this new one old E class coupe had much much better looking shape from profile, especially the part after B pillar, it screamed heritage. This one screams "C class made to be under E class". Still, good engeenering and looks good imo.
I totally agree!!
Likewise!
Spectacular auto journalism as always.
🙏🙏
Thomas, your review of the CLE has been the best I've seen so far! Excellent! It may be possible that the AMG version may have adaptive suspension with rear steering for the US market.
Thanks 🙏 yes that might be possible
Thomas reviews are always top notch, he's itself the definition of top quality research and entertainment in his field. He's the only journalist who brings my attention to newer cars which are so bland and similar to predecessors and other models in the line up.
Highly appreciated ✌️ please recommend 😎
I don't like this car, it's just a C class completely, but trying to pretend to be E class. I am so glad that I can have an E coupe before it discontinues.
😍 6 Zylinder! Beautiful car and great content as allways. You are the best thomas!
Thanks 🙏
👌🏻
fantastic job Thomas. Very informative and charming review! As a C238 owner, I am kind of disappointed in the CLE, especially with the interior. I really wished they would have waived the B pillar for this one, but maybe it's time to finally get a convertible. I'll stick with my C238 as long as I can, still nothing coming even close to its beauty and comfort .
... and made the interior like the all-new E-Class
First 😂
Nice review, nice car
And glad that there is a 6 cylinder option
The quality in this video ❤ I'm obsessed. Thanks Thomas Blue 😅 for another great review...
enjoy =)
La ligne du coupé est tout simplement magnifique. Bravo Mercedes.
8:39 I drive a C-Class with the nappa leather seats. By far the most comfortable seat I’ve sit in, even for long trips.
We all love Thomas!
✌️
Excellent review. Again!
cheers m8 !
New unit unlocked : Autogefühl fake exhaust sound police.
🚨🚨🚨🚨🚨
The colour combination of the convertible is insane🤯
Thanks Thomas! I have the 2019 C43, and tested the new C43, which was underwhelming for the asking price. I will definitely checkout this new CLE when it arrives in Canadian showrooms, though not particularly excited about the synthetic exhaust note pumped through the speakers, and the fake exhaust tips at the rear are disappointing. I'm assuming CLE 53 will fix this :)
Will cost as much, or even more than the C63
Thank you for finally convincing me to buy a benz. I need angrybird in my car 😂. Car looks pretty good. But I have to agree the black plastic stripe on the rear looks bad. This video made me remember again when they announced the car someone said. The new cle the c Class for the price of the e class.
thomas you are so funny i love your reviews
thanks so much! Please recommend :)
Also bring drive review of Cabriolet with roof down & tell us all about Engine sound , wind curtain ❤
My 2p
Thanks please recommend us!
Thomas, I love your reviews. Please let us know also the materials of the lower part of the doors. You keep missing this.
We often talk about that but we ll watch out more!
26:40 Bit off topic, but where was this filmed? Looks nice
San Sebastian area
It´s San Sebastián, in front of the KURSAAL Congress Centre and the beach of Gros. The driving along the coast (Getaria, Zumaia, …) it´s really nice.
Looks good! Hope it's beautiful design will live into the electric era!
If Santa is reading these comments I've been good this year and a 4 cylinder petrol Cabrio in Thomas blue would be a nice reward 👌
You have to keep in mind that at the trunk a HV battery for a plug-in hybrid has to be implemented..so i guess cost leg space at the rear
Thanks for the interesting feedback!
I drove the CLE450. It’s more nimble than the E, not surprisingly. Interior room isn’t quite as good. Great car overall.
Amazing looking car! Mercedes delivers again! Thanks for the review!🎉🎉🎉
Thanks for following!
Thanks!
Hm why would that be relevant and in which way?
Interesting
They done this in between Class when they introduced the CLK years ago. Same situation where it was a C Class more than an E Class… personnalité, I would have cut the C Class coupé and Cabriolet and keep the E Class Coupé and Cabriolet…
The CLK was at least a very high quality vehicle even though it was more C than E. We can't say the same for the CLE.
the CLK also inherited E-Class design, this is more C-Class
The CLK A209 interiors were very much on par with a comparable E Class at the time.
The same definitely cannot be said here.
Quite a downgrade in style vs the E coupe. As others have said- its still just a NON pillarless C coupe with a CLA front end grafted on! Mercedes are on a roll with the new model fails.
it's got a heavy, luxurious, Bentley like stance and look. I like it.
a cle200 costs in Greece the same as an A35. I'd probably go any day for the A35 than the CLE200
I have a 2023 RS5 Vorsprung Coupe...dynamic indicators should be standard on this level of car. Merc should've gone down the same route.
Love this channel. But can I suggest, any chance you guys could demonstrate what life is like if you install a bulky child car seat
Thanks my friend !
I'd wish the interior would be non-digital-touchy cheap and boring, would like to operate through fine knobs and well weighted buttons. Also whats with these piano black inlays still? Open pore satin wooden inlays or brushed aluminium are so much more classy
07:59 the rear-seat air vent looks like it is screaming out, "Why me? This cars makes no sense. Why me?!?" Thanks guys
Wait so the moonroof doesn’t go back ?
I like the profile. The rear is great looking but agree the indicators would look better in a linear configuration. Shame about the comfort, but the seats may bed in after a few hundred miles. Great to see a new petrol engined car!
But, I just saw that on german konfigurator you can get Sport exhaust U21 with CLE450?
Your intro summarizes the problem with that model. The lack of any storytelling aside (CLE? what is it, a C or an E) where is this car positionned? It tries to target many segments with one car, obviously due to costs reason. The same happened with the AMG GT, it is not a performance car anymore but a 2+2 SL with a roof. This lack of clarity takes appeal and character away, it looks like a potpourri of all the cars Mercedes offers and we are not even talking about the blandness of the engine, dynamics and UI.
3 l V6, I'm sold!
So no cle 43amg? Or will they also add that later on? Then the big boy 63 amg
Great video and comment... have a nice day
Living in the U.S.
Much prefer the current E class coupe and convertible. Much cleaner design and a bit larger.
Cle 300 vs c300? Is there a huge difference between them?
Thomas, regarding seat comfort. Living near a BMW plant, I have been fortunate enough to visit the Lear plant manufacturing seats for the BMW X vehicles (and Volvo now too). So, do the vehicle manufacturers provide the design/ergonomic specifications for the seat manufacturers (Lear, Magna, others) to construct the seats? Seems like the seat manufacturers/engineers could provide the vehicle manufacturers with options for more comfortable seats. Perhaps you could shoot a video tour of a seat manufacturing plant?
Good point, defo the manufacturers give their design and requirements
i think that the side of new model are very pretty!!
The legs are back in black!
20kWh can fit into that?
Regarding the stiffer seats: owning the GLA and other german vehicles in past with stiffer seats, they do tend to get softer with time. First months though, indeed they can feel uncomfortable.
Is the convertible's back seat the same as the coupe?
Hi Thomas. You mentioned "tachometer" but you meant "speedometer". You did this the other day as well. Tachometer shows the engine revs, speedometer shows the road speed (unless its a German thing in which case I stand corrected). Overall a good video of course. ❤
yeah its totally a German thing. The speedometer is the "Tacho" in Germany
Thomas, again same question as I asked at RS3 test material :-) Would you say this can be more pragmatic choice vs 911 base Carrera ? As fun and more practical vehicle, simply good combination vs 911 ? Pls let me know asap :-)
Thank you for the clarification. I’ve always been confused why a C model would be called E 😂
Ppl forgetting the CLK from the 2000s, that was basically a c class with e class pricing.
Since we wont have a next gen CLS I hope that we will get atleast a 4 door coupe version of the CLE
Probably not
16:27 Is that Sabrine the product manager for the CLE riding in the passenger seat? Reference video ua-cam.com/video/3GTW8Cw6TAc/v-deo.html
i must admit your videos are really good, add some acceleration 0-100kmh and you can compare with CarWow
Thanks 🙏
We dont compare with carwow because we give actual in-depth information on the vehicles 😊
Thomas, please review BYD Seal! Cheers.

Hi Thomas, how was the rear seats in the cabriolet? Same space as with the coupe?
Ye same
It looks like a CLA coupé to me but at least it has a 6-cylinder. It might be able to compete with BMW now.
If the 6-cylinder were non-hybrid, I would be the happiest man on earth.
Another great review from the Motoring Mastermind! Personally I like the inside of the Genesis more. It seems automakers are now streamlining combustion engine ranges given their commitment to electrification.
Thanks my friend!
That's it.
Not sure yet m8!
Where is that? Biarritz?
This looks so amazing. Mercedes really knocked this one out of the park!
C coupe drivers will love it while E coupe devotees will feel alienated with the addition of B pillars
Mercedes gives up the most valuable spotlight which is openable rare seat window in E class coupe….
I just don’t understand why anyone would want a matte car.
We all know the type that will buy one……
4:25 That rear turn signal looks like it could be halogen-based 🤣
Almost 20s to fold the roof 🤔
Yeah that's what I was thinking as well, "that looks like a turn signal found on a mid-tier car 15 to 20 years ago". Very strange decision to design it like that, looks very retro and not in a good way, but rather in a cheap way
Beautiful car But that cheap tablet behind the wheel ruins the atmosphere.
Thanks for the great review. But I don't like the design. The CLA-looking headlights are kinda dated now and also the side profil looks more like a facelift of the C-klasse Coupe and still looks a bit weird and bulky. The proportions of the E-klasse coupe are more stylish. And it gets a bit boring that every front and rear bumper at mercedes are kinda the same.
thanks keep tuning in !
I don’t know, the rear is more of a miss than hit(too much EQ design language)
And then to double down with the *Faux Exhaust*
