  • This big house in a good Tampa, Florida neighborhood is packed with stuff…and shoppers! We wait for an hour in line, finally getting in just when it was set to close. Is this really worth it?
You bet it is! This 60-year accumulation of quilts, pattern glass, sterling, china novelties, handsome furniture and sewing-related items galore is so full, there’s still plenty left for us to shop, and the nice folks running it keep it open longer! We find a stack of neat old quilt tops (even one with 1933 dated newspaper backing), scurry through a garage where a Ford engine and 1950s Florida water skis await, and run upstairs to find dolls, linens and so much more.
A savvy estate sale shopper scouts ahead for discount day, and we make notes of things we would buy if they were bigger bargains...and do we get some! Our return trip on half-price day delivers a great collection of early child's sewing machines, piles of fun and pristine hankies, Limoges and Royal Copenhagen boxes, a misplaced piece of Viking Epic glass and a bunch of other fun antique and vintage items that make coming back three times as expensive as the first round...with no regrets on our part!
We leave with a vintage picnic basket filled with goodies, knowing our online and antique show collectors are going to have as much fun discovering these things as we did when we found them in this fine old Florida home.

I’m so thankful for people like you who appreciate all the creative quilt work that the lady had done and also the charm of all those old handkerchiefs. You saved all those items from oblivion, or the cloth shredders that would destroy their beauty. Thank you George ❤

Sometimes the reason for the newspaper on the back of a quilt is because the blocks were pieced by sewing onto paper. When the quilt top is done, the paper can be removed and then quilted in the usual manner.

I collect hangers too!! It started when I moved here 10+ years ago … our first home was on Bainbridge Island in an old Pan Adobe home built in the 1970’s by a retired Merchant Marine… I found several old wooden hangers in the home… and have been collecting them ever since!! Interesting story… as he was finishing the home for him and his lady friend … she left him for another man and he vowed to never live in the home … so he didn’t!! Lived in a small travel trailer on the property… so we were the first ones to ever live there … moved here in 2013… you could tell it was built by someone of the “greatest generation” from his attention to detail… loved living there!!

Wow, what an interesting and sad story, but great that you got to be first in the house! Bainbridge was so different then, you could live in a bus and build a house without oversight (a lot of hippies did that in the 1970s there). I keep adding to my hanger collection!

Our little Pastor lady at church taught us to sew quilts with newspaper backing and she called them strip quilts. Helped to stabilize tiny pieces while quilting the tops! It was an old trick im so glad to have learned! She taught us to quilt by hand too and sit around a quilt and work on it together! Like going back in time. Miss her 😢

George, you had a piece of flint glass in your hands. After you showed the Limoge banded set you picked up a small clear dish. That dish is a piece of flint glass in the Roman Rosette pattern ca 1830! It will ring like a bell when you ping it!

I had an amish grandma and she made quilts. The pattern was simple but I loved going into ber sewing room. I've never made a quilt but i can embroidery very well. Those are cute patterns. As for the limoge, I absolutely love it. I cannot see why no one would not love it but that's just me.

Newspaper, or paper in general, in quilts was a thing. Batting or wadding was not always available and paper stuffing quilts was another insulating material used. Looks like here it may have been used as a stabilizer, which is a sewing trick still used today.

I am so jealous of your opportunities to buy quilts, hankies and sewing machines. I have a few toy sewing machines, but none as old as the ones you got! All of the sewing items, buttons, buckles, and I am sure there was more. Wow! And, as another commenter said, the damaged ones are worth the $15, too.

  • @CONSTELLATION_PEGASUS

Hey George. Those children's sewing machines were nice. That would be a fantastic way to get an instant collection of them. I've always liked those. I spotted a few doilies along the way. Those would've probably had to come with me. The Limoges was really pretty. It would be a good time to get really good porcelain, since the price is down on it. There were a lot of quilts there, and they were pretty ones. I love to go through all of the handkerchiefs you got. I like the Victorian ones. Loved that 1910 sofa. I have a small gem collection. That book was interesting. That looked like a super-nice sale. Thanks for taking us along!

The price ($25) on the packages of buttons seemed high to me. I love the little sewing machines. The quilt with the newspaper backing is magnificent. It's so unique. Aren't the quilts with the individual's name embroidered called friendship quilts? I laughed so hard and so loud at your comment about the Clinton Esquire cover that I scared all four of my cats. That was totally unexpected. Thank you. 😂 I love the china, especially the pink pieces. How did you limit yourself? I think I could have spent every penny I have and still wanted more. It's so pretty with light bouncing off the cuts and displayed on mirror. I do pick up the more rare and occasional piece of colored. Love the quilts, tops and a nut for antique hankies. Never new they were backed with newspaper. What a treasure trove of needlework and sewing patterns. Thanks for sharing and speaking of which, I need to visit your dentist😁Blessings, George Cat

You're welcome! "Vintage" is really dependent on the item and its category. Toys reach vintage status fast because people grow up, mom throws them out and then they start re-collecting them. On the other hand, ETSY says vintage is 20 years old, yet there are things that are 20 years old that are still in production. To me, 30-50 years is the cutoff.

    Wow! How informative!!
A wealth of knowledge, you are. This was super interesting to watch and learn, your upbeat attitude also made it quite relaxing. (Some resellers can be so anxious to get deals, the anxiety definitely transfers)
But anyways, you’ve earned another sub! Looking forward to more videos 😃
