Good stuff Reg, thanks for sharing some of the thoughts that went into this design. I already have a DMM Captain in a dedicated bag with 45 feet of rope, progress capture and 3-to-1 mechanical advantage, but I usually only bring that up for longer traverses. I think I'll get a RC Grapple to use with my lanyard for more everyday or opportunistic use, as this one seems way more practical and sleek to keep on the harness than the Captain. Should also be better for congested conifers as you mentioned, which we also have a lot of here. Cheers from Norway.
I really didn't know how useful a grappling hook was mate, until I started working in New Zealand, it is just mental how much more effective you can be in the canopy or canopies, your production go up by alot mate. Everyone has a captain hook in my crew but I never was fan on the design of the captain hook, but man, you nailed it with that slick design mate, love it, I'm getting it! and please Reg do the follow up video on you using it. Cheers!
@Recoates oh yeah mate, treetools has it, putting in my order with them in the following days, was based in Wellington, but move up to Northland Whāngarei, 👍
Reg, your resourcefulness and ingenuity is what makes you such a legend! I climb skinny trees to get high in fat trees and straight trees to deal with crooked ones😆 I don't use grapples every day but when I do use them they become a cheat code. Your design is well thought out and I knew right when I saw it that it would replace my other grapple. I never rec climb but I am so excited to try it out, I will be tree hunting this weekend. Can't wait for some epic traversing!
Always great to hear from you Reg! Your ideas and shared experience are probably saving my back and body, in general. Thanks Man! Can’t wait to see you climb device again!
Just recently saw this... very glad youre doing a demo with it. Looking forward to the next one !!! Thank you very much for taking the time... and of course the design ❤👊
after 30 years of treework the accrued knowledge stacks up to important conclusions: thing can be done better/ easier and so on - Innovate! Civilize! ❤👍👏🙏
Thanks, great review! This folding hook will fit perfectly into a small bag with a rope. The review will be complete if it is compared with a competitor, I would like to see it.
Most excellent, most of my career climbing, I used a 8’ pole pruner , ( I was limited to the length of the tool to where I wanted to go ) at that time, movement through canopy at time , was less I was learned .. but using a hook was so much better a few extra feet more efficient.. looks like a great tool for the New climbers with better more efficient, climbing tools. Joe
Reg thanks for the clarity. Cool looking hook for conifers esp. In your next video documenting canopy travels sideways, could you comment on progress capture rigs you like for 10 mm lines please? Ive used prussiks (had to cut one glued up one off in the air no less due to sap), tried Petzl Zillon (on Tachyon but you're right the line is too big and heavy, at least for me, to huck around), and have gone back to 8 mm ocean prussik with a shorty tether and a wrench on the 10 mm Sirius. This part of the throw rigs isn't discussed as much. Your insights would be appreciated. Cheers guy
That's super Reg! Luv the compactness. I wonder if a couple of saw tooths on the light blue side would help for wet weather? Another good example of the RC Arbrella in use!
I have a hook just like the old one I've seen you use and I've been waiting for years to find where I can buy another one exactly like it. I figure I'm going to have to fabricate another one myself. I love using a grappling hook. Definitely an every day carry item. I might try this one. Those captain hooks never looked like something I wanted to try.
You will. Soon as I get some dry weather that won't fog up my camera lens. There is also a link to a video by Notch on my community page here on youtube
I wish it had a slick pin to attach the rope/dog bone sling to so that way you can attach the spliced eye straight to the hook in the tree and detach it and that way theres no carabiner in the system to get caught on anything on retrieval but you can still use your lanyard as a rope for it
@Recoates can't wait! I saw Buckinghams new device at a show in the US also coming out next year. Was very impressed! I have had Spiderjack 3 for last 7 years or so. I love it but very excited for combination drt/srt device
What ever happened to your climbing device Reg? I see a few companies dropping some new devices, and Spider Jack seems to have something with a lever that vaguely looked like what was on your device but they havnt released a full product image yet.
I run a 30' lanyard in a small bag, would you recommend against using this on the lanyard's working end? Maybe the tail (making a long 2 in 1 to still be able to lanyard in quickly), or would it best be suited as a stand alone system?
Does this help support you reg? Our crews definitely familiar with notch but already have the Captain Hook. If this is your idea I’ll buy one just cause. Thanks
Thanks mate, it's treework that supports me.....I've been given a life sentence of it. It's a different tool than the captain. I respectfully highlighted the differences in the video, but without actually saying it. Buy one if you think you'll gain an advantage. If not, stay with the captain.
You are not going to break it. But essentially it is an accessory. As with any grapple hook they are not a closed system, so should not be used or thought of as life support.
It's cool to see ya doing this gear collaboration -- I hope it works out for ya
Throwing the rope bundle with the hook is probably the best piece of information this entire video and I appreciate it 100%

Thanks. I believe they are for sale at Treetools. Just out of interest, where abouts in NZ are you based ?
@Recoates oh yeah mate, treetools has it, putting in my order with them in the following days, was based in Wellington, but move up to Northland Whāngarei, 👍
Slick looking gizmo. A grapple is one of those tools you don't need...until you DO! I have one in my truck.
We do a lot of really wide Valley Oaks. I can see this as a valuable tool there.

Twisting the rope, simple genius, the sweaty mess this technique could have saved me. Will be utilising this in future for sure.
Thank you sir. You are a true entrepreneur in the tree world. I use the rc 2000 all the time and love it.
It's been fun to watch you traverse between trees through the years. You make it look deceptively easy.
Always great to hear from you Reg! Your ideas and shared experience are probably saving my back and body, in general. Thanks Man! Can’t wait to see you climb device again!
Definitely getting one! Working in NZ really comes in handy.
Great job mate👍
👍 Wonderful to see your ideas as the finished product
Looks sharp ⭐ Well done Reg!
Looking forward to your next video
Looks like a great idea, Reg. I like the flat back that allows the hook to retrieve easier.
Nice peice of gear, very tidy. Looking forward to the climbing videos.
Reg "The King of Tree Work" Coates with another game changing device 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Absolutely amazing reg I cannot wait to get one I can't wait for the video where you show the different angles and stuff God bless
Reg, you are so thoughtful. Nice piece of gear & it’s very aesthetic looking.
Kool Reg.. love All Your Invented Gear.
That is a well thought out addition to a harness. Cheers from the UK
Yes reg, have to thank you mate you taught me so much through then years, you were my go to when learning to climb.
Thanks for putting a new "Twist" on things Reg😄!
Just recently saw this... very glad youre doing a demo with it. Looking forward to the next one !!! Thank you very much for taking the time... and of course the design ❤👊
That looks really cool Reg. Can't wait to try one out. Keep up the good work

Excellent as always 🍀💯👌
Wow Reg! Nice tips and product!
Man, I saw this hook at TCIA this year, and had no clue this was you. Super cool piece of kit. Looks great and awesome demonstration of your idea.
Thanks for sharing the detailed information. Reg.
Thanks, great review! This folding hook will fit perfectly into a small bag with a rope. The review will be complete if it is compared with a competitor, I would like to see it.
Good demonstration Reg.
Well, it looks like I will be making an order tonight. 😆 awesome hook bro.
Wow that grapple is so cool!

Nice one mate
👍👍👍

It seems to hold pretty good whatever the weather
Could have used that today in a maple pruning. Excellent new tool! A+B=C took time out of my day for sure …… A+hook =C would have been nice.

I can definitely see it saving you time in the right hands.

@@hcwaffles8912 in 2 years I've never got it stuck or snagged at the carabiner. That's the truth. No need to change something that works
thank you
Gran idea excelente alternativa reg
I see the R C Arborella in the background. Is that a 2.0 version?
Could be, if there's a market
Are you still going to come out with a climbing device??? I have been holding out on buying a new one.... how much longer do we have to wait??
It's also a Notch product now. Due out next year
@Recoates can't wait! I saw Buckinghams new device at a show in the US also coming out next year. Was very impressed! I have had Spiderjack 3 for last 7 years or so. I love it but very excited for combination drt/srt device
Love it
I like 1.5x speed Reg Coates the best! 🤗☺️

If your lanyard is long enough for the task, and your technique is safe, then why not.
Does this help support you reg? Our crews definitely familiar with notch but already have the Captain Hook. If this is your idea I’ll buy one just cause. Thanks

Is it rated for live support?
You are not going to break it. But essentially it is an accessory. As with any grapple hook they are not a closed system, so should not be used or thought of as life support.
BULLET LINE WEIGHT, im waiting for You & Notch to make the Coates Bullet
Sold!
That carabiner may get stuck on stubs when your pulling the line. Sweet hook though
You'd think so. But in the 2 years I've been using one it has not. Although I would recommend oval shape over pear
Why does Reg looks like if Kurt Cobain and Eddie Vedder had a baby?
And a voice like Jonh Lennon.... Reg is a very calming and cool dude.
Not Green the Notch color. I bet Reg demanded blue 😊

Why made in Taiwan
My guess us they do a great job for less $
👍💩
