    It's gas! 100%

      True.
Most people associate the pneumatic with air tools.
But hydraulic cylinders don't "bounce " because the oil is not compressible. So it has to be air. I don't think it is a closed system. Might be...
I'm going to have to take one apart now...
Or I won't be able to sleep

This isn't hydraulic. You mean pneumatic.

      Hmm...
      I don't know for certain.
Hydraulic means if uses liquid to dampen the action, while pneumatic would mean if uses air.
Without taking it apart I can't say for sure.
      So...
To better work the search algorithm it seems hydraulic is a more common term.
On a whim, I just put pneumatic hood struts in Google, and it returned hydraulic hood struts on Amazon.
      Least common denominators I guess

None of the hood struts on Amazon are hydraulic. The "hydraulic hood strut" search turns up pneumatic struts. I gather that the term is being used improperly in the same way that someone saying their car has "mag" wheels, they are not suggesting their car's wheels are truly made of magnesium.
In order for hood struts to be hydraulic they cannot be in a closed system since fluid doesn't compress. A hydraulic system (like the ones in the 1960's MB 600) are wretchedly expensive and incredibly complex, just like those on a tractor.

Right, so we have established the term is a generalized expression, commonly used to mean something else.
Does your MG have "air" / "pneumatic" struts, or the original mechanical?

Well, on further research, it appears that struts like these use both Nitrogen gas and oil (as a dampener) so they might be considered either or both Hydraulic, and Pneumatic.
here is a marketing video from an manufacturer of these products.
