▶ original track: "Don't Go" by Yazoo (1982)
Written by Vince Clarke
Produced by Daniel Miller, Eric Radcliffe and Vince Clarke
Fabulous. One of my alltime fave synth pop tunes. I'm going to recreate it using Yamaha CS reface and 2 Korg ES1s in 2023.
Amazing. Snare and hihat were so budget back in 80's. Thank you !
I was a trumpet player in a 70s and 80s rock band with no keys, just 2 guitars, bass and drums.. so me and the other horn player both got a Juno 106 along with a few others.. but it was the 106 that got us caught up with the 80s and put us on a different level.. it's an awesome synth.. wish I still had it.
10 years ago a 106 was $400
10 years ago bitcoin was $1
And your point is?
@@fender1000100 Exactly.....The Junos worth a lot of money now and bitcoin's a joke......
Man I want a Juno 106 or a DX7 but they are so damn expensive now my low end Jackson guitar only costed me $150.
@@Highrollinhunter Get a Behringer Deepmind 12 instead mate; I got one instead of the Juno X after learning you had to buy subscriptions for additional sounds from Roland! HA! No chance!!!
Excelente 😆
Teacher!!! A genius. I bow to his wisdom.
In a recent UA-cam video Vince Clark actually mentioned most of Yazoo was with a Juno 60 with Pro-one for noise only.
For Roland Cloud Zenology users: these patches translate REALLY well to that platform using the Juno106 module. That bass is lovely. :)
woah!!! great job! I was doing the same with my juno and "nobody's diary". sounds very close
Nobody's Diary was done on a Juno 60.
Excellent. Another great video. I have a 106 too. Well done. Keep them coming.
Very good patches, and thanks for sharing them!
Really thank you very much!!!. Please, you never death.
Greetings from Chile!!!
It’s so full and warm.
Great sounds! I like this analog synth👍👍👍🎹🎹🎹
Great job, thanks for sharing!
Amazing !
Can you send us the single patches files?? It's amazing!! XD
Fantastic man, really appreciate this. I made a lot of progress tonight in regards of understanding juno programming!
GREAT JOB...
Juno does an amazing job of pulling off the Pro One sounds.

Common misconception that the lead was made with a pro one when in fact it was made with an ARP 2600.
@@titovalasques Thanks, I actually didnt know that, always thought it was legit the Pro-One. I watched a video of him talking about by the first erasure album he had been using modulars for several years so it makes sense.
@@lorenmorgan1931 I only found out myself about six months ago through an interview I saw with Vince Clarke.
@@titovalasques Was it the one where he shows off his insane synth collection from hell?
@@lorenmorgan1931 Well he did show off an incredible synth collection so I guess so.
I really wanted to hear all those sounds multitracked to make the song! I feel let down!
Yeah maybe they sounded terrible and he didn't dare to put them there
@@wubwub616 they didn’t sound terrible
That sounds damn close
But how do you think Vince Clarke sequenced it ALL. i.e. WITHOUT a sampler and a midi sequencer at the time? Was some of it hand played I wonder? Tape loops perhaps?
Maybe CV GATE?
@@FranckChoppin, well yes naturally. but every sound?
@liantros retrospectiva, thanks for the reply! You are right, tape sync it is. I know he used MC4 - such a complicated sequencer - it must have been a painfully long task having it all programmed track by track and then tape-synced using essentially one synth. A mad scientist:))
@@karljanus8308
Yes but the.end results were worth it weren't they? Today they have endless daws. And huge work stations. But most of what you hear has no personality. It all sounds the same. Thats because no time was taken to make it sound unique.
I'm going to be doing something similar in 2023 with the seriously underapprecuated Yamaha CS REFACE. I'm going to program all my own sounds. Because it's has none. Then sample them to another underappreciated gem the Korg microsampler. And upload the results to UA-cam
I will have a go at DONT GO doing this.
@@fender1000100 Let us know when you finish the track!
Guy that is so perfect! :D Very good job with your Juno, sounds like a Pro-One! You have great sound designing talent!
Thanks Mooggy!
Very good, i have find one Juno 106 recently, I will have to program its sounds, thank you
Excellent choix Frédéric ;)
Good synth the old ones are the best. Hate synths today look cheap and no one does anything excited on them. No imagination. Love old synths always will be the best.
I'm not sure you could say that, Teenage Engineering's OP-1 is pretty cool, and that soft-topped synth thing (that I've fogoten the name of) is cool too.
Scarlet72
I’m not saying all. Yes there are a few but the old ones are just better. It’s not just that. People back then took the synths to the limit and beyond. Today in most cases they do nothing with them. They are not in the same class. You get a new synth you should want to start a new revolution with it. It was so harder back then too. You had to use so much gear to do lots of stuff and now it much easier and they do very little with them. It’s not that I disagree with what your saying. I think it’s more that people don’t try anymore.
tomo heels
Here you go again with the mouth. Your not professional so shut up. Professional people don’t talk like this. Then would reply saying they disagree and giving there reason. So stop talking rubbish. People on here have put reply’s back and not been rude about it but you with your mouth nothing professional there. Talk about brain cells? Well At lease I got some don’t seem you have at all.
tomo heels
No, no one deserves mouth. Your wrong there. No need for it at all. That’s the problem in the world today people think they can speak to people like shit. You talk the talk but don’t walk the walk. Yeah and I was there too with the classic and still are. Today stuff will not be. You calm down your the one with the problem and you should know better for your age how to talk to people.
Super Excellent brother!!!
I loved that (one and only) Yazoo hit and happened to own a Juno 6 at around the same time, but it never occurred to me that I could have pulled all that Vincent Clark likeness out of it like rabbits from a hat … Great work :) Shame you didn’t put all that together at the end to treat us to a full instrumental cover ;)

There's got to be a song around here somewhere
Madison Mars brought me here, wicked take on this classic!!!
Had 2 Juno 106's midied together, run stereo, excellent.
In this song, the Roland Juno-60 patches “Bass 1” and “Bass 2” and “Percussive Sound 1” were heard.
I like Choppin ☺️
Vst ITS súper cool for producer 80's
Yessss
Nice going!
Thx so much
You're welcome Jean Bruce!

awesome job!
Cool! Chuckled at "Contralto", I'm sure they didn't know what part was what when they made the song ;) But it's good that you explain...
Vince Clarke is a real good musician indeed.
Im sure he did. I had the pleasure of meeting vince and andy 😎

Only in the States, Yazoo is the official name.
@Sandra Braithwaite Yup! Sometimes I hate the autocorrect.
👍👍👍👍👍👌👌👌👌👌
haha, I got the plugin and I tried to find these patches but although it seems pretty clear, I just couldnt find the sounds. Sometimes the adsr seemed strange or the frequency of the vcf seemed too low. But I am just starting to get to know the 106 so I may just need to do things differently. And there are some settings that are not on the screen......
I've been having the same issue.. something additional to the core settings is missing. Which plugin are you using?
@@johnghadimi DCO 6, but also if I look at ADSR settings and vcf settings they are unusual.
@@robertsteinberger5667 Pretty cool that this is a free synth! Nice. So I would recommend also playing around with the bender sliders to the left. I believe some of the solution lies there. The ADSR on the arp also feels wrong to me.
And then...

Your 106 looks so pristine amazing
except for the blue buttons that are now green
Kick it!
Did you record the sounds then sequence them on the computer?
Thanks for your commet Michael :) Juno-106 is sequenced and recorded in Ableton Live (multitrack recording + some effects). Full track here:ua-cam.com/video/uGKvGxn4Uv4/v-deo.html

@@FranckChoppin Can you re-created Yazoo's Situation?
Keepin it real for the rest of us green-buttoned, splotchy-blue-silkscreened 106 owners. XD
What voice chips does your 106 have?
Hello Michael! This is an original Juno-106 but I had to replace the six voices last year with six Analog Renaissance voices.
The Analog Renaissance ones are very good and have no problems at all. 1 voice chip has died and another one is on it's way out so might swap them all.
How did you get the detuned sound?
Hi Michael! You can see all patches settings in this video ;)
I see the patch settings is it Poly 1 and the PWM/LFO that gives it the detuned sound?. Ive never heard a Juno 106 that can sound like that.
I just got a fully restored Juno 106 and I've tried repeatedly exactly copying your patch for the lead and it does not sound the same at all, like Michael said it sounds like it's detuned or something.. what am i missing here? After copying your patch to an exacting degree I tried changing specific parameters in minuscule increments for a good couple of hours and nothing I did got it to sound as rounded and fat as it does on your video.. I don't get it..
Great stuff! Are these the original patches for the 106? Thanks
Gremio is better
Pro one, not Juno......but these are really close, great job
Yes, I mention this famous synth in the video description ;)
Franck Choppin ah I didn’t read the description... but honestly you did such a great job
This seems like the piano that was used in the 80's
It’s called a synthesiser. And I believe it was used. But only for the bass
Seeing as it came out in 1984 that would figure perfectly ;)
That's not a piano
Song genuine composer secuencial circuits
Do you have a Roland sh201? I tried to convert or assign/modify these settings to the 201 and it's not even close. It sounds very dull and muffled with the pulse wave not matter how you filter it lol
These are like 95% there.
wow u did the whole sing...now get alison lml jp
Now there is an inexpensive software version of Pro One: u-he Repro-5. This demo was done with a beta version of it.
ua-cam.com/video/VIvx_eqINcs/v-deo.html
can someone tell me why sometimes they're called "yazoo" and sometimes called "yaz"? my 12 inch singles from the 80's all say "yaz" is it a copyright thing? anyway, playing yaz and depeche mode on my cheap little yamaha always makes me happy! this was fun to watch!
Yes. I believe there was already a band with the name in the US so they changed it.
#djrtnyc
Royal Tee is correct. There was another band called "Yazoo and the Plastic Population." My copy of Upstairs At Eric's (that I bought new at ye olde record store when I was 13 ) actually has a "Yaz" sticker to cover the "Yazoo."
@@celebutante Not so, but Royal Tee is still correct. Yazz and the Plastic Population were also a UK act and there was no name clash. Yazoo were renamed Yaz in in the US because there was already a band there called Yazoo.
@@user-qf4zs6qj4c I've never seen someone make the stupid mistake of yazz and the plastic population. I doubt I'll ever the USA yaz band stuff.

does anyone feel like this synth is a bit overrated?
No one who owns one thinks that at all. That's why I own two.
Robert i'm not saying is a bad synth. I own one and i still use it alot. I just feel like for the price u can probably get something better.
Like what?
a used Prophet 6 prophet 08 maybe you can get two moog mother 32. I'll say it again the juno 106 is a fantastic instrument, even tho is kinda limited on its specs. Yes the synth is cool and usually sits good on a mix
Great synth.Really easy to program if you know the basics.
Tres bon boulot, juste peut être quelques fausses notes dans l'arpège.
Do you have the notes? :(
Don't know how much of it IS synth, but have you done a tutorial for this one - ua-cam.com/video/9w-n0GrkF8E/v-deo.html - either a good synth back beat, or a good guitar player LOL.
got a casual 1000 USD? lol
The TAL-U-NO plugin is $60 and has a free version. You can make it on the cheap!!
@@tmccormick892 yeah I know I was joking lol
Good arp sound, not right notes.

not close... sorry. The main sound are from ARP2600, drums from TR808 and Pro One.
Yaaaaaawn
Not bad considering that the original was created on instrument that were far more expensive. I owned two Juno-106's midied together. Loved the sound...especially for the money.
Please, the original sound "clap" of Yazoo ¿what rhythm machine does is generate? I don't think it's one TR 808 beacause the TR 808 doesn't have that exact "clap" sound
Thanks.

Thank you man!
Franck Choppin .. You should probably add that link into the description of this video, so people can listen to both, in succession.
Mr. Choppin, have you created loops or samples with the drum sounds?
I recorded drum tracks like the other synth tracks.
cool
Wish I still had my Juno 106's. I had two midi together. Banks A were duplicate sounds for fatness. Elec Pianos, Strings, Brass, etc. Banks B were complementary sounds Two different sounds. Nice fat sounds that I would put up agains the sounds of a Jupiter 8
Wish I still had mine too. Sold it years ago to pay the Mortgage one month.
Kind of confused by your comment about the Banks A & B. How are the factory preset patches “duplicate sounds for fatness” for Bank A and “complementary” or “duplicate sounds” for Bank B? There’s only one DCO (with the Sub providing a non-detunable second oscillator) and 5 voices, so I’m not sure how anything could be duplicated/doubled.
