- The lone Dalek in Episode 6 was the first to receive the choir treatment, but this cue really came into its own towards the end of Episode 12 as the Dalek fleet is first revealed lurking in space. It was recorded in 2005 at Air Studios with the Crouch End Festival Chorus. They were a pleasure to work with and I hope they'll come back to the show. - Murray Gold

The daleks need to go on a bit of a hiatus. And when they are brought back, it shouldn't be announced to the press and the first we should know is during the episode they return as this theme starts playing
The Daleks actually have to appear in every season- something about copyright issues fro the Terry Nation family. They only allow the BBC to use the Daleks if they KEEP using them. They got around this during one of the final tenth doctor series- series 4, I think...? I'm not sure- By having the Daleks make an appearance in a flashback in the waters of mars story. They did the same in a recent series by having the Daleks appear in a short segment, where they were trying to kill a freaky water alien by leading it through an active Dalek war zone.
YESSSS! I still remember how shocked everyone was to see the Daleks appear at the end of Army of Ghosts. One of the greatest clifhangers ever.

If the Daleks need to be fixed, here's a good way to do it:
-Use them sparingly
-Never announce that they will appear
-Use this theme to indicate their existence
-Keep numbers small unless nessesary
-Make them finish the episode/2-parter with a high body count

I think the final arc of series 1 is the perfect example of what you are saying. I first contacted Doctor Who in high school and even then I couldn't see Daleks comming at all as the final boss of series 1 and I was honestly terrified seeing armies of Dalek space ships out of nowhere thinking that all hope is lost.

Asylum of the daleks was a good episode if only for the twist at the end with Oswin and Amy and Rory fixing their marriage, but my GOD did it turn the daleks into a joke.

Say what you will about RTD, but one thing he knew how to do well is Daleks, or what the scary thing about them is supposed to be, the absolute singlemindedness wich with they'll destroy everything and the "perfect soldier" (obedient) You'd think great technology would come with great civilization, but... some are eloquent, some have hints of personalities, they are technically individuals, they even use subterfuge and cleverness/ragmatism, it's not like they're robots or simple beats. But they still act as one big war machine because all they want is to destroy...

Im still don't understand why they are not like the Cybermen but with dalek technology. A humanoid body is much better as her tank form
CUBETechie: the daleks represent humanities past. They are a big metaphor for the nazis with their obsession over purity. Whereas the cybermen represent humanities future and thus a metaphor of fear of advanced technology and extension on life span. I feel the Cybus cybermen were made a bit too much like the daleks with the whole “ delete delete “.
It makes sense that they're one big war machine because, that's what they were created for; The Daleks we all know and fear are leftovers of a weapons plan that gotten out of control.

Yep. I feel sorry for the people who have only gotten the slightest taste of what the Daleks are supposed to be like in this finale (and the episode "Dalek").
You think the Daleks got ruined? What about the Cybermen? They got turned into something out of a preteen anime, hideous rounded and cutesy design that took all of the terror out of them.
When you first saw how vast the Dalek fleet was and stared upon the impending doom of both the universe and beloved characters.
A race so infamous for their hatred for all life, so bent on destruction, they were physically warped by it.

My favourite part is around 0:18, the first time you really notice that Daleks are around. Also used in various episodes too.
This is one of the most ominous NuWho musical pieces. I'd put it up there with the 60's Cybermen theme for it's scariness value.

To put it into Civilization V terms, this one would be their "peace theme", and The Dark and Endless Dalek Night would be the "war theme".

Stolen Earth will always be my favourite Dalek story from the revival, so I'd have to go with the music from that.
i really like the whole choir element of 05 doctor who as it has this whole ancient vibe that makes the concept of other alien societies far more interesting
The Daleks scared the hell out of me. Whenever I heard this music in the episode I would freak out....Still loved them though! I think they've lost something a bit after Series 5. :( I mean, rainbow Daleks? Who thought of that?
I think the best use of the last mintue and a half of this track was at the end of Army of Ghosts. I cannot listen to the last thirty seconds without hearing Dalek Sec say "LOCATION EARTH. LIFE FORMS DETECTED. EXTERMINATE EXTERMINATE EXTERMINAAAATE!!!"

It's the mid-to-late 00s, little teenage you is watching Chris Eccleston as the Doctor, he pushes a couple buttons and THIS THEME kicks in.

And then the Daleks emerge from their doorways, and your grin goes from ear to ear. You're happy, and you don't know it.
What I like about the music in series 1 is that it was before Murray Gold decided to go full orchestral. Sure this is still pretty orchestral, but it has a few moments in it where it feels and sounds like classic who! It's not over the top orchestral like his music is now. It's a perfect blend of both new and classic elements!

Early Davies Daleks, threatening and horrifying. Then they slowly derailed, their mockery in the series 4 finale beginning the construction of the threat factor's casket. After Moffat's takeover, he completed the casket quickly, threw the Daleks threat factor in there, and started hammering the nails in the coffin. Chris, I'm begging you, don't overuse them, make them threatening again, use creative ideas that aren't made using bullshit from the ground up.
Well good news for you, apparently series 11 isn't going to have any old enemies. No Daleks or Cybermen.

@Super Fish. We will see if that actually holds. Chibnall had also stated that there would be no series arch, then the second episode brought up the "Timeless Child" which sounds like arch material to me.
So maybe he was being truthful about no returning enemies this series, or perhaps he lied to make their appearance a surprise. I'm honestly not sure which it could be at this point.

Thing is, Moffat's Daleks are much more like the classic show's versions of them.

LOL I'm a Hebrew speaker and I juwt noticed that the phrase that the choir is actually singing is מה קורה - Ma Ko'reh; Hebrew for "What's happening" or "What's Up?".
imagine not realising the daleks could fly after being conditioned by their old counterparts and never actually seeing them fly......then when you watch the episode dalek those idiot humans think they trapped it at the bottom of the stairs and it just looks up at them and this theme starts playing and you can hear the smugness as the dalek goes "ELEVAAAAAATE!" and starts flying.
at 1:06 there’s a bit of music that i remember from the dvd of the second series, where you select an episode. i’ve been looking for that piece for ages and finally found it

One of the characters in the book I'm writing is technically a protagonist, but he's about as merciless as the Daleks. One of his titles is 'the boy that broke a thousand men', even though his final kill count is probably higher. I think this music would perfectly suit him.

the thing that's scary about the daleks is that they have the ability to bring the doctor so low and get him to absolute rock bottom. almost nothing else in the universe can. the daleks have immense power and numbers that they are the stuff of nightmares

I adored the Davies era Daleks, such brilliant story. Everythig went wrong with the Daleks when Moffat took over, they lost consistency, story and even popularity. Hopefully Chibnall can breathe new life into them, the same goes for the Cybermen, who are my favourite villians of all time, I would hate to see them disgraced

Craigers sorry for you man Chibnall has said the new season will have no Daleks and only a new roster of villains which I think is suicide for the series. You don't not fix errors like moffat's Daleks and replace them with nothing leaving them on a bad note. I don't think Chibnall is going to be successful in revitalising the series, he's no expert showrunner like RTD was and I hope he isn't the nail in the coffin for the series.
TSgaming to be honest, I'm okay with them not having the Daleks for the next season. As much as I love them, I think they're overused and have been run into the ground a little bit. Give them a season or two off so when they come back it'll mean more.
You're mostly right, but I think the beginning of the Daleks losing their status actually began in the Davies era with the Daleks in Manhattan two-parter, which made a lot of missteps. They were great in Stolen Earth/Journey's End, but their first blemish was definitely before Moffat took the reigns.

Those daleks are a reference to the old coloured ones from the old days. I think they're pretty cool.
I miss the RTD era Daleks, though I'd say the Chibnall era is starting to do them more justice. This theme, though, this was the most 'oh shit' sound, no matter how many times I heard it play.
