Rachel, thank you for the helpful review. As a beginning bassist, currently learning on a Kala Journeyman u-bass with flat-wound strings, my head says I cannot justify getting the Pee Wee bass at this time. But that doesn’t mean my heart agrees!
Sweet Rachel, thanks. One is on order for me for a few months now, looking forward to getting it. I thank you for the review. Will be playing it with my group when I get it.
Such a beauty, Rachel! I recently started playing bass guitar and thinking about getting a u-bass for portability reasons. Thanks for buying and reviewing stuff for us 😀
Thanks again for this review. A fantastic instrument. Excellent quality. Seeing your instrument being crafted is great. I love the sound. A custom hand crafted bass for that price is a bargain. Well worth the wait. Thanks again. Cheers.
This was great Rachel. I absolutely love mine! I don’t have fretless or double pickups. It’s such a pleasure to play. My group really loves the addition of it and prefers it over my Kala with flat wound strings. Not a fan of rubber strings, tried black, brown, etc. all seem “sticky” to me. Had to keep moistening my fingers. I ordered a Fender FBSS 610 short scale bass case and it fits fine. The Fanner pee wee bass is a great, well made instrument and as you demonstrated, great to play.
I'm so glad you are liking your Pee wee and that you got a case that fits. I know not everyone likes the rubber strings but if you and your group are happy with your sound that really is all that matters. Very much looking forward to seeing it one day.
Rachel, this is a great video. I love your demonstrations. I just bought an Ibanez Mikro bass to get my feet wet. If things go well, I will invest in a smaller scale like this one. Thanks again.
@@UkuleleWales Actually, I returned it. I have decided to purchase a flight mini bass whenever they become available again. For some reason, I can’t seem to find a US dealer and they don’t seem to be on sale at SUS. Your review was very helpful in my decision! Thanks again for all your hard work!
Pee Wee is spectacular! I love him. I have a set of Bose speakers plugged into my laptop, and Pee Wee's sound literally buzzed them! Cool! And let's hear it for that strap. I love that, too! Oh, and Jaco Pastorius! I first discovered him many years ago on one of Joni Mitchell's albums. He is such an original. I like your quote. He also said something like: "Music is the only thing that keeps the planet together." When I'm in a certain mood, I have to agree with that. p.s. I had NO import tax on Pixie. It's the one music-related thing I can best you at. 😉
Jaco really was a one off, fairplay. Thinking of name for Pee Wee, Jaco is actually in the ruuning, along with Herman......... want to have a good think! You lucky thing with the omprt tax, I'll give you that win LOL
I can’t give you the exact gauges as I don’t know what strings they are. I do know they are slightly heavier than the Flight strings and probably more similar to the new Kala flatwounds which are .049 .069 .089 .109. I hope that helps. 👍
Hello Rachel. In this demo you said you were looking for a gig bag for you Pee Wee bass uke. Were you able to find one? If not have a look at the Thomman bass/baritone gig bag. I recently purchased a Harley Benton solid body bass uke from them which had no gig bag with it. At the same time I also purchased a gig bag. When they both arrived I realized the gig bag was larger than others I have. I measured the internal size which around 33" long by 19" wide. I thought this may solve your problem. Gary.
I think about starting to play the u bass. I'm still searching for the 'right' instrument for me. But I'm glad that I found your channel on that search. I can listen to your videos all day long. 😄 and I must admit I'm a huge fan of aliens and space. I not only want this instrument, but I want your decoration as well 🤣
Thanks Keith. I do have a Fusion bass ukulele case but it's a couple of cms too short and the guitar cases seem a LOT bigger but I'm still considering options.
Hello Rachel- I’m interested in purchasing a Fanner Pee Wee Bass but would like your opinion on the tuning. Can you tune your bass in the standard bass tuning EADG?
Hi, love your you tube posts, l have recently taking up playing a - Kala, it’s going well so l thought ld treat myself to a tiny boy bass and l would be more than grateful for your advice . I know the strings would be different being metal, but l don’t seem to be able to get much sound from it and wondered if my amp isn’t strong enough l have a fender rumbler 25 amp. Would really appreciate some help, many thanks.
Hi Jan, are you talking about the Tiny Boy being quiet? If so, don't panic, it will be because *I think* they are also passive like the Fanner, so compared to a Kala Ubass they do seem much quieter. This is why I've found using a Behringer pedal gets a much better volume as well as a better tone. How are you finding the Tiny Boy? Nice to play? Can you confirm whether it does or does not have a battery?
Did you say this one is not a bass uke, nor is it a bass guitar?? Please explain more to this newbie what is different about it? Is it tuned GCEA OR EADG? The strings are metal? Is it heavier than our Pathfinder ukes? Please dish with all the details! I just bought your Team Strings Double Bass book but was very surprised that it didn't have any lyrics in it 😢. And wasn't it supposed to come with an audio cd?
Hi Carol, size wise it is much smaller than a regular bass guitar and slightly bigger than a "regular" bass uke but there isn't really any definition as to what constitutes a bass ukulele. It sounds and is more like a bass guitar to play because it has magnetic pic ups so the strings a all metal strings whereas a bass ukulele normally has a piezo pick up which needs a nylon core in the string or the rubber strings. It isn't much heavier than the Pathfinder ukes. The Team strings book is an instrument teaching method so no lyrics sorry. It may have downloadable audio as I think they may have replaced the CDs.
The peewee just has a tone knob whereas some have bass, mid and treble. Do you think there any advantages or disadvantages in the different systems please Rachel
Hi Malcolm, great questions. I think you can get more of a tonal range with seperate 2 or even 3 tone knobs but if I'm honest, I'm quite happy using this system too as I can always get a tone I like even with just the one tone knob whether it's on the Pee Wee bass or any other bass guitar - think Fender Pecision only has this set up too. I have though been messing more with pedals to really get the sounds I want.
Thanks Fred. TBH I don't know. Maybe something worth thinking about, I might ask Brian Fanner about it as I may well look to get a fretted version in the future.
Sorry this has taken a while but a massive congrats Loree, would love to see pics in another SUYUs ones day. I thought mine was quiet too but then remembered that they are passive and in that respect, very comparable to a passive bass guitar volume. I am finding the Behringer pedal does a great job of boosting the sound. Hope you are enjoying playing it?
Hi Anthony, it has the same tuning and pitch but is even smaller than a 3/4 size bass. Generally scale of 3/4 basses are between 28" and 31" but the u-basses are around 20"-23" scale. Hope that helps.
@@UkuleleWales yes, thanks. I decided to buy a short scale bass last week and have been having great fun with it. I keep approaching it like a guitar and try travis picking on it! I need to get the basics down
Hi carol, technically the "ubass or u-bass" is a brand name for the bass ukuleles that are made by Kala. You don't make chords on these, you play the bass line.
@@carolsingh2287 The vass line is the music that the bass instrument plays. It normally follow the root note of the chord so if a ukulele is playing a C chord, the bass would normally play just a C note. Hope that explains.

I just found out that Fanner, on the web site, has a link to a Peewee demo on UA-cam, and guess where the link took me? Awesome! 😄
