Synopsis:
Writer/director/producer M. Night Shyamalan returns with an original thriller that delves into the mysterious recesses of one man’s fractured, gifted mind. Though Kevin (James McAvoy) has evidenced 23 personalities to his trusted psychiatrist, Dr. Fletcher (Betty Buckley), there remains one still submerged who is set to materialize and dominate all the others. I absolutely love the reveal of The Beast. Climbing walls is usually a bare minimum display for 'powers' in superheroes or villains. But after the movie builds itself up as a universe the lies on a thin line of reality and fantasy, seeing him like that was terrifying and bone-chilling.
truly, that was the line the movie was toe-ing, whether they are just distinct personalities or something more, and how each different personality actually experienced physical changes.
I love this movie and I think he played an amazing freak so good!
The beast is basically as strong as an actual ape or chimpanzee in order to be that physically strong. The guy basically turns into a werewolf.

He’s a dark man who so desperately wants to try and do good by Kevin all the while struggling against his nature. The fact that Kevin portrays that perfectly with his tense way of moving and talking and facial expressions is AMAZING
My favorite scene is when they’re trying to escape and push past Hedwig, who struggles physically to hold them back. Once Dennis takes over, he easily overpowers them as he’s a grown man.

He doesnt get an award because this movie is an extremely gross portrayal of dissociative identity disorder, and borders on slander and has single handedly made most of the stigmas surrounding DID, it's amazing it was allowed to release at all so no, he doesnt get a fucking award.

I don’t get the impression the director is poking fun at the disorder, or glorifying it either. It attempts to delve into the intricacies of said disorder, and also into a kind of fantastical supernatural/scientific take on human capabilities. In this case, using pure animalistic rage and an Adrenaline fuelled state morphing the form of James McAvoy’s character. I don’t think M. Night Shyamalan glorified the fascinating disorder he attempts to capture. How accurately he does it, Idk enough about the disorder or have seen footage of somebody with it. I don’t think any additions of comedy or wit he added was to to poke insidious fun at the disorder, it was to lighten up the tone of some chapters scenarios that were so dark and full on. Comic relief for some distressing scenes, and a distressing disorder. Nonetheless an impeccable acting performance.

@@heathd.m3136 agreed, there's movies with actual insulting representation of mental illness and nobody says anything, not sure what's the fixation with complaining about Split, maybe it's because people hate the director and love bitching about his movies, don't know... This is one of his few good ones, just enjoy it and realize it's a fantasy horror film not a documentary on this disorder.
James McAvoy is such an underrated actor, he plays really amazing characters. Plus, he can play 23 different identities, which is literal talent in itself. Its amazing and just like Leonardo Dicaprio, he deserves an oscar!

Jason Krane i agree with James, but Shyamalan is another statement. Back in his prime he got critical acclaim, his movies were great, but something happened along the line and now they’re all shit. This movie has been the only exception due to the fact that he wrote this script a long long time ago, back before he was seen as a joke. Hopefully with this movie he’ll be able to bring some of his old mojo back but he already has a bad reputation in the industry

And it's the same for many other systems I've met. You can tell this film was written by someone who never even bothered to look into DID just by how they interact and act around people. No alter is "bad". Yes there are some that do harm but they arent necessarily "bad"

I remember seeing this movie with my family shortly after it came out. A random Wednesday night, we were the only ones in the theater, about 6 of us. We were all floored. One of the most compelling performances of recent memory. Bravo, James McAvoy.
People, Barry is a real personality. Barry was the main dominant personality who just wanted to protect Kevin but later the main personalities that took over were Dennis and Patricia. Yes Dennis was impersonating Barry in some sessions but Barry isnt made up by Dennis. Barry was replaced.
Barry was the one that cared for kevin. He probably would had worked with kevin so kevin could be dominant again.

The acting James McAvoy does in this movie and X-men: First Class are absolutely unrivaled, definitely an underrated actor.
The fact that Kevin asked Casey to use the shotgun to kill him is heart wrenching. His death in Glass was what he wanted but not how I would’ve expected. Still loved the Unbreakable Trilogy

The moment he finally controls his personality disorder is equivalent to a psychologists “break through” with patients who have PTSD. It’s much harder as illustrated, but even severe cases of dissociative disorder can be managed with treatment. Fascinating movie.

I can certainly said that the most survivor person in the whole movie it's Casey. Casey stayed strong for so long.
And I felt so much for Kevin, his life was terrible.

I thought Filth was his best performance and that that would be his defining role, but then years later he absolutely outdid himself with Split and now this is his standout defining role. Wouldn't be surprised if he still outdoes himself in something else the next decade though but this, this is just so memorable.
I love how confused he looks when the doctor doesn’t buy that it’s Barry. It’s very childish and narcissistic. He couldn’t believe she didn’t buy it.

Everyone talks about how hard it is to "become" a character. McAvoy created distinct patterns, mannerisms, and complete personalities for 23, not to mention acting out how some of those personalities acted out others.
A masterclass.
The tiny quirks that McAvoy put in with Ms. Patricia's character really ties in to this feminine side that really makes you feel Patricia is this woman, a separate person from Kevin beyond the male body of Kevin.

James’ performance was so damn good, that as I watched the movie, I could tell what personality he was playing just by looking at his face, without him even saying a word. I’ve never seem anything like it. Simply impeccable.
