I've never been on manifesting tiktok, but the phrase "claim it" is familiar to me. It's a phrase I've heard in American churches growing up. You're supposed to "claim your blessings". Looks like that mindset has been copy-pasted into manifestation

Since I gave up the self help train, I’ve bought a house, got married, passed my driving test - my take is things change when you just go out and do things. Manifestation is just procrastination

The short form content on social media is designed to keep you on the app... watching, liking, sharing, etc. They benefit from you giving them your most precious and irreplaceable resource, time. If they gave you tangible steps for improving your life, you'd be less likely to scroll mindlessly. It's a toxic trap that I, myself, am currently working at escaping

I have often looked at the lives of people who preach manifestation and thought: "don't see the husband, the boat, the house, the happiness or the dream job - why are they still doing this 6 years on?" Meanwhile, Tony Robbins and Deepak will only accuse you of "not doing it right" when you have failed once again, and they keep making bank. It's quite the business model.

People are generally so depressed with their lives. Unsatisfied with their work and the emptiness of their lives. So much so they need to psych themselves up to have any sort of motivation to go on.
PS. Your dog is welcomed to come ‘haunt’ me.

My issue with this type of content is how materialistic most of these goals are. And ultimately they seem unfulfilling anyway. They just add fuel to the envy towards a certain lifestyle, but does it make anyone happier really?

Remember “Everyday is a fresh start”. If you have a day where you fail, pick yourself up the next day and keep going, don’t give up. Putting in the work and effort daily will reap rewards. “Also if you really wanted to you would”. If it is that important to you, you will work on it and if it’s not, maybe it’s time to rethink and reevaluate your goals. Nobody is going to ring your doorbell and hand it to you on a silver platter. You need to work each and every day on what it is you want. Also Caitlin you said it best when she said imagine what you could achieve not spending 23 days on ticktock and putting your time somewhere else. Imagine those hours spent on your goals. 😀

That whole « claim it » thing was popular in the 90s and early 2000s. It was a philosophy of « name it and claim it », often pushed by MLMs and some religious groups. It was part of the prosperity gospel, for example. Often, it tended towards gaslighting people in lower economic brackets and particularly related to pushing their participation (losing money) in MLMs, or donate, or pay to participate in nonsense conferences…

It’s also part of the whole capitalist economy setup to blame individuals for systemic issues. Wages haven’t kept up with inflation since the 1970s, but you can’t buy a house because you have avocado on your toast or didn’t say the right mantra today. 🙄

One thing not many people discuss is the work it takes to get there. Oprah Winfrey said it best in this quote.

People say they don't do things because they're not ready. What's ironic is that they'll never be "ready" to do something they haven't done before. You're going to suck at something new before you'll be good at it. So if you want to do something, try it, suck at it and see if you like it enough to stick it out until you're good at it.

As a Gen Xer (the last generation to grow up without social media) growing up I only had my immediate peers to compare myself to and for the most part I was happy and felt good about myself. Now I find that I have to be very careful about the content I choose to watch. I find the “that girl” content to be especially toxic for young girls growing up right now. That might explain the videos I’ve seen recently mocking the tweens shopping at Sephora. I think it would have made me miserable in my teens. A lot of content on social media can make you feel inadequate and a lot of the time it is aimed at selling you things to cure that inadequacy. It doesn’t help that I already have a tendency to beat myself up when I don’t follow through with what I plan to do. The whole hustle culture is another thing. I feel like we’re being told it’s not okay relax, but I’ve been working for almost 36 years. I’m tired! Thankfully at my age I am getting to the point where I just don’t care what other people are doing. Comparison is the thief of joy. Just do you and be happy. You are enough.

As antidotes to this stream of time and money wasting content, I recommend:
    - A podcast called If Books Could Kill which humorously debunks airport books that peddle in the sort of mush that online influencers then paraphrase for this type of content
    - A book titled Work Won’t Love You Back which is a great reality check on productivity culture and its limits for achievement

I think manifestation is fine, but the issue is that many people think that all you have to do is visualize yourself achieving your goals in order to accomplish them. It's important to have a clear idea of what you want, but you then have to put in consistent work to get it. I see success as preparedness meeting opportunity. So, for me, ~manifestation~ is that moment when an opportunity that will get you closer to your goal comes around and you're able to take it.

We humans we can’t think about the same thing everyday u need a remind her.

I definitely ended up in the self improvement content trap. Then I realised it was time to actually start doing the things I wanted to achieve. Now I’m overwhelmed with choices of things to do & I need a journal for my extremely messy, scribbled out to do list. I gave up on a vision board years ago & now just screenshot anything that peaks my interest for future reference, I’m always amused when I look back through my photo gallery of screenshots & see something I’ve actually done/ achieved/ purchased. But I don’t usually put much thought or effort into it. For me 2023 (& the last few months of 2022) was all about self discovery & 2024 is the year to live my life authentically, screw everyone else’s ideals, I’m going my own way & so far (2023 included) I’m having a great time just being myself.

The manifestation trend is a control issue. They all want to control the outcome but you can't. You can only do something about the process which most "manifesting" obsessed people don't care about.
Also, as you said, we don't control how a year will turn out. Last year was "my year" or so I thought. I experienced a lot including abxse in the workplace. That changes you. I left that job since. If "manifesting" was the key to getting what you want 99% of people with the internet would be rich, glam, with a "dream partner".
Reality always slaps you in the face at the end of the day.

I was into self help for a bit, but i realised the motivational speakers all 1) have no special education or certification that make them more knowledgeable than my neighbour or myaelf and 2) all say the same old empty things.
I also realised what i call "no motivation" for what i'm feeling, is probably more executive dysfunction than actual laziness and lack of motivation. I really really want to work on my sewing project, but getting up from the couch is so so hard, it's like my body lives a life of its own. And growing up, i internalised the "if you really wanted to, you would" and to this day, i struggle with knowing if i want to do something for real, or if it's just a thing i kind of convinced myself i wanted, because i just can't get myself to do the thing. Like, sure of course you need to do a thing for it to happen, but going the "you don't want it enough" motivational route is just really not universally good for absolutely everyone, but it's touted as THE only way to be motivated... idk, i also feel like motivational speakers and self help books just promote constant hussle to better yourself, and for me it's demotivating and exhausting

I found the most fulfilling replacement for motivational speakers is looking for real knowledge. I now read culinary science, started learning about history, watching vids on how to improve how I make coffee, and downloaded art apps like Leo.
It makes me feel like I have so much more to talk about and I’ve become more interesting, which helped with my self worth, friendships, and work relationships.

  • @meeseeeeks
    @meeseeeeks 6 місяців тому +6

This was a good one. The motivation saturation depicted in this vid reached a level of humerous and ironic, I had to have a laugh. 😆❤
I’m so not into the tiktok content… Personally I find it all moves too fast for me - it’s far too easy to become just a quick hit of dopamine (with rarely any follow through...?) I’d way rather watch thoughtfully created long form. Motivational content still has its time and place. I appreciate the act of goal planning and taking time for gratitude/ journaling - but that’s more to give perspective and help break down the bigger picture, gauge next steps.
Social media is toxic. Positivity/negativity, keeping up with the Joneses… The best thing I ever did was walk away from my public accounts about 7 years ago and regain focus on real life. Turns out that was one of the best decisions I ever made for my own well-being, but I had no idea how far things would escalate in that time. 🤯
I still use YT and definitely follow some people who present “motivational” and growth content, but they present it in a very un-flashy way, where you know you’re agreeing to show up for the hard work and that it takes discipline in order to create a better life, etc. There will always be room for improvement and nothing is perfect, but often messy action is the real goal. I’m here for more of that.

Yeah, you can be positive but you also need to put effort into making things happen, having the resources and the knowledge to be able to put in the effort, to be born in a part of the world who allows or appreciates the said effort, etc. Just sitting home and wishing for things is not really a 'healthy' thing...

Ughhhh. lol. I’m obsessive and I love diving deep into content for whatever it is I want to learn or be better at. But it’s not manifest-y. I am very much the type of person who’s gonna work hard to get to what I want. But not in a boss babe way.
That said, I wanted to be the best partner I could be cuz I want to get married… I’ve grown so much in my relationship with my partner as a result. I am negative cognitive biases that I’ve been working on lately - trying to identify the root negative thought and rewire it so I can have a more positive foundation to my thoughts. That’s my “self-improvement”. Really just trying to understand motivations and why we think as we do. I’ve gotten really into Chris Williamson as a result. I love the content on evolutional psychology and other psych topics. I just find the human brain and human motivation to be fascinating.
Anyways. I’ve gone down a rabbit hole or two but I truly love knowledge and understanding things. Haven’t found any of that in a self help book or in manifesting though!

I don’t believe that ‘balance’ can exist on social media and that is because it was designed to keep you hooked on others! It was designed to make you watch other people under the ‘inspiration’ disguise. And the people that are putting the show are giving away a lot of their privacy (among other things) which has to pay off >> by selling you a product, a service, a promise that their life is worth watching. Best decision I’ve ever made was quitting social media. Can’t even remember if it was one or two years ago. My life only got better! Our lives can only be ours if we decide to embrace all its facets instead of running away to avoid dealing with the uglier parts of it and of ourselves. Go within :)

I’m doing a vision board as well as a bucket list of things I wanna do this year at 32 (I’m turning 32 in February). But I’m not going to pressure myself into getting everything off my vision board or bucket list. I never do. Because I think it’s more realistic to stretch out certain goals. They take time to accomplish.

The hardest part is getting started for most people! We have these ideas that are exciting but at the same time it’s all overwhelming because you don’t know how to actually get there
What’s needed is more content on how to set goals and practical steps to move yourself forward like you said
I love all the information on atomic habits you can find within that book and on UA-cam. There’s another concept on the compound effect that’s helpful too.
Both reminding you that nothing big happens overnight and it’s your small daily habits that change you in the long run
Be prepared to course correct and pivot A LOT as you move forward because it’s all part of the process But of course most people don’t have the attention span for that 😅

Manifestation is a real thing… you manifest every single day. Some people work at It more than others and It depends on how much you believe and if you limit yourself on what you believe. Your reality starts with your mind.

Caitlin I loved this and I cannot agree more with the person A or B analogy! I think there is a place for a degree of these motivational type content and there is definitely something appealing about it, after all there is nothing wrong with wanting to better yourself. Although personally, I have never been able to take it all seriously and even if I did, I have adhd so there is almost no way I am going to maintain this sort of lifestyle... let alone keeping those diaries and journals up to date.

This was brilliant! It's funny this has come up actually, I used to be one of those colour-coded fancy planner people and I've recently changed to just using one pen and todo lists because I was driving myself crazy... I'd feel like a complete failure but also be unable to do -anything-, as well as falling into the self-help rabbit hole and the 'buy all the things to make myself feel better' rabbit hole constantly. I'm not sure I really have a point :') other than now I feel a bit better and can look back at this objectively, and I really think this needs to be spoken about more.

There are defiantly people out there who think all their dreams and wishes will come true through pure manifestation and then get disappointed or even depressed when it doesn't happen. Vision boards seem to only be the end goal, not the 'what do I have to do to get there' part.

There is nothing wrong with wanting to level up, and visualization is a great tool to use to help you get into the right headspace to WORK at improving. For example, Olympic gold medalist Mary Lou Retton used visualization to perfect her moves, but she still practiced vigorously.
However, the flaw with manifestation is people believe that if they sit at home, say that they’re “claiming this”, and wish upon a star, they’ll get what they’re asking for. When they don’t get what they’re asking for, they’re disappointed because it “didn’t work”, and to add insult to injury, the “manifestation experts” tell them that it’s their fault because “they did it wrong.” The truth is that the people who got what they wanted put in a LOT of work (money, time, labor) to get it.
As the Britney Spears song says, if you want that hot body, that Bugatti, that Maserati, live in a big mansion and party in France, you gotta work, b1tch!

Just live life. All of this overplanning, etc comes off as a bit control freak induced. And I worry about the emotional effects of it if nothing happens the way the person expects. I also have concerns about some of what these people are telling others that might be total hogwash and cause more problems than help because it's not based on any research or facts. I watch some of this stuff and scratch my head, wondering how much of it is reality and how much of it is a cash grab.

In the military, we call this “50 meter targets” … it means to focus on the now and don’t overwhelm yourself with all tomorrow’s worries. Complete the task in front of you, then worry about what’s next. Have goals, but set them strategically and take it step by step so you don’t trip over your feet trying to sprint there.

  • @pianomanhere

This philosophy of "manifestation" is a syncretistic fusion of Theosophy from the early 1900's, Buddhism, American New Age thought from the 1960s-1990s, watered-down Hinduism, the Urantia Book, and that wretched, toxic book "The Secret," much of this promoted by Oprah, too. Ultimately it means that you can somehow manipulate objective reality by the use of your mind. "It's your fault" is one of the results. Thls philosophy in its extreme ends asserts that EVERYTHING that happy to you is COMPLETELY your responsibility and is CAUSED SOLELY by your mind. I have even heard non-fascist, non-anti-Semitic people assert that the Jews ended up in camps during WWII because of their thought processes. This is clearly an offshoot of the strict sense of Karma and even reincarnation to some extent because by that idea, people are living their current lives because of whatever they did in a pervious life. Look at this long enough and see the absurdity of it all. People can even work their hardest, be focused, etc and still not achieve success. The point is that external factors and unforeseen adversity will thwart many goals and many things are beyond one's control. Have goals, strive for them, but also look at the obvious around you. All the meditation and chanting in the world won't manifest the items affixed to your dream board and life comes hard, with a thud, very frequently.

I do think digesting the content too much without actually acting on it is the downfall. Finding creators that can give you tangible ways to get to where you want to be is important. I for one, always have vision boards as my screen savers. I have been able to attract what's on it in my life as it reminds me why I am working on myself and my goals. I genuinely think there is great content out there and it does help people. But you can't help people who don't want to be helped and at the end of the day, it's up to the person to make it happen. Manifestation requires work and many of the original books out there tell you that. I agree that long-form content is much better for this topic than short-form as it's just a bit of a dopamine boost (which can be beneficial too to hype you up to keep going).

Is it weird that I have 1000 in some video games but it’s not this short form brain rot so I don’t feel that it’s bad? Like there’s a bunch of mental stimulation, planning, strategy and engagement that goes into my gaming. But even after an hour in TikTok I can literally feel the effects on my brain. It’s like hypnotizing. Literally. It’s giving Jim Carey’s Riddler from Batman.
Which brings up a point people used to say video games were destroying brains and they definitely can, moderation is key in life you can’t have too much of anything. But i barely use the app and occasionally get on to see a couple things and an hour or two can go by and it’s jarring. I can’t explain the feeling. Not something I ever experience gaming if that makes any sense. Just wondering if anyone else feels the same and if not I wanna hear from you too

To me manifesting is bullshit. I am an atheist and all these things seem like any other religion that will do nothing for me.
Instead of focusing on what i want, I am trying to focus on what i already have in 2024. I am focusing on preserving my heath, my friendships and my relationship. A new car, a bigger house and another handbag will not truly make my happy. Being consent with who i really am and being surrounded with good people will make happy tho.
