if you have ever been in a huge barn or building filled with things like this there is an absolutely intoxicating aroma......that smell of vintage stuff. Hard for me to explain but i'll bet some other people will know what I mean
All of this stuff was acquired mostly by one guy named Lee Roy Hartung. He collected it over several decades (mostly in the 60's) by reading the obits in the newspapers. When a guy would die, he called his widow on the phone and offered to haul away any of his unwanted stuff at no charge. He then hoarded it for years until he died in May of 2011. His estate was then sold for $3,000,000. I was there and it was unbelievable was he had in that large pole barn in Glenview, IL. I also got the 1931
Puxa!
People often dislike hoarders, and some hoarders are so bad that they will let their stuff return to earth before they will sell it at a fair market price. On the other hand becoming the new owner of an antique vehicle that was stored indoors and last in service before you were even born is a great thrill that is becoming hard to come by. Hoarders like Hartung make it possible for people today to experience this thrill. If it was not for hoarders much more of this stuff would have been scrapped.
Reminds me of an episode of Kolchak: The Night Stalker starring Darren McGavin (the dad from A Christmas Story) where he goes into a forgotten below ground city loosely based on the real Seattle Underground.
I bought the 1931 FORD Modal A Sport Coupe that was in Hartung's collection. It was in very good condition when I got it and I am now in the process of restoring it to its original condition.
this 32 has had an engine swap. notice the numbers on the heads 8BA that is the number of the flatheads used from 1949 till 1953 when the flathead was no longer used. eeven the air cleaner can tell you that much. Great car!
This is great and sad at the same time. He had a knack for acquiring; that's it. I never knew the man, but there is no way you assemble a collection (or hoard) like this without having a screw loose or being a nice guy on the outside and a bastard deep down. Sure, I love all of this stuff but it's sad to see a man that had no plan for his hoarding; and maybe that's what he wanted. the collection sold for $3,957,039. This is no different than the 'Hoarders' show but people like seeing this stuff!
It's basically an addiction. There's a little wonderful moment of gratification when he succeeds in tracking down and acquiring something, and then it's gone, and he's left wanting another little wonderful moment. You notice that nothing has been restored. It's all about getting and hoarding. It's sad. I'm somewhat the same way, but not nearly as badly off.
this man SAVED AMERICAN MOTORING HERITAGE that would otherwise been used up and scrapped over time. without him this would not exist.--YOU SHOULD KEEP YOUR RUDE JEALOUS OPINIONS TO YOURSELF!! lee hartung RIP
I saw another video about this and the person organizing the auction said that they had to bring in a medical examiner because Lee had a human skeleton... Is that something we all might have, huh? Good thing Lee passed away or he would have had some problems I think.
If I owned all that I’d have me a bed and couch in there and that would be my domain wife and kids would always be easy to find me and I’d probably be in a great mood when they came that’s for sure 😂
Rude, maybe slightly.. Jealous, nope... Like I said, I love the story and the stuff, but something's just not 'regular' about it. But you know what?... Lee EARNED everything he had... in the tune of $ 3 million..... there ya go....
@kayakfit Be that as it may, my 1984 falcon im 24, Once if becomes well worn its years of use, Its starting to rust now im keeping her for life putting a car cover on her, and gonna keep her, dont want to see it crushed, my first car and am keeping it, of course im fixing the rust as we speak, At least most of the stuff was in near mint or good condition, and this makes me smile better then being crushed, History Preserved.
