Thank you so much for the video. I can change oil and brakes. That's about my extent. I didn't have the extra $500 to pay a mechanic to change the alternator. I was intimidated at first, but decided to roll up my sleeves and follow step by step. Being broke makes you brave. I was concerned after I had everything apart and parts laying everywhere. But, I eventually made it through and put everything back in place. After jump starting the car, it ran perfectly. There is no way that I could have done this job with my limited experience. I need to do this and trying to gather the courage
Done this twice on our 07 ES350. I didn't have to remove the radiator, nor lift the car at all. I removed the upper radiator hose and the fans, which is very easy to do. Then remove the lower bolts on the condenser so I could push back the radiator about 3-4 inches, which is enough clearance to remove the alternator. The decoupler pulley froze and fried the OEM alternator at 155K. I replaced the alternator with a lifetime guarantee alternator from Oreillys. That went bad at 179K and installed replacement under the warranty. The car now has 215K and the alternator is holding up well. BTW, Gates makes a replacement decoupler pulley and recommends replacing it every 100K - Toyota's maintenance schedule doesn't mention this.

I was thinking about your method while watching your video, I'm trying this today
J V I forgot to add that you’ll also need to unbolt the hood latch mechanism. I think it only has two bolts. Just unbolt and move to the side. This is a time consuming job but nothing too technical. Toughest part is that bolt and bracket behind the alt. Stick your hand in there and you’ll feel it. Helps to have a u-joint extension.
A lifetime warranty on an alternator that’s lasts 24k miles🤦♂️ If you were paying for labor, that would cost you more. Thanks for the comments .. not looking forward to this 🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️
This you tube was great, I followed the procedures and successfully replaced my alternator. Brian's instructions were great. I did want to add a few comments. When purchasing the alternator , inspect the spacing between the arms that fasten to the car. My alternator would not fit. There was a pressed bushing that needed to be adjusted on the alternator. I was reluctant to make the adjustment by hammering to proper position, so I had to return to parts store for them to adjust. Second, I did purchase a turpentine adjustment tool which helped a lot to take tension off belt. I decided to replace the belt while i was changing the alternator. Getting the belt installed correctly was probably the hardest part. The other point, if you use channel locks to help break loose the radiator hose, be careful as I broke the top port and had to do some rigging to salvage the radiator. The job took 6 hours including the trip back to parts store, but well worth the $600 savings to do it yourself. Thanks Brian

I did the alternator in my 07 when I did my water pump. I only took off the radiator support and the fans. The alternator was a piece of cake to swap out when I had the engine jacked up a couple of inches. I took off the thermostat housing, and idler pulleys before removing the alternator. With all that stuff out of the way and the engine jacked up a bit the alternator only took a couple minutes to change out. Now I've got new alternator, water pump, thermostat, idler pulleys, radiator hoses and serpentine belt. The whole job wasn't really too bad at all.

I like to add that, I was able to do mine without having to take the radiator out, the fan assembly can be taken out (3 black tab on top easily pops out) and you can easily take the alternator out without hitting anything, would be better than taking the lines down beneath the radiator. How did your alternator swap go???
Great video with quick step by step instructions. Took all of 4hrs with a trip to the auto parts store thrown in. Recommend renting a serpentine belt tool from auto parts store if you don’t have that ratchet. I did and it made all the difference. I also used it to break the second bolt on the alternator. Just a few notes, when I went to take the panel behind the tire off there was a grommet off to the right in addition to the 2 bolts. No big deal, just took the panels underneath the car off first to get to it. Also, the bolt on the right side and behind the alternator was 12mm. Don’t know if that’s just unique to my car for some reason, but took me awhile to figure out. Other than that watched the video a few times before hand and really appreciated the quick edits.

The bolt on the bottom right attached to the bracket is 12mm not 14mm. I spent way too much time fighting with this until I figured it out
Video is very helpful and on target. It is not necessary to remove the radiator, just the top hose and cooling fans.

The absolute best of videos I found on this change. The only issue I had as that the radiator top is PLASTIC and I broke it removing a stuck hose.
Radiator cost me more than the alternator. Also, just as I finished I found a way to remove that alternator without removing the radiator itself. Bummer I didn't know that at first.

I did not pull the wheel. I used a KD Gearwrench serpentine belt tool and was able to release the belt from the top.

FYI, the 3rd bolt at 7:40 is 12mm, not 14mm. Also, there’s no need to drain the radiator and take it out. I unbolted that middle core support and was able to pull the radiator forward enough to take the alternator out.

How important is it to replace the bolt to the left? The one beside the tensioner. You have no idea the amount of hell I had getting it off. Its long too so I know it'll be hell getting it back in.

I find it unnecessary to keep these plastic covers. My wife ordered me to keep them when I tried to remove them for good. Anyway thank you for your instruction for replacing the alternator.
I had only one other thought that I wanted to mention, about the particular car that you worked on. I noticed that it had fancy wheels on it, and it's been my experience that a lot of times the people that get wheels like that, also get super powerful stereos. Kind of stereos that draw a tremendous amount of power from an alternator. I would think that with one of those stereos, an alternator would go out prematurely. Now since I don't know whether that car had a high-power stereo or not, I can't draw any conclusions here. I just think it's odd that an alternator went out that soon.
And the second thing is just a request. It would be great to see a video of changing the belt tensioner on that same type car. You were part way there by having the alternator out, next thing you have to do is pull the air conditioning compressor, either out of the way or out of the car, to get to that tensioner.

Some people are objects to removing radiator and fan. It could be done without removing radiator and its fan, but it's hell a lot easier taking out alternator after removing radiator/fan.
Great video followed it to a tee except the bolt next to the manifold was a 12mm head 2007 es 350.
Same on the 08. Took us a minute to realize it wasn't a 14mm like he says in the vid, it's actually a 12mm the other two bolts are 14mm

Good instructions from a repair manual.but you dont have to remove trans fluid or radiator just the heat shield and top radiator mount
That was ridiculous! That's a lot of work for an alternator! Never seen one buried like that.
I was thinking the moment he said and then drain the fluid ...I was like wtf. Drain the fluid for a alternator change why? Then I seen how little space you have. But I have to wonder could have avoided all this by removing a engine or Trans mount? And then moving the whole engine a little bit?
Did this today took about 4 hrs didn’t have to do all this just loosen the radiator support so you can move it
Great video super helpful but after changing the alternator I let the battery charge was eventually able to get it to start however after the jump volt meter still showing around 11 Volts and would turn off as soon as I take the cables off should I let it run still connected to the cables for longer or is should I change the battery?

Greetings from the Ohio Porters. 🤩 Checking this video out…I have a Lexus that I think needs a new alternator. I’m checking the battery first, then the old voltage test thing to make sure all is well or if I need a piece of chocolate at that point. LOL! Hope to replace the little things first, then I can tackle the alternator if need be. Will let you know. 😳✌️

Glad I got a Camry with a 2.4 Liter engine. They're easy to take the alternator out on them.
@7:44 it is a 12 mm bolt, not 14. I've just finished the job without taking out the radiator, only leaned it forward until it touched the plastic grill. Of course, I had to remove the 3 ft metal bar on the top of the radiator, come with the central bar, few bolts for horns, the coolant hoses, and the dipstick tube. Thanks for posting the video.

@@norakat Remove 12mm bolt on top, then pull the tube straight up (you may have to wiggle it while pulling it out)

thanks, video was a great help! There is not much room to work in there, even removing the radiator. but, got 'er done. I plugged in my radiator fan, but there is a small wire with 2 holes that I can't find anywhere to plug it in. anyone know where it goes?

On my tracker and my miata, the process involves only removing like 2 bolts off the alternator itself before it can be lifted straight out the top. My neighbor asked me to do this job on their lexus es350 and I'm not sure if I'm up for it now.

The bolt under the exhaust is a 12mm not a 14mm also i did this entire job on the ground from the top even the belt. i did not remove the fans. i loosened the upper core support and leaned everything forward. took about 2 hours. note i was bleeding in couple places lol

Wish there was a way to change without having to take out the radiator. Not a big issue but I guess I should have checked my alternator before changing my radiator. If so I would have changed them both at the same time because I'm sure the alternator was weak a few months ago as well. Most alternator changes I've worked in you have it out and back in in under 30 mins but then again they are on top the motor and don't have to remove anything.
Tempted to talk to a shop and get a quote from them. It's got 193k on it and I figure may need trans oil changed. I believe it is probably low from after changing the radiator because I never drained the trans fluid from the radiator and added that much back. From what I understand filling the transmission is a complicated task.
If I can't find a shop that will put in my new alternator then I guess I'll have to do it myself just such a not having a garage to work in when it's below 50 out and windy. Doesn't help that I only have weekends to work on it and it always seems to be nice weather during the week but wants to rain on the weekends.
Wow that alot of work to replace that alternator is there a easier way to take it out??

Stephen Bay I believe this car had around 110,000. But there's no telling how long they will last. Sometimes their last 30,000 and sometimes the last 200
How to Automotive Well thanks for that info. I am actually quite surprised. The Lexus's are supposed to be quite reliable, and I thought that would include the alternator. Well you just showed me different. I was thinking you were going to come back and say it had 220,000 miles on it not 110,000. Thanks for a great video, and a fast response!
The alt in our 07 ES350 went bad at 155K, but it was not the alt that went bad - it was the decoupler pulley that froze and fried the alt due to overheating. You should have seen how much white smoke that produced! Gates makes replacement decouplers and recommends replacing them every 100K. Wish I had seen that as our maintenance schedule does not mention the decoupler pulley at all.

Hey buddy, I have the same car, and I have never have flushed the transmission fluid completely. I'm at 230,000 miles right now, on my 2007 Lexus es350. What you recommend I should do? Drop the transmission fluid pan, and replace what came out only first? or what? I would appreciate if you please let me know. Thank you.

Great video, I don’t need to refill the transmission cooler again? Or that’s the antifreeze is for also, and if I just have the basic mechanic tools would I be able to get the job done?
213laflows if you crimp the hoses off when you're doing the job then you only lose an ounce or so. But if your transmission fluid is low you can top it off through the dipstick.
@@HowtoAutomotive no trans dipstick on these cars. Only way to fill is by removing fill plug.

Yeh Lexus engine bays are notoriously cramp, they make it hard so u will pay for a Lexus approved mechanic to do the repairs.
@@NVa-yi8bu I think it’s more about it having a v6 and being FWD. I wouldn’t say it’s easy but definitely wouldn’t need to take off as much on a GS

Answer = yes! I just did it. Use a universal joint adapter on your socket.
Its a 12mm socket you nut (lol) love the video

The Lexus I did it had a 12 mm not 14 in the back under the exhaust manifold . Just in case someone have the same issue.

How many miles on this Lexus? Looks like there are some oil leaks presents
PeterGriffin4200 I don't remember the mileage on this vehicle but if I had to guess I would say around 130K or more. Valve cover leak so I comment on this car.
Timing chain cover seal. Known Lexus issue and the labor to fix it is cost prohibitive, something like $5000. Even after repair, its another 75k before it starts again.

Great video, just fyi, removing just the fans will save you a lot of time. No need to pull the radiator and core support.

Hey guys My lexus just died yesterday and I was assuming it was the battery so I went and get the new battery , and right when I put the new battery the alternator start smoking so I disconnect the battery right away , I knew the alternator it was going to died sooner than later but I don't know why is this happening or why my battery is arching as well any advice guys??
Two possible scenarios the alternator is shorting out (most likely) or you’re hooking the battery up backwards.

Thank you so much for this video !!! So far it has saved me over $500. I have one question. When I'm facing my car (2007 lexus es350), the top left side alternator 1st bolt and the middle left side alternator 2nd bolt fit perfectly with my new alternator, but the way at the bottom right side 3rd bolt doesn't line up anymore on its little tiny bracket. Do I absolutely need to have the lower 3rd bolt attached and/or do I need to buy a new little bracket for the lower bottom 3rd bolt ? My new alternator is the Duralast Alternator 15542 from Autozone.
That lower bracket may prevent excessive vibration. Loosen the other end, where it connects to the engine block and you'll be able to twist it around to line up.
Thats a lot of work for an alternator replacement.

So my alternator went out and the shop wants to ch as the me $775 for labor and part. Is that a deal, normal price range or, over price?
So the labor for this alternator is around 4 1/4 hours. Most shops charge around 100 bucks an hour. And the parts range from 150 275 on this car. So it might be slightly high.
The overall quote I got was $1250 if I had satillite cruise control they would have to take off the bumper, which I never heard of that type of cruise control. I replaced mine yesterday it took about 3-4 hours no rushing. Do it yourself and save some coin. This video is spot on for instructions
Is it ok to leave the 3 covers off the engine bay? I dont like them.
They keep the dirt off your engine. I don’t think they’re necessary but maybe it helps with insulating the sound.
Wow, OK so my mechanic's quote of $750 seems more than justified
my battery died today actually we gave it a hotshot drove for 15 min cut off again gave it another hot shot didn't drive and plus we literally just got a new battery so its most definitely the alternator. And also how much are alternators. for 07 es 350.
Christian Wyche sounds like the alternator is not working. Is there a little battery light on the dash if so that's a definite sign that the alternator is not working.

Good grief, all of that to get to the alternator? ... Bring back the flathead Ford V-8. They were simple to work on and had a helluva sound.
