Maybe this will be the thing that finally gets the coast guard to enforce what is fishing and what is not. Too many fishing vessels never put their booms away, they barrel in and out of inlets taking up most of the deepwater with their booms extended for no reason. I try to stay out of their way, but because they always have their "active fishing" lights and markers out, they get right of way over my sailboat, the point where I have touched bottom while trying to keep from having my mast ripped off. I have even seen Fishing vessels on the hard with their markers and lights on. They never turn them off, even when not actively fishing!

That being said, the shrimp boat in the video was traveling as he should have been. And even if the outriggers were out, they are out to help the vessel maintain stability. I will agree with you on the point of if the outriggers are out just to be out, then something should be done about that. However, if the are out for stability sake then there’s nothing that really can be done. I will admit there are captains who are just plain idiots. But it’s been my experience that commercial fishermen usually have more boating knowledge than the typical boater.

I worked that boat Port Aransas pass he did not need a cut the outriggers he should have put them down and fold them straight back would have passed just fine under that bridge tells you he doesn't know what he's doing with the boat
