I love this though. Going from “I have a fun idea, let’s do this!” to “I’m drowning and everything I do is a struggle” is so relatable. I’m glad you kept going and posted the video.
When I have art block, I tend to redraw old art to remind myself of how much I’ve improved - it does wonders for motivation 😩 it also means you don’t have to think of new ideas lol!
To be honest, this ended up being one of the most inspirational videos of yours I've ever seen, Rin. And that's saying something, cause you never fail to inspire me. Seeing you tackle art block like that was amazing. Only artists can truly appreciate how difficult that can be. And even though you may not feel like so, I think the art turned out amazing! You've drawn a very different and exaggerated facial expression. You've used an art supply you're not familiar with. You applied color theory. You completed a full spread in your sketchbook. Those are all really cool achievements!
This turned out amazing! We are always our own worst critics. Because from my perspective, everything you drew and painting here is great! Right on par with most of what you do. I think some of it might have just been how different this is to what you normally draw/paint. Great job!
Hey, Waffles. Hint for gouache: Start with the darkest value. I use reactivating gouache. If you use straight white, with no water, over a slightly damp color, the highlights look great.
Same! Rin is the one who inspired me to start a UA-cam channel of my own for my art, and I love it so much! She opened my eyes new and creative possibilities with art!🌹
I was just explaining to my husband that when he's frustrated with his art he needs to pick out the good stuff in it and focus on that. I was just telling him that Waffles is the best person to watch for this and you come out with the perfect video for it!
Love the message that comes with this video- I think sometimes we get lost in perfection so coming back to something we thought we "failed" at can be a great lesson. Art is supposed to be fun!
I was watching so intently that I literally startled myself as I burst out laughing when you said, "Alllriiight ... this is ugly." Oh, how many times have I thought that while drawing/painting/crafting/etc.!!?? (The world may never know.) I love it when you don't have a solid plan and talk to yourself. *giggle* Thank you for (several) laughs through this video!
I love how you kept powering through the art block!! I think art block comes in different forms for different people, for me it’s just feeling unmotivated to create anything
She honestly talks to herself like I imagine an alien would??? Like, the stuff she says is what a friendly alien might while figuring out how humans & art works. I don't know, it's super cute, LOL. I really enjoy your videos, Rin; keep up the good work!!!
I’ve not been subscribed for long, but I bought myself a sketch pad and pencils for Christmas because of your videos ♥️ Been watching a bunch of old tutorials from Jazza to get to grips on things lol but hopefully one day I can draw along with you 🥰 Your videos and art style always brings me joy ✨
I feel art block so often and it sucks because I get burnt out so easily. I have so many things i get excited for and then I go with it for a little bit but then it leaves me drained and without inspiration. So thanks Rin for this great video, you truly are such a great motivator. And sometimes its good to take a step back and take moment, then come back and you might see that your art is something you actually love, even if you didnt when you were making it.
I actually love the top left painting that you made during the beginning of the video! I would buy a print of that! Also, just because you wanna use gouache doesn’t mean that you can’t use other materials in tandem! That may help with smaller details and more control for facial features etc! Colored pencils mix great with gouache!
With gouache, it's really helpful to start with watery layers and make every layer after less and less watery, so it won't activate the layers beneath it. I've just started learning it and it's really tricky, does anyone else have advice?
Honestly, I think that’s the biggest tip. Learning water control and how thick your layer should be is the key to gouache. My other tip, since it dries so quickly, is if you’re working on an area that you want to be blended or that functions as a unit (like clouds or water), it can often be best to work on just that area and then move your way down or across the painting. I like to block in the whole painting, but unlike watercolor, I don’t do a little here and a little there as I wait for things to dry, and I don’t build depth across the whole piece layer by layer. Instead, aside from the blocking in stage, I try to really work on a section and get it looking the way I want before moving on, and then doing finishing details on the piece as a whole.
@@Thebookrat That's a really helpful tip, thank you! I've been focusing on building up my paintings as a whole but going piece by piece sounds so much easier!
@@L_Aster I think it's the type of thing you learn to make as a judgement call. Sometimes you might want to tackle a piece as a whole; you just kind of play with things and see what works for your style.
Just wanted to say that, 3 years ago, i discovered your channel, and you were the one that motivated me to start drawing. Just saying that you were my idol when i started drawing ❤
I have something that always helps me with art blocks. I tell myself that it's just my style changing; and really, she's right. Looking back _after_ you've been in an art block, those pieces you made? They're a rare breed, something you feel are incredible for seemingly no reason. So, my fellow artists; push on and push through it, keep drawing/painting/crafting! Embrace the feeling of fluctuating style/ability instead of going against it. Experimentation and letting yourself be free help a lot, and it's an amazing feeling to be so proud of your art after an art block!
I really like the final result of the drawing of the clown. It’s really pretty. I love the eyes and the expression of the face. It came out really well.

My guinea pig died on the 26th and I’ve been trying to draw him so that I can do something to “respect him” or something like that and it’s so hard, every time I try to work on the drawing , I cry. Anyway Thanq for not only making my day but making my day even better, I love you Rin🥰 -KT
with gouache I learned it's nice to treat it like watercolor at first, to get everything down very transparent and preserve the white of the paper as your lightest whites. Then you gradually increase the opacity remembering gouache dries darker than it is wet
I love how that last clown made it to the thumbnail and is what i went "omg that's actually a cute clown", and is the one Rin struggled the most with drawing and painting, really shows that you can push through art block and still get something out of it. I definitely agree, skills seems to improve alot more after getting through art blocks! I seem to get it almost every time i sit down to make art, even if it's supposed to be just no pressure and fun scribbles, but then i always improved a ton and usually end up liking the thing i really couldn't stand looking at any longer just moments before. Art block scared me away from being creative for about 15 years, but finally made up my mind to just get over myself and just pick up a pencil or brush and do my best to not have any expectations. Things never turn out the way i invision them but sometimes you make happy accidents and get something better than you thought you could do, even if it's just a minor detail. You won't improve by sulking instead of trying! 😂 Keep creating, everyone, and you will get there in the end ♥
Hi Rin! I just wanted to say that you one of the couple of people that have really inspired me to draw more and get back into art bc I really love it! Now I have been drawing everyday and you have really helped me through some art blocks. Me and my family love watching you and you are like one of the first people my parents actually like watching, even my little sister does. And always remember that your art is great and it inspires probably tons of people. Btw I love you 3 marker challenges and you should definitely do more! Best wishes!! 😊😌🎨👩🏽🎨✏
I've been stuck in art block for weeks and I decided to pick up a colored pencil (no graphite because I thought the color would make it more fun) and turned on a Sleeping at Last podcast and just drew it out like you did. It helped a lot. I love the clown piece! Looks so awesome!💜
Thank you so so much for sharing your struggles with us. I’m going through the kind of devastating art block that makes it hard to even LOOK at art supplies 😂 but seeing you power through and find ways to work with your own block is really inspirational and gives me hope. You’re the best, Rin 🥰
ah! that is so exciting! Hope you're having fun with that!

Hello hello. Not me binge watching the entire channel in less than a month (some videos twice) and now being exited to watch a new video freshly uploaded. So happy to have found this channel!
my boyfriend and i just broke up and i have just been binging your videos you make me feel so much better and helped me fall asleep through my heartbreak. your content helps people who barely even do art thank you so much for creating and sharing ❤️
You did so well powering through and it’s inspiring I’ll definitely think back on this next time I have art block and try to keep my head up. Thank you for posting this. Ps. Love the little sketches you did first those poofy shorts are so cute 💜
This is such a fantastic video, thank you for sharing this with us. It is really valuable for beginner artists, like me, to see that art block comes and goes without rhyme and reason and that it is possible to push through it and produce “something.” I really liked it when you said, “we deal with the issues as they come.” Being able to adapt in the moment and focus on the positives is so important in many situations :)
My best way of getting rid of art block is simply going thru my sketch book. I'm on my first one right now since I've only started on January 2021 but everytime I get the urge to draw without having a single thought of what to do, I just flip through it and pretend I'm making one of those sketchbook flip through UA-cam videos and usually get ideas. Mostly because some of my drawings aren't as I'd prefer them to look so I try to re-do them.
I usually like to sit down and draw with Waffles playing in the background. The clown theme is making that just a touch challenging for me, but I'm going to power through and try not to accidentally draw something that makes me uncomfortable. Nevertheless, love the content and appreciate all the hard work!
Thank you so much for posting this. I loved seeing how you got through the art block in the video and I strongly related to what you were saying. When having art block you're in such a vulnerable place where one drawing can either set you off or make it better. Great video and I think that the results were amazing too. Now I feel inspired to go try draw something out of my comfort zone :D
Just a tip for choosing paints: there's usually boxes on the label. That symbolizes how opaque the pigment is. Basically: empty box is transparent Box with a dash or slash across it is semi transparent (closer to the transparent side) Box that's half filled is semi opaque (closer to opaque) And a full Box is opaque. If you want fully opaque colors, only get the full Box paints. Some never come in opaque colors due to the nature of the pigments (think Viridian) so if you want that one you'll have to mix it by hand to have it be opaque
Thank you for posting this- I deal with that kind of art block so much and it makes it a little better knowing one of my inspirations deals with it too.
i so deeply admire the way you power through difficult artistic motivation phases and still make the most original and stunning art ive seen in modern day.
This is really inspiring because art block like that is sooooo disheartening But when you started to sketch that big, scrunched up cute face I got streets emotional??! It's so cute I love it 😭😭
I honestly don't get the feeling that you are super frustrated and disappointed, you just seem confused and clueless, which I think is totally understandable from the fact that you are using an art supply that you aren't comfortable with and haven't used for years. I still get your usual positive attitude wanting to understand and improve. And the message is really positive! I had some very bad drawing days recently, and made art that belongs to the trash can, really felt overwhelmed by the incapacity of translating my mental picture to the paper, but when I look at them now, I still have some lingering frustration because they were projects I really care about, but I also remember how much hard I tried to "save" them and I am proud I pushed through anyway. After I took a break, I like to write down what I think went wrong, what I like and what I don't, analyzing it through and learning my lesson. Eventually, sooner or later, I'm going to try again with those projects (usually once I manage to let go of all the frustration, which involves some decent art made in the meantime, to kind of get back some of my confidence xD). Thank you for sharing it despite your thoughts on the process, honestly when I look at that spread I see something nice and full of potential (like the outfits, I loved your ideas!). Finally, congrats!, you pushed through! 💪
Haha the first attempt ended up looking like a yearbook picture for clown college. 😂 You, even on your worse days have a talent I am in awe of. All those looked great to me. I can’t draw people. Or anything that requires a 3D look haha. Really good at stick figures. Watching your videos has gotten me to play around in my notebook to see if I could take some of your pointers. So far not so much haha. My medium is hand lettering and mandalas stuff like that. Flat things. I can draw a blub fish though and I have you to thank for that so thanks. 😉
Rin, I just ordered a 314 copic sketch marker set! (They’re used but who cares right!) because I was so inspired by you!!! My Ohuhu’s are okkkkk but they have so few really light ones. I needed the copics! Thank you for showing me how valuable they are for the art!!!
The drawings look great I love them! A little tip I have is to start with a less opaque paint and build it up, I get why u might not have been able to do this on that paper, and maybe use a little more water on the brush it would make the paint glide smoother and be less patchy :) ❤️❤️❤️
I totally think if this was done in marker, you would’ve been happier in the process. Paint is such a difficult medium to have art block with, because it inherently has a longer ugly stage.
You're art is so lovely! Was going through a bit of an art block myself and you definitely inspired me to pick up my pencil for the first time in weeks. Thank you ❤️🎨
"At least I'm not crying yet" MOOD :D I have never painted with gouache, I just learned it's existence last year from some art channel. They seem fun, if I can get around the stickiness. Will try to find some from local art store.
My art block has been really bad along with having no motivation I've done absolutely nothing but I appreciate Rin alwaysss making a video at the perfect time it always helps me get back to what I love
I really like hearing your comment at the start that Acryl-Gouache is just flat acrylic paint! I would add that it is opaque as well as flat! Depending on how much water you used to mix with! I do not believe you were art blocked. I just think that sometimes working out what you want is not as easy as you might be used to. Branching out, using unfamiliar supplies will give you more confidence and will give you a better understanding on how to make different supplies work best for YOU! SO you can create a painting in watercolor or gouache or even acrylic paints with the ease you feel when you pick up a marker or pencil for a sketch! I believe that is why so many artists like their sketches best! Moving the sketch onto a finished surface like good papers or canvas is a learning curve we all must go through to become a better artists! I truly believe you are becoming a real Artist! Not that my opinion truly matters, what you believe is the real measurement! Keep working Rin, I enjoy watching your Art Journey! Thanks for sharing!

with gouache I learned it's nice to treat it like watercolor at first, to get everything down very transparent and preserve the white of the paper as your lightest whites.
I absolutely love her silly little face. Your characters are always so adorable, but she just makes me smile.
Your art block and my art block are completely different. You develop something that looks amazing whilst I stare at a blank page. 😂😂
Early! Also I got posca pens and 3 sketchbooks all because of you because you inspire me so much, I love your drawings and your channel ❤️
ah! that is so exciting!
The third one makes me think of the big comfy couch lol
I absolutely loved that you didn't give up! Thanks for sharing!!!!
Aw Rin that clown looks amazing!! You should be proud of it
This character reminds me heavily of the characters from the show The Big Comfy Couch!! Love IT SO MUCH💕✨
You did so well powering through and it’s inspiring I’ll definitely think back on this next time I have art block and try to keep my head up.
Wonderful tip!!
This is sooo amazing! Beautiful artwork, I Absolutely love it!!! 👏👏👏
Basically:
empty box is transparent
Box with a dash or slash across it is semi transparent (closer to the transparent side)
Box that's half filled is semi opaque (closer to opaque)
And a full Box is opaque.
If you want fully opaque colors, only get the full Box paints. Some never come in opaque colors due to the nature of the pigments (think Viridian) so if you want that one you'll have to mix it by hand to have it be opaque
Oh my gosh! You are so creative! I look up to your art style so much! You are such an awesome artist! :D
I love this concept! I have been really obsessed with clowns lately and this gave me so much inspiration ty!!!!
The first drawing is what I imagine Wendys and Mcdonalds child would look like XD
Edit: I love it tho
I’m so excited! I’ve been binging your videos these last couple days and now I can watch a new one!
ooo which was your favorite?
@@drawingwiffwaffles hmm I love all of your character design videos, especially the cheerleader one!
the fact that my hypoerfixation this week IS CLOWNS!!!! Rin you made my 2022!!
Ive been so unsatisfied with my art lately. I know this video will really help me a lot. Thank u so much, Rin
i understand that feeling. there is a lot that goes into art block and I hope you're able to kick it soon!
Was actually sketching while watching your video and it didn't suck
Don't worry about it, just enjoy the process.
These are giving me candy land character vibes. I'd love to see you reimagine those characters in your style for some nostalgic fun
I liked your all videos....The Way you Talk....The Way you present your art... That's Amazing. God Always Bless you Dear. 😊👍
The finished clown girl kinda looks like the child of McDonald's and Wendy's
I love how you draw so much, you are amazing, incredible, OMG I can’t 😂 ily 😘
Thank you for posting this- I deal with that kind of art block so much and it makes it a little better knowing one of my inspirations deals with it too.
Ahh I love this!! I love your nails too! So cute!!
i so deeply admire the way you power through difficult artistic motivation phases and still make the most original and stunning art ive seen in modern day.
I love watching your videos, but your voice is so soothing I always end up falling asleep while watching 😂
Love it! And, like always, I’m late, no surprise there!!
I really like all the outfits you sketched. Especially the 2nd one.
thank you!!! me too!
It’s just so satisfying when rin paints :]
You struggled but still managed to make something amazing! Thank you for sticking through and sharing this with us. ☺️
This is so cool!
Your art was like, so neat. How professional!
Ive been checking UA-cam all day to see if you've posted yet, and when i saw your video on my home page i felt like it was bday. Soooo cool!
This is really inspiring because art block like that is sooooo disheartening
But when you started to sketch that big, scrunched up cute face I got streets emotional??!
I don't think I've ever been this early. So excited to watch, been struggling with art block myself lately.
Haha the first attempt ended up looking like a yearbook picture for clown college. 😂
You, even on your worse days have a talent I am in awe of.
Thank you ❤️🎨
I got so many Circus Baby vibes from this. 🤩
This would be the cutest print dude! Omg it’s so cute and really dope at the same time lol
I just love art block :(. I just now am getting through mine. I love the art. Keep up the good work!!
