Dowel Bar Baskets in Slipform Paving

Dowel bars are critical in concrete roads because they lock slabs together at joints, ensuring smooth ride quality while allowing expansion and contraction during seasonal temperature changes. Baskets of dowel bars are placed directly in front of concrete slipform pavers, and the road is paved over them. Joints are then saw-cut over the basket once the concrete roadway has cured.

What are those short green bars placed there for?
If they were structural they would be longer and interconnected, or at least connected to something more than those skinny wires, and the placement is more like how you would place a sensor.

They’re probably coated with something like epoxy to form a longitudinal joint. The dowel bars are meant to connect two separate slabs of concrete so if one raises, so will the slab next to it, preventing a tripping hazard or a big bump for cars

What is the best way a construction joint can be incorporated into this if you can’t pour everything in one go? Would you need to build a form around the dowels?

Dowel bar baskets lock two slabs of road together. There is a designed joint right down the middle of the basket and without something to lock them together, it could create quite a bump for vehicles if the slabs settle differently.
