Joe, you’re creating a false dichotomy between dividends and share buybacks. From a total return perspective, they’re two sides of the same coin, period. You’re using market sentiment as an advantage for dividends, but in what way exactly is that the case? A consistent dividend policy *can* indicate stability, but sometimes it’s a double-edged sword, as these companies fear shareholder backlash so much that they end up bleeding cash the company desperately needs to reinvest in the business. And to be clear, I’m not trying to convince you that buybacks are better. The whole debate is moot. It’s about cash flow, business health, and total return. You’re citing performance through certain market conditions as an argument for income stability, but the simple fact is you could just as easily sell the equivalent dollar amount in stock. And your opportunities to maximize time value are far greater this way. Don’t get me wrong. Dividends are great. They allow you to reallocate returned cash as you see fit, which is a nice advantage. But that advantage isn’t in opposition to the advantages provided by share buybacks. The comparisons are nonsensical. It’s returned capital either way.

Joesph what is your opinion on the tax inefficiency when it comes to dividend investing? I'm referring to the double taxation when the money is taxed at the corporate level and then when it's taxed when it's payed out as a dividend.
Hey Joseph and everybody. Quick question here, When it comes to dividend investing is this okay to do in a taxed brokerage account? or is this type of investing better suited for an IRA? What type of account is this?
Hey Simple Civilian. Yes it is OK to do dividend investing in a taxed brokerage account. What you have to be aware of is Qualified vs Non-Qualified dividends. Basically Qualified dividends are taxed at a lower rate. To learn more just look for UA-cam videos on the subject. I'm sure there are many. Hope this helps.
You're missing the point about dividends vs buy backs. Dividend being consistent is both a feature and the bug. A company not reducing or eliminating their dividend during tough times could have a long term impact on future fundamentals. The capital saved could be used to fortify balance sheets, acquire on the cheap, R&D, or increase loyal shareholder's equity by buying back shares. The statistics that illustrate that companies are bad at timing buybacks is not true. It's not true because it's short term thinking. You can find a whole list of companies that bought a ton of shares in 06 & 07 and then didn't in the troughs of 08 & 09. I bet you that most of those companies wish they could buy more shares at that 07 peak if they could. Those shares look really cheap now for a lot of companies. This is true of all "bad times", eventually. The fact companies turn those buy backs on and off dynamically is the feature. If you owned a company with shareholders in mind, wouldn't you want to batten down the hatches, so to speak, if there was economy uncertainty? The dividend locks you in because shareholders demand it. I'm not anti dividend companies or anything, I love the dividend that I receive. We don't have to kid ourselves though. A dividend vs the same capital being used for buy backs makes for a less nimble company. Add in the tax element and it's really a non starter. For the dividend zealots. I'm speaking theoretically here. Don't send me anecdotes on why dividends are better.

Coal has record prices right now at about $ 425.00 per ton, and it's average over the years is $ 50.00 to $ 60.00 per ton. With natural gas prices soaring in Europe, and Russia cutting off natural gas to western Europe, like Germany, these countries have turned to coal as a fuel source, to fuel their energy producing plants, as it's cheaper than natural gas, and I expect this trend to continue for at least 12 - 16 months. I would love-love-love if you did a video with the analysis of dividend stocks during periods of gradual and sharp increases in interest rates. In this video, you mentioned dividend stocks doing well in periods where rates go up. But if a dividend stock is yielding 2% in dividends and rates increase from 1% to 5%, dividend stock prices should decrease so their 2% yield increases toward the new 5% bond rate. Anyway, love it if you would do a video focusing on the historic actual impact on dividend stock prices and yields when rates increase significantly. Thanks!

Still waiting for that Hewlett-Packard buy video 😆
Excellent report on an excellent consumer staple. Buy @ 80 or lower and take a nap for the rest of your life...or just go about your business.....lol
Church & Dwight looks good, would you sell an under performer (Disney, Netflix, etc...) to buy?
Disney is one that I will likely give to around the end of 2022 and see how it develops.
@John Gallagher yes mix politics into your investment decisions is a perfect strategy! See how all the hedge funds and good investors use it? Imagine Buffet being: ah this one is too far left, this one is too far right to invest into… seriously
C & W is on 95x OCF which is very expensive.
Great video as always Joseph! I'd be interested to get your thoughts on investing in small caps and microcaps that are often ignored by analysts. Also, what do you think about diversifying into companies outside the US?
How does this compare to Unilever? They’ve been beat pretty bad lately.
They need to bring turkey clubs back to costco!!!
Service Corporation international is another one that will blow your mind.
Joseph, in addition to qualtrim, can you show what other resources you use to collect info on a company before investing? PS. Greatest stock investement channel on youtube
I own Church and Dwight, Cintas, and AOSmith for this same long term, high dividend CAGR

I want to start a position of costco stock at 440.
Joseph, I've heard many "gurus" talk about how tax inefficient dividends are on a brokerage account, but are they really? What say you?
You should really look at Waste Management. Since you like owning trash stocks. Just kidding, WM has outperformed the market Y/Y and deserves more eyeballs.
A great company that is overpriced is not a good investment. This stock is overpriced. Cut it in half or double their earnings and I would consider it. Just not for me.
17% compound growth is impressive....but it's still garbage compared to CNSWF (constellation software) 34% compound growth. I don't own the stock though.
They have raised Hot Dog and Soda price, just not in the states. Here in Mexico, it's gone up by 5 pesos every couple years since like 2010.
So how many pesos is the hot dog combo?
@@fuckthisksksjjksdfjd I think right now is 35 pesos and today $ USD MXN is 20.8, so is like 1.6$... and in 2010 the peso vs dólar was like 12 so is normal to increase the price!
@@bhgm3688 It's 60 pesos here, wish it was 35.
@@BetterYouNow oh :(
Morning star rates Dwight and Church as significantly overvalued.
Starbucks is a good example why buybacks aren't reliable.
Really need to know what your principal investment is. I am a cash investor but have to know exactly how much you put in for this to be a viable investment strategy. Did you put in 300k and are now getting 1,200/month in cash flow?
Thank you for the content!
If you do see this and read it, would it be possible to get your analysis on Honda??
I’m terrible at analytics, but I’ve noticed that, when talking about automotive companies, Honda seems to be one of the most consistent automakers that have “boring” but very reliable and cheap automobiles. I feel as though this company will outlast many other automakers. Would love to hear your opinion thought. Thank you.
