I started out with a 24-70 F2.8 and it was too heavy. So I switched to dueling primes, a 35mm and a 85mm both F1.8 so I can shoot in really dark places like subways which is something I do a lot. And I love this setup, its fast to switch and its only 2 lenses. But sometimes I just want to go wider. But F4 is too dark and lacks good DOF, so the 20-40 Tamron fits perfectly replace my 35mm. I can still shoot 35mm all I want but when I want to go wider, its so easy. 40mm on the upper range is pretty close to 50mm which is nice. I will never need any focal length between 40 and my 85 so it works perfectly.

I rarely need the 20-40 but it pairs nicely with the 35-150 so that is what I bought. My starting point was the 35-150 and I often need f/2.8, so the Tamron works for me. Great to have all of these options, and I may get more Sony lenses if I pass the Tamrons off to my nephew some day. Until then, I'm happy.

F2.8 is a big deal. For more boke and better low light. Actually the main reason I use mirrorless camera instead of phone is because of bokeh and better low light so Why should I spend on a F4 lens. I think the best option is 24_70 Gmii but it's pretty expensive and also sigma 24_70 which is pretty big and heavy. hard choice

I've always had this thought that it isn't 100% fair to compare focus performance of a f2.8 lens to an f4 lens because the depth of field is more shallow. Just a thought. Maybe it would work just as well at f4?

I'm just watching ,Chris because I already have bought the Tamron. Nice to see that I am not missing out on IQ according to your tests. The Tamron is perfect for my need to have a small, light, fast lens that makes a perfect companion for Tamron's 28-200 on the a7C for travelling and uses the same 67mm filters. Btw , Tamron lenses may seem plain but they are built like a tank and look as good as new years later. I have already used the USB port on the Tamron 20-40 f2.8 to do some customization; it's a great feature. Curiously, I have never used an AF/MF switch on any of my Sony lenses because I have that feature programmed to the center button on all my camera bodies for consistency and ease of use. The price difference in Canada is substantial between these lenses which ,of course is another deciding factor.. There is quite a difference in the sizes of these two lenses which was also a determinant for me. Good video!

Variable aperture glass solves the size/cost/weight equation. They just need to make the lower end f2.8 (or lower) instead of f3.5 or f4. I'd actually like one that was faster on the long end for smaller DOF (if that is even possible.) Nikon made the 16-80DXVR which was a stellar all-around lens, other than being prone to "inhaling" dust.

I would argue that when you need f2.8, f1.2 would be that much better. I've been shooting APS-C for over 10 years with f2.8 lenses, and F4 on full-frame cameras is better, so there is some truth to what you're mentioning. However, we need more affordable 1.x lenses with the camera's brand. I really like the 15f1.4G, but they haven't released a camera for it. Unfortunately this is also the weakest range for the Sony

I'm just watching... So you're welcome haha but honestly, leaning more towards the Tampon, but only because I already have the 28-75 and the 20-40 just seems like a nice little travel lens for vlogging

That’ll slide nicely in with the other tamrons 😉

I tested this with samyang 18mm and the active stab made a visible improvement over standard stab.

Seems you don't see the dimensionality of one lens over the other? it is pretty obvious, the one on the left has a better dimensionality.

    “20mm - 70mm is more useful.” Very insightful. .

considering that in europe the sony is literally double the price, the tamron is looking pretty strong.

I’d keep my 20-40 over the Sony any day of the week.

6:10 looks like the Sony has a bit of lower light transmission and that is why it looks as if it has a bit of more contrast.

7:12 that is not vignette there is just no more lens on the Sony lol

I got the Tamron 20-40mm and to be honest that is the perfect gimbal lens imo. I'm using it with DJI RS3 and it doesn't matter for the balance if you zoom in and out it's always balanced. I might even sell my GM 35mm because I did a test and side by side there is really no difference at all. There is no possible to say that one is EUR-1,600 and the other EUR-800. In terms of sharpness side by side the GM wins by a slight margin and the GM is a prime top of the line lol

I was really confused about who the Tammy was for, but then I did a couple of video shoots and went “aha!” Now I too own one of the Tamron’s specifically for gimbal use.

@@angelamaloney4871 Yeah and for gimbals dials and buttons on the lens isn't really that important IMO. Now I attached the focus motor of the RS3 to the Tamron 20-40mm and it works great. Even though it is not "parfocal" I would I argue that this doesn't matter at all 98% of the time.

8:18 I'm sorry but the f2,8 aperture is more important than 70mm on the long end of the Sony. You can get that 70mm no problem with a relatively small crop. I'm pretty sure that if you really need tele than you just get a tele and you don't care about the long end.
