One of the better reviews I have seen for this lens. Good work! For me, this is a very interesting lens. I like shooting wide but not ridiculously wide, and going up to 40 makes it much more versatile than traditional wide-angle zooms. I really like it when companies think outside of the box and don't only produce the same lens over and over again.
Thank you so much Johans, that truly means a lot. I was thinking the same thing when it came out! It was a strange and different take on what we view as wides but I was curious to see it in the real world. The lightness of it makes me really like it. My 14-24mm is great but it’s significantly heavier than this. Thank you for watching 🙏
‘Environmental portraits” - Spot on! This will be my next lens purchase, replacing my Tamron 17-28. Plenty wide enough for the occasional tradeshow booth shots, but mainly as an almost ideal reception/dance floor lens. On the dance floor, the 17-28 is wider than I need, and I often want to zoom in a bit tighter as well. Recently, I have been juggling the 17-28 and a 35 prime. This lens will eliminate that disruption in my coverage. I will be able to work with just one camera on the dance floor, which is a big help in very crowded conditions. Glad to hear it has been working well for you in this kind of use. Your review, along with Dustin Abbott’s, has convinced me this is going to be a great lens for my event work. I will ditch the 17-28 and hang onto my 14 and 18 primes just in case. FWIW, I enjoy your low-key presentation style and practical thinking.
Thank you so much! I truly appreciate you watching and commenting 🙏 I would have to say, however, I might suggest keeping the 17 to 28. I actually just got that one in the mail from Tamron to test out (taking it on todays wedding) but generally speaking I prefer a nice wide angle just in case I need that width during dance floor photos if someone does something ridiculous close to the camera or for our wide environmental portraits. However I’ll compare weight too cause that’s a big factor that I like about the 20-40. On the 17-28 also, I do have my camera set so I just hit one button and it’ll go into crop mode if I need a little extra reach which works well if you don’t want that distortion. Even on my camera at 24mp it’s cropped to 11ish which is plenty (no one is making posters out of a dance floor photo lol). I wanted to respond to point out some of those things before you jump ship or you see me post the video next week and go “man I listened to Elmer and got the 20-40 and now he’s raving about the 17-28” 😂
@@TNKPhoto Thanks. No worries. I have the 17-28 and know its strengths and weaknesses and often use Crop Mode with it on my a7RV. I rarely need wider than 20, and I have the UWA primes in case that happens, e.g. for venue shots. I just feel like the 20-40 will fit dance floor use better and also make a better walkabout combo with the Tamron 50-300 I plan to get to replace my Tamron 70-300. It's also a better FL range for large group portraits.
That’s awesome! Those speciality lenses are so cool. I don’t have any long lenses like that but I’m sure it’s beautiful 👌 And yeah the lightness on this one is on point right?
Your logic on the focal length is right on. I feel the same.....I can use the 70-200 if I need any reach....Also Environmental Portraits is a great term. Im taking it to London and France and want to get a lot of video and shots of my wife with the massive buildings we will visit. I also do parties and events on the waterfront and at college parties were a 4some turns into a photo of 12 people in like 20 seconds. My next live music shoot from the pit will feature this lens as an experiment. So It is a tool that fits what I do otherwise I would never buy this. I deferred the 24-70gm2 purchase owning this. ( I have CanonL2470 with a mc11 and Tamron 28-200 crowding that space anyway) Thanks for the review.
Speaking facts right here. So much better than a kit lens but not terribly overpriced where (when you start) feels like a ton of money. Thank you for watching Frank
Hey guys, thank you for watching. I haven't used it for architecture since it's not my arena, but I can imagine it being great because it's very wide but doesn't distort as much as an ultra wide. If you need a little wider too, Tamron has the 17-28 tamron-usa.com/product/lenses/a046.html
I would say for buildings 20mm is plenty wide and probably works better because there’s less distortion than a 14 or 16 for example. I do still use my 14-24 quite a bit because of muscle memory (I’ve been using that range since the Nikon days) but the 20-40 still comes with me for a lot of my shoots and is significantly lighter. For vlogging too, it’s way better on the arm (although I’ve been playing with the osmo pocket 3 for that…). Thank you for watching 🙏
Hopefully I can help. They’ll both do you well, however if you’re doing video on cameras that crop in when you shoot at different settings, the wider may be a better option because of that (I’m not a videographer so this is with my limited knowledge on that). Regardless, content is king so get the one that you’ll put to work 😎😎
I just saw your post. I shoot stills and almost no video. I have the 17-28 and love it. I also have the 28-75 G2 but hardly ever use it. For a one lens walk around solution, the 20-40 is a much more useful range. I had a chance to shoot the new 17-50 for a few days and love it a lot. The 17-50 is an f4 lens. That is the only thing going against it. Now you have three lenses to choose from!! Having shot all three, I would probably sell my 17-28 and get the 20-40. It is basically an f2.8 normal lens that gives you much wider view and as the reviewer mentioned it can go to 60mm in crop mode and give you a nice short f2.8 tele for portrait work.
Thank you so much for watching Ron 🙏🙏 Lemme know if there are any topics you’d like for me to touch on. I have a few I’m gonna film and post this month but always happy to give value to those that support us
Thank you! I’ll think of a few topics and will be posting them in the coming weeks. I also have a video coming with some new MagMod gear that they gave us to test out ahead of release. I think you’re really gonna like it 🙌
Thank you for the feedback Jack. I actually made some adjustments on our newest videos. If you wanna check em out and lemme know your thoughts. I hope you got something out of the video besides that 😁
Thank you. It’s using off camera lighting to achieve that look. Underexposing the background and then hitting it he subject with flash. We posted several videos about that
A real review. Im into wildlife. Cheers to Tamron. So smart. I just got the 20-40 to pair with a 50-400 on an a7cr. Love the combo.
Thank you so much for watching! That's a great combo too 😎

I just picked up this lens, I shoot wildlife mostly with my 600 F4, 90% of my other photos are covered by this little gem

That shot of Scott is EPIC! I need a shot like that of me with running gear ⚡️
Dude, let’s do it! Next week I actually have a little time “off”. Let’s plan something for real

You're very welcome! It sounds like you have a great grasp as to what tools you need for the job! I'm happy our video could help!
Great review!
Thank you so much Will!
I think this lens should be the first f/2.8 zoom for many beginners.

How is it for real estate/architecture/interior photography?

is 20mm wide enough ? for buildings? do you miss anything compared to something like a 16 mm on the wide end? thx
