My Grandmother, Jessie, was one of the original Lindy Hoppers at the Savoy Ballroom in Harlem in the late 20s and 30s. I knew her as an old lady, and it's hard for me to believe that she actually did this jitterbug dancing in her youth. Here's to all those beautiful Grandmas and gallant Grandpas. Love you madly!
@@Jay-Kay-Buwembo Tell me about it! I just came across my college I.D. from 50 years ago. I went and looked in the mirror, but all I could see was my Great Grandfather's face looking back at me!
Dancing professionally seems so much more enjoyable in this time period. The movement is so much more loose and lively, unlike today, when everyone is trying to be as sharp and robotic as possible, throwing feeling and authenticity to the wayside.
Alice had no children, so she could not have been your grandma. That's not a skin infection. Alice more than likely had a liver ailment. Thus, the liver medication caused some medically induced vitiligo.
I love the nicknames they used to give musicians and athletes back then. "Hot Lips" Fuller and "Rubber Arms" Marshall were performing in this video, and some of the most famous Negro Leagues ballplayers were "Cool Papa" Bell, "Jelly Roll" Gardner, and "Steel Arm" Johnny Taylor.
Fantastic dancing. Brilliant choreography with a real sense of humour. If it was now. They would have been on America's Got Talent!!! & they would have won. Beautiful.
Oh, indeed. This was normal tempo for jazz musicians back in the days before Bebop and cool jazz took over. Also The African-Amarican dancers wanted the tempo at a certain speed, as this felt natural for them. I could give you much more story, perhaps another time.
@@killerdillr Not necessarily true. I'd consider this to be too fast for a 'normal' dance tempo (listen to Basie's "Woodside", "One O'Clock Jump", Goodman's "Don't Be That Way", and even Shaw's "Traffic Jam" for a 'more normal' speed) and there are both bebop and cool jazz tunes both slower and faster than this if you're implying either. I always considered the track to be more of a showpiece for Roy Eldridge with dancing as more of an afterthought at this speed (funnily enough the label still calls it a 'fox-trot').
@@imyou9011 how he dares to compare Rihanna to her! this lady was true talent when technology was not available to everyone, these days it's easier for black people to become famous and successful compared to before when it was very difficult, thank god times have changed, and now so many people have a lot more opportunities.

Bitter sweet seeing old folks in the full vitality and exuberance of their youth! It's beautiful though!

You can kinda see our African ancestry in the movement. I love my people and my black American culture ✊🏾
Our ancestry dates to Israel. We are not African. That's where they fled to from romans.

Their energy was on another level. When your grandparents were way cooler than you'll ever be.
They would be considered Great or even Great Great grandparents now. This was my grandmothers generation and I am a grandmother myself.

Damn, how tall was that dude dressed as a lady,at least 7 Feet?! That last dancer looks like comedian /dancer Bill Bellamy!
She was beautiful inside & out. When dancers & entertainers had class. Today everything so trashy. May Alice be dancing with the angels.
