Great topic. I am a Haole from NJ. Moved to Hawaii in 1980 and due to my mom becoming sick, moved back to NJ in 1993. Most people I worked with on Maui when I left, thought I was local. I love the people and culture of Hawaii. Best thing I ever did, moving there. I never would have left if not for my Mom, but don't regret leaving. I would not buy a local Haole tee shirt, because I wasn't born there. Your Common Opiniontary just confirmed my thinking. Mahalo. Still laughed, even though was serious kine topic. Mele Kalikikmaka!!

I was born in Kula, Maui and lived in Hawaii until my 50's. When I worked at the post office and said "Howzzit!" to someone and they commented on how local I sounded, the other workers would tell, "Of course. She local!" And I didn't go to Punahou which is the other assumption. I miss home and the sounds of the languages around me, but I will always carry it in my heart.

Andy, I have felt "neither here nor there" most of my life. I lived in Hawai'i from the age of 8 to 18, so I did grow up there. But I was never sure I belonged, even though I did in my heart. And on the Mainland, I have a part of me, the Hawai'i part, that will always be foreign, that only other local people can understand.
Growing up, I didn't speak pidgin because I felt like, as a haole, I didn't deserve to, but I heard it in my head and I spoke it in my head. Your videos are bringing that back and I talk it to myself all the time now!
After college, I stayed on the Mainland, but Hawai'i will always be in my soul and will always be home. Also, you're right about people who didn't grow up there, but who just "get it". I work with a guy like that. He has visited the Islands a lot and sometimes I think he's more "local" than a lot of haoles who live there. He has natural Aloha Spirit and he loves the culture. He sits and listens to local radio at work over the Internet!
I have ordered a Local Haole shirt and will wear it with pride and love.

I often refer to most people born and raised in Hawaii as "local", Regardless of race or ethnicity. I no think matter. I think the key distinction, appropriately enough here, is their understanding, knowledge, and use of pidgin. After all it's the language of the land. Great point and common opiniontary Bradda Andy

Great Opiniontary, Hawaii is about the only place everyone is a minority. Growing up there was an education on getting along with everybody. I learned quick as I landed in Kalihi and went to Dole Intermediate my first week in the islands. The melting pot is needed for us to live happily together. Too many people come from other countries and religions and not want to remain separate and not join the melting pot. Thanks for the perspective.

Wow, perfect example of what it means to grow up in Hawaii! I grew up on the Big Island in the 70s and back then we didn't care about the color of our skin or hair and didn't even give a second thought about what race anyone was. We were just a bunch of kids growing up in Kona. One of my best friends was a local haole, Terry Crozier, who was the nicest guy in the world, but is no longer with us. When I moved to the mainland after graduating from college, it was very sad to see how hung up people are on things like race and the resistance to embrace differences in culture.

But lived for awhile in Honolulu and loved listening to my colleagues and friends slip into their pidgin conversations (they're bilingual!). So listening to your show brings me back to Honolulu time. Dear Andy,
My heart is crying to what you are saying. My family moved too Hawai'i when I was four years old. I got to know the Philippinos that worked my grandfather's macadamia nut farm. I got to know the locals of every race 'flavor' (mostly off Asian or Hawai'ian decent). Mind you I sported a nice tan the whole time I lived in Hawai'i, however, I'm haole of Irish/ German decent. Kindergarten and grade school were the worst. My brother and I were picked on mercilessly not just by our fellow students but by the teachers as well! If it weren't for our mother watching very carefully regarding our education we would have started several grades lower when we moved back to the mainland.
When we did move to the mainland all my memories of growing up were in Hawai'i. I felt nervous because I wondered where all the tan people go? Brother and I spoke fluent pidgon English and once again found ourselves hated and picked on BY our 'fellow' haoles!
Regardless of how we were treated I, for one, am a wahini! A haole wahini. But wahini nonetheless. I completely embraced ohana and all its culture. I would like to come visit someday if not move back. Not all my time in Hawai'i was torture.
    Mahalo,
    Rock

Rocks Corner Kids that be cruel. I am hapa-Haole but I didn’t grow up here and look neither white or asian, I am like generic for Hawaii so I fit in good, especially if I tan more!!! But my fiancé grew up in Hawaii and we not treated right in grade school. But was it because it’s Hawaii? Or because it was kids? I don’t know. Sorry to hear you had a hard time. Hope you come back!

ya know Andy Bumatai , Das right we do have a different Cultural. I am Irish Filipino . And you being German ,Filipino. We all talk the way we all want to talk and the complexity of it al is just that. And when us locals do see one another its always howzit brah ! But when we want to speak english in front of the hoales we can do that to. For me ive got lots of family up in the Mainland and when they frist heard me talk they just simply couldnt understand i guess i was talking to fast for them and i needed to slow down as they said. And i did just for them to understand me then after a while they caught on in the way i talked . the one thing that disgusts me is when other people give me the look like they better than me. And so i throw a big smile at them just to get on their nerves and i do it lots . But if they knew me they would think differently as far as turning up there nose . I just tell then yeps the sun is bright...... mahalo for this daily pidgen brah Aloha from the local boy from Y-Pahu

Here Papa'a = Haole. There is a distinct division of the society. Most business owner whites, Papa'as, don't mix with the Cook Islanders. All my friends are Maori. I deal with the Mama's and Papas, Aunties and Uncles to you, everyday. I have to in my business and they are for the most part really sweet people. Of course I have experienced some racism, there is an underlying distrust of white people by the Maori. There are also stereotypes perpetuated by the whites about the locals, they are lazy, dirty, thieving, etc. But that is to be expected in a place that is 95% pure bred local. I have found that if you are open and honest and be yourself you can get along with most people regardless of skin color.
