@@Lauren-vd4qe I’ve been riding all my life. I’ve had the horses for 5+ years now, and ironically, ride less often as a horse owner than I did without them! I habitually only ride my paint horse because he is gaited, which is VERY comfortable, and he loves being ridden. My mustang (rescued from a kill pen) is a sweet beautiful girl who would probably benefit from being ridden on a regular basis, but she is a drama queen, and a bit nuts.

It annoys me too when someone says a horse is stupid. I think they are intelligent. They are just like other animals, if a human wants to have one or interact with them, take the time to learn their behavior and what their body language means. The correct way to handle and train them. It truly isn't hard. And for those that do this, their horse friend will give 100% to whatever you ask of them.

I suspect a friendly look into their eyes is welcome but an intense stare could be, as you mentioned threatening or at the very least awkward. In our interactions with people, we tend not to stare intensely and I feel that the same would be true with our horses. (It certainly is not a great idea to do it with dogs as they find it a threat or challenge but I feel there is a different layer with horses). What has your experience been like?

This is really funny and true, we have a horse (we meaning my dad and I) Anyways, anyone who works with her, she is an Angel sent from heaven, to my dad, mostly an Angel. To me, oh boy, she is a sassy queen, never misses the opportunity to when we are turning on the fly, she will pick up to a gallop and test my trick riding skills ❤️ She is so sweet, I feel super bad when I can’t see her for two weeks when school piles up, but she never is mad or upset that I COULD have seen her, she is happy that I AM seeing her ❤️ Love you baby girl ❤️
Even with my little experience of horses just cleaning out their stalls I find them more comparable to dogs than farm animals as far as intelligence and personality

I must admit l have always admired horses and in my younger days l lived in North Wales in the UK, I would often walk past a field which held horses who l would give apples to, as you rightly say they are not stupid as soon as they saw me on any over occasion after that they would immediately come running over to me l guess in the hope of further treats.
When my fleabit mare Scarlett had sore front hooves after a trimming session she stood in a pile of eucalyptus leaves. As I watched, she reached out with her front legs to pull more leaves into the pile to stand on. She had an idea on how to improve her comfort, and made it happen!

I used to take riding lessons when I was younger and I always talked to the horses when I rode them. One of them would nod in agreement when I asked him something and would always listen to what I said. One particular thoroughbred was my pal and when I called his name he walked right up to the stall door and greeted me. He knew we were buddies because I was the only one who knew how to ride him . He often got anxious when cantering around the ring and when that happened I would have him canter in quarter circles until he slowed down and didn’t break into a gallop on me. He would do that even with the instructor and she asked me how was I able to control him. Indeed these animals are very smart because they know who to trust and who not to trust.

Actually we had dinner the other evening at a great place called Andiamo (in Summer Hill) & the food was very good. I have been to USA several times but never to Los Angeles. The distance from Australia to the States is very long as you know but to me worth the travel. I've always had a great time in USA & found Americans to be friendly & helpful. Best wishes

Thank you for this. I recently changed to a different instructor and I'm not sure if I want to go back because one of the first things he did was tell me horses are stupid... Then he said it again about another four times. It made me furious on the inside but I hadn't had a ride out in so long that I just let him say it. He made it sound like they were nothing and he was superior. I couldn't understand how someone who thinks they are stupid could have so many horses and a stable and land.
This is only my opinion of course, but I think if you can find somewhere else to ride you will find it more fulfilling. It's possible he is just trying to be funny in which case you just have to decide how much of that humour you can tolerate. But generally speaking, I think starting with someone that has a deep respect for horses will make the experience better for you. Best of luck and thanks. Pat

I was waiting for him to say he was only joking or something because I just couldn't understand how he could be around them all the time and have cold heartless view. I think they are the most marvelous creatures and I'm so angry that people like that can have them when I would treasure one as my companion. We are moving soon and hopefully I will make my dream come true so I don't have to keep paying for the experience but I have stopped going to this stable.

I'm sure this Video changed my life a lot. I'm right now so grateful to learn English I'm school so o can understand this Video. I think equestrians often fortet that horses see different than the human. And the fact that they go where we tell them to go is just...I'm mean wow.
I love horses. I think they are the most majestic animals. The problem is, I'm afraid of them. What is worse is they know it. I would love to learn to ride one.
Honestly, Kelly, the only reason to be afraid of horses is if you aren't given the chance to understand them. They are so gentle and generous and would never hurt us on purpose, but their size requires that we learn how to stay safe around them. Once you learn those things I think you will find that you can fulfill your dreams. Just make sure you start with horses that have an even quiet temperament. Practice with those types so that if you make a mistake, it won't be a big deal. Most people who end up being frightened by horses have been put in a situation of dealing with a more sensitive, perhaps younger animal. That requires a bit of practice. Stay tuned because we are putting the finishing touches on a course for complete beginners who want to learn about horses. (We've been asked to make it especially for people who want to volunteer at a farm or a rescue). While there will be a charge for the actual course, we'll be doing a free introductory version before that. A lot of people have found our free stuff to be very helpful. Thanks for the video, I am volunteering at a stable and might be working with them full-time soon so it is enlightening to be aware of how they see things. Some of them get irritated by other horses next to them which is very odd to me. But oh well.
If they are irritated by the horse next to them it may be a personality conflict. They don't all get along because they are horses, just like we don't all get along because we're people. As their caretakers its also good to keep in mind- we don't always get along with every horse and they don't get along with every person. Moving one horse to a different stall can change the whole dynamics and atmosphere in the barn.

Very good information! I was unaware that a horse has a third eye lid like my Boxer. Something that not every dog breed has. I was taught when riding in the woods to make sure to move any branches out of the way because my horse would run into them. I assumed it was because she was blind in one eye. Not realizing how they see. ❤😊👍

Don't own but am a groomer, hopefully one day I will own my own horse . Am taking Western riding lessons as well. I am DEEPLY interested in how horses see! Since I groom some big mares in a Cross Tie with a stall like a shower, with a drain, there are some days they just don't like the Cross Ties, some days, they just don't like the noise the farrier makes, or the tree trimmer makes. I always want to see what they see and why they don't like something that particular day. One thing is in Arizona being a groomer and wanting to beat the heat takes away from their grazing time and they want to be with the herd. However Ive established a bond with these mares they are retired when it comes to riding and I always try to see how they see. This was a great video and I like what you said at the end, horses are not dumb its how they see. Every thing they do is based on how they see and Ill see people forget that . It would be neat if some one could make goggles with horse vision so we could see thru them.

Anyone who says horses are stupid are usually the same people who believe horses must be bullied into submission. Horses can accurately read more human expressions than dogs AND chimpanzees. They will reflect your own energy back to you; anxiety, fear, anger, trust, love, etc. As prey animals, even when they seem oblivious, they are hyper vigilant and always observing and reading their surroundings, and you. They are curious, playful, clever, and funny. If your horse is being difficult, ‘stubborn’ or uncooperative, YOU are the problem. They are incredibly forgiving of our blunders and miscommunications. (Mine sure are!). Even horses who have suffered terrible abuse/neglect can overcome fear/aggression. With lots of patience, and consistent, kind leadership, they will learn to trust and respect you. Their willingness to do this always amazes me. When they understand that they are safe with you, they will do anything for you. When I’m having a bad day, or upset about something, I go outside and sit on the grass to watch them graze, and just be with them. As I’m pondering my woes, one of my horses (a natural born clown) will usually do something outrageously silly, and make me laugh. Then I feel the warm breath of the other, nibbling my hair, gently resting her lips on top of my head, and I know I am truly blessed. Nothing on Earth compares to that. 🥰
I will call my horse stupid when they are being silly , not really meaning it. But then someone says yeah they are stupid I am like I was joking horses are really really smart.
Why are all these horses wearing halters? Are the owners too tired to take them off or are these horses hard to catch? Either way, a horse can get something caught on the halter and bad things can happen.
Thanks for your comment and I appreciate your concern. When lessons are ongoing, the young people who work here go out to get the horses for the students. We have found it to be the safest way for them. However, I absolutely understand your concern. We check on them regularly throughout the day and they all come in overnight.
Horses, cows, goats etc are not stupid. Pigs even are intelligent. This was very interesting. As a young girl I did a lot of horse back riding, but because it was both expensive and I had to travel for education (I`m from Denmark) it fell away as a priority. But I always wonder, that bacause of the blind spots, why did`nt the horese develop an extra eye? I guess it`s because of how brains function, but imagine horses with an extra eye in the forehead, I´m laughing so hard right now. It would be a problem to put on a bridle 😂
Agree horses are intelligent creatures, there for it is cruel to lock them up in stalls for hours on end as like us they become incredibly bored, it's why they start chewing doors like in this stable
Hello Polly. Thank you for your concern about my horses. In actual fact, my horses are turned out every day, 365 days a year. They come in at night. My barn is very old and has had many horses living in it, long before I moved in 28 years ago. The chewing of the wood occurred long before we moved in. While I agree about the boredom of horses, it was not my horses that chewed the doors. Best regards, Pat
My boy blind in 1 eye so i am very mindfull of where i am and everyone else is. I refused to ride in heavy rain and alot of wind as i feel it is unfair to ask this of him. He no bother in rain or high wind but i still won't
I believe it is highly doubtful that horses recognise other animals as predators. Everything in their behaviour suggests they don't. But what they do recognise is predatory behaviour. A horse can distinguish between a predatory that is stalking for a kill or a predator that is wandering harmlessly among them. They see the intent, not the position of the eyes. That's why you'll see horses chase dogs (a predatory) out of their paddock and why horses will run from kangaroos (a prey species).

Great video, very considerate to horse's, I agree horse's are visually impaired, I believe they have a blank disc, right in the middle of their vision, so they have to overcome the problem by either tilting their head to one side to see out of the edge of one eye and then memorize that image, or they work out what is in front of them with imagination, if they are running to fast to tilt their head,,,there is a proof of this at the grand national stadium when it was first built and they took a horse around the race track for a test run, it fell and broke it's legs, no one could figure out why?... It suddenly tried to jump when there was no fence?... I believe it imagined there was a fence there in the blank spot because there was a extra fence on the side of the race track fence running perpendicular to it, i.e. the horse assumed that the fence continued on across the race track and tried to jump it. There was of course no fence there and the horse fell. If horse's only have peripheral vision with a blank spot in the middle, then maybe changes could be made in shows with jumping with a solution being very wide jumping fences for horse safety? Also horse's might need glasses to help remove the blank spot in the middle of their vision? Or glass mirrors in their horse blinkers to straighten up and align the two images going to their eyes, their brain should be capable of doing the rest, i.e. composing the two images to make a proper 3d image of what is in front of them. .. if horse's imagine then they might dream?

I must admit l have always admired horses and in my younger days l lived in North Wales in the UK, I would often walk past a field which held horses who l would give apples to, as you rightly say they are not stupid as soon as they saw me on any over occasion after that they would immediately come running over to me l guess in the hope of further treats.

When my fleabit mare Scarlett had sore front hooves after a trimming session she stood in a pile of eucalyptus leaves. As I watched, she reached out with her front legs to pull more leaves into the pile to stand on. She had an idea on how to improve her comfort, and made it happen!

I used to take riding lessons when I was younger and I always talked to the horses when I rode them. One of them would nod in agreement when I asked him something and would always listen to what I said. One particular thoroughbred was my pal and when I called his name he walked right up to the stall door and greeted me. He knew we were buddies because I was the only one who knew how to ride him . He often got anxious when cantering around the ring and when that happened I would have him canter in quarter circles until he slowed down and didn’t break into a gallop on me. He would do that even with the instructor and she asked me how was I able to control him. Indeed these animals are very smart because they know who to trust and who not to trust.
if the instructor has to ask you how do you control that horse then she isnt much of an instructor.

Actually we had dinner the other evening at a great place called Andiamo (in Summer Hill) & the food was very good. I have been to USA several times but never to Los Angeles. The distance from Australia to the States is very long as you know but to me worth the travel. I've always had a great time in USA & found Americans to be friendly & helpful. Best wishes

Thank you for this. I recently changed to a different instructor and I'm not sure if I want to go back because one of the first things he did was tell me horses are stupid... Then he said it again about another four times. It made me furious on the inside but I hadn't had a ride out in so long that I just let him say it. He made it sound like they were nothing and he was superior. I couldn't understand how someone who thinks they are stupid could have so many horses and a stable and land.
This is only my opinion of course, but I think if you can find somewhere else to ride you will find it more fulfilling. It's possible he is just trying to be funny in which case you just have to decide how much of that humour you can tolerate. But generally speaking, I think starting with someone that has a deep respect for horses will make the experience better for you. Best of luck and thanks. Pat

@@yasminhelenendangeredspecies I know I was truly shocked. I was up on this beautiful horse and that's when he started saying all that stuff. I was waiting for him to say he was only joking or something because I just couldn't understand how he could be around them all the time and have cold heartless view. I think they are the most marvelous creatures and I'm so angry that people like that can have them when I would treasure one as my companion. We are moving soon and hopefully I will make my dream come true so I don't have to keep paying for the experience but I have stopped going to this stable.
@@mrsnorthstar8544 it can be hard finding trainer. Stay with them and watch so you know what to do or if they do something youre not comfortable with.

I love horses. I think they are the most majestic animals. The problem is, I'm afraid of them. What is worse is they know it. I would love to learn to ride one.
Honestly, Kelly, the only reason to be afraid of horses is if you aren't given the chance to understand them. They are so gentle and generous and would never hurt us on purpose, but their size requires that we learn how to stay safe around them. Once you learn those things I think you will find that you can fulfill your dreams. Just make sure you start with horses that have an even quiet temperament. Practice with those types so that if you make a mistake, it won't be a big deal. Most people who end up being frightened by horses have been put in a situation of dealing with a more sensitive, perhaps younger animal. That requires a bit of practice. Stay tuned because we are putting the finishing touches on a course for complete beginners who want to learn about horses. (We've been asked to make it especially for people who want to volunteer at a farm or a rescue). While there will be a charge for the actual course, we'll be doing a free introductory version before that. A lot of people have found our free stuff to be very helpful. Thanks for the video, I am volunteering at a stable and might be working with them full-time soon so it is enlightening to be aware of how they see things. Some of them get irritated by other horses next to them which is very odd to me. But oh well.
If they are irritated by the horse next to them it may be a personality conflict. They don't all get along because they are horses, just like we don't all get along because we're people. As their caretakers its also good to keep in mind- we don't always get along with every horse and they don't get along with every person. Moving one horse to a different stall can change the whole dynamics and atmosphere in the barn.

Very good information! I was unaware that a horse has a third eye lid like my Boxer. Something that not every dog breed has. I was taught when riding in the woods to make sure to move any branches out of the way because my horse would run into them. I assumed it was because she was blind in one eye. Not realizing how they see. ❤😊👍

Since I groom some big mares in a Cross Tie with a stall like a shower, with a drain, there are some days they just don't like the Cross Ties, some days, they just don't like the noise the farrier makes, or the tree trimmer makes.
I always want to see what they see and why they don't like something that particular day. One thing is in Arizona being a groomer and wanting to beat the heat takes away from their grazing time and they want to be with the herd. However Ive established a bond with these mares they are retired when it comes to riding and I always try to see how they see.
This was a great video and I like what you said at the end, horses are not dumb its how they see. Every thing they do is based on how they see and Ill see people forget that . It would be neat if some one could make goggles with horse vision so we could see thru them.

Anyone who says horses are stupid are usually the same people who believe horses must be bullied into submission. Horses can accurately read more human expressions than dogs AND chimpanzees. They will reflect your own energy back to you; anxiety, fear, anger, trust, love, etc. As prey animals, even when they seem oblivious, they are hyper vigilant and always observing and reading their surroundings, and you. They are curious, playful, clever, and funny. If your horse is being difficult, ‘stubborn’ or uncooperative, YOU are the problem. They are incredibly forgiving of our blunders and miscommunications. (Mine sure are!). Even horses who have suffered terrible abuse/neglect can overcome fear/aggression. With lots of patience, and consistent, kind leadership, they will learn to trust and respect you. Their willingness to do this always amazes me. When they understand that they are safe with you, they will do anything for you. When I’m having a bad day, or upset about something, I go outside and sit on the grass to watch them graze, and just be with them. As I’m pondering my woes, one of my horses (a natural born clown) will usually do something outrageously silly, and make me laugh. Then I feel the warm breath of the other, nibbling my hair, gently resting her lips on top of my head, and I know I am truly blessed. Nothing on Earth compares to that. 🥰

Why are all these horses wearing halters? Are the owners too tired to take them off or are these horses hard to catch? Either way, a horse can get something caught on the halter and bad things can happen.
Thanks for your comment and I appreciate your concern. When lessons are ongoing, the young people who work here go out to get the horses for the students. We have found it to be the safest way for them. However, I absolutely understand your concern. We check on them regularly throughout the day and they all come in overnight.
Horses, cows, goats etc are not stupid. Pigs even are intelligent.
This was very interesting. As a young girl I did a lot of horse back riding, but because it was both expensive and I had to travel for education (I`m from Denmark) it fell away as a priority.
But I always wonder, that bacause of the blind spots, why did`nt the horese develop an extra eye? I guess it`s because of how brains function, but imagine horses with an extra eye in the forehead, I´m laughing so hard right now. It would be a problem to put on a bridle 😂
Agree horses are intelligent creatures, there for it is cruel to lock them up in stalls for hours on end as like us they become incredibly bored, it's why they start chewing doors like in this stable
Hello Polly. Thank you for your concern about my horses. In actual fact, my horses are turned out every day, 365 days a year. They come in at night. My barn is very old and has had many horses living in it, long before I moved in 28 years ago. The chewing of the wood occurred long before we moved in. While I agree about the boredom of horses, it was not my horses that chewed the doors. Best regards, Pat
Animals with eyes that are located on the side of its head would suggest a prey animal.
My boy blind in 1 eye so i am very mindfull of where i am and everyone else is. I refused to ride in heavy rain and alot of wind as i feel it is unfair to ask this of him. He no bother in rain or high wind but i still won't
I believe it is highly doubtful that horses recognise other animals as predators. Everything in their behaviour suggests they don't. But what they do recognise is predatory behaviour. A horse can distinguish between a predatory that is stalking for a kill or a predator that is wandering harmlessly among them. They see the intent, not the position of the eyes. That's why you'll see horses chase dogs (a predatory) out of their paddock and why horses will run from kangaroos (a prey species).

Great video, very considerate to horse's, I agree horse's are visually impaired, I believe they have a blank disc, right in the middle of their vision, so they have to overcome the problem by either tilting their head to one side to see out of the edge of one eye and then memorize that image, or they work out what is in front of them with imagination, if they are running to fast to tilt their head,,,there is a proof of this at the grand national stadium when it was first built and they took a horse around the race track for a test run, it fell and broke it's legs, no one could figure out why?... It suddenly tried to jump when there was no fence?... I believe it imagined there was a fence there in the blank spot because there was a extra fence on the side of the race track fence running perpendicular to it, i.e. the horse assumed that the fence continued on across the race track and tried to jump it. There was of course no fence there and the horse fell. If horse's only have peripheral vision with a blank spot in the middle, then maybe changes could be made in shows with jumping with a solution being very wide jumping fences for horse safety? Also horse's might need glasses to help remove the blank spot in the middle of their vision? Or glass mirrors in their horse blinkers to straighten up and align the two images going to their eyes, their brain should be capable of doing the rest, i.e. composing the two images to make a proper 3d image of what is in front of them. .. if horse's imagine then they might dream?
Sad how God is clearly punishing inocent animals daily for his own evil entertainment. So evil and sad
