Bob passed away today (July 18, 2024) but not before creating an incredible body of comedic work spanning 7 decades. A titanic figure in modern comedy...rip Dr Hartley.
Suzanne died four short months after this September 5, 2007 event. So, the three doctors who, as she said tongue-in-cheek, kept her alive to do the show did a fine job.
She apparently was his wife for all of Newhart as well. Such a beautiful, talented and gracious lady.

The Bob Newhart Show was one of TV's greatest shows ever.
Suzanne was so beautiful at any age. Even when she starred with other women considered so glamorous, she always was so much more beautiful. Well, that's my opinion!

@Paul Kryder Troy donahue was a teen idol if the early sixties. He was in a couple of romantic movies with Sandra Dee and Connie Stevens. Tro donahue and Suzanne pleshette met on a movie set. They were only married for a year.
"Pam Mercury45" "[Pleshette] so much more beautiful" -- except in "The Birds" where Hitchcock -- notorious re his despicable, sometimes brutal treatment of his movies' young, female leads -- essentially told hair & make-up and wardrobe departments not to bother with Pleshette, but the sky's the limit with Tippi Hedren.

This was the best sit com ever. Seriously. It was smart. It was clever. In my eyes the key to its success is that no matter how crazy the characters were only Bob and the viewer realized it. Perfect.
You're absolutely right. 10 times better than sienfeld.never missed a episode. Genuinely funny unlike today's sitcoms that are so pretentious and triggered by laugh tracks.the best show on that Saturday night lineup that has yet to be matched.

Bob Newhart showed that its possible to craft good comedy without dirty jokes every two seconds. Bob Newhart had tried two other sitcoms before The Bob Newhart Show which only lasted like three episodes, so he admitted in interviews that's why he was leery at first of trying another sitcom (The Bob Newhart Show)

Suzanne Pleshette died 3 months after this taping losing her battle to cancer. She was already full time in a wheelchair at this time and wanted to be placed in a studio chair for the reunion telecast. Her last public appearance and interview.

I don't understand this UA-cam phenomenon: referring to a wildly successful person or show as "UNDERRATED." It's a joke. I think what the commenter is really saying is, "I, have been unaware of this show, or that person, and I underrated them." Because Bob Newhart is one of the most celebrated, beloved, award-winning sitcoms of all time.

9:53 the host (to Suzanne): "You were certainly not everybody's loving sweet supportive wife at all times." I get what she's trying to say, but watching the series again about 10 years ago I was struck by just how sweet and demonstrative Emily actually was. She didn't put up with BS, but she plainly loved Bob as a person, and not just out of a sense of duty. That made Emily even more endearing.

Exactly ! That's why Suzanne corrected the host.
It's clear the journalist wanted some kind of politically-correct answer about feminism.
But of course since Pleshette is from a previous generation (when you actually respected your male partners).. she dodged the question and answered about Newhart's comedic timing.
@@goofygrandlouis6296 Her academy interviews address both issues, that Pleshette as young working actress was feminist before there was a movement & that male writers couldn't really write for female character, she noticed she was getting laughs for her reactions as Emily, not for her dialogue, so once she had a lock on her character (i.e., stopped playing her like Sandra Dee with a sitcom voice, as Pleshette put it), she told the writers write for a man & I'll make the woman, certainly worked! Plus Emily was always the sane, smart, sensible calm centre to whatever craziness was going on around them. I think the interviewer is referencing that Emily was Bob's equal & partner & not a traditional passive or doormat wife in any way (Newhart himself references in another interview the episode where they learn Emily has the higher I.Q.& the writers make a great joke with that knowledge).
Her character definitely had some feminist traits but I don't think you could really call her a feminist. Emily seemed to do all the cooking, cleaning and shopping. She was made up all the time. However , she had her own career and was clearly her own person as Emily Hartley. Based on interviews I've watched and quotes I've seen/read of Suzanne Pleshette herself, I don't think she's a true feminist either. Quite frankly, I find it refreshing. She seemed to enjoy doting on and caring for her husband but had her own things going on too. Seemed like a really neat lady.

@@EricBrunoBorgman Very glad to have met Suzanne when I was an extra on a movie set. What struck me was that she sat with the extras and talked to us as regular people. Very sad she passed away. Great star and great person!
@@tap585grad706 I love to hear that. I've worked as an extra and there were a few people offhand that I recall were very down to earth with us "little people" :) Robert Urich, was great, John Diehl and Martin Sheen, loved to regale us with stories.

I watch reruns of the show, often. Bob Newhart was a class act. How I wish we had shows like his today. 99% of what airs is trash (I can’t think of the 1% but surely there is something). I loved Bill Daly’s character, the show wouldn’t have been the same without him. All of the regular characters were awesome - I wish Peter Bonerz had been included in the reunion and I would have loved to see Florida Fiedler.
I still watch this show, reruns on cable TV. I loved it in my 20s & I love it in my 60S! Still funny & still relevant.

You know, the world didn't end after this show. If you want to check out one of the funniest modern ladies in that tradition, you should look at Kaitlin Olson. She is not afraid to look ugly or unfeminine if it gets a laugh.

I get your point, but no one is saying that there aren't or will never be, other great and talented performers, just like there have been great and inspiring paintings since the Mona Lisa and that will continue to be; but that shouldn't stop us from honoring and cherishing the greatness that precedes them.

What a fantastic interview! I love all of the stories behind the scenes of The Bob Newhart Show. My parents moved to a high-rise, after I moved away to college, thanks to Bob and Emily living in one. I still watch the show today on Hulu. It brings back so many great memories.
I love watching this show even today. The clothes alone date it so much, but you just don’t care. Brilliant comedy is brilliant!
What a perfect cast.
60sTeen I was in my early 20s when the show first aired and I always loved the bedroom, especially the matching pillow cases and sheets. I always wanted that when I got married.
The line up of the shows on Saturday night was great back then. The Mary Tyler Moore, the Bob Newhart Show and the Carol Burnett Show.

Suzanne Pleshette was such a wonderful guest on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson! A lot of her visits are on U-tube...
She was 1 of few women to guest host.
I have seen some of those videos recently. I did not know that Suzanne and Johnny Carson were such good friends
The moderator mentioned that Bill was a panelist on Match Game. So was Marcia and Dick. They appeared quite often. They were semi regulars. 😊😊

This was fun; thank you, The Paley Center for Media, for honoring "The Bob Newhart Show" at the Center with the clearly appreciative, respectful audience AND sharing this video for the home audience, via UA-cam. It's truly stunning to comprehend that the show is a half century old and this warm tribute is 15 years old.

This was the most satisfying, enriching forty-four minutes I've experienced since I can remember.
Actors And actresses have lost the sincerity, humility and gratitude that people of this era shared. Really enjoyed this reunion more than I can express. I’ll hopefully meet them someday in Heaven

I know this is a little out of context but I loved the line Bill Daly had in "I Dream of Jeanie" when Jeanie was trying to to blink a lot of big gifts for everybody and Larry Hagman was telling her stop blinking gifts for everybody and get rid of them and Bill Daly said, "Can't I just have a Bently?"
Then Larry Hagman said "no!" And, Bill Daly said; "What about a little tiny one?" - LOLOLOL 🤣😂

One of the greatest shows ever
The Thanksgiving show was one of the funniest things I have ever seen. A true classic. Especially Bob's line, "Maybe I'm ordering Chinese baby food."

My Grandma used to watch this show when I was a little girl...now I watch it every night on hulu. I love this entire cast and it was so progressive for its time. I felt always Bob and Emily had such a wonderful marriage, and you could tell she loved him dearly!

When TCM put out its documentary on beloved screen legend Myrna Loy, entitled "Myrna Loy -- So Nice to Come Home To" (1991) I said surely THAT describes Suzanne Pleshette ''to a 't.'' So, "Suzanne Pleshette: -- So Nice to Come Home To" -- an apt description.

Any three of those respected, classy dramas would have sufficed. I've caught maybe three-fourths of her dramas, so here I offer personal candidates for a strong trio -- 'at the head of their class' -- are:
"Columbo" 1971 ep. 'Dead Weight,' "The Fugitive" 1965 ep. 'All the Scared Rabbits' and "Gunsmoke" 1970 ep. 'Stark.' Honorable Mention: "The Invaders" 1967 ep. 'The Mutation.'

I really enjoyed this, I love all these people, they have been a part of my viewing pleasure since childhood. I did get to meet Bill Daily, I met him at an autograph and collectible show, he was the friendliest, sweetest, most charming man. We chatted for at least a half an hour, it was a table which also included Larry Hagman and Barbara Eden, he directed them both very sweetly to be good to me, that I am a nice lady. Just a doll.
It is so enjoyable to watch people talk about their coworkers with such favor and appreciation. And I loved Suzanne from that point!
I Miss Marcia Wallace as mrs. Krabappel on 'The Simpsons' Soo much. R.I.P
Also, I'm thankful Suzanne was able to attend, because she passed away around four months after this, and I just adore her. R.I.P

The moderator is Pat Mitchell, CEO of the Paley Center for Media at the time. She looks familiar because she started out in television working for NBC as an on-air reporter and anchor.
She is excellent. But I enjoyed even the reporter from the back. He was genuinely emotional, and I enjoy with him.
She reminds me of Kit Hoover from Access Hollywood
She looked very familiar, but after looking her up, she's not who I was thinking of. I encourage everyone to look up her Wikipedia entry. She is a VERY incredible woman! Not only in the world of documentaries and entertainment, but she has done an incredible amount of work in many ways to empower women.

Peter Bonerz wasn't even mentioned!!! He was a cast regular and directed several of the episodes! None of the cast members even mentioned his name, did they? Bill Daily .... what a sweet guy ... dyslexia is a very difficult thing to live with. So glad to know that he was successful and obviously very loved. Goodbye my Newhart friends. Thank you for giving me so much joy and being an anchor for my soul in troubled times.

If 92-year old Newhart can 'hang in there' with functional mind and body, ensured in part by specialists in senior medical care, then perhaps his family and fans will witness him surpass fellow, veteran MTM Enterprises employee of the 1970s, Betty White, who came THIS close to reachi8ng 100.

Plus Ginny as she passed in 2021. How rare to have a long happy marriage in Hollywood. I think only Jerry the dentist is the only remaining person still around. I believe he's been a director on many comedies. Unless I missed his passing. Such a great group of funny sweet people. It's so touching how emotional Bill got as he clearly valued the time spent with all his pals there. So sweet.

I just loved at the end of Newhart when Suzanne and Bob are in bed and his entire second series was a dream. "I was married to a woman who wore a lot of sweaters". lol

I am a Gen X and remember watching The Bob Newhart show and Laugh In in the 70's when I was a little girl with my mom and dad and older sister when TV was the best. They don't make show's like that anymore and I doubt there will ever be show's like that ever again.
Dick Martin, wow! I had no idea he was still with us at that point. I loved Laugh In too. Dick was a great comic but Groucho Marx always said, “The Str8 man is always the most important part of the duo.” God bless Dan Rowan and Dick Martin, together again!

Did anyone else play the Bob Newhart drinking game? I grew up in a town with a small college in it. About 2800 students. My parents owned a bar that was a favorite hangout for them. When this show was on the bar would be packed and every time they said Bob on the show you had to take a drink. If they said Hi Bob you had to finish your drink. Those were some fun times.
Was reminded recently of that sitcom moment almost as wonderful as the final episode of "Newhart" when Suzanne/Emily appeared and that was the appearance of "Carol" as one of Murphy Brown's few competent secretaries and "Bob Hartley" flying in from Chicago to talk her into coming back to work for him. Brilliant cross pollination of tv comedy history.
ETA: Also Jack Riley appearing on "Newhart"...priceless.

Yes I just posted about him being the last remaining show member. I couldn't remember his true name just his character Jerry. Very funny actor but wonder where he was. No mention of him either. Too bad. Tom Poston was also a hilarious character on there. Suzette is so dang funny, talking about his cheapness . Didn't realize he died before her. But as she mentioned she became an extremely rich widow. ❤ 😢 RIP Suzette, you were wonderfully entertaining and beautiful.
"The Bob Newhart Show" was the best! These guys were great! Bob is still with us - will be 94 in a few weeks. Sadly, his wife died in April. Peter Bonerz is 85. This was in Sept. 2007, just a few months later, in January, Suzanne Pleshette died, and in May, Dick Martin died. John Fielder (Mr. Peterson) died two years before this. Florida Friebus (Mrs. Lillian Bakerman) died long before this, in 1988. We lost Marcia Wallace in 2013. Jack Riley (Elliot Carlin) died in 2016. Bill Daily lived to 2018. James Burrows - "Cheers" creator - was a maintenance man on "The Bob Newhart Show". He's still kicking at 82.
Thank you for that information, I was wondering who and when they left us. Such great humor and it was clean. Just shows how great these people were with comedic timing and their personalities that made pure comedy gold. RIP to them all. A life well lived.

Yes. So much worked so well together. It sounds too good to be true, but happened. I appreciate it even more because I had a career like that. A group that worked so well together that they enjoyed and provided so much enjoyment to so many viewers then and into the future. I still watch these continually.

Classic show. The opening brings me right back to 72 with those old tv's we all had and a very different time. Shows today don't have the great identifiable openings they did back then
Retaining a sense of humor through tragedy and grief is indicative of a strong person, unfortunately it's not something that I personally possess.

This woman would be gone within 5 months of this reunion, had recently undergone chemotherapy, and had just recently lost her husband (Tom Poston) a few months before this reunion.
Yet here she was, making jokes about burying husbands and carrying on with lighthearted stories, all the while fully aware she wouldn't be around much longer.
This kind of strength is inexplicable to me. I admire and envy it simultaneously, and wish like all hell that I had it.
Laughing in the face of death, especially your own, now THAT is about as courageous as it gets. Her strength and beauty was irresistible, and she had no airs about her. She was not only gorgeous, but the salt of the earth.
She didn't do that by thinking "all the while fully aware she wouldn't be around much longer", chemo. patients are FIGHTERS!

You're right! To some degree, she reminds me of Roz from Frasier. Peri Gilpin was sexy, low melifflous voice and very down to Earth.
I should say is, not was.
I liked Jack Reilly on Seinfeld and Newhart on Big Bang Theory. Both so funny still playing basically the same character they always played.
But Suzanne was one of the prettiest ladies ever on TV.

Sad that all of these wonderful actors have passed away except Bob Newhart (who is now 93). Peter Bonerz, who played Jerry the dentist on the show, is also still alive at age 83 and is going to be celebrating his 60th anniversary this year.
Interesting to note that Bob is the only surviving member of this panel. Wonder why Peter Bonerz was not here.

This host and her camera-person are obviously trying to make her the centerpiece of this reunion and it is really annoying. Too much time spent by the camera on her and not enough on the subjects, (The Bob Newhart Show Cast and Dick Martin).

Great production. Suzanne Pleshette died in January 2008 so she literally only had months left. And thank goodness for the good old days when the actors weren't pontificating on politics and weren't asked to do so because I always find that so boring. Bob Newhart is still with us!
No Hitler wannabes stealing elections and attempting to overthrow the government back then. If being an American 'bores' you perhaps you should move. Thank God you weren't around during WW2. We'd all be speaking German because fighting for democracy would 'bore' you. RME
Suzanne half jokingly said three doctors were keeping her alive. She died 4 months after this filming.
My favorite episode is about paying the bills: Bob had a system to pay the bills then Emily took over but the checks all bounced.
There was a quick mention about Peter Bonerz from Bill Daily and the moderator had a chance to ask him to continue about Peter or open it up to the group about Peter and she totally missed it, either by mistake or on purpose.
To me Peter was good, but not great.

Overall this was a treat; it had its moments. A criticism: at the top 7 1/2 mins. spent / wasted on cast members' resumes. Surely 99.9% of viewers are fans of the series, so they have 'a pretty good idea' of the performers' credits. That time could have been devoted to more q&a, IMO. How disappointing the two professional journalists, veterans at The Hollywood Reporter and the Associated Press (wire service), couldn't come up with a well-thought-out, relevant question or two about events, incidents that transpired during the production of 142 episodes over six years.
I also came up with the idea how to end the last Newhart episode, but I quickly dismissed it, thinking it would be waaaay too obvious of a way to end it.
Bill Daily was adorable.
Bill Daley had a great career. He had a small part, played himself in 2 great shows. (I Dream of Jeanie, Bob Newhart). Regular gigs, lasting fame.
Bill daily was also a regular on I dream of jeannie.

Most comedians who have their own shows or in shows, don’t know how to “adult” with other cast members. They stand out like William Hung. The whole Newhart cast knew how to do so without the nonsense. That could only come with mutual respect.

2007 -- they should have pointed out that Jack Riley is Stu Pickles. Or the hands man from Country Crock Shed's Spread commercials.
Marcia must have belonged to the same Buddhist group as a former co-worker. When he invited the company (we only had about 30 people) to his wedding, we laughed because Rancho Cucamonga and Long Beach was over an hours drive from each other without traffic and could take up to 3 hours with accidents and normal L.A. traffic. Like Bob, we couldn't understand why they couldn't have the reception closer to the wedding venue. I had to laugh hysterically when they told that story as it brought back memories of that incident.
Suzanne was married to Tom Poston from 2001-2007(death).
Both of Bob Newhart's shows were brilliant. It's a shame both of his leading ladies are gone now. It's weird that on both of the shows Bob was in a childless marriage, yet in real life he has four children (his son Tim was also a standup comedian). Yup Marcia has a point there. A show like Mash which didn't attract a big following the first month would never stay on today!

Never saw the show during its initial run or in reruns but that sickening bit (when they'd use it in some way or another as a promotional piece ) was enough to drive and keep me away from tuning in.
Dick Martin also died the year after this interview. A lot of you might not get this but this was when television was

I loved Suzanne Pleshette and her character, Emily Hartley. She was a very witty person. She always made Carson laugh when she went on The Tonight Show.
I still fondly remember those wonderful Saturday nights - seemingly so long ago now. We'd start the evening with Emergency!, then over to Mary Tyler Moore, then Bob Newhart. I liked MTM, but I always thought that Bob & Co. was far funnier. Mary Tyler Moore seemed to always have an insecurity which one could never quite define (such as always calling Lou "Mr. Grant" when nobody else ever did).
Yes great TV then! I was a teenager and had a huge crush on the Emergency guys. But have great memories of television from these wonderful actors. Thank goodness they didn't do any political stuff back then. Hollywood wasn't so insane at that time. I miss those days.
sad to see Suzanne looking frail and clearly aged due to her illness. She was a truly stunning-looking lady with the most beautiful eyes and sexy voice. A fine actress too.
Suzanne came on to the platform in a wheelchair but she was helped into a regular chair because the show was going to be taped.

Don't blame the cameramen/women, there were only two cameras. Blame the director who chose NOT to have a wide shot until maybe two-thirds into the interview. As a result, if someone breaks into the conversation, and goes on for a while, the non-live camera has to find that person before the director can cut to them. Three or four cameras would have been MUCH better, but budget is always an issue. So glad to have this on tape nonetheless!

Suzanne Pleshette helped make The Birds one of the best, if not the best Hitchcock film.
