The reason we keep getting remakes, prequels and sequels is because hollywood is creatively bankrupt. They don’t want to take risks or chances anymore. Now it’s about THE MESSAGE.

I could get behind sequels and prequels if they actually aggregate something to the narrative. The Star Wars prequels, while flawed, did expand the universe and made it look like a vast expanse with complex subplots. The Clone Wars animation built up even more on top of that. Another good example of sequels done right IMO is Kung Fu Panda. But these are the exceptions and not the rule

Honestly, my thought on the issue for the all the remakes, and relaunches isn't a lack of creative ability. But I think the studios are just looking for a sure thing money wise. As film making costs go up, the studio heads are just wanting to hedge their bets on the investment they're making into the project.
is anyone REALLY surprised that they swapped the story of Pinocchio from "Character makes bad decisions and has to learn self-responsibility and discipline" to "Character is discriminated against and made to end up in bad situations and it's totally not their fault and they're not complicit in the actions of their cohorts no matter how extreme"?

I never understood the Mulan remake. It went from "If you work hard you can do anything, even if you are female wanting to do something that is a traditional male role" to "You better have magic, b*tch."
Yeh - it does seem to undermine the whole "female empowerment" thing doesn't it.
You can only achieve if you inherit or are gifted an unfair advantage over those around you.........
Then again, in a world where female only scholarships for universities still exist (despite women already outnumbering men at uni by well over 30%) and female only shortlists for jobs again despite evidence that women in their 20s and 30s are progressing up the career ladder faster and out earning their male peers - is it any wonder this is now seen as the norm.
Isn't it crazy how they took one of the best animated movies that they've ever done and what their best female character ever I mean one of the best characters ever Mulan is awesome the music the animation style the story her character do you know the whole the whole drive cuz she's just trying to make her family proud of her even though it's not what she wants but she's driven by the fear of letting them down and then seeing her dad who's old he's hurt he can't fight being forced to defend his country and blinded by his honor and his ignorance she is so worried for him the idea of him dying that she cuts her hair takes the armor takes the sword rides the horse with the decree for military service joins the all male army trains her ass off to become the best soldier in hand-to-hand combat and sword play become popular and beloved saves the life of a commanding officer gets banished spared the death sentence still comes to the city to save the emperor from the Mongols and she succeeds with her wit her skill her undying resolve she worked and she worked and she worked no matter how many times they told her you're not good enough you're never going to have a match you're never going to make it in the military they told her to leave she didn't she climbed to the top got the metal and became great he spared a life told him to even she could have stopped right there she didn't she followed them on goals she stopped them this is character development this is drive this is a redemption arm this is a great female character she has flaws but she overcomes them and now you have this girl who knows magic she's the master of all Kung Fu she can fly float beat up everybody without trying kick swords in the air it's so freaking stupid it makes no freaking sense it's not entertaining it's not interesting because she's so good she's invincible no one can stop her she's a better fighter than anybody and it's like so dumb at least in the old movie you you can see that she was able to beat the enemy because she had become so good at Kung food and she learned how to use her weight use the right techniques to give her the advantage nothing she's not overpowering him with a woo woo woo magic fireball so freaking it's just horrible it's so bad no I didn't enjoy Aladdin I liked Will Smith's performance I thought Aladdin and Jasmine were casted pretty well Jafar was terrible but I thought overall that was one of their better attempts beauty and the beast was also a movie that I enjoyed now those two don't measure up to the animated movies but at least they didn't destroy the legacy of them I think that's where it ends all the other ones that they did are abominations in my opinion but I will stand by that Aladdin and beauty and the beast were two of the better ones and I think that gave him a false sense of confidence because they did well you know and people warmed up to him and they sold well oh well they like them let's keep making them no no and the Winnie the Pooh that's my favorite one Christopher Robin that's the best one then beauty and the beast and Aladdin that's my opinion all the other ones I can't watch them again but my kids made me watch all three of these a few times and I kind of warmed up to him and I thought that they were really good especially the Winnie the Pooh all right I'm done
Not only that.. let’s not forget that Mulan worked so hard not just to prove she can do something traditionally male, she did it to protect her family, to protect her father who was wounded. That’s a noble thing..
Even in the movie it was said that Mulan could face the capital punishment if get caught, but she took the risk over seeing her father having to suffer in his condition.
It won’t be long they will cancel Mulan and will be some non-binary trans BS movie.
And yes I m not Chinese and I always related to Mulan, cause it doesn’t matter!! I don’t need Mulan to be blonde to understand what she did and relate to her

Mulan in the original knew she didnt have the physical strenght. So she came up with her intelligence to fit in. She left to protect her father, she took the risk of getting killed.
Mulan in the new version had physical strenght before. She somehow had fast growing muscles (magic?) and was better than every man. She did everything to honor her family, but not because she loved them, but because of duty.
Just awful.
I have shown my children all the originals. Now in their teens they despise all the remakes, my daughter always quotes the original Mulan as one of her favorites and pretends the new one doesnt exist. Something i am secretly proud of.

That's very subjective though. Not everyone is going to think the same way and the people making these movies are going into it thinking they can do a better job. Its fine if they remake something, it doesn't erase the old ones that you can still watch. They should still strive to respect the source material and do a good job though. They shouldn't get flack for remaking movies, they should get flack for making bad remakes and wasting time and resources when simply listening to audiences would prevent these flops from occurring in the first place.
It's not about remaking a good movie. It's about breaking the culture who loved it.

I hate how the remake of Mulan said that the only reason Mulan was strong is because she had a magical essence in her. She was strong in the original because she didn't want her crippled old father to die in war. He wouldn't have lasted a second so she had to be strong for her family. A decision she made herself for the love she had for her father.
So she failed badly until months of professional military training, her iron will not to quit despite being discouraged from all sides and her wits where she found solutions quickly.
She never became physicly stronger then her male peers or enemies. Instead she used martial arts, speed and creativity to win her fights.
All things and woman can archieve.
Being "Destined" and full of magic makes that gains meaningless.
Zootopia has a similar message, I feel. The stakes maybe weren't as high or serious, that was about a woman that wanted to accomplish her dream despite her size and background (not so much gender) whereas Mulan chose to do what she did to save her father and make her family proud despite not really wanting to do it.
Point is, Zootopia had a message that modernised Mulan's (Mulan is still relevant today but you get what I mean) and worked for everyone no matter who you are. If you have a dream and really want to do something, you can no matter what you are. It's not easy, you'll be pushed back and lied to and put down but if you get back up, use your strengths to shore up your weaknesses, and push forward you can succeed.
The reason Pinocchio worked so well is because Pinocchio made those decisions himself to go to Pleasure Island and to skip school. The biggest problem of the remake is that society is the reason Pinocchio goes to Pleasure Island and can't go to school. It takes away the message from the original film that your decisions are important and you have to be careful.

Think about this...in the book Pinocchio is an egoist idiot, that only wants to have fun and doesn't care about studying at all, he's like a kid that doesn't want to do or achieve anything until he founds out that if he keeps going on like that he will be destroyed. You can even start to find him annoying, he's not a hero, he's not a victim, he's just "punished" for his own mistakes. Now that's a lesson to learn from!

But the focus was on you deciding to give in to those instead of doing whats right.

The remake put the responsebility on society for what an individual chooses. Therefor casinos exsisting are to blame, not the peoole who decidr to play.
The answer is simple. Stop going. Stop buying tickets, stop going to see these movies, stop giving these people your money, and stop taking them seriously. I haven't been to see a movie in an actual theater for several years now, and honestly, I don't miss it. Just opt out of the bull$hit they're trying to feed us.
A good replacement for me is the Pitch Meeting and Honest Trailer series here on youtube. The videos never fail to make me laugh and I don't have to pay to see a film that will at best do nothing for me, and at worst leave me frustrated edging towards angry at bad writing and many plot holes. You get to kinda see the film but with a humorous take from people who definitely care more about their content than the film makers.

Yes they are honest and passionate about what they do. However no those things don't give you a command of the subject matter.
Some of them are tongue and cheek (Legends of Vox Machina) while others are proper critical satire.
We have been doing that, all these crappy remakes keep bombing in the box office, and getting bad reviews, (heck even new Pinnochio is getting review bombed by the very Rotten Tomatoes critics it was pandering to) and they never learn, and just keep making more.
The avalanche of remakes won't stop, because Disney, WB, Amazon, Netflix, and such are creatively bankrupt, and they mainly hire people that think one way, or vote one way, so there's no diversity in thought, and nobody to say, "I think this is a bad idea to this/that," or "customers won't like this," and such. The reason older Disney movies were so great, is because they had more people who would throw out bad ideas, and replace them with good, and they weren't so focused on pleasing hipster critics.
The problem is we're not the ones who are going to see these adaptations in the first place. Literally all my normie mom friends went to see the Beauty and the Beast remake and they were shocked to hear I wasn't interested. And get this: none of their kids liked the movie. Not one! Yet, when The Lion King and Mary Poppins remakes came out, they did the same thing. And they keep doing it. They go to all of these. Their kids don't have any fun and I get the feeling the parents don't really enjoy the movies themselves either, yet they go to every single remake when they come out "to see what it's like."

It is interesting that they made Pinocchio a victim instead of a boy that learns life lessons. Yet it makes so much sense in 2022. Victimhood is way more important and virtuous than accountability.
The morality of the original has been inverted 180 *.
Turning away from the easy vices that lure boys into becoming donkeys has been completely lost..
Now, lying is depicted as a useful tool to achieve goals..no consequences for actions, so there's no need to develop a sense of personal responsibility/ morality..
Subversion..they want to destroy family, confuse genders, groom your children, pedo acceptance, cashless society etc.. and disney has been pushing this for years, it's just ramped up 300% nowadays

The one remake I actually loved was the 2015 Cinderella. Because they actually did it right! They didn't change anything about the story or the characters from the original, they only expanded on what was already there, making it fresh and reinforcing the morals and truths of the story. They built on the relationship with Cinderella and her Stepmother, they gave the prince an adorable personality not unlike his in Cinderella III, and they kept Cinderella's lovely and hopeful energy. And of course they breathe life into the magic and nostalgia with every scene! I thought that the directors and actors all really understood what story they were telling and they clearly took it to heart and honored it beautifully
They changed some stuff, like the meeting in the forest, which I like so much!
It’s the best live action for me! The story was simply Cinderella, no political messaging, no fake female empowerment, the couple just clicked, they made you believe they were falling in love, and a beautiful message “be kind and have courage”

@@godsamazing2090 that's the 90s version, I was talking about the one with Lily James and Cate Blanchett that came out in 2015. It's absolutely beautiful! I only saw half of the Brandi Cinderella, I liked the prince and the queen and stepmother, but I thought that Cinderella was a little passive for me. But I only saw half, so maybe she was better than I thought
This one is one of my favorite movies! The plot in the og one was not that prevalent, the first one was just so short and didn't really put much character in the characters. The remake was beautiful, and gave the characters much more meaning ❤
I liked Maleficent more, but the Cinderella one was nice too
I was born in the early 2000s and most Disney movies from 1930s-1950s were part of my childhood. They were part of my parents childhoods too and they were 70s babies. I don't see why the current generation can't grow up on those classics like the generations before did.
I was also raised with the classic movie and older TV shows like MASH and bewitched. Almost every piece of entertainment had, at least, a little bit of morals in each episode. Being born and growing up in the 2000’s by amazing parents that only showed things with morals helped me grow into the person I am today.

i dont even believe the remakes are to make us not watch the originals. sure they censor some parts of the old classics but they sure are pushing them every year in dvds, praising how d+ contains all of them and whatnot. they want us to watch the classics too. its more simply about the fact it would he hard to come up with 2 or 3 brand new stories every year so they just take the old stories and redo them in hopes of money. at the same time they can virtue signal yeah we are still number one in family media.
after they have redone all the classics once im sure theyre going to do it again but with different actors or change the time setting a bit or something so

Here here! Those classics were Disney in the heyday. My favorite Disney film from early childhood was "Fantasia." That would probably be too weird and incomprehensible for today's audiences. I agree that, if you're going to introduce new generations to great cinema, it's best to go back to when the films were actually GOOD and had an appeal for parents as well as their little ones.
Amazon has absolutely butchered the character of Galadriel. She's supposed to be a mysterious immortal sorceress, not a perpetually pissed off warrior princess.
And they couldn't even pull off the warrior princess convincingly. Xena would eat her for breakfast.
Galadriel's original character is inspiring and empowering. She's a mother, a wife, and a queen. Graceful and powerful.

I have not seen it, and will not see it. I have seen clips of it from people giving it a review. The best clip is when the pyro cloud from the volcano comes in and burns Guyladrial and everyone within that 3 building village.
Yeah, Amazon is horrible and should have never been given the licenses to Tolkien's works.
I mentioned this to a friend who didn't even mind the series - I said, they disempowered a character that was amazing AND powerful. Being able to swing a sword is a type of strength, but Guyladriel is less for taking away the wise sorceress attributes and replacing them with "I'm better than the boys at punching things". She is diminished, not stronger, and it's annoying as all git out.
They are not “woke” they are antiwhite. When they do these remakes/adaptations they aren’t worried about money, the fans, or even making a good product. They are saying to the fans “this isn’t yours anymore.” They do it with ghey stuff too, which is a whole other bag of onions

@@hakuqtsukii Why would I care if a character is white or black or purple or Skittle colored or whatever? That's a mere surface detail, meaning it doesn't even relate to the character. What relates to a character is everything beneath the surface. Are you reading a book of all its characters by staring at the book's cover? Or are you actually opening the book to read its pages? The same is true when you get to know a character (or even a person, in the real world, so you don't sound like an ignorant fool who assumes everything).
There’s one major lesson to be taken by directors from this:

Stuff like this is why anime is becoming more popular/mainstream. Engaging stories, compelling fleshed out characters and no political browbeating. It's entertainment that's actually made to be entertaining.
And Japan anime/manga industry isn't bowing to the woke. I hope it stays that way

A really good point, seems like anime is more popular than ever and becoming more and more mainstream, not only the production quality is matching the high budget stuff that western giants were able to produce (seriously, series like Demon Slayer or new Bleach season are really beautifull) but they actually keep the entertainment on the forefront and are not afraid to create stuff that can be brutal, serious and have a message other than the inclusivity that hollywood keeps preaching about.
Yup. I’m getting annoyed of all the woke stuff being shoved down movies and people’s throats. I feel that movie companies no longer care about good storytelling and character development, now they just slap labels for the sake of diversity but the character is so 2 dimensional. I’m happy that anime makers have not given in to the woke crowd; they really put in the effort to tell a meaningful message, but even if you don’t get it, they are willing to push out some serious action and entertainment instead of trying to be PC or whatever. ❤

The thing that pissed me off about Mulan was that it already was a awesome girl power movie about a woman going against everything to protect her family.
But instead they took away her struggle and just gave her some magic mojo so it was just her “destiny” to fight rather than just being a person like everyone else but pushing to overcome obstacles
If anything she had to push harder because she was a woman and had different physical limitations. Which makes it all the more awesome when she surpasses her male counterparts. Her victory was well earned.
Mulan also ended up winning the day by employing the gifts of womanhood. She and the men dress as women and take down the Huns from the inside. She isn't stronger than the main villain, she outwits him, using the resources about her. And she didn't back down from the fight to help her people, no matter how she was treated. I can't see how a story that empowering to both boys and girls should be rewritten into the live action crap.
And let's not get started on Disney's horrible decision to bow to China as they commit horrific crimes against humanity.

right? Also she had a feminine power, not a "I'm a better dude than dudes". Literarily the point of Mulan was to act like a feminine woman to overcome issues. It very much said - we need to have someone thinking like a woman to survivve. And they made it into we need women stop thinking and acting like women, we need them to be men even more than men are men.
Disney shows us that they lost every single bit of magic they once possessed.
Disney caught magic plague and died from it's expression.

I watched the Pinocchio movie and it felt like something was missing. Now I realise what it was Pinocchio wasn't acting like a naughty boy like the original.
One of my favorite movies growing up was Mulan… A story of a brave person that marches to certain death to save her father’s life. In doing so, learns of her limitations and how to use her strong suits (mostly her cunning) to strive in this environment.
Then you have the stinking pile of sh*t that is the new Mulan, a person that has superpowers from the start, has basically no struggles at all and the ONLY thing preventing her from being great is the patriarchy.
Now tell me, which one of those is a stronger female lead?

There are fairy tales all over the world, but they focus on European ones and feel the need to race swap characters. They had the right idea with Moana, I don't know why they don't just keep exploring different cultures.

the last good disney remake, was cinderella. it gave a fresh perspective where instead cinderlla was first known as ella, we got to see her relationship with her parents, and we got to see lady tremain being a truly evil woman, though with some better character developmet and some backstory into why she is so evil, as all the love in her heart died after her first husband did, and all she cared about was her daughters

When people say we must recycle to save the planet, this isn't what I had in mind.
When people tell me that, I point out to them that the vast majority of 'recycled' materiel is shipped out of the country to a landfill in another country and isn't recycled at all because it's cheaper for a company to make a new bottle than to recycle an old one. Most plastic bags are burned instead of recycled.

@@WorldWalker128 That's a bit US-centric :P Europe takes recycling a lot more seriously. And burning plastic waste isn't necessarily a bad thing; it's not like _sourcing_ plastics is a hard problem. With many kinds of plastic, burning them is a great way to reduce the majority of their impact on the environment (don't forget, the main reason we use plastics in the first place is how cheap they are to produce, and that translates to their ecological footprint too), and it's in fact a profitable venture. Funnily enough, Norway and Sweden are now competing with each other on importing waste from other countries - there isn't enough to go around :)
Landfills are a problem if they're just a "waste debt" that keeps piling up and leaking toxic waste into the ground. In Europe the cost for disposal of toxic materials in consumer products is usually included in the price to help prevent this. Outright reuse of glass bottles is still practiced - it declined in some places and got revived big time in others. We'll see what works best over time. The proportion of problematic stuff on landfills is still there, but keeps going down.
Funnily enough, USA was a lot more into recycling in bygone eras. A lot of the problem is of course that the corporations responsible for the majority of the waste have more and more control over the legislature. Do you remember when it was the producers who were responsible for collecting and treating the waste? That's why it was worth it for Coca Cola to give you a free box of Coke for every three empty boxes you returned (to the guy who brought you the new ones, of course). Each bottle had an engraving telling the exact factory that made the bottle, and if you found it, you got a bounty and it was reused. If cities had to clean them up, the company would be fined and the money used to finance the services. The big change was when those corporations pressured the legislators to consider plastic bottles as disposable, and managed to remove all of the motivation for the corporation to care about waste.
Recycling is a complicated subject anyway. Europe often recycles stuff that probably shouldn't be recycled. There's still a lot of stuff that should be recycled, but isn't. And while recycling and manufacturing technology keeps getting better, it's not magic. The second huge difference is simply how ridiculous the amounts of waste that the average US home produces is.
For Americans who dislike Hollywood productions, if you can find on any of your streaming services, try searching for movies made in Europe. So far I've watched Russian (tho due to current situation I get people might like to avoid them), Czech, German, Austrian, French, Spanish, and maybe some others I don't even remember. German are usually really well made when it comes to cinematography, Russian are my favorite, also really good, the concepts are interesting and original, and if not the language I'd never guess they were made in Eastern EU. French I recall couple that were super funny and surprising, mind you I don't remember last time I laughed at the US "comedies" at all.
No woke stuff pushed (the most "progressive" part I've seen was second main character being gay, but the plot didn't focus on his love life as the most important part), I also noticed less unnecessary gross sex scenes, overall worth giving a watch if you're looking for something fresh.
I'm just so disappointed at our cinemas in the EU for not showing many, if any at all, movies made in other EU countries, almost 99% is imported from Hollywood instead.
Personally I really really like the Cinderella remake because they still kept it beautiful and magical and vibrant in so many ways without sacrificing the story. Not to mention they even gave Cinderella 18 inch waist to keep it as accurate as possible, that dance scene is a delight.
I agree!! Cinderella was the same magical story. Costumes were upgraded nicely, the love was there. I even liked a stepmom backstory. She was still evil, as she should be, but they gave it more perspective. Overall very nice ❤

Though still not as good as I think the Russian version of the story where she cooks her stepsisters at the end and feeds it to her stepmother, not sure if that's the Russian or Estonian version but something like that..😄

Yes!! I love that they didn’t change the story but added to it like showing her mother was a nice and warming touch. And as you said, the movie was vibrant with beautiful colors and wardrobe.
I'm also pissed at how Dinklage whined about the dwarves in Snow White and the Seven Dwarves being "offensive" and "degrading" for people affected by dwarfism. So all he did was make getting jobs in Hollywood *worse* for disabled actors than it already is.
But in Germanic folklore (you know, from Germany, *where the fucking story is from*) a dwarf is a magical entity that dwells in the mountains and in the earth. They are associated with wisdom, smithing, mining, and crafting and are highly respected for these attributes.
Dwarfism is not the same as being a magical creature.
But I guess that doesn't matter cause they're made from the belief, culture and traditions of "whyte" people.

Edit: woke remake stans always justify racebending characters for three reasons: "representation" as if making your own stories isn't way better, "their race didn't change anything about the character/ is no important part of the character or story/ adds or removes nothing from the story" or "you did the same thing to us by whitewashing countless characters in old movies". Ironically, Snow White being white IS important here because it's literally in her freaking name.

I always considered the US movie to be a different character entirely. More... normal I guess? Like that would be the logical reaction to seeing Ryuk. Light in the anime is a psychopath/sociopath, I get it but this isn't meant to be the same Light. If you take the movie as it it's own thing without trying to compare the characters to the show... then it's a subpar movie but it's not AS bad as it is when compared. I don't like Death Note myself, that kind of story and characters don't appeal to me, I don't care for a psycho on a power trip I wanna root for protagonists, not want them to fail. Even Joker made me root for him most of the time because everyone that he killed had fucked him over, Light's just self righteous and insane.
Fun fact: In the italian dub of pinocchio, they largely fixed these issues, by changing the dubbed dialogue! One of the more noticeable changes is how they changed it from root beer back to beer, removed the influencer joke, and other small changes to improve the story XD
The original Beauty and the Beast was a story of the saving power of love: two people who needed to save each other. In the remake, Disney wanted a strong female lead who didn’t need to be saved by a man. So they took away all character motivation. In the original, Belle’s sacrificial promise to remain with the Beast to save her father both binds her to the Beast, who alone can release her, and touches the Beast’s heart, setting him on his own arc to redemption.
The remake, in removing that promise, leaves Belle with no reason to stay, gives the Beast no motivation for redemption, and leaves no explanation for their falling in love.
Excellent point. Human beings need each other. So many enduring films and stories are so beloved because we see that played out. It's not just that Belle "needs a man," it's that the Prince "needs a woman." Not in the superficial hook-up way, and not as appendages or accessories or trophies. Marriage is the adventure of a lifetime, lasting all one's life. Courtship is the process of finding the person you want to share the adventure with. Belle is not opposed to all men; just to the ones who had thus far presented themselves to her. And I sincerely doubt the prince would have fallen in love with just anyone who showed up. (Imagine one of the Coquettes who fawned over Gaston. Or the baker' wife. 🤷🏻♀️)
On reflection, Belle found happiness in the Beast's castle, not because of the adventure of being locked in a dungeon or being chased by wolves or encountering enchanted household servants. She became happy because of the quiet day-to-day interactions - sharing meals, reading books together, playing (e.g., the snowball fight), being appreciated for herself, and being needed. When a group like Disney decides "that's all reactionary trash" and ditches it to fluff the egos of insecure women, they are abandoning the pith and marrow of life for a pie-crust fantasy. And our souls want and need something more substantial.
The animated "Beauty and the Beast" has always been my favorite Disney film. 😏

Did you know they did a black wizard of oz like a long time ago, and countless cinderella movies have been made over the years with many different races even though the original is french? It wasn't political until recently. Before, no one made a stink about race-swapping characters and movies. The only thing that changed was the re-racialization of everything to be either oppressor/oppressed frameworks. We've basically re-segregated and it's not about equality of sexes or races anymore. It's about man-hating, white-hating, and punishing those who used to be "in charge/control/oppressing" and it's basically a reversal rather than an equalization and it's fueled by hate (for whatever reason they deem worthy of hating someone).

I think the difference between those productions and these remakes is that the former are actually stage musicals. In that situation, it's not so much the visuals that are being prioritized but the sound. Ethnicity takes second stage in all aspects, including marketing.
These remakes, though, almost always claim to have "firsts" in the industry, such as sexual orientation, skin color, empowering main leads, etc. But if these changes don't add anything relevant to the story, they're basically worthless.
I think it was the Critical Drinker's review of Mulan than really won it for me. The original was all about never giving up, perseverance, overcoming personal goals and flaws. The remake was about a superhero Mary Sue. So instead of giving young girls a role model to look up to and aspire to be, the new messaging says "if you ain't special, just give up now and let someone capable do it".

Dare I say, one of the few remakes that made the cut is probably Dennis Villanueve's Dune. He respected the original source like a Bible while adding his own touch of cinematography and improving a lot of the visuals using modern tech like CGI. All while catering also to one them woke ideologies like diversity. And then you add Hans Zimmer's music and you have one under spoken gem in the remake clubs. Seriously I just love what Dennis gets a hold on like Arrival or Bladerunner and I'm all for it.

Dune as a movie was definitely something that needed more diversity and better written characters. The female characters were incompetent and needed the main character to get anything done. There were no dark skinned characters at all in the movie despite it being a desert planet AND being based on middle eastern culture and people in many ways. Not to mention how poorly written, and rushed the latter part of the movie was (also " voice powered sound guns"???). The remake is entirely better and its only the first half.
@@DanimationYT yah the first Dune didn't make sense since majority of the characters where white given the context of the planet's environment. Racism or any agenda aside, basic biology dictates a much darker complexion due to melanin for protection in areas that received more sun radiation. Having a majority of Fair or Lighter complexion should makes sense in Caladan but definitely not in Arakis.

In concept it's not that complex; truly understand what made the source material so great and do all you can to honor that. Villanueve and Jackson nailed it. But they started out with a true belief that the source material was *in fact* great, so honoring it came natural. What we get with most of these remakes or adaptations is a total disregard (or complete misunderstanding) of the original so the writers/producers set out to 'improve' on it...the hubris.
You’re comment about Pete’s dragon I completely disagree. Pete’s dragon was one of my favorite Disney films growing up. And I recently decided to rewatch it as an adult and it hit me in the feels more. As a kid I thought it was a fun film about a boy and his dragon. But rewatching I learned it’s about an abused boy trying to find a new family with the dragon being a “temporary” protector. Finds him food, got him away from the abusers, protects him even from minor offenses, and make sure that Pete finds his true family. Elliot (the dragon) could be an analogy on how children in those situations want someone to be there for them and help them. I think the film supports this theory that at the end of the film Elliot has to leave due to another kid in danger and Pete doesn’t need him around anymore. Also the effects in the original I think are a bit more believable due to Elliot being invisible most of the film and having him interact with the world is still amazes me to each day. Also the original was a musical with a lot of catchy songs that are still living in my head rent free.

My issue with the race-swapping in the Little Mermaid isn't because of what people might immediately think. It's not because 'oh my God Ariel isn't supposed to be black, where's her red hair?' or whatever. It's an adaptation of an adaptation. It's not that she's black, it's the reason BEHIND WHY she's black. Because the company went for woke points instead of actually doing what people have been doing with faerie tales for generations as they traveled and adapted them for the culture they were to be retold in. They adapted them but KEPT THE CORE MORALS, something that was pointed out Disney DIDN'T do with Pinocchio's live-action remake (not that it was a faerie tale, but a whole-ass novel), but kept with the original animated adaptation. Now I don't know yet if the Little Mermaid's core morals from the animated adaptation (a poor one, in my opinion, for showcasing the ORIGINAL story's moral core, though a good movie on its own since, admittedly, some of the original's moral core was steeped in its time. Even I will say that. I admit to loving it as a child and still enjoying it today, however) has remained, but what I do know is that when a company is already hitting people over the head with the Racism Bat, they didn't adapt it for wholesome, positive reasons like they want you to believe.
I'm sick of remakes. There are THOUSANDS upon THOUSANDS of faerie tales out there that could be adapted, from every culture, from every point of view. There are so many that would be great on the big screen in live-action or animation, even with the Disnified changes that would be inevitable. I mean, changing the telling of a faerie tale is far from new, just... this stripping of the faerie tale's core very much IS. Today's Disney needs to step back and stop being so ignorant.
why not go for a mermaid story from another culture. There are so many in all different cultures that they could have created something new and add to the "ariel kingdom" like a story about her cousin from Africa or Jamaica.

All of the new remakes are based on things from our childhood - but those came from originals far behind us! Perhaps Disney should go back and adapt the way they used to - like they did with Frozen, for example. An ORIGINAL remake!

It's like when I watch older movies. If I see a black person I don't mind at all. But if I see one in a recent movie I can't help but think this is forced diversity and all, which is a shame. They are literally making me notice race much more than before. I was born in a town with a lot of mixed races and never ever cared about that, everybody is equal to me. It's like they are making me racist.
An interesting point of the Disney Animated fairy tales are the songs. I was at someone’s 21 birthday party. We ended up doing karaoke hours into the party. When people got handed the mic (the rule was the last singer gave the mic to the next) that did not want to sing, they mostly defaulted to a Disney song from an animated show they had seen as a kid.

Hey! fun fact: the original Pete's dragon was one of the few movies my family owned as a child, so I really love it and have a lot of nostalgia wrapped up with it. However, I also really love the remake! I'm one of those people who wants remakes to do something a bit different, and the Pete's Dragon remake is similar enough that its clearly taken inspiration from the original, but is also a different story with different charactors and I love it. It is an excellent example of a remake done right for audience type number 2.
what also needs to be taken into account is that a lot of the Disney movies we watched in the 80s-90s very much predates us. Some of the movies, like Pinochio, Dumbo and Bambi are from the 40s. Snow White was made in the 30s. If we could enjoy those in the 90s, do they really need to be updated?

The one thing we do as a family movie night.... Friday pizza and popcorn or Sat binge.... we watch older classics before the new movie is put out. The greatest thing my kids told me was the original was better. Why is that? Their uncle has a master's degree in cinematography... it's the least I can do to honor him. She nails it that the messaging is the point and even points out that the messaging changed in the new Pinocchio but stops short on why. The animated version had a great message with "actions have consequences" but that doesn't jive with Hollywood today. They changed it to "you aren't responsible for your actions".

The answer to your question about Disney's incessant live action remakes is copyright law. The movie is neither expected to make money nor be well-received, its worth to Disney in outright extending or otherwise manipulating copyright is priceless.

The best way to recapture the magic is to watch the original with your son/daughter, niece or nephew. Seeing the wonder in their eyes takes you back.

I watched the remake and it inspired me to write two screenplays for alternate versions of the Lion King remake, and people have responded with nothing but appreciation for them. I was immensely disappointed with the remake and YMS’ epic takedown of the first half of the movie gave me even more reasons to dislike the movie.
If you want to watch the actual live action Lion King, just watch the Broadway musical. I have even seen some people say that the stage musical is a little better than the movie.

I lived in Solvang, California from 92-2003. It’s a Danish community and sister city to Aalborg in Denmark. In the town was a statue of “the little mermaid “.It is a replica of the statue in Copenhagen.The statue was very caucasian looking. Probably what the author Hans Christian Anderson envisioned. Most people there are familiar with the actual story in Solvang which is more tragic than the Disney version.

Ghostbusters afterlife did it right.. They continued the storyline and kept the same characters (and actors) and vibe the movies from the 80s had.

Also, years ago, in Hollywood, there was a writers strike for better pay. I never felt they deserved more money, and in the years since, have definitely NOT earned it.
I grew up watching Pete's Dragon & Bedknobs & Broomsticks. In the original, the story is about a boy who is orphaned & abused by his foster parents escaping their clutches with the help of a dragon whom he in turn protects from danger. He finds a home with a lady & her father who live in a lighthouse. The woman is also shown to deeply care for her love who is arriving by sea. The boy & his dragon end up saving the day.
The new version is a hollowed-out husk of a recreation about a middle-aged woman, of course, who hears of a boy who lives in the forest with a dragon. It is wonderfully shot with fantastic special effects and completely empty of the redeeming qualities of the 1977 musical.

Honestly if Disney really wanted younger audiences to experience the "magic" that older audiences got to, instead of doing the remakes they could show the originals in theaters again, like they did with the original Lion King. That's how I saw the Lion King since I was born after it was originally debuted. It wouldn't cost them nearly as much money and they wouldn't be stripping the stories of the visuals, audio, story plots or character development that made the originals so great.
That sounds a lot better to me. Unfortunately, I think others in the comment section hit the nail on the head. That's not the goal...

Disney re-released remastered versions of the animated films of the 1930s in the 1980s and such, and they were big hits. They didn't need to deny their earlier programming and messaging in order to appeal to younger audiences. They preserved those things in order to try to help (grand)parents share their old favorite shows with their (grand)children.
But the people who run Disney now are ashamed of old-fashioned values, and don't want to have older generations reconnecting with younger ones. The current leadership is driving great big walls of division between generations, and they're proud of it.
On top of the other comments here, one of the other reasons disney continues to churn out remakes is because they need to do so, to hold on to the various IPs. If they don't, those works become public domain, and disney doesn't want that for obvious reasons. In the end, it's all about money.
Or, they could actually try to make a good NEW movie to capture the attention of the audience instead of just dusting off old ones. And Disney, please, Please, PLEASE make one without all the f-ing wokeness sprinkled all over it!

I find it interesting that currently there is more creativity thriving in horror movies than anything else right now and this genre is notorious for remakes.

Sadly i seen projects who didn't get funding to reach minimum starting money. So having the moneez is always a plus.

I have a very simple solution..my grandchild only watches the orginals on my DVD player and yes even on our old VHS player , It's magic looking a these films again through her eyes. Collect as many as you can and rewatch them with a kid you know( if you have no children). I have a huge collection of the originals. And as she gets older, i will make certain to introduce her to the great movie classics.

The reason why movies like Coco, Soul and even Moana worked and didn’t feel like forced diversity, is because they balanced all aspects that make a film so enthralling. The stories, characters, musical numbers, and messages were crafted to transmit beautiful works of art. Those films in particular prove that you can have a diverse cast AND make a film truly great! I know we’re far from good quality from Disney or any other grand studio, but I like to think that every now and then we’ll get something worthwhile.
Yeah, despite them being marketed on "diversity" a lot (I'll throw in Encanto as well), those are some of the best Disney has had to offer recently because of just how good the characters and their stories were. Coco in particular blows me away when I watch it.

@@erin0719 so am I!! High five! One can argue that in almost every media where Mexicans are included there are stereotypes/prejudices. In my opinion, it wasn’t perfect but definitely better than other depictions I had seen. The Book of Life does a better job, though.
Ehhh, I cant agree about Coco. It was based on a cultural event already over-used in portrayals of Mexico (Day of the Dead) and the plot wasn’t all that exciting either. Characters face conundrum, so they go from A to B. Well that didn’t work, so we’ll go from B to C. Well THAT didn’t work, so C to D… Repeat, repeat. Throw in a predictable villain plot twist. I think Disney had Diversity Cookies in mind when they came up with that film, hence why it wasn’t all that creative narrative-wise.
I'm glad you touched on the musical aspect... as a HUGE musical nerd, that is my personal biggest gripe about the live action Disney remakes. Best example, the jungle book. The original included multiple numbers (as a character was voiced by him) made by none other than Louis Armstrong. LOUIS ARMSTRONG!!! I mean come on, how do you replicate that? Long live King Louis!!!!!

Being someone who grew up watching original VHS copies of old films and genuinely good and morally objective Disney Films like the original Pinocchio, it makes me so sad how the morals and principles that we once had are being thrown away and replaced with shallow, depressing and dark hedonistic crap with no value, I'm 16 btw 🤣

For an example of how to do an anime adaptation to Live-action studios need to look at Speed Racer. So much of what made Speed Racer popular was dialed up to 11 in the Live action adaptation, the thinking while driving to save on an animation budget, the vibrant colors, the over the top racing, and the campy nature of the whole series, Trixie even got to shine in it. If you've not seen it, I highly recommend it. Its a very fun movie.
I watched the live action speed racer growing up. I enjoyed it but had a hard time remembering the order of events. Now that I am older, I can remember more.

I'm several decades old today. Back in ancient times, there was a movie called Red Dawn. This was a good movie, but a scary one for the times. Growing up during the last part of the Cold War, this movie hit home for me and my friends. The remake could never replicate that fear, which made (in my opinion) the original so beloved. Like you said, most remakes are soulless ....or worse. They're made with corrupted (woke) souls.
That was a movie to make us all think about what we would do if the wars came to our own shores. It was really good.

Agree with you 100%. Truth is, the studios have no new ideas they’ll take a chance on, so it’s easier to go all Woke and wreck a successful story. Anything to appease the wokes and not feel at risk of getting cancelled.

I'll say the old petes dragon scared me as a child with the family trying to steal back their son, you just knew he didnt want to go. So he was essentially a run a away that remained kidnaped and to cope with trauma had a pretend dragon. More sustenance than the new one, although the new one did it justice.

I personally loved the 2015 Cinderella. It had a really genuine and wholesome message and was relatable without straying too far from the original path. Due its success, I had really high hopes for Beauty and the Beast, and being a Harry Potter head, I was keen to see what Emma Watson would do. Unfortunately, it fell flat as Ms. Watson cannot hold a candle to Paige O'Hara. Those of us who grew up in this period and were blessed with a good singing voice wanted to be Belle. She was our icon. Brave and independent, she knew exactly what she wanted and what she stood for. She didn't need to change. What has followed in the years since is a continuation of kind and gentle female personalities being ripped to shreds. It's no longer okay to be authentic but still ask for help from our male counterparts. If women can't save the world ourselves, we're not good enough. But we're also not allowed to love men who are strong and courageous. They can't be honest about their feelings either though. In fact, neither women or men are allowed to be honest or authentic anymore.

The only 3 remakes I liked were The Jungle Book, the 1st Alice In Wonderland & Maleficent. The rest, boring and forgettable.
I actually feel very strongly about this issue. My personal thought is that if a studio, or channel, or producer wants to make a story that is "socially relevant" or whatever, then they should write such a story. Do it from scratch, and make it how you want it. To take an existing story and pervert it into something "relevant" is just plain lazy. That studio or producer is using the name and the legacy of that story to sell to an audience while pushing their message, when a truly gifted writer or producer would create their own story. Case and point, the new Rings of Power show. While it is well produced and if it was a completely original story I would probably love it, but they took one of the most beloved stories, the JRR Tolkien middle earth series, and they used it to make their own version. I the original storyline the main character of the show, Galadriel, was never involved in the war against Morgoth, and was not in any way a sword carrying fighter. Now, write your own story with the amount of depth and history and character development and make your female heroine do whatever you want. But to make an "adaptation" of the Tolkien series and make such changes basically rewrites the whole thing and therefore should not use the Lord of the Rings name. I often feel the same about bands. When a band changes multiple members, whether or not the music is good is less relevant than the fact they should change the name of the band. My 2 cents.....

But again ---that takes thinking for themselves and taking a risk, they won't risk being not a huge woke success. they have to pay their bills and need the work , They used to make under budget films and then work their way up the pay scale but now they cannot even get the door of a studio open without millions. No entrepreneurs are allowed. Look at all the boys in the hood films they used to make, it got a lot of doors opened for some directors and it was all about a certain culture. THEN they sold out over the years and we get this crap.
If you think The Rings of Power is bad I can tell you that what was done with The Wheel of Time is even worse. They didn't even give us a 'prequel' (not many have read The Silmarillion compared to LOTR) as such. They just took the original story and have altered it so much that only the names of places and people are correct. That has seriously divided an entire fan base who were very supportive and loyal both to the books and each other.
When Hollywood thinks it can improve perfection a Train Wreck is the usual result. Have they run out of new ideas ???

Sydney, back in the late 70s I was excited when HBO released "Fairy Tales for All People". I thought I would see fairy tales from other cultures, imagine my disappointment when it was just the brothers Grimm fairy tales staring people of other races. I was truly wanting to learn about other cultures. Just so you know this kind of stuff has been happening for many years.

We were not there so until evidence comes out proving or disproving her accusations we have no idea if they're made up or not. Until you prove beyond reasonable doubt she made up the attack she too is innocent of what you're accusing her of which is bearing false witness. The vibe I get from Elijah is that I wouldn't put it past him to do something like that while under the influence just as I wouldn't put it past any woman to try and destroy a man because she was angry at him. Simply put we have no idea what is going on nor are we likely to ever know.
My kids are definitely growing up with classic Disney. Everything from the old 1940s Mickey Mouse (and friends) cartoons to the movies from Snow White up until Princess and the Frog. I really liked Princess and the Frog and, while it was created in part to give audiences a black princess, I'm totally fine with that because it is an original story with great themes like hard work and responsibility. We really enjoyed that movie. And while there was the occasional movie afterwards that was ok (my now 17 year old enjoyed Frozen and we both liked the live action Cinderella), we stick to the classics 99% of the time.
Live action Cinderella is the only good remake. You can see it was done with heart and they used old ideas that were scrapped from the animated movie.

My uncle has a son whose a little younger than me, I wanna say born in 93/94. Back THEN, my uncle banned all Disney. He said there were either no parents, evil parents, or inept parents. I can see both sides, personally.

Agreed, Amanda A. We don't have cable or satellite, and we have limited internet, so we own a LOT of DVDs. Lots of classic films & cartoons. We are cautious about buying recent releases, especially since at least 2015, when woke started appearing ~everywhere~. Though I got bad vibes from the Disney Channel around 2000 because their sitcoms seemed full of snarky, rude, overindulged teens/tweens and all the adults were blithering idiots.
I will say, though, that I was pleasantly surprised by "Encanto," which I only just saw 1st time last month. There's a wealth of meaning in the story and depth to the characters, and it is, I think, well in keeping with Walt's principles.
Disney live action remakes are the prime example of "if it isn't broken don't fix it" the old princess movies were fine. Remake the Black Cauldron if you insist on remaking all your movies.
As a kid, I loved Pete‘s Dragon. I even believed Puff the Magic Dragon was an homage to him. Watched it again recently and it was BAD. Didn’t know there’s a remake, gotta watch that!

One of MY favorite bits about the Pinocchio remake is how Pinocchio says outright that he has trouble trusting humans who aren't his father. He can only trust other puppets, I.E. people who look LIKE HIM. He trusts that one dancer marionette without any hesitation, and it never occurs to him that MAYBE he could trust the woman who's pulling her strings, and said puppeteer doesn't even do anything to lead his train of thought in that direction. Nor does anything ELSE in the movie help him change that opinion. In a movie where representation is bumped up to "reflect the world we live in" (which is weird, considering how far removed it is from our world in both time and setting), they have no problem saying that xenophobia is totally fine! lol

I love how you end this question on a shot of 'Bambi'. I have three rambunctious little nephews who may very well be the reason why the adage "Boys will be boys" is falling out of popularity these days, but my mom started showing them 'Bambi'... and they were completely entranced by it. Just think about that... a movie with very little plot to speak of, "outdated" animation, slow, relaxed pacing... and yet they were hanging on its every frame. We don't have to make older movies "up with the times" or whatever for modern audiences to enjoy them.
Im a 90s kid and literally never heard of any of this "boys will be boys" shit until they turned it into a catchphrase to attack men as a whole. None of us got away with putting hands on people just because we were boys.
