      thinking about it, humans in 40k have heard all kinds of stories about the angels of death, but 99% of them will go their whole lives without ever actually seeing one. this guardsman suddenly came face to face with a demigod and had no reason to assume he wasn't on the same team, since the history of the heresy has all but been forgotten by the average citizen lest they repeat the calamity.

    The Iron Warrior's dismissive atheism / agnosticism of the Gods is, in fact, _exactly_ what the Emperor wanted!
    In denying the God-Emperor, they inadvertently follow his _True Will_ , as it was intended all along.

      Well, in principle. However even if you deny the divinity of the ruinous powers, warp energy itself will still fuck you up. So by being forced into the Eye of Terror, and having to remain there for millennia, they have been slowly corrupted. So the irony of them actually being atheists is itself ironic because they are chaos incarnate at this point

    I understand and agree with all the accuracy of the Iron Warriors in this animation. Perturabo dedicated his legion to the science of Warfare. It's 10 thousand years training to be as brutal and critical as possible. No wasted ammo, no wasted time. Everything is fast, coolly calculated, perfectly executed. I love seeing the Iron warriors illustrated as they really are.
    BUT, that knife in Mandrak's chest... My dude, these creatures camouflage themselves in the shadow, they are one with the darkness, they are made of things even the Drukhari don't understand... HOW? WHY?

    Ironically, the Guard commander would have been the one to survive if it were the old Iron warriors. For he bent, but didn't break. He bent on the means by which it was achieved, but never broke from his goal to save his men, and the people under his charge. Iron bends, but does not break.

      Depends. The man submitted. He took the easy way, the safe way. That is not the way of Iron. The woman stood defiant in the face of defeat, never backed down, and stared at a sure death fearlessly. THAT is the way of Iron. THAT is what it means to have iron within, and iron without. Internal resolve, and external courage.

    • @Richard_Frost
      @Richard_Frost Рік тому +111

      @@andrewhinson4323 The man didn't take the easy path. Yes, he submitted, but you need to look at the reason why to say if he did so out of weakness or not. Far from the safe way, he took the path that would save his men, regardless of his belief, honor, and loyalty to the emperor. He was willing to sacrifice everything he believed in if it meant saving his men and as many of the citizens as he could. I would agree with you, if the choice he was given was just kneel and your life will be spared, but it wasn't. It was "kneel and your life, and the lives of your men will be spared". Everything the commander did, he did for the sake of the people under his charge. Throwing away everything that meant anything to him personally, in order to give the people a chance to survive. Iron bends. But it does not break. That is the way of iron. You bend to avoid breaking. The inability to bend when given fair compromise is not the old way of iron.

    • @andrewhinson4323
      @andrewhinson4323 Рік тому +32

      @@Richard_Frost I think your line of reasoning is metaphysically acceptable.
      But I will still assert that you’re reading of his behavior from the perspective of both the imperial observer AND the Iron Warrior was that there is no shame in dying loyal. Quite the contrary in fact.
      Notice who lived. Was it the man who knelt to save people? Or the woman who stood defiant and loyal to her cause, even though it was at odds to the Iron Warriors?
      Its really very easy to save your own life while wrapping it up in the noble words of supposedly loftier goals. But when push comes to shove, do you die for your principles, or do you live in spite of them.
      We know from the simple fact that the woman was not only shown mercy (actually shown mercy! By Iron Warriors!!!) but then put in a position of command, that the Iron Warriors valued self-sacrifice for loyalty and principle as the true manifestation of Iron Within. The way of Iron.
      So you can say he was willing to sacrifice his honor, and all that for others, but it had the happy coincidental side effect of saving his own life and looking forward to leading people by his own words. “They will need someone to lead them.” One can just as easily imagine that in his mind swam visions of self-ascendancy under a new banner.
      You can imagine none of that for the woman.

      That was proof for the Iron Warrior that she will be a good leader to his people. Will not bend under pressure. And he left her command with no conditions. Meaning that she will change her presumtions about him and likely will call him if serious threat will occur again.

      The problem with Iron Within isn't that the Dark Eldar lost, the problem is that they behaved absolutely *nothing* like Dark Eldar should nor used the tools they were just shown to have for seemingly no reason other than making the humans look good in comparison. Iron Warriors live up to their name. They are cold, fearless, and yes while traitor technically, they bow to no gods, not tolerate weakness. "Weakness is a Choice" what he means is pretty straightforward. Submission is death, weakness, defeat. Iron doesn't bow, it bends, Iron doesn't weaken, its forged in strength within fire, Iron is Eternal. The commander sealed his fate the moment he choose to bend the knee to him. The Captian lives because she was prepared to fight even against impossible odds, thus she was spared.

      Killing the commander just because he abided to the command of kneeling wasn't wise. He didn't know whether he was really weak or still a valuable asset because of his knowledge or skills (and in fact he was). One could also reason that his will to submit wasn't for fear of his life but out of apprehension for the people, so he surrendered his freedom for the good of his fellows, which isn't a sign of weakness. There was no need to kill him. At most, he could have been exiled. Social darwinism, or better social spencerism, which is basically what is carried on by the Iron Warriors under their ideology, isn't reasonable nor fair, because it leads to faults due to the lack of diversity and flexibility. What doesn't bend might break (you too said that "iron doesn't bow, it bends", which is a tautology, and is in contradiction with "the commander choose to bend").
      And on the other hand, there was no guarantee that the guardswoman would have joined their ranks, she could have tried to resist with force leading to her death in a fight, or she could pretend to enter their ranks just to plot anything to ruin the new power she despise or simply flee at the first opportunity, which is a vulnerability.

Knowledge or skills can be taught and passed down ( humanity's cheat code), his death didn't matter at all. The Iron warriors made the right choice in aligning with their goals. Theoretically, the Traitor Iron Warriors could still be secretly Loyalists - just massive hardass Loyalists, who can't stand weakness and therefore butcher anyone they deem weak, to ensure that only the strongest of the Imperials survive, breed the hardiest of the hardiest, get the best civilian laborers/administrators etc., the best soldiers, the best Astartes candidates etc.
      Ultimately to make the Imperium of Man strong enough to withstand everything the grimdark universe throws at it. At least in theory.
      Them presenting themselves as Traitors could just be one of their tests/justifications to weed out the chaff - essentially to see who is strong enough to not straight up give up, as soon as they're presented with their "salvation-at-the-last-minute" turning out to be anything but.

      @Typanoid true, but I've heard from various sources that one of the agreements GW wanted with the animator was that the Iron Warriors had to be fully traitor, so pretty much the whole story had to be re written so I don't see them being secret loyalists. Would be nice. Again, I don't know exactly how much of what my sources said is true. Other than the iron warriors, they were meant to be loyalists, and it set in the hours heresy. As the animator originally announced.

    I like how the Archon’s demeanor makes a complete 180degree change in a split second, from casually and languidly victorious to utterly furious and fearful, as soon as he hears that the Iron Warriors have arrived. In any human character that would simply be bad writing, but the Eldar species is known for both their vast capacity for emotional extremes and their fickle, capricious nature. They can react to situations much more quickly than humans and have the knowledge and ability to comprehend those situations much more fully than humans. What we would call an overly theatrical, dramatic, or histrionic personality in a human is probably considered taciturn or stoic in an Eldar, especially a Dark Eldar.

    Reminder that as far as the Traitor Legions are concerned, the Iron Warriors are the closest to their Imperial roots, and still hate Xenos with a passion, believing humanity to be the superior races (and themselves superior on top of that, of course). A similar situation happened in Liberation Day when a band of Iron Warriors answered a distress beacon from a space hulk overrun by Orks (admittedly, they slaughtered or enslaved the humans after they were done with the Orks, but it's the principal of the matter!), and they hate Xenos so much that during the War of the Beast they were even willing to team up with the *Imperial Fists.*

    What i like the most of this short movie is the way they catch the terminator figure: towering, intimidating, massive and relentless. The armor sounds heavy like it should be, especially when he crushed the archon's head under his foot, and the power fist hit hard like a brakeless truck. When he jumped out of the drop pod and took a look around, you could even feel what he could have thought "let's tear some puny xeno's ass apart with true iron". Or when he shooted at the archon wich was about to strike the guardswoman, he was like: "look at me, pick someone of your own skill".

    Did the IW just cut the planet off from the Imperium, but left them to their own devices?

    I was born prematurely and had respiratory issues as a result & a hefty chunk of my childhood was spent in oxygen tents in a hospital. I didn't give up and worked to strengthen my lungs. I lived. Hit by car. I lived. Fell off a cliff while free climbing. I lived. Pushed down a flight of stairs and broke my neck. I lived. Cancer hit, twice, and I could have given up, been a victim. I chose otherwise. The universe has been trying to kill me since the day I was born. It has failed every time. I chose not to be weak, not to be a victim. I chose to be strong. At that point she had more in common with the IW then she did with anyone from the Imperium. Add the fact that the IW Leader was from that world and was going to fortify it rather then destroy it helps a lot.
