Daft Punk are a French electronic music duo formed in Paris in 1993 by Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo and Thomas Bangalter. They achieved popularity in the late 1990s as part of the French house movement; they also had success in the years following, combining elements of house music with funk, techno, disco, rock and synthpop. They have worn ornate helmets and gloves to assume robot personas in most public appearances since 1999 and rarely grant interviews or appear on television. The duo were managed from 1996 to 2008 by Pedro Winter (also known as Busy P), the head of Ed Banger Records.
After Bangalter and Homem-Christo's indie rock band Darlin' disbanded, they began experimenting with drum machines and synthesisers. Their debut studio album Homework was released by Virgin Records in 1997 to positive reviews, backed by singles "Around the World" and "Da Funk". Their second album, Discovery, had further success, supported by hit singles "One More Time", "Digital Love" and "Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger". In March 2005, Daft Punk released their third album, Human After All, to mixed reviews, though the singles "Robot Rock" and "Technologic" achieved success in the United Kingdom. Daft Punk toured throughout 2006 and 2007 and released the live album Alive 2007, which won a Grammy Award for Best Electronic/Dance Album. They composed the score for the film Tron: Legacy, which was released in 2010 alongside its soundtrack album.
In 2013, Daft Punk left Virgin for Columbia Records, and released their fourth album, Random Access Memories, to acclaim; lead single "Get Lucky" reached the top 10 in the charts of 32 countries. Random Access Memories won five Grammy Awards in 2014, including Album of the Year and Record of the Year for "Get Lucky". In 2016, Daft Punk gained their first number one on the Billboard Hot 100 with the song "Starboy", a collaboration with The Weeknd. As of 2015, Daft Punk had sold over 12 million albums worldwide.

There is something that is rarely discussed in relation to Discovery: Interstella 5555.
Interstella 5555 is genuinely one of my favourite anime films ever. It's so beautifully made and so underappreciated.
One of my favorite movies ever. It’s so cozy and just a lovely story all around.
the documentary Daft Punk Unchained tackles it quite well, including the artists and production on the japan side. hopefully you all have seen it
Watching Interstella 5555 was the greatest ethereal musical experience I have ever loved. Truly the greatest tribute to music ever conceived. 😏
Interstella 555 is underrated af :(
The genius of Daft Punk is that they believe in quality over quantity... they will never do an album for the sake of doing an album which makes them true artists in my eyes 🔥
They let it age like fine wine before it ever sees the light of day :)
I’d disagree, they stated that Human After All was an album that was made “just because” it was made in 1 week
@@abrahamrodriguezpineda1848 human after all wasn't made for the sake of it, they made it with an intention, met that intention and in my eyes it paid of pretty fucking well
Yeah, they dropped the ball on Human After All
mgmg I blame Virgin Records. They rushed Daft punk for that project. I think the Alive 2007 live album is a taste of what would have been if Human After All was produced properly. I hated Human After all, but when I first listened to Alive 2007, I took that back.
I genuinely do not get the overwhelming dislike of Human After All. To me, it's one of the most underrated albums of all time and some of their best and most memorable songs come from that album.
Been looking for this comment! Human After All is a classic 👌 honestly don’t get the hate at all, I grew up listening to it
To be fair tho, all four albums have super memorable songs. I personally think Human After All doesn't compete with Diswcovery or RAM in terms of a cohesive and memorable album as a whole. But yea, Robot Rock, Technologic, Television rules the nation, Prime Time of Your Life are all bangers
i love HAA (it's my second favorite after Discovery), but it makes sense why others may not have liked it as much. it's gritty, aggressive and a lot more cynical compared to how "fun" its predecessor was, so that may not have sat well with everyone expecting them to put out another "Discovery". Alive 2007 really does a fucking amazing job at taking the songs from HAA to a whole other level though (yes, even brainwasher)
I agree with you. Human After All was a pretty solid base to Alive 2007
Human after all is a classic.
Two robots making music in their own way to be enjoyed by humans listeners.
I love it!
Woah woah woah, i for one will not tolerate any Homework slander. Every song is a different attempt at all the house/ EDM genres that were swirling in europe in the 90’s. Chicago house, disco house, acid house, etc. And every subgenre the robots go into is executed perfectly.
I implore u and anyone reading this to return to Homework. It’s an accidental debut made by two friends in their bedroom who worshipped Chiq and Black Sabbath equally and loved music that made everyone dance.
“STOP THE MUSIC AND GO HOME! I REPEAT: STOP THE MUSIC AND GO HOME!”
Agreed, it's an album I can keep going back to and it still sounds fresh everytime!
Don't forget Brian Wilson too
Shlok Gharia nice pun
I agree, he doesn't understand the impact.
Bro facts. Homework is always overlooked, but in my opinion, it's one of their best albums. It's actually my favorite of theirs. The whole "Homework era" deserves more recognition.
I'm still upset we didn't get Alive 2017...
Alive 2027 Maybe ??!
I was waiting for it. Now if Alive 2027 comes out I'll be 34 and idk if I'd have the energy to go to concerts lol
There were rumors of an Alive 2020 but alas the world got fucked
aliver 2037?
Ok so.
Alive shows were always in years that ends in 7
So if DP do another Tour is going to be the 3rd time
So 7 x 3 = 21
Alive 2021?
Or Alive 2022 due the Covid
The great thing about Daft Punk is that even when they are "bad", they are still better than 99% of other music. And when they are good, they are untouchable. Albums like Human and Tron are harder to dance to, but they covered our backs with full remix albums of both that are seriously underrated and jammin'. Alive 1997 deserves the same justice, as well as every other unknown track they've produced, such as the Musique era.
Facts my guy
A pun adding ‘Justice’ Lol
This man really gonna say Homework tracks aren't thought out and have no replay value smh.
And then pronounce Guy-Man's name wrong 😬
Yeah, I listened whole at least few times in past year.
@@BOLOYOO its monthly basis for me. in my personal top 10 of all time. don't even like EDM music personally...
He's young. Very realistically, homework and Discovery is his parents music and RAM is what he grew up on. Give him 5 years.
RIP Daft Punk...Absolute inhuman geniuses in electronic music.
Okay I found this video because Volks posted it in the community part of UA-cam so I’m not really caught up... What happened? Did they like officially retire??
@@jinxedsphinx3600 yes they did, check the youtube trends...
Completely disagree what you said about "Homework" it's one of the best debuts of an album and also one of the greatest electronica albums of all time to this date. It's Chicago house style. Good video besides that point.
yep
Thank you
Totally agree with you. Homework is a masterpiece
”no replayability” uhhhh
I'm praying for a new Daft Punk album... It's been 7 hecking years by now
It's crazy! I remember everyday I would check the news and forums for rumours of the new album. The anticipation was amazing!
They are working on ost to the horror movie and it's confirmed so... ;)
It'll be the 6th DP Album if you count Tron's OST
Bummer it's nearly impossible it'll be as good as random access memories
I guess we won't get anything more from now on... so sad
oof
jeez. homework gets some of the most replays from me. really great album if you start actually looking into why the music is so groovy. the use of only one note in rollin and scratchin? wild.
Homework brought house music back to life around the world, including where it came from
Anything Daft Punk touches turns to their project...its beautiful
Daft Punk needs to go on one more tour. They're music is still so relevant. They stick out from the saturated Edm/club music in such a profound way. New generations need that exposure.
Jack Spediesy One more time! (1x)
One more tour before I die
Exactly. EDM is very over saturated
I have bad news...
well...... 👁️👁️💧
Definitively make a video about random access memories!
Im just surprised their music hasn't been shot into space yet.
"not much replay value today" lmao wtf?
20+ years on, Homework still sounds fresher than the vast majority of modern techno/house (no pun intended). I heard Derick Carter drop Indo Silver Club in a set recently and it brought the house down.
aaaaand, hits a little different today. Peace out ROBOTS!

You should make a video about the early 2010's beast coast wave
my friend and i always joke about becoming the daft punk robots after a fentinyl lab accident.
I mean even Daft Punk themselves refer to them being in “an accident in the studio”
i find it funny how a member of daft punk explained why they're hiding their faces to a magazine called face
I like how their robots yet one of their nicknames is “Guy, Man.”
you staring at me way too hard 😔
This dude basically said that homework has “no replay value”, and describes the songs as repetitive and then continues to praise aerodynamic as something infinitely better than anything daft punk had done prior. Discovery is an entire masterpiece and every song in it is great, but this is also the album that has a ten minute song literally titled TOO LONG.
Ok at least we can agree that RAM is the best album of all
Homework is raw. Genius stuff. One of my all time favourite
I like Discovery better tho ngl
@Ghamma Wayve RAM was really good, just a new style
random access memories
discovery is easily their best record but I respect your opinion
The visuals in each video just keep getting better 👌
Volksgeist-“lets talk about that”
Me- *has flashback to Good Mythical Morning*
awesome visuals
Tron Legacy is my most listened to album year after year. Something about riding my motorcycle through the city to the soundtrack gets me going
"Not much replay value in [Homework] today." Huh? Full of bangers
Yeah that was a truly dumb take that could only be given by someone who doesn't go outside. White boys gonna white boy unfortunately.
Imagine being global superstars, with all the good trappings of that, but they can still nip to the local supermarket with zero hassle. That’s how to control your image! ♥️
Have a school project about Daft Punk which I have to deliver today, and this video getting posted couldn’t be better timed! This was so helpful, thank you so much
The best thing about them is ghat they were music producers on my favourite movie *Tron Legacy*! Still love that movie just coz if the music
I didn’t know they were the producers of the music for a good while after that movie came out. But when I did find out I was like...makes sense
I don't know, to me only Derezzed is a banger, the other musics need to be listened on the movie imo
the music is great but fuck dude you need a new favorite movie
One of my favorite soundtracks of all time!
Doctahh nah get out of here. Tron legacy is an under rated masterpiece in world building
man, i have so many memories listening to Daft Punk at key moments of my life - especially when i graduated high school during the release of “RAM”
it feels great learning more about their history and who they are.
thanks for another great video!!
95, right?
I am always waiting for your videos! Such interesting content!
Homework might not hit you but homework is amazing in my eyes and I always go back to it. The things that you faulted the album for is the point it’s supposed to sound like and some songs are supposed to sound like repetitive loops that eventually switch up. I’ve always had an ear for music and even at a young age I’ve always enjoyed that album. I remember watch da funk video on mtv, ahhhh man they were so ahead of there time. Replay value is a 10/10 but that’s my opinion; everyone’s entitled to their own
Thank you for making a video about Daft Punk! I've seen just about every video so very happy to see a new one pop up :)
YOUR VISUALS ARE ALL THAT!!! Really well done. Keep up like that, you won a new suscriber.
Welcome aboard!
2:21 "there is not much replay value for this record today" ohh boy is like you haven't seen 2manydjs, erol alkan, or pedro winter pulling baselines samples from this record literally in the majority of their sets.
Very nice timing bro . This is better than most videos that just came out yesterday
This is easily an instant classic
Our work is never over..
I'm here commemorating this amazing duo of synethic humanoid robot geniuses. Merci, les Robots.
your production level is amazing! I just love your editing and transition topped with your commentary is just pleasing to the eyes
All your videos are so high quality. Nice work!
The TR-808 and TR-909 are drum machines not synths
Stopped taking dude seriously when he referred to the SP 1200 as a drum machine and the 909 & 808 as synths. Also he clearly has no idea what a compressor does and just wanted to name drop the Alesis to make it sound like he knows his music gear lololol
Also he says “the Roland MPC”.
I guess technically the 909 and 808 are drum synths, but definitely should’ve been categorized as drum machines.
Yeah I guess you're right on the 808 & 909 technically using analog synthesis but nobody who knows anything about them would call them synths.
I have been waiting for a Daft Punk video, thank you Volksgeist.
Dude I have been on a big daft punk binge for the last week and a half so for this to come out is perfect timing 😤
Not mentioning their labels Roulé and Crydamoure? Nore Stardust? You can't understand the evolution between their sophomore debut and Discovery because they were like labs and they kept their best ideas for Discovery.
God yes finally what I have been waiting for. Thank you good sir
I wish they’ll release an album soon! It’s been sooo long. Great video btw keep up the good work 👍🏼
I never thought I would cry for a band/group/musician before x(
Who's here after the 'Epilogue' video? :(
:(
I'm pretty sure Guy's name is actually pronounced "Gee." This is due to it being a sort of nick-name derived from the first half of his true name, "Guillaume Emmanuel."
I honestly didn’t know his name could be longer.
I think it's interesting that his name in this form repeats itself. "Guy" means a man. "Manuel" means "God with us", a form of the name "Emmanuel" given to Jesus Christ. Then "Homem" means man and "Christo" is Christ.
Dudes name is basically "Man-Christ of Man-Christ" lol
BEEN waiting for this vid
Thank you for producing this
9:59 "While [the TRON Legacy OST] isn't particularly interesting nowadays-"
*stares in End Titles*
In the 90's Daft Punk primarily played unmasked. I only know of 3 performances out of the 100+ 90's performances where they wore masks to perform live. It was primarily for press photos.
This is one of the best video essays about music I have seen. I would love a look into Random Access Memories or Discovery if at all possible!
Yea I needed that kind of video, love them
THANK YOU FOR GETTING THE "DAFT PUNKY THRASH" QUOTE CORRECT
It's crazy how you always do a video about my favourite artists. For me, you're the best music channel on youtube
I love the sweater, autumn vibes out here
Great video! Really Love your stuff and like daft punk so Good combo
4:11 It should be pointed out that the TR-808 and TR-909 are also drum machines. The Emu SP1200 and the AKAI MPC are samplers, which are often used as drum machines. Also that picture of the TR-808 is not an original TR-808, but the boutique remake released by Roland a few years ago.
LEGENDS NEVER DIE
Best video of your work thank you!
I was a year old in 1993. My mind was blown by the robots in 2000. I was eight. It's remarkable that such inspirational guys can inspire all of us with their passion. And I'll always be grateful for that. Still a fan after 20 years. And that's something special. 💖👌
6:55 this made me sad
Wtf was that? The sound clip that sounded like weird yelling?
Here now that they broke up :(
More Daft Punk videos this was amazing and I cant wait for more! now im going to go check out the nebula vid ;)
Thx for all ur vids :)
they made the weeknd reach 1.6B view on UA-cam in his song "starboy" and as an X'O fan, it's one of the best of the weeknd's hits ❤️
Concerning DP's debut 'Homework', "While there isn't much replay value in it today"........Wrong. Or more importantly, just as you are a critic-which is about subjectivity, I would argue that 'Homework' is a great debut album that although simplistic in its presentation, is still just as catchy and inspiring today(2020) as it was in 1997. Great music is timeless.
Love your videos
Your videos are so amazing if I had money I'd love more content from you keep up the great work
Human after all is so underrated

This is great! Thanks!
Really interesting video. Thank you :)
They're Gone 😭😭
Gorillaz and Daft Punk this week. My 2 favourite artists ever!
i just started to listen to daft punk and volksgeist made a video about them! nice
The production quality on your videos is insanely good. I just discovered this channel and can't wait to see more of your videos. The parts where you cut to your face are kind of intense though, the feeling of being looked at hinders me from following what you say. Nonetheless, great video!
They're similar to The Weekend. We only know them through their work, staying professional and revealing just enough about themselves for us to want more.
was this guy even alive when Homework came out?
I grew up listening to these guys, one more time was my first favorite song according to my parents. these guys have helped form me to what I am today. I thank them greatly for it
Thoma's helmet was inspired by Gort from "The day the earth stood still". Both of their discovery era helmets had help from the guy who designed the jumbo tron infomation screens as well.
Guy’s helmet also inspired the Spartan EVA helmet from Halo 3
