This is the BEST SONG in the album! It’s poignant and introspective song about dealing with the aftermath of a painful breakup and the lingering feelings that come with it. The song uses vivid imagery and metaphor to convey the depth of the Taylor’s emotional turmoil.
I was pleased that I chose the black dog special edition vinyl bc it’s my favorite song of the anthology

The more I listen to all the songs, the more I notice the great production, nothing feels too much or too little and every song has its own soundscape.
This is actually the first song off The Anthology! (the original album closes on Clara Bow). This half of the album is mainly produced with Aaron Dessner and a lot more singer-songwriter (personally, my favorite), so I think you will enjoy it more than the first half.

It’s a book you Can’t turn off. A lot of her songs make me feel like that.
The black dog is also a metaphor for depression. It’s an ominous being, making it a perfect description for the feeling of lingering sadness and darkness.
“Other “black dog” meanings”:
[a way of referring to feelings of depression (= great sadness and lack of energy): There were times when he wrestled with the black dog and couldn't write.]
Also:
[This story makes use of folktales where black dogs symbolize death. Another famous ghostly black dog may be found in J.K. *You never know… her live performance may be exactly how you want her to perform it. Her live performances are just so fantastic and unmatched talent. 3.5 hours of nonstop dancing, performing and singing.
It's funny because the Black Dog PUB in London claimed this song and fed into rumour Joe visits there, but there's an actual Black Dog BAR in Cork, Ireland this might be about and they put up a 'team Matty' sign 😂
She actually inhales on the last syllable of breathing. It gives me chills, it's soooo effective!
The synth is fine for me because it makes such an INCREDIBLE contrast to the other instrumentals in that last ...what is it, bride and chorus? Or chorus and coda? I forget 😂

5:50 this is such an insight for me! I’m not a musician in anyway and I love this song but I felt this screaming part felt- idk muted? Not in your face enough & I think you hit the nail on the head. Some big drums would kill right there.
I think this song has many parallels to Fortnight. Mental health, the black dog, the rain on the phone booth, the greige fabric.
I also hear several crescendo similar to Fortnight.
It is not the last song. It is the first song on the second album. The Anthology.
No, but I’m fairly sure she’s actually talking about the ~song~ “The Starting Line” rather than the ~band~ based on the punctuation in her lyrics!! Most people don’t seem to have realized this important difference!

Why the strings are so distant and sounds so dull ? What a waste.
The producers failed her with this entire album. They didn’t cull the 31 songs into a focused album of about 10 songs. So many of the songs sound the same that it detracted from the remarkable songs like this one. You’re also right about this song not having a great lead guitar at the end after she screams “old habits for screaming….”
Musicians are artists. Would they dare tell the artist the Mona Lisa was too big, should be a 5" × 7"? A ridiculous argument.
Taylor is also a producer. She is doing exactly what she wants. She wanted to put out a double album, so she did. She wanted to work with Jack and Aaron, so she did. She wanted it to sound like this. She is telling a story. She is making art. It helps her to process difficult things in her life. The cool thing is, you don't have to listen to all 31 songs at once. You can just listen to whatever songs you want, whenever you want. Or, alternatively, if people don't like it, they can just not listen to it at all!
It is her story and who are we to tell her that it should have done it another way !!! She did what she wanted and she needed to do!! I love that on her .
I think you forget that Taylor also produced every single one of these songs so they sound exactly how she wanted them too. The album tells a her story how she intended it to be heard.
