World Trigger: The underdog among underdog series with an underdog MC among underdog protagonists
ALL ABOUT UNDERDOG :"
Even humanity are the underdogs of the setting haha
On another note they are doing an amazing job on adapting Season 2!
Yes I've been watching it! It's a remarkable step up
Season 2 came in hot, I was not even expecting a second season and so far it's been SOOO good
@@platinumphazer if they keep this level of quality, season 3 which comes out later this year will be amazing.
@@gamesbyzeta1434 It was!!
The description of how combat plays out with inventory limits and team building has me very intrigued in the series.
Yeah just a warning its (very) stragetic (sorry about my english)
i love mikumo since he not op, he has his shortcomings and strength
You know the show is hella good when watching the opening for the season after 5 years without rewatching season 1, the moment the cast appear and you instantly remember their most memorable features/ fighting styles eventhough there are *LOTS* of characters!
True. The moment I see double shotguns it's instantly Suwa. Or if a ragust with a kogetsu appears then it's Murakami
Ken: DO YOU SEE MY TWIN SNIPE SENPAI?!
I feel like Tamakoma, and in some sense all of Border, is one giant dysfunctional, yet very effective, family of destruction for the good of humanity. It's a lot of fun to watch them work together and grow, and gain more individuality over time. I kind of like this because even though we are following the special main 4 characters, it isn't thrusted upon us that they already have everything they had ever wanted to do sorted out, and we figure it out along the way with them. I think this leaves a lot of room as to the direction of the series because even though they have a main goal, I don't think it's the only main goal they could ever have and i want to see where they go from here.
In many shonens, i kinda know where they are going, the path is too clear. They can still be great unique and fun, but I like variety in areas I didn't know I wanted
Exactly why i luv world trigger so much
It's funny, how people say that WT is a slow burn, while i just sit and watched it for 3 days before and after work non-stop from the episode one few days ago.
In retrospective: i don't know what hoocked me, i just found myself in situation, when i care for the cast so much, i couldn't stop watching(tho it was tested in the shitty boring filler arc that i hate, bc i didn't know it was filler at the time).
Fights are great, yes, i love, how tactical and intelegent they are... But for me most of the appeal lies in the shows/manga cast of characters.
I love most of the side characters almost more than i love our main trio(or should i say quartet? LoL).
Ninomiya squad, Sudzunari squad, Suva squad, Nasu squad, Arashiyama squad(Kitora is the best girl) and everyone else is just to great.
It's so warm when ever the other characters on the screen interact with main protagonists or other side characters, that what i like this series most for.
And your video is great, your manner of speak is very natural and pleasant to listen even for a foreign.
how could you ignore the super elite, jin? World Trigger is one of the few stories that does a character whose major power is "I CAN SEE THE FUTURE!!!" well. He's not super blunt about people's futures because that would change them for the worse, but he's not some wise all-knowing badass. It's honestly presented as a curse in some situations, like when he was banking on kotaro not doing the thing that would obviously put himself in the most risk, but still had to have faith that things wouldn't turn out for the worst anyway. The story does overdogs just as well as underdogs
Very true! It also implies how, because of this power, Jin feels incredibly responsible for the safety of the citizens and the agents. Even when things work out fine in the end, he tends to feel guilty because he knows it COULD have been better. Thats why some of the older characters that have known him longer constantly say that he is "moping around" or "looking depressed". They know he takes every civilian death/kidnapping personaly.
Thats a very mature and interesting way to write about a power that looks like its OP.
World trigger itself is an interesting idea of multi dimensional type of genre.
The MC is somehow a unique type of protagonist where he's somehow righteously selfish, he's weak but has his own smarts + his stupid righteousness to compensate which kuga (one of the OP broken characters) liked.
But what really was the most interesting things was how they put the "gameplay" into matches. Also the trion concept was one of the most brilliant fictional things i read about. Adding the multi dimensions, then creativity will get you anywhere.
This is also why the anime had no problem branching out into an anime exclusive arc. After the long stop of the manga.
World trigger is popular in Japan sadly it fails to take off to the west but we have a cult following Hope it gets more recognition.
How popular is it in japan? anytime i google it i see stuff like pill bottles, stickers, all kinds of crazy merch. I've always wondered just how popular it is over there
@@Enkiiper before the 2-year hiatus, the momentum are in route to toppling any other Jump manga at their time.
@@Enkiiper it ranked 26th in Oricon's top media franchises in Japan 2021(half year) beating franchises like Dr Stone or Record of Ragnarock
It's popular enough to trend on Twitter when a new episode is out.
Watching Chika and Osamu improve is the best part about the anime for me. Their struggle to overcome far stronger opponents is great.
It's so great to see World Trigger content on this site.
To put it simple. World Trigger is one of those hidden GEMS!
Tnx for covering it, and i really wish it had more recognition.
At least someone is covering World Trigger
It is very good anime and SAD to see it is very underated...
The last volume sold more than boku no hero it's great to see the recognition
that's nice to know, really... wow
@@bayernkgb3194 it's still maintain a giant popularity in Japan, even after 2 year hiatus.
It's only underrated overseas.
I'm so glad that Ashihara got his footing back by switching over to Jump Square and serializing chapters monthly. That 2016 hiatus HURT.
And it's crazy how World Trigger is the oldest Shonen Jump series after One Piece and HxH (since it started out in Weekly Shonen Jump; if excluded, it's My Hero Academia)
Isn't D gray man still being serialized too? Also Jojo bizarre adventure
@@Bajolzas True true. I forgot about those cuz they've been monthly for so long
@@brandonadrien3476 Actually, JoJo is a seinen now so it dosen't count
I’ve only read about 6-7 volumes & honestly loved World Trigger.
I found Yuma to be very interesting, I really liked how apart he feels & how he approaches Japanese normalities but what really hooked me was the power/fighting system. The first black trigger fight is what hooked me. Sooooo interesting
I started world trigger just because I had nothing to watch and I saw s2 had soms hype for it, i doubted i'd finish it but it's turned into one of my favourites
It's videos like this that make me really want overlooked series I love to get traction.
great video! your delivery was so natural it didn't feel scripted at all!
For world trigger, it took me awhile to finally start reading, but as soon as I finished the first chapter, I read the next 100 over the week
This is my favorite anime of all time not because of any one thing it does best, but because, taken in total, there are so many amazing things about this show. The battles are tactical and never feel forced, the characters are all super memorable despite one-note designs that actually make them look like normal people, and the way the author builds and introduces new elements to the world alongside new characters keeps the show always fresh.
I've got into world Trigger somewhat by accident.
I've seen it's description pop up on many anime sites that I visit, but for years I couldn't be bothered to look at it. It always felt like 'yeah, just another 12-24 anime with tons of fan-service and/or dumb writing that lets you in the middle of a cliffhanger after spending a dozen episodes throwing flashy moves around and screaming like idiots(like God Eater);. But this winter I deceided to give it a try seeing it got a 2nd season and because I've caught up with most things that were on my radar. And there came the shock: 75 EPISODES. For some strange reason, I instantly wanted to watch them all.
I can burn through a 24ep anime in a day, which leaves me bored and empty, so I quite enjoy stuff that I can binge. And this might be what it takes to get into World Trigger. Binge watching a slow burn series is really great because the spread out action feels continous and the tension is maintained, not just 'hey, this fight looks cool, but we cut in the middle of it, see ya next week, losers'. This also flashes out the strongest point of the anime: combat. WT is up there with Log Horizon as the 2nd most solid combat systems, with tactics that actually pay off and offset the balance of power, while still managing to show off individual characteristics. But to do this, you need time: to explain the strategy, to let it play out, change it to the field conditions, adapt etc. So obviously the action itself is going to be extremly diluted
The way the rank wars are portrayed is like a tactical shooter put in manga. It reminds me of Overwatch for the variety of powers, but with less accent on overpowered ultimate and more on the application of your skill/equipment/power like Counter Strike.
I'm surprised there hasn't been more games on world trigger
@@itsDjjayy I bet it would be a balancing nightmare.
First of all, thank you for making a video on World Trigger!
I've just got hooked because of a gameXanime collaboration, but now it's one of my favourite shounen. There are a lot of characters who are on more of a strategic side (including Osamu, the megane underdog), the combat system isn't that deep, yet has almost infinite potential. The premise, as you've said is simple, but the execution of it makes it appealing and engaging.
Also, there are so many teams, yet it doesn't feel stuffy. Each one is characteristic in its own way.
And most of all... The story blends it all in a way a reader/watcher is curious. Curious about what will happen. At least that's how it was for me.
(A side note, JinarcistGang, and ShinodacratNation are so on point 。゚( ゚^∀^゚)゚。)
I really like your video, I think you explained the universe and structure of world trigger very well and I'm glad you did. I hope world trigger gains more popularity because it really deserves it!
Amazing Video dude, I love World Trigger as well, loved seeing a video on it
this was such an awesome vid!! would love to see more but no pressure >:)
the only sad part was both the anime and manga were hit with unlucky health issues from author.
The anime had to branch off to a different storyline/arc that turned into an anime exclusive and surprisingly it had more than 24 episodes instead of the regular 12 or 24 animes nowadays.
The manga had a very long stop due to author having health issues. But when this was having a good schedule in their first year.. This was getting top in the manga rankings. And then it plummet down because it was cut off in an awkward chapter.
Good thing the anime have a legit season 2 and would probably end it on the end of the rank B wars before the neighbor expedition. And also the manga somehow is getting one chpater per month (still depending on author's health)
It sucks how the authors health o s getting worse chapter 206 was already delayed :/

I love the manga really great story and characters
Fantastic video! Loved your take and can appreciate how you share the same views as a dedicated fan!
World trigger is in all aspects amazing.
It is overlooked as generic sci-fi but what people don’t realise is that it is very unique for shonnen.
The 4 main characters do not overlap in character, they have different clearly defined motivations and difficulties.
The characters aside from the main cast is where the series truly shines, almost all other characters and super interesting and not generically bland.
It is easy to get super invested in characters like ninomiya, tachikawa, takakoma-1 squad, hyuse and even the political deadlock between the different factions in Border is amazing.
Not like typical shonnen, what HxH did well is have a basic energy like Nen and that basically allowed their characters to have extremely unique powers but it also gets absurd.
World trigger takes it to another level, when Trion level does not particularly define your level. How well you use the triggers and counter your enemy is valued higher than trion quantity.
The best quality of the show is the strategic and tactical aspect, it gets deeper and deeper. Teamwork and positioning is the most important factor to determine results.
I once head that the author actually wanted to do a sports manga but was somehow lead into doing World trigger, i guess he did get his by doing Rank-Wars and basing the combat system around sports.
If we look at it, 50-60% of the manga is tournament arc even in invasions.
The B class rank wars are basically like a sports team competing to be the away team to greater competition stage.
Yet somehow, the author still manages to build the world around the tournament arcs, the greater neighbour universe.
It’s like 3 different mangas mashed into one and somehow the good aspects overlapped and created this.
Don’t judge it by the anime quality, skip the filler arc, then s2 and s3 are honestly amazing.
I’m waiting for the last episode of s3 right now because of the god-tier animation to end the arc and then go binge the manga, if the animation wasn’t so amazing, I would’ve already read the manga by now.
I LOVE World Trigger

It's such a good video 😁
You shouldn't have to wait to see if something is worthwhile? Damn, child. Yes, sometimes you should. Manga and anime tell stories and if you need it to always grip you in a chapter or so you will leave many out because you have the attention span of a toddler and aren't worth much yourself.
And a reminder why I ignore most people's opinions on any anime or manga. Too many haven't grown up since middle school and have an attention span that matches the time it takes to pop popcorn.
Been saying it for years.
Well uh, the author outright stated that in addition to Osamu and Chika, Jin and Yuma are also main characters. Just saying, I know the narrative right now is focused on the two you focused on in this but Yuma has been hinted at getting more character development in the future
Funny you should mention that, since making this video I have actually seen this comment while covering the volume extras in my World Trigger readthrough podcast, Duckface Diaries! It definitely makes me interested to see how Yuma, and especially JIn get more focus going forward ua-cam.com/video/vMV5RikLLJY/v-deo.html&ab_channel=WensleydaleCheddar
Really ?
Yuma is the main character
He’s one of the main characters along with chika, Osamu, and jin
YAY! WORLD TRIGGER CONTENT!
In my view, World trigger’s greatest weakness (in terms of gaining popularity) is its lack of a strength. Now don’t get me wrong. I love the show. In every way, it is above average. The thing is, with most successful battle shonen, they tend to excel spectacularly in one aspect while having severe deficits in other areas. In those other shonen, there is something incredibly impressive that people can latch onto and be wowed by. Thus spreading interest as people focus on that and overlook glaring flaws. But in World Trigger, everything is around the same good quality. So while it may be an overall better package, it’s hard to point to a particular area where it’s the best at and say “if you like X. Go watch this show.”
I strongly disagree, this is the first shonen i have seen where strategy plays a huge factor. So if you like to see characters come up with good techniques and excellent team strategy go see WORLD TRIGGER!!!
you'd think this is a bigger video from a bigger channel off the video quality

Ahhhh thank you so much!
Great vid. :)
Nice videoessay!
I've noticed many westerners don't like the anime for a few reasons
1. The dub starts off pretty bad
2. Osamu is a weak MC combat wise and for whatever reason people dont like that
3. They don't give it a chance after a few episodes they drop it
this is true but I've been doing progresses to my friends suggesting animes that arent like that.
Their loss
people complain about op mc's and hate it but when you have a balanced one people complain even more
I love world trigger but should I read manga or lightnovels?
Can't say I'm aware of any WT light novels, but the manga and second season of the anime are well worth checking out!
Yeah, the way the anime was implemented ruined it for me. I just can’t get over how the anime doesn’t respect my time. There are 3 minutes worth of recap at the start of every episode that they had to push the OP further in because that’d otherwise be 4 and a half minutes before they get on with the episode.
I hate how they often linger on a frame a second or so longer than necessary with no dialogue at all. That scene with minutes long silence as the show put on a PowerPoint of all the executives’ faces pissed me off and the stupid recap episode made me drop the show entirely.
I guess I’ll give the manga a chance.
If you like it just come back to watch S2. It's on another level compare to S1.
just read the manga lmao
@@yoongitrash2699 The manga is far better at pacing… when they actually come out. Chapter 117 came out November. This mangaka and Toei are a perfect fit, lol.
Yall have any recommended manga like this. Im also reading this and waiting patiently but dammnn i need some new manga ,
'Kaiju no.8' also follows a character in a military organisation that fights monster-like threats. It's more action-heavy than WT but the world-building is pretty strong!

Is there a shounen that isn't a love letter to Underdogs? Any even remotely popular anime is usually a love letter to the "underdogs".
Off the top of my head, Seven Deadly Sins, One Punch Man, several parts of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure either don't go out of their way frame the protagonists as underdogs or flat-out treat them as overdogs
