But "some people" keep telling me that these Baofengs are just Cheap Chinese junk, and they cant receive anything. Now i'm confuckeld.
They’re the most amazing radio tool ever to grace us and I won’t hear any different.
What?! Randy! I love it when two channels I sub to have a crossover in the comments 💪🏼
I have just bought uv-5R but when entering frequency say 455.550 it say cancelled when input 0 on the end,is the radio set wrong, sorry completely new to this
It's amazing what replacing the antenna will improve - both Tx and Rx. I've heard they can vary by model, but the handful of variants I've bought have all been very capable.
In the back country where there's no cell signal, they've helped us coordinate medical assistance and keep groups informed of each others' location and needs.
The goodness ratio to dollar spend is insane. You get a lot for a very decent price.
Wow, the list even contains Manston! Its local to me and still has helicopters going in and out often, can't wait to listen along.
For all you Baofeng lovers I spent a few hours working out the extra wide and frequencies on UV-5R for 70cm and 2m. 129.000-178.997Mhz 390.000-528.997Mhz this is far as they go which can RX and TX. If anyone finds out these work on other frequencies please let me know. A like or thanks is good enough credit for me
Enjoy 😊
Great work. Worked perfectly on my baofeng.
Upvoted and subscribed😃
Is there any way for it to work on 122.9Mhz? That’s my local fields CTAF frequency
Yes Tehy Do Work And They Tranceive On From 130.000MHz , Not Only Receive
Hey - sorry but what does this mean please? (amature here!)
I have a Baofeng UV-82. It can tranceive from 126.000.
Thanks for the reminder of there is more to radio than just talking. Here in the states you can listen very easily on FM for approach (VHF) and ground stuff (UHF). Thanks for the Frequencies!!!
Can you help me with how to find those frequencies?
Uv-17 pro supports those frequencies for Rx. AM 108 to 130 MHz.
This helped me out so much cheers buddy I’ve had my UV5R for a month and not been able to listen to anything on it at all and I’ve watched this and straight away been able to listen to the Birmingham airport control I’m 15 miles away and picking up clear voices
I’m in Birmingham and I use various handhelds to listen to the UHF relay, it does come through really clear and you can get the signal for miles out.
What is the frequency now as I live about the same amount of miles away , cannot get a signal
@@dutchbeef8920any frequency i could use please as aint picking anything up
@@ng220775455.475 for Birmingham & 455.525 for EMA
Just bought one of these for when near the airport watching stuff land while having my usual weekend chippy, I miss not hearing what's coming from from the FM days, thanks mate!
My first radio arrived today. A Baofeng, on your recommendation. This video was really useful, thanks. Wish there were other step by steps as clear as this but I guess it's not possible to cover every eventuality.
A helpful vid, cheers. The quasheng UV-K5 is a good shout for listening to aircraft on AM.
Can confirm hadn’t charged my UV-5R for 4 years until I randomly grabbed it and used it for 2 days straight batteries are amazing
Mate, gotta tell you. I've kinda wandered into this world a wee bit by accident (long story... 😂), and now in possession of a pair of Baofengs. You're videos have been such a help the past week or so, so you now got a new subscriber, albeit a nursery school-level one. Look forward to working my way through your content, and sincere thanks Lewis 👍🏴
Good video Lewis ! Here in the U.S. I'm too far away from the International Airport to even try to receive simulcasts. But I never knew about this before
Cheers thanks for letting me know and everyone else. Just got a juc jut which is great and basically saying radio cheers again for all your work and hope you still are looking at your site. Alan s . AKA Nightowl from Luton 🇬🇧💯👍
Excellent, finally I don't have to carry two radios, :-) Good tips for the Baofeng Radio. 👍
Any responsible person would never consider transmitting on any frequency used by air traffic, even if it is for ground operations. Your videos are entertaining and full of good, wonderful information. Thank-you for all your hard work and exceptional videos. I am sure I talk for many others. :-)).
A lot of research and time must go into your videos, it is a lot of hard work, which I am sure others appreciate as well. :-) 😎
I'm just a few miles from Teesside Airport so this info is very handy, thanks.
shots fired at Andy hahaha, good information on the frequencies cheers Lewis
If you set a channel to a duplex setting of off in Chirp it will disable transmit. A very good safety precaution.

I use to stay next to Glasgow airport around 13 miles from there and had and old hifi radio that use to pick up the air raido
I'm in Harrow and am picking Heathrow airport and aircraft comms! Amazing! From my bedroom! It's on 455.550 - thank you!
Purchased the moonraker mrm 100 the only yesterday and will have to test it on my local
I can confirm no CTSS tones at Birmingham Airport.
Very interesting Lewis, thank you for taking the time to make your videos! I didn't know about this topic so thank you 🍻
Firstly, thanks for this, can you please confirm the ground relay for stansted please? I have managed to pick up Luton airport very clearly but really want to get the frequency for Stansted Which is so far, eluding me ... Thanks again
Hi Ringway Manchester,
I’ve just bought an E-SYNIC (same as Baofeng) UV-5R to listen to Liverpool ATC on a repeater. I’ve typed in the frequency however I just hear static. I live about 13 miles (as the crow flies from LPL - is this too far to listen to the uplink repeater? Please can you advise? Thanks
Hiya mate!
If you don’t mind me asking do you know the freq for Fairford approach?
Brilliant Lewis. Thanks for sharing 👍. Desperately trying to get into this and using it alongside flight radar..I'm on the Gatwick flightpath!
There are several resources for finding out what frequencies are being used.
The US and Canada both publish Air Field directories and approach plates that list applicable frequencies as do maps.
Air Nav is an excellent online resource as well.
And nope you no don’t want to transmit and interfere with aircraft. operations.
The FAA in the US takes a really dim view of that
Cheers for your help that’s great information thank you so much Alan England 👍
What tri-band aerial would you recommend for the uv5r ? thanks great video, can already hear conversations from about 8 miles away
Thanks for the video. How would one go about finding these frequencies to listen to in the US?
Does this work in the US? How can I find the frequencies? Thank you, and great video!
This is such a cheap and effective way of getting into air band listening
Baofs are FM not AM don't see how...will carry on watching..aha 455.550 MHz FM.. Thanks for this, you're definitely the dude!!!😊❤️✈️
Please do…..
Lol it normally helps, thanks again for loads of fascinating vids😊
Ringway Manchester is absolutely right, you can listen to airport activity in the UHF part of the band
@@qrphfradio7753I get EGCC On 455.7625
I was unaware of this! Learn something new everyday!! I wonder if military bases operate similarly? I'm not too far from RAF valley!
Military don’t use this mate
Military use 408 to 413 mhz mostly they don't usually repeater air coms but you'll find crash truck, refuel, raf police, and a tower to units on live side channel like raf Northolt on409. 9 been that 25 years
So if u out looking raf bases communications not all 408 409 arwas with 192.8 hz ctcss everywhere, army and navy use gnd freqs as well! Some at same band some at 430 to 440 mhz
And usaf too but most p25 enc though, at fairford ocassionaly 432 mhz repeaters paired with 407, sometimes in clear p25 but usually not
For freqs look at uk scanning directory edition 9 we published lots of CAA 455 and military Base stuff too, yes sone things have changed of course but done are very much still in use but if course some 455 are dmr as well now
I actually find the English voice very helpful because when switching between some modes it tells you if you have the voice on and those I use it to know status. I have found no other way to know exactly what is going on without using voice guide there’s several settings that have no indicator that have no lights or any visual indicators that I know of. If there’s visual indicators please let me know because I would be surprised. The main one I use it for is to determine if im in frequency or channel mode. Is there another way anyone? Thanks for any advice. But I don’t see any indication so I leave the voice on so I know what mode im in.
Great work Lewis keep it up. I don't drive fast just put foot on floor lol
I bought an X3 Plus because of the follow-up video! 🍻
Another great video, thank you for all your time and effort. Your videos are always well worth looking at and I look forward to more.
Thanks Lewis. I will have to have a listen on high ground next week.
I go to the RIAT airshow yearly, will i be able to pick up the frequencies there?
No mate
@@RingwayManchester Any scanners under the £50 mark that will be suitable? :) thanks for your help
Uniden ubc-75 will do it! I’ll be taking my 125 to RIAT
Yes u will there's an extensive 444 mha and 455 mhz and other freqs, they've migrated more to dmr enc from dmr and befire that ctcss but I'm led yo believe some are still there and lots at riat will be on those again all current 455 are licensed to rafbf and in uk government database avaliable to public, but the 444 are only for the event using mod freqs
@@RingwayManchesterbetter to take a dmr radio scanner as some of the links 455 453, and 444 last year were in clear but more and more each year enc
Thanks for sharing! Does anyone know the repeater frequencies for Southampton airport? Thanks
Thanks for sharing another informative video Lewis... keep them coming cheers.
What's the range of the transmission from airports roughly?
I’ve seen claims of 35 miles, I can get the Birmingham Airport frequency at the top of Birmingham Library. It all depends obviously what is between you and the airport though.
Thanks cuse I am going to aberdeen tomorrow and I want to here atc and aircraft
would this be able to listen to ATC? The frequency is 125MHz?
Whenever I put in the frequency of my airport (Zaventem Airport Brussels, Belgium) it just dissapears and returns to any other frequency I put in randomly before. Can you please help and tell me why my input frequency just pops away and gets ignored by the Baofeng? I would love to hear the ATC and pilots, they fly pretty low over my house after departing Brussels sometimes.
What frequency is it?
@@RingwayManchester the same thing happened to me and my frequency is 127.450 in Raleigh North Carolina, USA
Another Great video by a Great man. Thanks for this kind info. Uv-5r is the best. Love you from Pakistan
Thanks brother
For me these are a no go, my home airport in Venezuela has from 118.4 to 132.95mhz :c
I wonder if US airports have UHF up-links too? Never heard of it before, so now another rabbit hole to go down!
Cant get airband on this i got something about they changed the frequency on these so no no airband on them now
I don't have a Baofeng but over the years I have programmed many UHF radios to listen to these UHF freqs. I always programmed rx only when possible and
if that was not available I programmed the tx to a "safe" frequency 446 or a ham freq. Inadvertent PTT press or equipment fault can occur.
They look so much nicer than those camo ar 152 you covered the other day...cheers bud.
Cheers for that a have pint.
Holding a full charge for how long?
What is that in channels as I have 12 channels on my radio and no numbers
Interesting! Just wondering. In Europe, When you change the language from Chinese to English, does the radio have an British Accent?
It sounds like a fake American accent ಠ_ಠ
@@ByteMash LOl... Yes, that is true! 😂🤣
Chinglish
Lewis, think it's time we get an update on Your pals Boafeng addiction , hope he's not relapsed ?/
Ring way manches this cool to listen to the air band
I need your HELP. I got a radio and I dont know where to find the frequency for my Aerodrome.( Waggawagga - YSWG)
I only know UK
I have a radio and I have the frequency on for the airport and it has been lowered and I don’t hear anything
Hi there, loved your channel! I have a UV5R too, do you know the frequency around London for weather updates etc? I have mine tuned to HTRW but as a drone pilot im more interested in the constant weather update system...
There isn’t a uhf one that I know of
@@RingwayManchester Thanks mate great content followed you on IG too...
I live in canada, so I’m sure they aren’t the same frequencies, but can you give me a tip or two on how to find them? You said it took you years compiling those, so it doesn’t sound like a straight forward thing.
I've unlocked my Baofeng UV-S9 so it goes from 100MHz to 999MHz. Bearing in mind it isn't perfect and can only transmit between certain ranges without losing PLL lock (and outputting additional harmonics outside of its filtered range). I've managed to pick up things that it isn't usually able to receive in other bands.
The reason I hacked it is because the official software broke the tri-band functionality. 😂
You haven't hacked it. You've used Chirp to open it right up. I spent hours finding the extra bandwidth on either side for 70cm and 2m. I will post the Wide banded frequencies in normal comments of this video.
@@hackerhacker8578 hey how do I do this? I have a Baofeng UV-5R can I make it to where I can tune into 122.9Mhz for my local fields CTAF frequency? Or even if i have to get a different radio, I’d still like to know. I’d rather not spend $300 on an airband radio if I’m not using it for transmissions, only reception.
@@d_kortman Get a Wouxun 10 watt KG-UV9H (no, the part number isn't a typo) and get actual AM Aircraft reception instead of hoping your local airport sets up an FM repeater.
How plz
Is this through chirp?
I’ve been driving up to airports, sitting in my car (most have a small car park for plane spotters etc) and listening to their UHF repeaters for a while now as a sort of hobby. Google tells me it’s actually illigal because it’s not intended for public listening. Is this correct? Am I breaking the law?
Officially it's illegal yes, however, hundreds of people do it, and provided you only listen and don't transmit, they really don't mind. People have stood next to police officers doing it and the police haven't said a word.
Tienes información si en Argentina, Uruguay o Chile utilizar esa banda de frecuencias?
Hiya can you tell me where i can buy the moonraker antenna..thanks
Hi, can i have some advise please, just got a UV-5RIII with the two standard antennas, I live a stone throw away from EGSS approach near your old mate AndyK. Ive tuned into the FM repeater on 455.550 and can only hear STN ground. was thinking i may hear the aircraft when they go onto tower via the repeater? should be able to pick up both ends of any coms on tower feq via the repeater as both ends are clear on the ground?? Appreciate your time and videos. Would a different antenna help or do you think its just how the repeater is set up at Stansted?
Hi, Harwarden airport is shown as 455.7, would that be 455.700, thanks.
Indeed it would
is it possible to do with onn radios?
Mine does AM and I can listen to my local airfield 😈
Which model do you have? I really want to do this and I don’t want to spend like $200 on an airband radio. The only reason I want it is to listen to my local airfield traffic which is only 122.9
I have a baofeng UV-5R. Will it work with that or do I need a different model?
@@d_kortman yes I understand I didn't want to spend $200 either get a sdr you can listen to every band and it cost no more then $50
@@keekdachoseone7 SDR? What’s that
@@keekdachoseone7sdr is great but bit inconvenient to carry with you, this is where cheap handhelds are great
How do you use am ?
hey mate, do you know if it can be used to listen to RAF base frequencies? I am planning on going to RAF coningsby and it would be nice to be able to listen to the aircraft
Hi nathan no, only the civilian uhf uplinks. Military bases don’t use these. Hope that helps
@@RingwayManchester cool, thank you.
You can use a regular scanner to get military comms. A cheap one that can get to air band is the Uniden 33XLT
@@RingwayManchesterthey use 409 mhz but those are refuel, maintenance, squadron, and usually a twr to vehicles freq u know it's raf on 409 are if tone is 192.8 hz
Other military users there don't use the 192.8 hz or I've never found any on there
The famous Shoreham airport is close to me. I hope I can pick them up.
They don't have a repeater but last 40 years 169.275 fm, which when an incident happens as wiyh many airfield they immediately switch in tower
On 169.275 atc, crash etc
Do you know if this type of service exist in the U.S. ?
It exists in any country where flights are operating.
Is it true that if there was a Internet black out of sorts only ham radios would be able to operate?.
so are the transmitters illegal?
Great vid as always Lewis! Ps I've just bought the Moonraker MRM-100P antenna to test with my new CRT Electro as featured in your recent video. 73 Rob
God speed Lewis!
Nice new fast car 🚗 💨. 🚓
Thanks the Blackpool one works just not that busy.
Am i allowed to listen while on an airplane?
Thanks for the informative video. I was under the mistaken impression that aircraft communicate using AM modulation. I will go out and try this out. Have you considered making a video on listening to marine VHF/UHF? I know there are dedicated marine radios, but I would just like to listen in on my Baofeng or similar HT.
Aircraft do use AM. If you listen carefully to the video, there is a UHF fm repeater.
If you Download (Free) the chirp programming software - the marine frequencies are in the list - I have the commercial frequencies (business lite) and marine programmed
I had no idea... Thanks for this info.
Whats fm and and am.mode plz
Great video Lewis. Nicely done and well said. No don't do a video on fast cars lol.

Do you need to be near to the airport?
It’s a funny question really. Ideal yes. But you can receive these frequencies from miles away depending on terrain. I’m 12 miles away and receive it perfectly
@@RingwayManchester Thank you for your reply, I'm 18 miles from my local airport but can't pick it up, would this be because I still have the standard aerial that comes with the uv-5r? Would you recommend I buy a much longer aerial?
Hmm it’s a bit fat mate, which airport?

Is it legal?
Great radio sets
Nice video bud!!
Good video, as always. 👍
Superb 👍🏼
Top 🔝 class video
Music by Andy Tindersby? 🤣
Worth noting that the am transmissions are relayed to the uhf side as well as the ground staff using uhf being relayed back to am
Also the fm side can be turned off for whatever reason, and also gets switched off when ground control is closed (night time and weekends)
My local airport relays it's Tower frequency over DMR, it sounds dreadful.
I've hacked my uv-5r to listen to airband radio, can't hear much tho since it's AM.
All I heard was “go out and speed”
Do they have repeaters like this in the United States? Little repeat these frequencies on UHL?
