    The tone on that guitar is just absolute perfection. I know a lot of people can't get past the price of genuine 58-60' bursts and somehow go down this blind alley where the price difference between the real thing and a reissue is just down to tone and therefore is completely unjustified. Which of course isn't the case at all. The astronomic price of real bursts is down to rarity and their almost mythical association with the golden age of rock music. Is the price justified? Well, if that's what people will pay then, yes, it's justified.
    Now, about the tone: yes, it is better than a reissue. Much, much better. Now, having said that, will today's reissues sound that good in 50 plus years? Maybe...but I doubt it.
    IMHO when Gibson tightened up the standards on its production processes starting in the early 60's some of the magic was irretrievably lost. So, yes, it's great that every pickup now falls within a tightly defined range of parameters, and, yes that means that you get far fewer dogs. But it also means you don't get a 'Beast' anymore. You don't get a Pearly Gates anymore. And you don't get a guitar like the one in this video anymore.

      It doesn’t sound “much” better than a reissue. That’s just built into people’s heads romantically.

    The biggest difference I always hear with real 59's is that their neck pickup sounds and both pickup sounds are never muddy and have a clarity that the newest ones can't seem to replicate. Is it just me? The best bang for the buck from Gibson now is the traditional, the Standards are hollowed out trash.

    • @metalmulisha0143
      @metalmulisha0143 5 років тому +1

      And the bridge pickup has all the high end you'd ever want without being harsh... They're a bit unique, it's not bs that they're so revered

    • @mikeimmonen6619
      @mikeimmonen6619 4 роки тому +1

      Damn straight. Les paul traditionals capture that 59 feel really well. Especially when you swap out the shitty gibson pickups for aftermarket paf style pickups

    • @MustangDesudiroz
      @MustangDesudiroz 4 роки тому +2

      True. It cant be replicated

    • @duffman18
      @duffman18 2 роки тому +1

      You can buy replacement after market humbuckers that are made exactly the same way as the original PAFs, as opposed to the modern Gibson humbucker. Look at pickup companies like Lollar or the Creamery or Bare Knuckle pickups. They handwind them. And they are to the exact same specification and materials as the original 50s PAFs. They aren't cheap. But hey you could get an Epiphone because they play just as good as the Gibsons, these days, and put in some of these vintage style handwound PAF style humbuckers, and instantly sound miles better than any modern stock Gibson

    • @SDPickups
      @SDPickups 2 роки тому +1

      Yes vintage PAF's in neck position are way more clear than anything Gibson made since then. But its NOT impossible to get that kind of tone for me personally, because I spent 20 years reverse-engineering PAF's and I know WHY they are so clear, and can get about 98% of what they do. There are physics reasons, and materials reasons for that. The hobby "winders" will never figure it out because they're all using commercial parts from the big parts sellers, and none of those parts are what was ever found in any vintage PAF. Not only that their bobbins are also wrong, the wire they use is wrong. These kinds of pickup "makers" simply won't do any actual science work, they just want to wind Lego parts and say its their design, when the design is already done in the materials and physical geometry that was done for them. A big part of this tone in this video is from the amp. Obviously is not a modern and has no gain buttons or master volume, you just turn it up all the way. Speakers too. So, these are just words I'm writing here and are not proof, so I offer one of my many YT demo videos using REAL vintage PAF's and my recreations of them. This particular video was an experiment to see how close I could get to reproducing a single vintage PAF set as close as possible. Both pickups are from 1959 and were from a 1959 Black Beauty. The legs on them were cut off so the only restoration I did was put functionging legs, so they are not rewinds. I named the replica set after the guitar, so these are the "HD Black Beauty" PAF replica set. Take a listen. I have many similar videos if you want to learn details about vintage PAF's and some other vintage pickups I recreate:

    Judging by all the comments here, I think it would be safe to say that no two Les Pauls sound exactly the same. Some good, great even like shit. I've got a '16 Trad that sounds like a real 50s LP. IDK, maybe its the way I set up my amp because it sounds different through different ones that I have. Anyway, Greg can make anything sound like a million bucks, for sure. Been following him for the past 10 years and he just gets better, like fine wine.

    • @byderxxder1932

      I as well have a 16 traditional which can get me any tone I would ever want and need(it can also achieve the tone Slash uses in AFD) but you are right no Gibson ,or any guitar in general, sound the same and that is what makes guitar playing so fun and adventurous!

  • @Neeeyo

    The A chord he plays at the :55 mark is what consistently distinguishes an original '59 from a reissue or replica.

    The Big Koch is always great and I must say his tone is way better here than any of the Wildwood demos where those guitars always sound thinner and weaker than they actually are. Here factor a Friedman Dirty Shirley into the equation... it's VALVE overdrive we are mostly hearing and actually a good EQ on the recording. The Burst wouldn't be able to be AB blindfold tested against say a Brazilian '18 R9 with Tom Homes pickups or Throbaks into the same Amp mic signal chain.

    • @kanga-blue
      @kanga-blue Рік тому

      @Daniel Laurence untrue. What's your actual ownership reference? I personally have 1960s PAF, 63 Patent number, '17 R0, '18 R9 Braz, Virgil Arlo etc and TH and Throbak get pretty close as close as say a different vintage PAF which as you may know can vary widely. To say they are a joke is a joke.

Four years later we had our second child, so I figured that was it for electric guitars. So I sold mine, still prime condition, for $500. IT seems that guitar would now be worth over half a million bucks. Who knew?

      Try Throback Electronics. They cost a very steep price but they are as close to an original PAF as humanly possible (they’re made using the original winding machine used to wind the originals). Contrary to popular belief, original PAFs were not wound by hand, but on this specific machine. The thing that made the variations between different ones was the number of winds on each bobbin and the pattern of the winds on both, as well as the specific Alnico magnet that was used. Different employees at Gibson would set the winding machines different or not stop them at the same consistent point which is what caused old Les Pauls to all sound different to each other. This is where Throback has nailed it, as they’ve scrutinized the pattern of winds on each bobbin of the very best sounding PAFs of the period and recreated it exactly on their pickups. Other companies get close (Wizz, Ox4, Bare Knuckle, etc.) but without that exact method no one can properly nail that tone by winding the pickups simply by hand.

    • @Dagger_323
      @Dagger_323 3 роки тому

      @justin. y Gibson ‘57 Classics couldn’t be more different to any real set of PAFs if they wanted to. ‘Burstbuckers are closer yet still not right. Even Gibson’s closest modern attempt at replicating that sound (the Custom Bucker) sounds nowhere in the ballpark of an actual PAF. I’ve probably tried several dozen repros over the years from various companies and I’ve only ever come across two that truly nail that sound: ThroBak and Stephen’s Design. Nothing else does, including Seymour Duncan.
      I own four sets of real PAFs/Patent Numbers, so I’ve been able to compare them to numerous repros to determine what’s accurate. Contrary to popular belief, there isn’t the massive variation in those vintage pups that everyone claims there is. While it’s true they all have their own unique “voice”, they all maintain a very distinct tonal character which is consistent to real PAFs that nearly every single repro (except the two I mentioned) gets wrong.

    The old ones resonate better for sure...think about that wood really dried out now moisture content aged magnets mellow it...the thing will growl for sure especially with a good tube amp...yes they are a rare breed and coveted.....but regular guys like most can’t own one now....but watching Greg play one is awesome.🙂🎸

    I bet he thinks "well, pretty cool LP, better then some, worse then the others I have tried". There's nothing apart from the legend that makes these more valuable then other vintage LPs.

      Rarity is certainly a contributing factor in terms of the monetary value of '59s. It's certainly not just ''legend'', as you put it.

    Why doesn't anyone know what pickups are used in these things today enough to build them again? Are all the engineers dead? No record keeping? What the hell?!

    • @lptomtom

      What? Every single component of these guitars is known perfectly, and they've been remade countless times. What makes them so valuable is scarcity and legend, not the way they're made.

      I did all that. Going into my 17th year now. The reason you don't hear much about me is I don't mass produce. In order to replicate vintage PAF's you can't use bulk materials or you end up with trash. Steel varies from every different mill and steel varies from every different batch. We did 6 years of industrial-mentored analyses and studies on every pickup model Gibson made from 1937-1977. And Elektrisola Wire Corp, did analyses and studies on wire from all those pickups. The reasons these old pickups sound that way are pretty complex, but they can be reproduced about 97% if you understand the materials and engineering. I have an article I wrote in Burst Believers II and this recent article to goes into depth of what my reverse-engineering trip involved. Also search here on UA-cam for SDPICKUPS and you'll see me compare real vintage PAF's from all years vs. my replicas. The article is here:

      No, this is not really true. Gibson does a pretty bad job of recreating actual vintage Les Pauls. Most of the hardware they are using is completely wrong vs. what was on real vintage LP's. It makes a HUGE difference if you correct their mistakes. Vintage LP's had brass bridge posts and thumbwheels, Gibson is using STEEL. Steel deadens tone, brass gives you chime and beautiful acoustic sounds. Vintage LP's had LONG stop bar inserts of steel and long steel stud bolts. Gibson uses SHORT for both. Huge difference in sustain if you change your guitar to correct long parts in steel. Vintage used aluminum super light weight stop bars, this is a chimey acoustic sounding material, not sure what Gibson is using now, most companies use pot metal which does add sustain but not beautiful tones. The ABR1's are a total disaster, no one makes one that sounds like the real thing, no one. The reason is that the body material is a certain zinc alloy and all the companies are using the wrong version. Brass saddles were used also, most use that but vintage was a specific brass alloy, I haven't destroyed my vintage ABR1 to find out what alloy it was but I did do this the posts and wheels, they probably used that alloy. All the same goes for the harness. Most purist LP guys completely replace the Gibson harnesses with good audio taper CTS vintage taper pots, and real paper in oil tone caps and better braided wire than I've seen in Gibsons I've worked on. I have several customers who have done all of these changes and are completely blown away by their guitars now. Gibson's pickups have never recreated original PAF's and they've made no real attempt to do so. But then no one I know ever has either, but I did, beginning 17 years ago...

      Robert Wilson III I think it is just a combination of all of the parts. Woods, construction techniques (handmade), aging seems to help the character out some, players that also tend to have the opportunity to play a guitar of this age and caliber have learned tone taste, are handed a 1959 Paul always professionally setup and cared for properly and don't put it through a shitstorm of circuitry when they play it. If you gave that guitar to a kid and his shitty amp and shitty pedals it would sound like? right! This is the holy grail that Gibson will never let go of and that they will continue to charge more and more for the chance to say you are close but yet so far.....

    • @dawsonhooker7480
      @dawsonhooker7480 7 років тому

      soapboxearth i mean in there defense. The mahogany Gibson used in the 50s was hundreds of years old. Had more time to dry out which allows the wood to breathe and resonate. That's a proven fact. But The difference between like maple and mahogany ? I don't buy into that.

    • @letsgooo1637
      @letsgooo1637 7 років тому

      Dawson Hooker i dont buy in the breathing part neither. some wood resonate more than others that's proven, butif anything in an electric guitar the only audio difference could be sustain. everything else comes from the pickups

    • @FreewayJammin
      @FreewayJammin 6 років тому

      Actually the proven fact is that wood doesn't / can't "breathe". Just another guitar forum 'buzzword' that people think makes them look like they know what they're talkin bout, when the reality is its the opposite.
      Whats hilarious is you follow up by saying the difference between Mahogany and Maple is something you don't buy into !! smh......

    • @enorbet2
      @enorbet2 5 років тому

      @ soapboxearth...and you even have a variety of replies from some who imagine tonewood makes no difference, which I find absurd. Hey guys... have you ever seen those tuners that clamp to the headstock? Isn't it obvious the neck vibrates in resonance? How 'bout the body? Can you not feel that it vibrates too? If it's all about the pickups why do hollow body, semi-hollow, and solid body (not to mention flat versus carved top guitars) sound different? Look, any frequencies absorbed by the wood (or metal cone on dobro-like guitars) and hardware means some lesser amount of that energy stay in the strings to be picked up magnetically and reach the amp. Also, many pups are at least slightly microphonic and they will pickup some of those resonant vibrations off the wood. Yes LOTS of things are part of why individual guitars sound how they do and wood is one of them. Seen any 1/2 million dollar Dan Armstrong or Steinberger guitars lately?
