Collecting sucks!! I remember seeing a vintage Les Paul locked away in a glass cab!! I actually got to play it for a bit and it sounded so good!!! I was like, damn!! that needs to be in the studio or on a stage!!! not left in a cabinet to be looked at!! built to be played I say
In the not too far off future these guitars will be used as commodities values in the 20 to 25 million dollars only famous people will be allowed to borrow them for sessions and concerts. That's just how it happens. It happens look at the Stradivarius violins. You may think I don't know what I'm talking about but the market is showing just that. More people want a classic guitar than a classic violin. 1958 to now wasn't that long ago. 1970s prices to 1980s prices 1980s prices to 1990s prices so on and so on. Eventually you come to the 20 to 25 million dollar price there are even greater factors fires floods neglect all these losses. If I was a billionaire I would try and corner the market and buy everything Gibson and fender from the 50 to the 70s. I think a lot of guitars built today don't have something the older ones had. Also it make guitar companies build better instruments. I'm only saying this as a business sense. If someone can build a current guitar with a coup d'etat today then those old Gibson's will have no value but thats not happening age and paying is a factor it can't have from the Luther.
Yeah, Rock Candy baby, hard sweet and sticky! Just watched every demo on the reissue I can find and no one played any Montrose on them. Nice to find this on the original, I was waiting for Space Station #5!
Remember though each neck back then was individually carved. I've played several 58s and 59s (unfortunately not owning one but my mate works in Denmark St vintage store) and they vary from baseball to almost 60 taper! Lovely guitar here ... aren't they all? Makes me consider pushing the missus down the stairs and getting the life insurance .... mmmm. I'll blame Guitar Point!
It's amazing to me that Gibson made these huge baseball bat necks on all their modern takes like the CC 28 but, in real life vintage necks were never, ever that chunky. When you turn it up though, nothing sounds like a real burst. It's gotta be the body wood and those amazing pickups.
The necks were all over the place . There were some chuncky ones they just were not all chunky. They were hand made necks and some got shaved down more the others if there were no chucnky ones then jimmu page would not have 2 59s with shaved necks. Joe walsh had number one shaved down before he sold it to page then page bought a second one and had the neck shaved to match. So the were some thick enough that people would have then shaved down. I have some quite a few famous guitar players who have played and owned many who have stayed that there were thin necks and very fat ones .
That guitar definitely has the vibe for sure. I'll take issue with one statement you made, that it'd probably sound good through a transistor radio. So here's the deal, ship me the guitar to play through the transistor set up... I'll send you a report later on to let you know how the guitar sounds.
So many theories about what happened to the original '58 that Ronnie had. Most famously now was that Ronnie saw a photo of Gary Moore with a Les Paul and was convinced that the guitar was actually his '58! Another theory was that the theft might have involved someone from a certain former band/artist that he once played for. Of course, we might never know the full story behind it. RIP Ronnie Montrose, RIP Gary Moore, and RIP J. Geils.
Gruss Berndt
Had a Vox. Yawn! No balls! Also a Fender Dual Showman. Basically an early Fender Reverb, without the reverb. Irritated the neighbors for years with that!
no this isn't the guitar.. they wouldn't be reviewing it here if they knew it was stolen and returned it to the rightful owner.. the guitar that was stolen was passed along thru different owners and ended up in Gary Moore's hands and he held on to it til his last day.. it is not known who has the guitar now that both Ronnie and Gary are no longer with us..
You spent all this time talking about how great these old instruments are instead of playing the thing. We -know- they are good. Stop talking and start picking.
This guitar was stolen from Ronnie and he spent considerable time and resources to get it back. It's a shame he was never able to play his favorite guitar again.
Lance do your homework before you start posting things like this! The stolen Ronnie Montrose burst was his 1959 (which ended up in the stash of Gary Moore) and not this one...See also several posts below here
Isn't this the guitar that was STOLEN off the stage from Ronnie Montrose? In a Vintage Guitar interview, Ronnie sad he had spent his LIFE trying to recover this axe. What's the story? It would be a shame that someone would be making money off Ronnie's cherished, stolen instrument.
I would play that guitar every single day for the rest of my life.
@Kameron Gregory how on earth did that conversation took that turn? Lol
Still probably the best demo of the holy grail 'Burst tone there is. That woody clean, and then that searing but not harsh lead.
Some of the best tone ever. Ever.
Now here's somebody with a good feel, and a real man's vibrato, playing a great guitar to match - nice when it happens.
The Sound and Tone of this guitar is amazing !
Killer tone! Amazing color.
An excellent demo. Very nicely described and great playing. Perfect tone. Many thanks.
Hello. I have a 2012` R8 that is the best. I really like the baseball bat neck. Keep on Rock`in! From Sioux City,Ia.
Very cool playing! Usually I get really bored with vintage guitar demo-ers, but you are quite the exception :D
Gibson Weasel absolutely agree
That's true I would definitely it should be played
It would be an amazing recording guitar. Maybe not take it onstage but it has beautiful voicing

that is an ideal burst tone, thick and complex, with huge lows, super responsive sounding. The 50s stuff just sounds better & plays better
finally somebody who knows what they're talking about!

Immer wieder Klasse, Eure Videos ! LES
that' s the perfect Les Paul. Brutal sound and awesome look.
My dream..
Well that thing is a treat! 🤘🏻😎🤘🏻
What a tone ??? Wow man.
Best Les Paul ever.
Amazing!!
that's the nicest sounding paul I've heard
Great sounding guitar AND amp! Great demo.
God damn that sounds good, classic combination
Beautiful
the best guitars ever.
great sound
awesome sound!
I think I need one of those Webers. That sounds phenomenal.
That is perfect! I kinda prefer the mild flame tops if I'm honest. Some of them look great but I like them just like this.
Excellent !!!
Every players dream guitar surely!

Wow. ..great !!!
Huge sounding!

that sounds awesome!!!
Great review. Wouldn't mind hearing some clean tones as well.
Sounds like a beast!!!!
yes!
WOW!
Super coooooool tone brother !
Who was the first owner after Ronnie sold it in 1979?
Cool!
That's an American guitar that needs to come home!

I want one where can I get .I can’t get it on amazon online
Tasty chops..

nice
where in Germany are you located? Anywhere near the USAF base (rammstein)?
Can anyone tell me if he's using the Weber Attenuator? I would assume so?
Thanks!
Are these worth more or the 1959?
Can I have that Paul?
Liked the video and also subscribed.
Thank you
The 58's was the only year that Gibson made the neck really fat. I played a re-issue and loved the fat neck.
Well, its does have something to do with the Rig which is cheaper than a
vintage Les Paul.
How much did I his go for? 0.11 wow!!
Top carve!!!
Yes this one definitely has the proper tone…. Great… a lot of these don’t
near by Frankfurt am Main . 2hours from Rammstein
Wich Marshall amp is he using?
69 superlead
THE guitar he played on all the Montrose stuff. Still don't know why he sold it in the late 70s? Money problems?
Wildwood Spec Les Pauls sound similar to this burst
Especially if you swap the magnets, like, its really incredible what it does to the sound.
Gibson has slimmed down the necks on the newest R8s . I have 2 very recent ones and the necks are not baseball bat necks
was kostet das Teil ?
Gruss Berndt
Why only the 50s Gibson gets played with old marshalls?
2:48 to 3:17 is killing tone.
Wasn't that guitar stolen from Ronnie Montrose.
no, it was his 59 les paul that got stolen. ive read that the late garry moore had his 59 les paul
That's what I here.
the baseball bats ARE original old necks, not all LPs had the same neck. some had baseball bats, some were slimmer.
I'm naturally drawn to the 58 because it's the lesser talked about
around 1600 were made of this bursts so nobody can imitate the sound of 70 year old mahogonie
Playing it thru a Marshall - the only way.
+ZappaBlues All HAIL Jim Marshall!!!
Had a Vox. Yawn! No balls!
Also a Fender Dual Showman. Basically an early Fender Reverb, without the reverb. Irritated the neighbors for years with that!
I'm not gonna rag on Marshall (even though they're not my personal fav amps), but LPs also sound fantastic through Hiwatts. Jimmy Page agreed.
!!!!!!

1969 superlead
58 over 59, any time
heard of google...?
That guitar is sweet hard and sticky!
Cof!
lol...young man...
You spent all this time talking about how great these old instruments are instead of playing the thing. We -know- they are good. Stop talking and start picking.
It ain’t worth much because Jimmy page didn’t play it😊
