    Mr.Pete,
Make your hole saws self oiling by drilling thru a cheap sponge and leaving the sponge core in the saw. Saturate the sponge with cutting oil and the heat from drilling warms the oil and it will run down to the cutting edge.

I would have given an arm and a leg for a South Bend Milling attachment for dads 9" SBL fifty something years ago. Instead, dad brought home a Palmgren milling attachment. What a P.O.S. it was, messed up many of a project trying to mill anything with it turned it into a challenging task. A short time later, I wound up with a worn-out no. 3 Brown & Sharp horizontal mill that I fixed up to take it's place. I still have that milling attachment, tucked away in the tooling dungeon to never be used again by me. As always, thanks for the videos, Ken

G'day Tubalcain, I set out to make 8 individual exhaust header flanges using a hole saw. The first hole took so long and was so hard that I figured the hole saw was already blunt. So I went and bought 2 more thinking that's what I would need to finish the remaining flanges. What I discovered is that as soon as you get to the depth of the teeth there is no escape route for the swarf. The swarf simply packs in between the teeth making it near impossible to feed. I found that more lube didn't help. I simply had to raise the hole saw very often in order to brush out the swarf. Having learnt that, I was able to easily finish all 8 flanges with the original hole saw!

Good Day Mr Pete, I found it is very easy to sharpen hole saws using a cutoff wheel on an angle grinder.
I mount the grinder in a vice and turn on, and gently touch the face of the tooth with the wheel. You could
also use one of those inexpensive 2-3 inch steel wheels with diamonds, but I have many grinders and it is
easier for me to use them and the cutoff wheel [4 inch one]...of course, you need to use your Bino Magnifiers
to get in close, it does seem to matter if you do not alternate the bevels....and only grind on the face of tooth...
[AND OF COURSE DO NOT PUSH HARD ON THE CUTOFF WHEEL AS YOU ARE USING THE SIDE OF THE WHEEL
AND YOU DO NOT WANT TO FLEX OR IT COULD SHATTER] I have never broken a wheel yet, but I do use a face
    shield......
I hope this helps someone, it sure makes cutting easier and you can sharpen well over ten times before the tooth
gets to small....best wishes, Paul down in Florida....

Interesting attachment. I have a Grizzley lathe that came with a milling attachment. They did it by adding a milling arm (vertically) with a separate milling motor. That way, the cross slide, and saddle feed were used to the X and Y travel. Z was achieved by raising and lowering the quill on the milling arm. It was better than nothing, sort of like the X & Y table attachment for the drill press. To you point, it lacked any sort of rigidity.

Hello Mr Pete. I enjoy your channel very much and was hoping to meet you at the Florida Flywheelers in January, but I'm not sure yet. I use hole saws to cut mild steel a fair amount. I make 5/8" plates with a 4 1/2" hole to accept axle spindles for radial stacking conveyors that a friend of mine manufactures. I usually get at least 16 plates out of each hole saw before I discard them. I discovered drilling four 1/4" holes around the cut will clear the chip & cuttings perfectly to speed up the operation and prolong the life of the hole saw. I do turn the hole saw very slow (about 60 or 70 RPM) in my Bridgeport and use lots of cutting oil. On a two inch hole I would only drill two holes 180 degrees apart. I realize this method may not always be suitable with notches left in both the center slug and the outer diameter. With the axle brackets that I make it doesn't matter because the spindles go through the hole against a shoulder and then welded both sides. I turn the spindles so they fit the hole and that leaves a 1/4" shoulder for alignment. They don't have to be perfect for low speed off road use. If a person is enlarging the hole in the lathe or by using a boring head in the mill the notches would probably be machined out anyway.

Wow and I thought I had a milling attachment for my SB 9C. Mine is an angle adapter for the compound and then there is a small vise which looks like a large tool holder that attaches to the compound T-slot through counterbored cap screw holes. LOL, these milling attachments are going for more than my lathe is worth (!) Of course I bot the miller in the 70's and have never used it yet (and I don't have a milling machine! - but I do have a sloppy Chinese drill-press X-Y table and a very heavy Chinese drill press, so there's that)

Lyle, back in my days in Bible college, one of our chapel preachers said it's scriptural to wear both a belt and suspenders. His proof text was Ecclesiastes 4:9-10, which says, Two are better than one; because they have a good reward for their labour.
10 For if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow: but woe to him that is alone when he falleth; for he hath not another to help him up.

Looks like another project for my Heavy 10" South Bend.
Not Only does it give you Extra Travel, but if turned 90° to the cross slide it would also move the centerline of the Milling Attachment back over the Cross Slide cutting down on the Excessive Overhang.
Along with making one with the 1 1/2" offset as shown, I might actually make one closer to 4 inches offset Just For That Very Reason, as my ways are worn enough there's only so much adjusting I can do on the gib to tighten it up mid-travel without binding at the ends. With the amount of overhang the Milling Attachment has, it TILTS Over Big Time when making all but the lightest of cuts.

Great video, , but can I give you a tip, with the use of holesaws, first drill the centre hole ,then fit the holesaw and connect drilling , but just scribe a circle with the holesaw, then stop and remove the holesaw, then chuck a bout a 1/4 drill bit and drill 3 or 4 holes on your holesaw scribed circle , but the centre of the drill is centred towards the inside of the scribed circle so the 1/4 hole doesn't cut through the Max diameter of the holesaw circle, then refit the holesaw and finish the hole, the 1/4 holes gives somewhere for the chips to go and not clog the holesaw cut, woke great on thick plate ie

I wonder if it would have made the vice more useful if it had the same mounting system as the base?

Beautiful job done Mr. Pete. But there is something didn't make sense to me! There is nothing to hold the offset base down to the cross slide. The only connection was the shrink fit between the dovetail and the bore, and the cutting force during milling might kick the offset base out!

Yes, I may add the two hold down bolts. But more than likely, I will never use the thing since I have three milling machines, lol.

So now I know the purpose of that mysterious dovetail plug that came with the Logan lathe I inherited many years ago. Missing is the 1/2 plate with two holes.

Consider it an extra for the 2 that hold the compound.

I have always enjoyed your videos.
Had you considered putting a couple Dutchmans in to hold the dovetail piece in the base? A couple 1/4-20 set screws would be a quick easy fix.

Couldn't you have put a boring bar in the lathe and used the milling attachment to bore the holes? That's what it's for isn't it? Of course, that would make for a long video.
Actually I thought the milling attachment had enough jaw movement that you could put that plate in there, but it looks like that's not the case.

The original milling head was held to the cross slide with 2 horizonal bolts into the dovetail and 2 more vertically into the back of the slide but the adapter is only connected to the cross slide with 2 horizontal bolts into the dovetail? Do you see any issues with rigidity?
Your boring bar looks like it could benefit from a chip breaker ground into the face of the carbide. Should help keep long stringers from marring the bored hole. Can also increase the nose radius to improve surface finish. I'm an old toolmaker, love your videos and learn something new once in while watching them.

28:27 "...for the four of you that stayed with me..." As of this comment, I'm sure that at least 6,000 of us (including me, of course) were still watching to find out how you held that awkward piece in the mill. I expect the extra credit to be reflected in the grade on my report card at the end of the semester.

This would be a great project for me except I don't have a milling machine, just a milling attachment on my lathe.

I have found that a STEADY stream of cutting oil speeds up the hole sawing a lot.

Wow I have one of those milling attachments that came with my lathe that I just bought. Now I wish I had a mill? Lol😢
