I’d really encourage you to do a series on the shaper restoration. I’ve picked up a lot of general machining knowledge as well as tips and tricks watching restoration videos as one never knows what unique challenges will be revealed during the course of a restoration. While I’m at it, I want to thank you for the many videos you’ve posted, they’ve been very helpful in advancing the state of my knowledge. I’m in the process of building a small workshop and am going to to purchase a lathe, a mill and a band saw, maybe a small shaper, so nearly everything you post is quite helpful to me. I especially am grateful for your emphasis on shop safety, we will never know for sure, but you will probably be responsible for me keeping my fingers well attached to my body and my eyes still working as God intended them to.

Mr Pete, please, please keep this series going. I love shapers but I don't have enough room in my tiny workshop for anything bigger than the small Adept hand operated shapers. Watching you restore this one will be absolute magic 👍👍👍 I was so sorry to see you send off your 3 small stationary engines that I did a little tribute video on my channel. I will not be at all surprised if another one doesn't mysteriously appear in your shop sometime in the future 😉 Cheers, Alan.

30 years ago I bought a truck load of machinery and scraped the paint off it with scrapers made from files and the like.
About 5 years ago I started using a pneumatic needle chipping hammer. What took me days then literally I can accomplish in an hour. Especially good for castings.

I think a restoration series and a how to use series would be awesome. In the last ten years, partly because of your videos, My shop has grown to having a 9” south bend lathe ,a heavy 10, a 7” south bend shaper , 10” south bend grinder, two south bend drill presses , and a Bridgeport mill. I can use all of them because of you! You are the best! Thanks for all you do.

I would love to see an instructional series on the South Bend shaper. I've never had a lathe, milling machine, or shaper or used any of them, so I could benefit from a short video describing the three and what functions they each have, and their place in metalworking. What does each machine do, that the other two can't, etc? Can a milling machine do everything that a hobbyist might need or want to do, compared to the capabilities of a shaper? I will have all three machines, but only for hobby-type projects, not commercial. Anybody who knows you and Adam know that neither of you copy the other, that's just ridiculous. Keep up the great work!

I did some lathe, mill and welding work yesterday making repairs to my Farmall M. My lathe success is directly attributal to the instruction I get from you and Adam Booth. I commented to my wife that my hours of watching your videos is paying off. I passed on a midsize shaper recently because I had no shop space. Without people like you, Adam, Keith Rucker, Keith Fenner, being so generous and video cataloging all about the old machines and tips and tricks that a lifetime of experience has given you
    It would be lost
So please continue on this "Spa treatment" on the old shaper

awesome! I have the mk1 SB 7" shaper in mint condition. It is a joy to use, although with a mill in my shop, it doesn't get used as much. The finish that a shaper puts out is impossible to do on a mill. I'm glad to see that shapers are making a comeback, so to speak.

Brought back 1958 Shop Class memories learning how to setup a job with proper feed and clapper box orientation. Mr York's kept his Industrial Arts shop equipment in top shape.
Two years later I used those principals to machine a table top 11 x 17 surface plate from a blank of steel using a 12 foot planer in a vocational night school course. To large to move the planer had set dormate many years, I had to relace and degrease the belts, clean and lubricate the gear train before hitting the start button.
The yellow knobs are novel replacements but black restores the OEM look. I am guessing a South Bend lathe produced their existence from vintage Tenite plastic screwdriver handles, Tenite has long been replaced with modern alloy grades of plastic.
You and Abom79 are not competitors, enjoy the learning content from both individual channels.
    Thanks

Hats off to you Mr Pete! I came across your channel a couple years ago and 50 years now in the machinist trade your teaching me things I don't know. At my part time machinist job I am teaching young people the basics of lathe and mill. I tell them to watch your channel above all others which they do. In my garage I have lathes and mills along with a cute little broadhead garret shaper. Was very lucky to have metal shop classes when I was in high school.

I would love to see the whole series. I have a 7" Delta shaper and I have used it for several jobs including keying a pulley. I have no milling machine. I used it to bevel many weld test coupons for open root weld practice. It is versatile ,quiet, tooling is cheap and easy to grind and it can produce a great surface finish. Mine was an ex-school shop machine and came with the original light, vise, but no cabinet. I mounted it to a small rollaway tool box. I also got the original three phase motor and a single phase motor which I am using now.

Mr Pete I love the opening rant. I too hope to take my last breath doing what I love. Glad to hear you aren't leaving us for Florida retirement. If my vote means much i would love to see a series on this shaper. I have done a lot of research on shapers and am always glued to the information because there is not much to be had because everyone is into Bridgeport style mills. I will admit that my verticle mill is where i spend most of my time but I also have a little Atlas horizontal mill and same with it little to no information on it. I consider the Southbend Shaper and the Atlas Horizontal mill both Hobby machines. But hey it is my Hobby. Something I can do sitting in my walker. I personally think nursing homes should have a Hobby machine shop for guys like myself. We certainly agree on those cheezy looking vice handles.

Glad you are staying here and will keep doing what you were born to do. I recently purchased a small New England shaper from Matt at Lost Creek. It had all the original parts, including the vise. It also has a clutch like the larger shapers. I can;t find any manuals or information on this machine. But I figure if I need to put a keyway in a gear or sprocket, it beats buying all the expensive broaches (and usually making the oddball sized bushings).

"Kids and sailors are the only two things that could foul a steel ball bearing with a rubber mallet".,; taught to me by my old auto shop teacher... and ex-Navy man. I don't think many people understand the hours that a shop teacher has to spend maintaining machinery, preparing jigs, and prepping stock. It takes me an hour to prep the paperwork to get a belt and then wait at least a week to get it delivered. It is easier to go on my own time, layout $15 for nice Gates belt, and "donate" that cost & effort to my program. Multiply that by 25 machines! Rant over.

Keep it coming Mr P, I'd love to see more on the shaper and I really appreciate and understand the effort you're having to put into the making of these videos. Bravo... and I have to mention a memory of my apprentice days when my pal mounted a shaper and rode it like horse. Needless to say it didn't go down to well with our instructor. Happy days though....

Love your restoration videos. Even though I will never have a Shaper, your descriptions on evaluation and repairs are good examples that have carryover usage for many other restoration projects.

At the end of the video where you showed the truck heading down the street with the three engines on it, I imagined that will be my view some day and was on the verge of crying myself. Get yourself another one! Just one will do. Maybe a true hit n miss this time so it's different from the others. Blessings from Ohio.

Mr. Pete. Please continue with this series. I've rebuilt a SB 9" and a Atlas horizontal mill and find this content to be very interesting. Also please produce a shaper instructional video, but please make it pertinent to an Atlas shaper, also. As I own and trying to learn to become proficient on an Atlas shaper. I really enjoy the videos, keep up the good work.

Yes please Mr Pete, more on the South Bend shaper, and I agree, you must get rid of those awful yellow resin knobs.
    Keep up the good work.

Thank you for sharing your knowledge, experience and thoughts. Don't think you are alone in your opinions, I hate to see old machines go to the scrap yard, you can't get the quality built into them today. Thanks Mr Pete!

Please go forward with the restoration of this shaper! I may never get one, but what's learned can be applied to other items just as well. Besides, that shaper is the same size (no idea what brand ours was) of shaper we had in our 9th grade metal shop class back in 1971/72. Kind of know your feeling about the engines - at 65 I just got rid of some years worth of magazines I'd been storing. I do have digital copies of them, but not quite the same.

👍Good stuff. Thanks for saving on the ol boy! I thoroughly enjoy your videos. Takes me back to a simpler time. I believe public schools did a dis service when they started removing shop classes. Hind site is 20-20 as they say.

I would love to see more of this series. As you said I will never own a shaper (woodworkers have a different sort of a shaper as you no doubt know) but I enjoy seeing the process of discovery as you begin and then the solutions to the problems you identify. I suspected seeing those hit and miss motors going down the road would be a tough day for you. I hope the shaper helps...

I'm pretty sure you could make a 3 hour paint scraping video interesting!! If there is a man of the face of the Earth that can, that's you! I was always told to get the biggest machine I could afford and fit through the garage door, and at the moment something like a 7" shaper seems to be the way to go, hopefuly!! Thanks for sharing and take care!!

Hi Mr Pete, thanks for the video, although I'm not a machinist I found this interesting, it's had a pretty hard life by the looks of it, but your enjoyment will come from using your skills to get that thing working again. And not least the sense of acomplishment when the first chips start flying, lol, keep em coming, stay safe, best wishe's to you and your's, Stuart.uk.

I just cleaned out my garage and sold most of my plumbing supplies and tools. If I had sold them one at a time it would have taken years, so I sold the whole lot. I was feeling a bit sad but these are just material things of the world, and you can’t take them with you when we leave this world. This is just another stepping stone in the life of a sentimental foolish old man like me.

I'm like you, sir. I hate resto work! But I do enjoy cleaning and repairing machines for my use or sale. I'm in the market for a shaper, so tips and how to vids is very interesting to me. As you said, large shapers can be had for scrap iron prices. I need something I can handle myself with my equipment. 3 phase is available but floor space is at a premium. Great video. Your thorough inspection and observations really help in my searches and the checking out of said equipment. Thanks

Please do film!! Shapers seem to be more and more popular - or at least they are getting harder to find for sure! I learned a lot from your last shaper videos, and will absolutely learn more as you go through this one. I have an older Atlas 7" that occupies a place of love in my garage!

I found a man working a shaper in Bangkok. One day.
I stopped to watch and talk with the man. Very very quickly. I had trouble keeping my eyes open.
All my best wishes Mark. M
