One of the most common questions we get are:
1: Do I need to re-gear for "xx" size tires?
2: What gear ratio do I need for my Jeep? (4.10s? 4.56s? 4.88s? 5.13s? 5.38s?)
On this Episode of Lets Get After it we go over we go over one of the most important upgrades you can do to your Jeep to keep the drivability with larger tires; Re-Gearing!
Why is regearing so important?
Jeep keeps downshifting?
What is the best gear ratio for jk jl jt tj?
We answer all of those today!

Have really enjoyed this series. You guys tossed in some 5.13s and an ARB for me last week and what a great experience! As a person that has done everything myself on my rig, so key to have such a great shop to trust for those instances when things are outside of my comfort level.
Glad we could help out!
You are 100% right I have 538 in my 2014 Rubicon 2 door standard With 4" left . It pulls like crazy But my top speed 75- 80 With the engine rev About 4 grand. But off road you can put it in 1st gear and it will climb up hills without even having to touch the gas
I always tell people, you don’t NEED to regear, but you absolutely should!! Gears are that upgrade that people don’t want to do because it’s no aesthetic. You don’t visually see anything new and cool. But once you do finally regear you’ll wonder why you never did it earlier.
We always recommend a re-gear. JL's are a little different as they "can" get away with a bigger tire, but keeping 8th gear as the factory intended is much needed. JK's and older is definitely a must!
Going for the ‘24 two door Rubicon with the Extreme Recon package. I’ll do 1” wheel spacers and call it good.
2021 JL 4turbo, 35”, 4.56s, 8spd auto. Dana30. (yeah, I know) Seems to be a pretty sweet setup. Balancing pavement/trails.
I just put a spartan lockers & regeared my 2011 ford ranger XLT FX4 off road from 4.10 with 31s to 4.56 with 33s, plus the added weight of winch bumpers, 6" lift, overland bed rack & tent plus swing out sparetire tailgate. The only thing i wanna do next is calibrate the speedometer to the right speed mileage
Thanks for this info bro!! Makes a whole lot of sense when going up a hill and I have to down shift a couple times just to get over the hill!! 🤙🏻
Glad to help!
I have an 05 LJR and a 2013 jku Sahara and by far the regear is the best mods yet .
It makes a HUGE difference in daily drivability. Makes you wonder how you ever drove it without a re-gear!
4:34 Just to avoid confusion on a bike it’s the tooth count on the rear that gets higher not the gear number. So modern bikes have as much as 52 teeth in the rear but this would be the lowest gear (1st).
the numbering system is a little confusing!
if we are relating the jeep world to bikes, The higher the ratio number numerically, the lower the torque. For example 5.13's will apply more torque in first gear or 4wd low than 3.73s
2023 2 door wrangler sport s with a 2.5 in lift on 37’s. Thinking 4.88 gears what do you think ?
Great video! Planning on ordering 24 rubicon 3.6, 35s, will put on rooftop and maybe tow a couple of times a year. Should I get the 4.88 option from the factory?
Highly recommended!
2018 JK 2 door, 5 spd autostick, 3.6 motor, 3.21 stock gears. 315/70r17E's, in four low crawling I rarely need the skinny pedal, on the highway I rarely see 5th gear, 😂, oh sport, considering a UD44 up front, 3.5" game changer, lots of armor and a total belly skid, doubt I will ever go bigger than 35's, been thinking 4.56, but sometimes I think 4.88 or 5.13
4.88 if you plan on staying with 35s!
Someone who knows what they are talking about...great video Thanks... ! Sorry if I missed or might not understood... 6 speed manual will be different than 6 speed auto in same wrangler, correct? Everything else you discussed was super clear!!! Thanks!
Correct! Sorry for not being clear on that
Putting together a 84 CJ with AMC 401 T-176 and Dana 300. Dana 60 rear. 37” tires. Not a wheeler, just personal preference. What do you recommend for gear ratio.
Hi, I’ve been driving my TJ around on 35s with a 2.5 litre engine and 5 speed stick. Could you give me the “magic number” gear ratio that you would recommend for my situation. My acceleration is beyond slow lol. Thank you.
A must only if you need them for a specific task.
Thank you for the great videos. They are very informative. I have a 22 jeep wrangler Rubicon Extreme, Recon Package. It currently has the 456 gears from manufacture. Someday I would like to go from a 35 to 37 inch tire. It has the 2.0 L turbo engine in it. How do you feel about the 456 gears with 37“ x 12 1/2 tires. This is mostly a daily commuter vehicle, but I also like to do over landing and off-road trails several times out of the year
Thanks
You will be fine no need to touch anything.
I'm glad I listened to your video I have a 2021 JL sport I am currently running 33s on it and I want to go to 35 some people tell me I don't have to re-gear and some people tell me I do. What's your professional opinion on that?
35's are the weird spot where you *Can* Get away with not re-gearing depending on what factory ratio, and which engine you have. If you have 3.45's even a 35" tire will start to stay in 7th gear instead of 8th. drive it with 35s and see how it feels. If you think you may go to 37s one day, re-gear!
@@TheOutlawOffroad wow you know your stuff... I'll find out what I have...
I’m running 33s on 3.07 gears Manual transmission definitely need a re gear
We would definitely suggest it! It will make a world of a difference
I have a 2000 cherokee sport and have 33”s on it rn, wanna get 35s or 37s but am unsure on what to do, planning on axle swapping it w beefier axles but like I said unsure on what is best.
Even with 35's the front dana 30 is about at its limits. If you are thinking 37s, build a set of 44's or find a set of JK rubicon takeoffs and you'll be golden! with the 4.0 you'll want 4.88's or 5.13s
23 Jeep JL Sport stock with 3.6 ET 8spd and 3.21. Did a 500 mile trip my jeep and my trans kept searching between 6th to 8th @ 65mph. Any incline and it was out of 8th gear.
I would like to go 4.88 with my 255/85/17/s which are listed at 33.7 tall with Torsen diffs and better axles.
solid plan! 4.88s will help a ton, especially if you decide to go with a larger tire in the future. If you are dead set on 33's and alot of highway driving, 4.56 may be better for you
Thanks for this explanation!
2019 jl rubicon 2door 3.6L automatic transmission 315/70/17
I have 4.10
It's OK or go to 33s
How do i figure out what gear ratio i need to change to.
21 gladiator 3.6 8sp auto going to 35's with a 2.5 lift
Great video. Love the series. I am resurrecting an 89 YJ with 4.2l and 5spd manual and just put 33x12.5 tires on it. Have Dana35/30 with factory 3.07 gears. I’ve done the formula (33 x 3.07/28) to figure what I should have and it works out to be 3.73 (rounded up). But when pursuing different forums I see folks saying 4.55 or even 4.88 on 33s! I will mostly be driving around town but would like to off road a bit. Should I be going that high of a ratio and/or would 4.11 be a good compromise?
If you see a lot of highway driving, 4.10s would be an excellent compromise. If you want more low end torque or a bigger tire in the future, a 4.56 would be perfect!
Maybe you can help me, Im finding alot of misinformation on the interwebs. I recently got a sweet deal on a 2012 Jk sahara with a 3.6 , 6 speed manual on 35s. I believe it has 3.73s in it but not positive. It never sees 6th gear. The guy I got it from threw in a set of Yukon 5.13s front and rear with install kits on the deal but they were never installed. My question is are 5.13s going to be a little much? the jeep will see about 60% Montana highway and 40% steep mountains. Itll see some ATV trailer towing but not much weight. It is also highly doubtful of going to a bigger tire. Ive run many a jeep with 4.56 and 4.88s with 35-38 inch tires but theyve always been trailer queens or beaters that never saw the highway. This one is different especially with a 6 speed. You seem to have the info I need before I dump a ton of money into putting the wrong gears in and end up divorced because of it. lol
Hey Rob, great question! We want to answer this on our podcast, Dirt2Dust. @Dirt2DustShow here on youtube.
Check it out on Friday!
2020 ram 2500 power wagon running 315/50r22 going to go to 37x15.5r22 in next year or so. Truck about 9800lbs with bumpers an crap idea on a good or better gear over the 4.10
Whats a "shift point". BTW I have manual trans....
Shift point is referring to an Automatic transmission. The computer sends a signal to the trans to shift at a certain RPM.
Man, I’m a newbie to all this and getting my 2022 gladiator rubicon ready for overlanding. Going 37’s and currently have 4:10 gears. This video is much appreciated as I hear so many different opinions. I want my vehicle to perform well on road and off road. What is the main difference for my vehicle whether I go 4.88 or 5.13?
The biggest difference is where you're RPM's will be on the highway at that point. 5.13's will be slightly higher. If you are pulling a trailer, or loading down the rig with overlanding gear, 5.13's may be best. When in doubt, always go the next ratio up. We've never heard someone complain about being slightly overgeared, but we have had customers say "man i wish i geared up a little more because i decided to go to a bigger tire, haul more gear, want more torque down low" etc
@@TheOutlawOffroad thank you so much for your response. So the 5:13 gears will work fine in my stock gladiator rubicon rear? No need to change anything but the diff cover?
I saw this on another video to help keep the right amount of fluid in the rear diff for the new gears. Any recommendations on what diff covers to use to accommodate the new gears?
@@sandcrawlerrelics3610 You will need to change both front and rear gear ratio's. This is not a DIY project so research shops or if you have an Outlaw Offroad near you, we will absolutely walk you through it! You can also use the factory differential covers even with new gears
Thank you for how you care for the four wheel drive community gladiator sport with a towing package not Max tow pack looking to pull trailer haul camper unit on top and on the road and medium rock climbing which one of the rear ends are best for me 513 or 488 can you help me in this matter 37 inch tires in a lift p look forward to hearing back from you thanks
in your case, we would probably recommend the 5.13s especially with 37s
If someone wanted to run 40" tall tires would 4.90 gears be okay? Ouverson offers 4.90 gears for the Rockwell 2.5 ton axles. (I do not know if anyone else offers other gear ratios for Rockwell axles). While 4.90 gears might still not be enough for 40's but it is still much better than the factory 6.72 gears. Especially if the vehicle is going to see very much highway or daily driving use. Thanks in advance for any and all advice, opinions, or answers. Regards
It really depends on what type of vehicle, engine, etc. While they are crazy strong, Rockwells are such weird axles
@TheOutlawOffroad Can you explain why you say Rockwell axles are weird? Not trying to argue but to better understand what you mean. Thanks
I have a 2013 automatic on 37s and just put 4.88 but driving on the freeway my RPMs get pretty high 4.88 would not performed the same way on high-speed?
higher rpm on the highway is the trade off for a deeper gear ratio. You get more torque on the low end to push those 37s but it takes some of that power out of the top end
How to know what gear ratio I have on my wrangler..
the easiest way to is to lift the rear tires off the ground and make a mark on the drive shaft and tires. Spin the tires and watch the drive shaft and count rotations. For every 1 full rotation of the tire, you will get multiple rotations on the drive shaft. in between 3.5-4 rotations = 3.73, just barely over 4 rotations = 4.10, 4.5 rotations = 4.56, between 4.5-5 rotations = 4.88, just barely over 5 rotations = 5.13, and almost 5.5 rotations = 5.38. Hope that helps!
I am running 35s on a 3.0 lift kit, running a winch and heavy speak-box. My engine is 3.6L four door. What regearing, would work best for me?
If you are staying with 35's, 4.56 would be great!
Very informative video, thank you for posting. I have a 2021 Wrangler 392 with 33" tires. I want to go with 37" KM3, can you please help me decide if I need to re-gear and what gears I should choose? I've been researching for the past 4 months lol
We really like the torque and pull off road with 4.88's and 37s on the 392. If you are doing a ton of highway driving we would probably bump that down to 4.56. Either way, we strongly recommend Dana / Spicer gears for the JL.
U need a horse 😅
I've got a 2007 jeep wrangler jku 4 door. 3.8l V6 with automatic transmission. Currently running 33" Mickey Thompson tires with 2-1/2 " lift. I have a lot of weight such as tools, winch up front, etc. I do pull a trailer once in a while and go off roading some, but mostly highway and beach. What gear do you recommend as I'm getting ready to regear mine due to metal shaving showing up in gear oil.
That 3.8 needs all the help it can get LOL. 4.56 would get to more of a stock tire feeling and 4.88s would be more for performance if you decide to go to a 35 in the future.
Hi team, I run a Gladiator Mojave with tow package and 2inch AEV spacer lift. Do you recommend 37s or should I do a regear? Mojave has a 2.71:1 Transfer Case. There are not a lot of Mojave related videos in UA-cam. Your help will be appreciated.
If you have it in your budget to regear AND do 37s that Mojave will be an awesome vehicle. If you cant do both at the same time, 37s can go first and gears later, but you will probably notice that you want new gears sooner than later if going this route.
@@TheOutlawOffroad yup thanks for the response. I have installed the 37s. Went with the BFG KO2s, coz of lighter weight (67lb each). But still I could feel the rolling mass stopping the Jeep seeing 8th gear often.
I have a manual 2014 2door with 3” lift. I’m going with 35’s in the near future. What would you recommend as a overall do all gear. I go to the mountains several times a year but I’m also wheeling every other weekend.
Great informative video) If I may ask, what is the formulae used to calculate the proper gear ratio? My rig is a Willys JK (2dr) with a v6 automatic trans, 2018 . I am planning on 33.5 +/- .2 tires. I think but, not all that certain on factory ratio of 3.77. Regards)
think 32 in tires are good for 3.45 8speed got the 3.6 in there daily drivers// beach use
yes, thats pretty much the factory setup so you would be fine!

Not sure if you still check the comment section. I have a 2003 Wrangler TJ IL6 4.0 automatic 43RLE with a 3.73 gear and 33 inch tires. Jeep came with 28 inch sized tires. What regear should I get?

TJ/LJ and the 4.0 probably deserve a video on their own. With the auto, you need as much help as you can get.
For 33's we have found that 4.56 is a sweet spot. If you plan on going with a 35 in the future go ahead and do 4.88s

New Tire Size Multiplied By Original Gear Ratio, DIVIDED By Original Tire Size.
Is your new ideal gear ratio.
What gearing do I need to buy and have put on front and rear of a 2015 jk Sahara ultimate with auto transmission that is running 35” tires for the purpose of commuting (surface roads and interstate) and the occasional towing of a small trailer?
4.88's would work great!
recently bought a 2007 jeep wrangler jku. 3.8l v6 35 inch tires and I am wondering if the previous owner had it regeared. I notice the diff covers look like they were taken off in the past. When I am doing 70mph on the highway my rpm is just under 2k. I never feel it hunting for gears on the highway it stays locked in at just little under 2k rpm at 70mph.
I am getting about 16mpg on average even with 35 inch tires, steel bumpers, 2 inch lift
the easiest way to tell is to jack the rear axle up, mark the drive shaft with chalk or a paint pen and count how many times the driveshaft spins compared to one rotation of the tire.
For example, if the tire makes one rotation but your driveshaft spins a hair over 4 times, you have 4.10s. 4.5x and you probably have 4.56, close to 5x but not quite, 4.88 etc
I’ve got a 2017 JKU Sport. I want to run 37’s and I’m mostly a highway driver daily and hit trails every other weekend. What would you recommend for gear ratio?

4.88's would probably work great for you!
Great video! What gear would you recommend for 2021 Rubicon JLU 6 speed manual with 37s? I was thinking 5.13s.
5.13's would be the sweet spot! Slightly overgeared, but you would be able to hold 6th going uphill which is a huge game changer when it comes to driveability

Gd day I have a question. Im running. On 32 ×12.50- 15 tires on a 87 wrangler 4.0 (swapped out 4.2) what gearing do I need for this setup?
I have a question, I have a 1998 jeep zj with a 1m5 inch lift and I'm running 31's, I want to run 33's so I'm going to 4.88 gearing, but would I need a certain type of locker to that type of gearing or what?
The locker will be dependent on the gear ratio. Regardless of brand, Usually the break over is 4.56, so be on the lookout for a locker that says 4.56 and above or similar.
Great video. I have a 2014 Jk rubicon unlimited. Sitting on 315/70/17 on the oem wheel. I do tow a camper sometimes but man it has no power on hills just driving. Can you help me decide what gears I should be looking into for both the front and the rear?
Front and rear gears will always be the same. For that setup we would suggest a 5.13. For that tire size its a little over-geared, however it will help bring some power back when the camper is behind it, but also set you up for success when you go to a larger tire size!
I have a 1989 Jeep Cherokee 4.0l 5 speed manual stock with a 3" Lift on 33 BFG's...I'm in the mountains in Colorado, I struggle up any hills; even slight inclines...was told I should go with 4.56 gears...can some tell me if this is correct?
4.56 or 4.88 would do well

I just purchased a 2018 JLU sport with a 6 speed Manual trans . I've decided on a 3.5 lift with 37s and some steel bumpers with aluminum flat fenders. Im trying to figure out what would be the best gearing for a general use vehicle, mostly driving around town, but making a few weekend trips to the shore and playing in the dirt and mud. Would you recommend a 4.88, 4.56 or maybe something else?
Typically for something like this with heavy bumpers we would recommend 4.88s
What backlash do you try to be within for 5:13's on a JT?
.006-.010 Per Yukon's instructions. However backlash is only part of the equation for a good wear pattern. Shims and preload come into play as well as the correct break in procedures

Hey there. What would be the correct gearing for a 2005 LJ Rubicon running 35" tires?
Lot's of variables here. Generally for auto 5.13s and 4.88 for manual but this does not take into account if you're driving up and down elevation changes, on the beach etc
I recently had a 2.5 inch lift and 35's (actual measured 33.75 with weight on) installed on 2015 4-door Rubicon Hard Rock with 4.10 gears. I am on the fence between re-gearing to 4.56 or 4.88. Living in Colorado, does that affect what gears I should install?

What would you recommend for a 2008 Wrangler Rubicon JKU with the 4.1 transfer case, 3.8 liter with 4 speed auto and 35" tires? Factory 4.10 gears.
4.56 or 4.88
@@TheOutlawOffroad According to everything I've read, 5.38 is the magic number for the 3.8 with auto and 35" tires.

Give us a call and we can get it figured out!
Question. If I want to get better fuel economy in my 1995 4.0 litre Jeep Cherokee Xj, what gear ratio would I need? I have 30" tires on stock 15" rims. Been considering making changes to save gas money if I can.
What are you getting?
My 1999 XJ 4.0L has 32s and I'm going up to 4.88s this year. My jeep is not my daily so I can take it this deep for towing and carrying weight occasionally. At this point I will have very poor fuel economy.
For you if you want better fuel economy, stay 3.55 gears at 30s. But you will notice less power. I did 30s for 3 years and it honestly maybe added 1-2mpg highway, but the biggest savings was larger tires and not spending money on a gear swap.
So ideally it depends on what you use your jeep for.
But I'll say 3.55 gears on 32s is death, here in Wyoming my jeep cries everytime I ask it to climb a hill at any speed
I have a 05 TJ Rubi on 35s with 4.56. I have to re gear due to a bad install. Since I am at that point I was considering 4.88s. it is my daily and I plan to off road more. Any advice or thoughts on my direction? Thank you in advance.
the 4.0 needs all the help it can get. 4.88's and 35s is a great match
Thank you!@@TheOutlawOffroad
I have a 2020 Jeep jlu willys edition, upgraded to 35 inch tires, has 2.5 inch lift. Some heavy after market parts like steel fenders and bumpers. Will be towing a small utility trailer, under 2000lbs. Getting lost in the weeds on what gear ratio would be best, live in Ca so hills and elevation is a factor. Any advise would be appreciated?
Hey Jason. We would recommend you be at 4.88 for an automatic transmission and 4.56 for the manual transmission.
@@TheOutlawOffroad Wow, thank you so much. I have the manual transmission so I'll start my shopping there.
Do I need to regear my jeep gladiator. Because when I bought the jeep the dealer put 35 on it
with 35's its not necessarily a NEED, but will be very noticeable if you do.
2016 Jeep Wrangler JKU Sport with 3.21's and 35" Kenda Klever RT's that actually measure 34" from the ground to the top. Automatic transmission. It has a 3.5" lift and Rocky Ridge bumpers and a winch. I don't rock crawl. I live in eastern NC. It is a daily driver. Trying to decide between 4.10 and 4.56. I'm a little concerned about it revving too high on the highway at 70-75 mph. Any help ?? Thanks
We would recommend 4.56
@The Outlaw Offroad thanks, that's what I went with...and I like it!!
Can't find nowhere in Houston to regear my truck
If you feel like driving to the gulf coast, we have a shop in Biloxi MS!
I have a 2021 392 with 35s and a 2.5" RK lift. Overlanding and daily driver. Can you provide a recommended gear ratio upgrade?
I have my JTR scheduled for 5.13s to he done next week. Is it necessary to use extra capacity diff covers, or will the OEM ones and proper maintenance be fine?
8 MIN. SAYING THE SAME THING! 🤦♂️
🙄 seriously ..
You should make a video and make it shorter and better, get it done, Nancy.
8 minutes of saying the same thing. Just tell us what size gear for the tires size. Waste of time. 410 for 33? 556 for 35? 566 for 36? Bro You said nothing in 8 minutes… you already specify jeep in your menu so? Lol
Unfortunately, it’s not that easy. Tire size is only one factor. Model, engine, transfer case ratio, transmission type and other things go into to making a correct decision. Sorry, we couldn’t give you the info you demanded, but we always prefer to give correct info for the specific situation. We try not to make blanket statements that are uneducated and inaccurate.
@@TheOutlawOffroad What gearing do you recommend for a 2021 Wrangler Willys 2.0 Turbo Automatic with 37x12.5x17 tires

I have a 20201 Gladiator Wills with Dana44, Im going with 35s. I was told 4.56 would be the best. How much would it cost me for you to tell me the best idea of gears to go with ?
8 speed auto, 3.6 gas
We don't charge for advice around here! 4.56 is right on the money
I know i nhave to change the tire size to correct the speedo butwhen I get the gear changed do I need to change it in the computer ? @@TheOutlawOffroad
