With respect to the ending, trashing new York and presumably the earth, it's not stated, it's more of an assumption based on his previous actions. He just sort of, heads to the surface, and, doesn't really do much. Comes into contact with a woman. But really, what would Lucifer do? The books ending is far lamer, he heads to New York and, just, doesn't do anything..... Hell is destroyed by angels, no less. Baffling. So I took some artistic license with the end, because, frankly the true ending, is bollocks

I really looked forward to The Scarlet Gospels and I was so disappointed.
I love Pinhead, yes he's pure evil but he's so intriguing and I want to know everything about him and the cenobites and the labyrinth and for me that was hell!
I did really enjoy the book until they went to hell.
The characters bored me, I didn't care care about them like I normally do! I didn't like a romance happening in hell🤣 really could you be flirty covered in blood and fearing for your life?
It wasn't like Clive Barker, it was like he couldn't be bothered or had been hassled into it.
Lucifers story was just awful, Pinhead V Lucifer just didn't do it for me

I was hoping that scarlet gospels would be made into a movie. Even had an idea of them releasing Hellraiser 1 & 2 along with Lord of Illusions as a set to introduce people to the characters before a scarlet gospels movie would release. Or have the four movies release as a box set together. Maybe even just shave it down to Hellraiser, Lord of Illusions and Scarlet Gospels.

The Bible doesn’t say lucifer even has feats to come close to the feats of the HellPriest. Especially the HellPriest in the movies. The HellPriest can control reality, mind raping abilities. Mind rapes spirits and destroys souls over and over for eternity. Lucifer doesn’t have those powers according to the Bible. He just deceives people and lies and that’s it. Lucifers a piece of trash. Clive Barker is documented to have been involved directly with the production of the first four Hellraiser films, at the very least as Executive Producer. For the fourth, Hellraiser: Bloodline, Barker was brought in to help sort out the story and subsequent editing after the initial film had been rejected by the producers. After that point, he wisely walked away and let the series literally go to hell. He thereafter spoke of his selling the rights to Hellraiser films as a 'Faustian bargain' he somewhat regretted. Who could blame him, seeing as how excremental the series generally became after Bloodline.

Again, I must say I do love how Clive portrayed Lucifer. Imagine being so intimately close to God in all His glory and majesty, and then one mistake (granted, it's a really, REALLY bad one) cuts you off from Him forever. Must be devastating. I see it as a child who rebels against their parent. We've all been there, right? However, in their rebellion they do something to injure the relationship greatly, and the parent is taken away from them by, say, death or some other dire, irreversible manner. The guilt said child must feel, the overwhelming, all-consuming pain. No wonder Lucifer decided to end his suffering. I'd also be pretty pissed off if I was brought back to suffer once more (albeit unintentional).
It's seriously one of my favourite aspects of the novel. It's definitely a departure from the irredeemably evil caricature that the concept of Satan has become.

To the point about the tone having been different in 'Scarlet Gospels' I'm not entirely sure I see your point. However, I also haven't read the entire Clive Barker catalog. I've read five of the novels and novellas. Perhaps a quick example...?
But continuing this opinion about the tone being off, thus written by another author, I've read elsewhere on the internets by what appeared to be unconnected sources, Clive Barker had submitted a much lengthier version, as Clive might like to hear it described a girthier version. In time though the publishing company removed some of the trunk to make it a more sapling-esque version motivated by what I read in only one place as an attempt to make it TEEN-friendlier. Take that info as you will. This as that are all just a digital illusion in a blind man's iPhone.

I think that Satan´s idea was to make Pinhead rest. Because he could not stand the idea of Pinhead becoming an unpredictable force which could result in the annihilation of humanity, depriving the Devil himself of control over Earth. Pinhead had had over 700 k. millennia to learn to respect and value human life. But his ceaseless appetite for power, and thus his narcissism, became his downfall. His failure to respect Lucifer´s respect, became his downfall, because his arrogance had made him into his worst enemy. Pinhead did for Hell what Albert Bourla and Steve Peters did for medicine. So to Satan, the man who is created to teach others how to live in peace from pain and suffering, is destined to rest in peace as a result of his downward spiral. In short, Pinhead died, because he spammed admin. Thanks for your video man. Excellent breakdown and analysis. Kind regards from Iceland.

I thought he would be some goat horned thing but was actually depicted as being angelic. someone below in the comments said the only good parts of the book were the pinhead scenes, but for me he just came across as a cheesy Saturday morning cartoon villain.

I mean, the place described in the Scarlet Gospels has a Christian-like version of hell with a recognizable name for the devil, but it's worth mentioning that what is described here isn't strictly speaking a biblical hell. In Christian tradition, Lucifer is the lord of the Earth ('the prince of the powers of the air'), not hell. He's not in some far away place punishing the damned, but 'roaming the Earth like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour'. That might have been a more interesting way to go from a narrative perspective.

Honestly, it’s in keeping with the evolution of Barker’s writings. Look at Coldheart Canyon. The Devil’s Country is an S&M Wonderland, but in an explicitly Satanic sense, not the totally alien sensory explorations of the Cenobites of The Hellbound Heart. Coldheart Canyon, incidentally, includes references to God and the Devil, and appearances by Lilith and an angel.
What confuses me is Barker’s antipathy towards elements like Leviathan and the Labyrinth, which he himself introduced in Hellraiser 2. So I don’t get it, except as an indication of Barker becoming more interested in traditional religious ideas of good and evil.

I was looking forward to reading this when I heard it was being released, then when I did read it I was actually disappointed with it. Parts of it were really good, like the character of D'Amour and his friends. But I hate the way The Hell Priest was written. It was totally NOT how he was set in The Hellbound Heart and indeed, how the first two movies portrayed him, which at least stuck to characters role within the story. However I felt Clive Barker focused TOO much on his personal dislike of where the franchise was taken, thanks to the studios pissing around with it just to retain the rights. Ultimately I felt like the way Hell Priest was written in The Scarlet Gospels was no better or indeed, any different to the way he had been portrayed in most of the hashed movies, which is quite ironic seeing how much Clive Barker has become to resent them because of that.
I also felt that by the end of the book, he lost interest with even finishing the story properly and just half arsed it

if you do like the character D'Amour he is in several of Barker's books. I will assume (perhaps wrongly) that you haven't read any of barkers other books since you didn't state one way or another. The short story "the last illusion" of which the lord of illusions movie is based has Harry in it. the books the great and secret show and everville both have him in it also. probably 1 or 2 others i cant think of off the top of my head. the great and secret show and everville are both great books tho my favorite of his does not have harry in it, Imajica, which i highly recommend reading also.

Barker’s works always rate an A+ when I begin reading because he is such a master storyteller. I finished Gospels with a B- grade. The overall tone was that of a creator who just want this to be over. The insertion of a Christian mythos was a mistake. The detailed description of Hell suffered and at times seemed more like a late night walking tour of the streets of San Francisco. And what happened to that “daughter” he sired at the beginning? Truly a disappointment.

That's the same vibe I got from The Scarlet Gospels too. The book came off like Barker finally shedding himself of one of his most famous creations. The book, "It's Alive: Bringing Your Nightmares to Life" has an interview with Clive Barker. In it, Barker explains that he didn't intend on Pinhead becoming a sex symbol. According to him, "He's very sexualized but he talks about pain and pleasure in a detached way. You don't get the impression he's getting off every Wednesday."
However, Barker seems aware by how his work has been interpreted by others stating, "...yet you get told what is true by the people who read you, am I right? It's people's response to the work that tells you what the work is. It never occurred to me that these rather ominous figures would ever be attractive. For example: his (Pinhead) is not a face you could touch. By his very nature, it's gonna hurt. Not in a good way. Plus, his personality is not fun. For me to be sexy is to be fun. He is not fun. He is judgemental, he is cold, and I think that nature is opposite to sexy."
The interview has some interesting insights behind the creation of the first Hellraiser movie that I thought was pretty awesome, like the fucking music, but from I've read in a lot of other Clive Barker interviews when he talks about Pinhead he seems very detached from the character and the franchise as a whole.

Back in the early 2000s Clive Barker was phone interviewed on a radio show;Mancows morning madhouse in Chicago. Mancow asked if he was going to make any more hellraiser and pinhead.
CB: No! As a matter of fact as soon as I am done with this interview I am going to go into my office and write the death of pinhead.
Mancow: oh so there IS going to be more?

Okay, think about it for a little bit about how Cenobites are created. Cenobites are humans that were mutated/transformed into Cenobites. They never really died in the first place. They then could only be killed by a relic, hellish weapon, blessed weapon or someone very powerful. Lucifer, whom killed himself, still had his essence within his armor. His mortal shell was resurrected, his essence returned to his mortal shell. He awoke from Limbo. Then killed the Cenobites. The Cenobites died in Hell, so they are probably in that Limbo state, unable to resurrect themselves, only can be resurrected by Lucifer or someone poweful.

The point where pain and pleasure melt into one. everybody seeks the Cenobites to experience ecstasy thinking it is ultimate pleasure, while the Cenobites sees pain as the ultimate way to reach ecstasy. In that way they are not evil, just helping the people to reach ecstasy from their point of view. I think that Clive got tired with the franchise using his originally concept to become something else and killed him of.

I've got to ask because I don't see it being addressed below in the comments. Maybe I'm just missing something because I HAVE read the Hellbound Heart (a long while back), but I haven't read the Scarlet Gospels. Here is my question: Are we CERTAIN that this is the same story? The Cenobites in the book are....Kind of freeform. If anything, the main entity in "charge" seemed to be the mysterious Engineer. Now, I know Clive wrote that story and based the film Hellraiser off of it. But....Are we CERTAIN that the Scarlet Gospels is a sequel to the Hellbound Heart. Or could it be Clive's way of saying: "You don't want my novella. You want the movie version with...Pinhead. Alright. I'll write a book for that. And wipe him out. There you go. End of story." The Hellbound Heart and Scarlet Gospels just don't seem to be on the same page. I mean, it doesn't really matter. Just something I noticed. Hellbound Heart seemed to be more about chaos and order. And Scarlet Gospels, from what I've heard, seems the typical good vs. evil. Similar concepts, but very different. This would be a good question for someone to ask Clive in an interview. He's sick of the "I love Pinhead" comments, anyway. For the record, he's not a fan of the sequels to Hellraiser, but what has angered him the most is the fact that Doug Bradley got taken out as Pinhead. He's gets livid when you bring that up. When you talk about the movies, he's kind of "meh." But you bring up the actor switch, you'll get to see a man ENRAGED!

I have noticed that most older people (in general) tend to become more conservative and latch onto standard religious tropes more and more. It seems that Clive Barker is exhibiting those traits. His younger self was much more open-minded and eager to explore internal realms and alternative philosophies along with alternative lifestyles.
But, when you spend years with fading health and fading vitality, along with accumulated heartbreaks and disappointments, and "mortality" knocking louder at your door, you tend to become averse to things representing "wildness" of youth, favoring ideas that give stable emotional comfort.
Unless you are up to the challenge of FULLY exploring the "inner world" and strive to become a "Master-Shaman" (of some form), your fascination for these things will just run its course in old age.
Clive has definitely lost his edge with maturity (but it IS reversible sometimes).
Someone who is seriously willing to continue the course Clive has initiated must NOW pick up the torch, or it will die just like Pinhead.
Clive has really wanted to "kill the whole thing" for a long time now. "The Scarlet Gospels" was his attempt to accomplish that when mere ongoing "neglect" failed to do the job.
Apparently, it DIDN'T kill it as intended ... and here we are.
I just hope that the new torch-bearers will do it justice.
