I love what Joe Rogan said, Not everyone will have the same opportunities to hunt the best places. Not everyone has the nicest house or drives the most awesome cars! I’ll never be able to hunt the same places as these guys but I’m legitimately excited to watch others hunt and do things that I love but will never be able to do and that’s still awesome!!
Yeah you can look at that way or you can look at how the hunting business has progressed. They're slowly making it a rich man's game. I've even noticed how within the industry guys sorta magically draw tags in areas or states that are drawing only that regular people have putting in for for years and even decades. That part I absolutely don't agree with.

You completely missed the point. He talks a lot about choices people make and how much effort they give those choices. Those guys are there because they made good choices and gave lots of effort. If you're not willing to make the good choices and put in the work it doesn't mean you shouldn't be happy with what you got, it does mean though that you don't get to complain about your situation. Cam says he used to do public land hunts in Oregon because that's all he could do AT THAT TIME. He never said that's all he would ever do. Cam would be just another casual if he had the mindset you're describing. He didn't take no for an answer. Now he gets the good hunts. You found comfort in words that were meant to inspire hard work, not comfort. The idea is that life isn't fair, work harder. Not that life isn't fair, enjoy what you got. Not everyone has goals like these guys. Maybe you goal is to be a good husband or whatever. Cam wants to hunt. He would sacrifice it all for his goals. That's why he gets the best trips. You found a way to make it sound like Joe was advocating for mediocrity. He was saying if you're mediocre, you can still be happy. Not that mediocrity is the goal bruh. These guys are savage. They were always going to end up there. When you say, "I'll never, this or ill never that" and believe it then you're probably right. I doubt thought like that cross Cam's mind and if they do they're shown the door quickly.
My 14 year old son drew a limited entry tag, ended up breaking his femur a week before the hunt. We changed tactics set him up in a lounge chair 100’ from the road and called them in. Missed a nice one on the 3rd day, called in a herd bull the last day had him set up too low to get a shot. Repositioned him with a couple hours left, had a nice 7x5 come in last 15 minutes of the hunt and made a perfect shot. What an amazing experience
Just completed my first archery elk trip this last week in Colorado at a highly populated unit. It was extremely tough hunting with little to no bugling. Ended up 200ft below the peak and got out of there with a legal bull in 5 days. The fact that it’s only a 3x3 but had 8” eye guards doesn’t even matter to me.. as far as I’m concerned this bull is a trophy due to the harsh environment and grit it took to get it done. I’m sure I value this bull the exact same as you gentleman and yours. The grind is the real trophy!
Im 55 and went on my first Elk hunt last year in San Juan National Forrest in CO. I was supposed to go two years ago but had a cardiac arrest on my neighbors porch and ended up dying. Needless to say, Im alive and kickin (Glory be to God) but when I recovered and got off the Statins and Beta Blockers I started getting in shape to go hunting elk. The ride out from Pa to CO was exciting but when you start seeing the Rockies you heart starts pounding faster. Our Camp was at 8k (I live at 500ft) so I was already feeling "it". We started in the day before the season and made it up to 11k, and with in 18 hours were forced off the mountain due to a severe snow storm. Spent the rest of the time searching for the Elk and walking miles upon miles each day. We got one on day 3 but I wasnt lucky enough to get one myself. This year we are heading back and hunting a different area. I am hooked and I will be doing this as long as my body allows me to. I am Airborne Infantry and this Elk hunting is by far the most physical and mental abuse I have done to myself since my time Airborne. I have been busting my ass for the past 6 months to get ready for this year. I was calling the others in my group counting down the months. We talk on a regular basis and only about one thing! ELK HUNTING. I have not had a chance to Bow hunt Elk but I want to experience it one of these days. I hunt whitetail in Pa with a Bow (Pa rifle season is scary). Point is, Elk hunting out west is addictive and I am an addict! Making my life better both mentally and physically. Great Video, happy for you all that you were successful! God Bless!
Thank you for your service Chris. I'm 55 as well. Shot my first elk with a rifle. I couldn't believe how exciting and challenging it was. Shot a couple more with a rifle in the next few years. Then got skunked on an archery hunt. Never drew my bow. But the effort required to get close, the challenge, the physicality.....I too, am an elk addict. I will only hunt with a bow from here on out. Killed one two years ago with my bow and I had to sit down before I fell down from the adrenaline dump. Killed a decent Colorado 5x6 last week with my bow and it was the same feeling. Good luck to you. Get one or two or ten even with your gun. But as a fellow whitetail hunter(Michigan), once you get one with string and stick, i suspect you will be hooked like me. I always love when Cam brings up the MUST BE NICE saying…its 100% true. Dont hate on guys that have earned the money and spent years to be able to live the hunting lifestyle. Joe is also right…not everyone gets the same thing in life. Im a blue collar hunter….and I realize that im probably not going to ever be able to Elk hunt. But i dont hate the guys who do…good for them…and I enjoy watching their youtube videos of the stalk, hunt, shot , processing. I live vicariously through it. I still get out and hunt whitetail and bear and turkey…..and Im still happy as hell.
I’ve been white tail and turkey hunting. Elk is a dream of mine, but if I never get to be on a hunt I’m grateful for finding Cam’s podcast so I can enjoy living vicariously.
Great pod, thank you for sharing your stories. I just spent 5 days hunting the Colorado Grand Mesa for Elk. I didn’t hear a single bugle or see an elk. I saw everything else, bears, moose, deer and even wolves. I drove 17 hours from California and loved every minute of my experience. I didn’t get to punch my tag and that’s fine, I will shoot everyday and keep hammering.
I just wanted to jump in and say thank you to the Joe Rogan Podcast for sparking my interest in bowhunting. I've been listening for years, and the conversations about hunting have inspired me to dive into this incredible lifestyle. It’s not a cheap hobby, but it’s definitely rewarding. Just took my 12 year old son on his first buffalo hunt in the north of Australia. I guided up there for years but it was my first time hunting back there since i left the NT 12 years ago. He took a trophy bull with a .458 win mag. Couldnt be prouder.
I’ve watched this a dozen times, then Cam came out with the actual hunting video. Now I’ve watched “Elk Heaven “ more. This is how we are supposed to be, a brotherhood. I’m as old as you guys and you’re my heroes. Joe, I use Evolution Outdoors mechanical broadheads. I love them. I also use Grim Reaper, carnifour and whitetail special. Just awesome. Adam’s “peaking”.🤣Love it.
Harvested a mule deer buck opening day this year. On Monday I took my 6 year old daughter with me hunting. We successfully harvested a whitetail doe. All public land. Went and picked up another whitetail doe fawn tag. Still have my cow calf elk tag to fill and my wife's deer tag. It's been a successful season so far and it is only my 2nd season doing archery!
Just Spent 10 Days with my son Elk hunting in the backcountry of Montana.... hiked around 10 miles a day.... heard about 5 bugles..... saw about 50 elk ..... the wolvws the reintroduced have the elk silent...I wish we could have " hunted " in a place like this

Solo I took my 1st archery kill & elk (cow) this year. Opening morning in Utah, less than an hour after sunrise. Got the Mule on my Mathews and shooting the Evolution Hydes, aim for a pass through! Those broad heads are great. Shoots like a field point. Deployed, big wound channel, blood trail and pass through. Have 2 more tags I am hoping to fill this year.
Been hunting my ass off on public land Idaho. If any of us had these guys resources we would hunt private as well. No hate at all just got to work harder!
This was my first year elk hunting and my first year hunting with a bow. It was definitely a struggle on public land! I’m in Oregon and the unit we were going to hunt in was near forest fires so we scheduled it later in the month. By the time we got to the unit all the elk had been pushed onto private land. But the report that I heard was 14 bulls got taken out of just the area we were in. It was our fault for not planning accordingly and to do better research. We could have been one of those guys taking a bull out in the first week. Next year we are going to be set up and ready on opening day. Everything to me is experience earned and knowledge learned. But the overall experience was still incredible. Been practicing my elk bugle and had a bull respond to me a few times. Saw some beautiful country. I also had a mule deer tag so I was able to chase around some bucks and I got a pretty decent fork and horn. First deer with my bow. There are lots of hunting opportunities out there. Anyone who bitches and moans about people doing premium hunts are just jealous and lazy. I wish the conversation around hunting wasn’t between hunters arguing with each other and more about or love for the experience.

The place you guys hunted is a dream for any bow hunter! That place is chuck full of elk. I've watched the helicopters go to the public land side where I was to push the elk on the ranch you guys were on.

Trout fishing for wild fish is the exact same way honestly trout fishing in general you can directly compare it to any other type of hunting you have to put in the time find the places and you have to get away from where other people are and this could mean that a 6-inch fish is actually a trophy a 10-inch brook trout is a trophy it's just about understanding the surroundings that you're in and the pressure it receives and how that animal can thrive in those conditions it's not easy you have to completely think about food source air pressure how many human beings they see what etymology of the Flies you're throwing where do they sit in the water column and that might change a couple of times during the day are they going after nymphs or are they going after fully gestated flies and midges

I have no problem with these guys doing this. I have a problem with the company who sets it up. I have land that neighbors their fence line and they will fly helicopters all around, the weeks leading up to hunting season and push all the elk onto their property. They have done it for YEARS!! My property is crawling with elk all year but come the end of Aug the choppers start flying and herds upon herds are pushed onto their land. Then you won’t see a single elk again until after hunting season. So much for the little guy hunting public land.
I hear Rogan saying his bit about "this is how wild animals are, this is how they behave" as if to justify maybe that hunting pressured land is not "natural". We have been hunting since humans have existed, we are very much a part of the natural pressure on hunting. Natives, nomadic peoples followed herds and there were no seasons on game and animals were pressured. Its in the historical record in earliest recorded histories that animals were often hunted to low numbers and then people moved with the herds. I would argue that going into a OTC unit on public land is far more "natural" than hunting on a private reserve or private property with limited hunting interaction. One thing is those places are naturally going to have less predators because typically land owners manage for predators but secondly animals have just always been pressured by hunters since day one...
Yeah hunting areas very seldom hunted might be less natural. But I guess it depends on how we define natural? What was the state of nature where elk lived for most of their evolution? Yes they were hunted by humans but there were far less humans. Thoughts?
I think Cam probably hunted like the rest of us for a while, years ago. But those days are gone. And I'd still challenge any of these dudes to try to make content on a DIY public land Elk hunt right now. No guides. No outfitters. No tips. No BS. Straight up regular guy suckfest.
I’ve only made one DIY trip and it was this year. First ever archery elk experience and was fortunate to find success. I’ll continue the grind in the future but 10-5 years down the line I will certainly pay the money for the increased trophy/experience. Nothing wrong with putting the monetary value in increased odds of success and trophy size. Can’t hate them for having the means to make it happen.
If you’re serious about elk hunting, and by that I mean harvesting an elk every year and being in the 1% of hunters that do so; you need to start by not introducing excuses like over pressure and crowding. I’m into elk and have mature bulls bugling every time I go out on OTC public land hunts. It is possible, you just have to keep refining your process.

Joe got me into hunting and always greatful for that. I still chase elk ever year wether its on my tag or buddies. I agree that hunting on private properties is obviously better and if you can affort to do it, then I am all for it. But getting that public land bull will always trump that high fence or reservation trophy in my eyes. I still have hunted some limited units for high quality opportunties so I can totally relate to ideal Elk woods experience people are searching for. Its just a rare opportunity on public land.
It's hilarious to watch these guys for years talk about how "everybody needs to hunt, we need more hunters." And now they are talking about overcrowding in the woods. if theres too many people hunting, just spend more money, it's that simple. Yeah, thanks a lot, guys.
There are still plenty of over the counter unit opportunities in many states that people are successful every year, is it as easy as it was before more people were in the woods? Nope, but does it make it that much more fulfilling when you are successful? Hell yes it does!
Applied for a special draw unit in Montana, got lucky and drew in 2 years vs the standard 15 it takes, got luckier and shot a 7x6 day 2 into hunting. The preparation, cutting it up and the packing out meat with buddies…you just don’t get it until you do it. I blacked out and came to mid spider monkey jump into my buddy’s arms 😂
Hey man, I know I didn't sacrifice and do the things to be where these three are. I am lucky to even be as well off as I am now given how stupid I was in my early 20's. I have a camp on 70,000 acres of public. I love it and don't get mad at the guys that can afford great hunting on private. Some of those guys like to come down to my world because we get to do things they can't on their private. I get to enjoy my area all year. I get my 2 or 3 deer, a couple pigs, squirrels, and plenty fish.
Many haters out there these days. Don’t forget, this is just entertainment, a pod-cast and You have the freedom to listen or turn it off. All the hardcore DIYers listening would most likely go on one of these outfitted hunts if sponsored… it would be the hunt of a lifetime. Instead of hating listen to what they are saying, cause there are nuggets of intel out there. I remember being a kid at hunting camp 40 some odd years ago it was common to listen to those at the campfire with more knowledge than you hoping they would share a tidbit information as the fire winded down and we went to bed. No one ever hated on those conversions. If you truly love elk hunting, you can always learn from people who have had success in life in general. Stay frosty, keep hammering!
Another part that I’ve noticed is how your mindset has to change to be in the woods as opposed to civilization. When I go home my mind is still in the woods until I get a good night’s sleep.
The Elk definitely look less weary on "unit" hunt videos especially early season. Like to know how you guys view wolves changing their habits. Getting harder with them getting liberated in states plus more hunters.
working hard is only half the equation. You also have to know the right people to talk to and work for. Because if you work hard for someone who doesn't understand your value or underestimates the effort the hard work means nothing.
YOU can have the dream if you have the big bucks. OR famous rich friends.Contacts etc. Not many empty places these days. Nearly every creek or trail head has a camp. Glad i live in western australia. Next to know one huge area. In idaho at the moment,fires, heat next to know bugaling. Its changed in 17 years.
“Oregon isn’t great for elk hunting” Damn, Oregon is 38% the size of my province and has 107,000 more elk then we do. Their elk density is 1.35/sq mile. Ours is 0.10/sq mile.

Went and picked up another whitetail doe fawn tag. Still have my cow calf elk tag to fill and my wife's deer tag. It's been a successful season so far and it is only my 2nd season doing archery!

Just Spent 10 Days with my son Elk hunting in the backcountry of Montana.... hiked around 10 miles a day.... heard about 5 bugles..... saw about 50 elk ..... the wolvws the reintroduced have the elk silent...I wish we could have " hunted " in a place like this

Congrats fellas on the successful hunt. Enjoy all of y’all’s content. Been listening to JRE for years. I was listening to Endure 3 years ago I decided to buy a bow. Solo I took my 1st archery kill & elk (cow) this year. Opening morning in Utah, less than an hour after sunrise. Got the Mule on my Mathews and shooting the Evolution Hydes, aim for a pass through! Those broad heads are great. Shoots like a field point. Deployed, big wound channel, blood trail and pass through. Have 2 more tags I am hoping to fill this year.
Been hunting my ass off on public land Idaho. If any of us had these guys resources we would hunt private as well. No hate at all just got to work harder!

Hopefully it’s on KSL outdoors here in Utah, as I believe Adam Eakle hunted with them that week.
This was my first year elk hunting and my first year hunting with a bow. It was definitely a struggle on public land! I’m in Oregon and the unit we were going to hunt in was near forest fires so we scheduled it later in the month. By the time we got to the unit all the elk had been pushed onto private land. But the report that I heard was 14 bulls got taken out of just the area we were in. It was our fault for not planning accordingly and to do better research. We could have been one of those guys taking a bull out in the first week. Next year we are going to be set up and ready on opening day. Everything to me is experience earned and knowledge learned.
But the overall experience was still incredible. Been practicing my elk bugle and had a bull respond to me a few times. Saw some beautiful country. I also had a mule deer tag so I was able to chase around some bucks and I got a pretty decent fork and horn. First deer with my bow. There are lots of hunting opportunities out there. Anyone who bitches and moans about people doing premium hunts are just jealous and lazy. I wish the conversation around hunting wasn’t between hunters arguing with each other and more about or love for the experience.

The place you guys hunted is a dream for any bow hunter! That place is chuck full of elk. I've watched the helicopters go to the public land side where I was to push the elk on the ranch you guys were on.

Trout fishing for wild fish is the exact same way honestly trout fishing in general you can directly compare it to any other type of hunting you have to put in the time find the places and you have to get away from where other people are and this could mean that a 6-inch fish is actually a trophy a 10-inch brook trout is a trophy it's just about understanding the surroundings that you're in and the pressure it receives and how that animal can thrive in those conditions it's not easy you have to completely think about food source air pressure how many human beings they see what etymology of the Flies you're throwing where do they sit in the water column and that might change a couple of times during the day are they going after nymphs or are they going after fully gestated flies and midges

Lusk Archery Adventures is incredibly detailed and exciting to watch.
I have no problem with these guys doing this. I have a problem with the company who sets it up. I have land that neighbors their fence line and they will fly helicopters all around, the weeks leading up to hunting season and push all the elk onto their property. They have done it for YEARS!! My property is crawling with elk all year but come the end of Aug the choppers start flying and herds upon herds are pushed onto their land. Then you won’t see a single elk again until after hunting season. So much for the little guy hunting public land.

I hear Rogan saying his bit about "this is how wild animals are, this is how they behave" as if to justify maybe that hunting pressured land is not "natural".
We have been hunting since humans have existed, we are very much a part of the natural pressure on hunting.
Natives, nomadic peoples followed herds and there were no seasons on game and animals were pressured. Its in the historical record in earliest recorded histories that animals were often hunted to low numbers and then people moved with the herds.
I would argue that going into a OTC unit on public land is far more "natural" than hunting on a private reserve or private property with limited hunting interaction. One thing is those places are naturally going to have less predators because typically land owners manage for predators but secondly animals have just always been pressured by hunters since day one...
Yeah hunting areas very seldom hunted might be less natural. But I guess it depends on how we define natural? What was the state of nature where elk lived for most of their evolution? Yes they were hunted by humans but there were far less humans. Thoughts?

I think Cam probably hunted like the rest of us for a while, years ago. But those days are gone. And I'd still challenge any of these dudes to try to make content on a DIY public land Elk hunt right now. No guides. No outfitters. No tips. No BS. Straight up regular guy suckfest.

I’ve only made one DIY trip and it was this year. First ever archery elk experience and was fortunate to find success. I’ll continue the grind in the future but 10-5 years down the line I will certainly pay the money for the increased trophy/experience. Nothing wrong with putting the monetary value in increased odds of success and trophy size. Can’t hate them for having the means to make it happen.

Why would they want to?
If you’re serious about elk hunting, and by that I mean harvesting an elk every year and being in the 1% of hunters that do so; you need to start by not introducing excuses like over pressure and crowding. I’m into elk and have mature bulls bugling every time I go out on OTC public land hunts. It is possible, you just have to keep refining your process.

Joe got me into hunting and always greatful for that. I still chase elk ever year wether its on my tag or buddies. I agree that hunting on private properties is obviously better and if you can affort to do it, then I am all for it. But getting that public land bull will always trump that high fence or reservation trophy in my eyes. I still have hunted some limited units for high quality opportunties so I can totally relate to ideal Elk woods experience people are searching for. Its just a rare opportunity on public land.

It's hilarious to watch these guys for years talk about how "everybody needs to hunt, we need more hunters." And now they are talking about overcrowding in the woods. if theres too many people hunting, just spend more money, it's that simple. Yeah, thanks a lot, guys.
There are still plenty of over the counter unit opportunities in many states that people are successful every year, is it as easy as it was before more people were in the woods? Nope, but does it make it that much more fulfilling when you are successful? Hell yes it does!

Applied for a special draw unit in Montana, got lucky and drew in 2 years vs the standard 15 it takes, got luckier and shot a 7x6 day 2 into hunting. The preparation, cutting it up and the packing out meat with buddies…you just don’t get it until you do it. I blacked out and came to mid spider monkey jump into my buddy’s arms 😂

Hey man, I know I didn't sacrifice and do the things to be where these three are. I am lucky to even be as well off as I am now given how stupid I was in my early 20's. I have a camp on 70,000 acres of public. I love it and don't get mad at the guys that can afford great hunting on private. Some of those guys like to come down to my world because we get to do things they can't on their private. I get to enjoy my area all year. I get my 2 or 3 deer, a couple pigs, squirrels, and plenty fish.

Many haters out there these days. Don’t forget, this is just entertainment, a pod-cast and You have the freedom to listen or turn it off. All the hardcore DIYers listening would most likely go on one of these outfitted hunts if sponsored… it would be the hunt of a lifetime. Instead of hating listen to what they are saying, cause there are nuggets of intel out there. I remember being a kid at hunting camp 40 some odd years ago it was common to listen to those at the campfire with more knowledge than you hoping they would share a tidbit information as the fire winded down and we went to bed. No one ever hated on those conversions. If you truly love elk hunting, you can always learn from people who have had success in life in general. Stay frosty, keep hammering!

Couple years ago I wondered the same thing and a post said it was over 25,000. Probably more now.
San Carlos Apache is 20k plus cost for native guide. They have lower cost “management” tags for bulls that they don’t consider trophy quality.

The Elk definitely look less weary on "unit" hunt videos especially early season. Like to know how you guys view wolves changing their habits. Getting harder with them getting liberated in states plus more hunters.
working hard is only half the equation. You also have to know the right people to talk to and work for. Because if you work hard for someone who doesn't understand your value or underestimates the effort the hard work means nothing.

Next to know one huge area. In idaho at the moment,fires, heat next to know bugaling. Its changed in 17 years.
