A real pilot once told me the Tucano was equal to a Hurricane and its a debate which real Tucano pilots often have.
You learn something every day! I wouldn't have guessed that at all - I suppose I thought of the Tucano in terms of its ground attack capability and wouldn't have expected it to perform well in A2A, even in the context of other prop aircraft.
But have any of them flown a Hurricane? Because I don't see a Tucano winning the Battle of Britain
It would be interesting IMO to see the two square off. The Sea Fury would be an even more interesting opponent. To my knowledge, the Sea Fury was the pinnacle of piston driven fighter aircraft. I saw the one that flew in Britain a number of years ago, one time, at an airshow when I was there in 'ol blighty. That thing was impressive as all hell. Not a few months later, the chap had an engine problem and had to bail out. Bad luck indeed, those aircraft are rare and flying examples even more so.
Who do you think would win? Tucano, or the Sea Fury?
@@karlchilders5420 Well, you could also ask the question, 'how would a Hurricane do against a Sea Fury?'... to which the answer would be: 'with a skilled/experienced pilot, the Sea Fury would win every time... however a skilled Hurricane pilot would beat a novice in a Sea Fury a great deal of the time.'
This is down to the fact that the Sea Fury was vastly more powerful than any Hurricane variant and would be able to engage and disengage at will. An experienced pilot would know that there's no reason to ever be in danger. Just run away and line up another approach.
Novice pilots don't like to disengage... it doesn't look or feel like they imagine dogfighting ought to... People mistakenly think that dogfights are won with the stick but it is the throttle that matters most. Maneuvering looks cool but it is ultimately a defensive action that comes into play when there's no power advantage.
A dogfight between 2 Hurricanes would be more entertaining than a dogfight between 2 Sea Furies because the Hurricane was naturally very nimble, better suited to low power, high speed maneuvers... making it an awkward target. The golden age of dogfights was pretty much over as WW2 developed.
So... Tucano, or the Sea Fury? Can the Tucano out accelerate a Sea Fury in a straight line? The greater the shortfall, the closer it gets to the Hurricane.
@@GrahamMilkdrop There's an easy answer to how a Hurricane or Sea Fury would fare against a Super Tucano and it's "very badly indeed". The latter can carry all-aspect IR missiles which negate any advantages the warbirds might have. Modern aircraft are after all systems, not just airframes and engines and its things like avionics, sensors, and weapons that have advanced the most and made the biggest difference to combat effectiveness.
I love the whistling sounds in the Mustang. Awesome.
Mostang P51D is a very nice WWII plane I have the privilege to jump in the cockpit and have a ride next to the pilot estanding in the wing next to me and making sure that I don't touch anything that I don't have to while we were touing it to the hangar for some fuel and a small part repear when I work in the airport

@@schweizerluchs7146 modern weapons and sensors are as much a part of modern aircraft as their engines and airframes. A guy with a sword up against a bowman is also a legitimate comparison and while it may seem like a mismatch, both have their strengths and weaknesses which could decide the fight. In an old vs new air combat scenario you could mix things up by saying that while modern planes can use modern missiles, they'll be up against a very much larger number of WW2 aircraft to reflect how many of those were built. Could be fun to see how numerically unbalanced things needed to be to give each side similar odds of winning and find out which modern aircraft would be most dominant (my money is on the Hornet with a full load of 10 AMRAAMs and 2 AIM-9s plus the gun).

It’s quite interesting, the super Tucano was basically modeled after the mustang to just mimic the spirit of such a great aircraft back then. So the flight characteristics seem to be surprisingly similar in this, however they’re designed for different roles. The super tucano was built in the modern age where it can’t stand a chance to dogfight jets or even survive. So it’s not really all too well designed with the best maneuverability in mind, and is well purposed into the ground support role. The p-51 however, was designed with fighting other aircraft in mind so I would assume it has a slight edge in flight characteristics, while the tucano has a slight edge in technological advancements.
Yes my friend Tucano is a graund support aircraft and not a A2A combat aircraft it will do the job but not whit a full arm jet the Mustang P51D have more of a chance...well it had it history with jet's ( Me-262 ) and the rocket German Comet's over Germany in 1945

During the Korean War there were incredible, unconventional air conflicts on two different occasions-- The Hawker Sea Fury shot down a MIG-15 and The AU4 Corsair also shot down a MIG-15! It doesn't stop there, Vietnam-- A-1 Skyraider shoots down MIG-17 I believe on two separate occasions!! Request-- Creat a similar scenario! Possibly use either the P-51, Spitfire, or Super Tucano to represent the American Prop Plane, unless you have something better in mind. MIG-15 would be ideal however I think the MIG-21 could be cool as well! Please tell me what you think of these unconventional historical conflicts and recreating them??✌
you also had, the F7F Tigercat (one of the fastest prop planes ever put in production) shooting down two bi-planes at night over Korea. One extreme to the other.

One of japans greatest aces would throttle down and throw his plan in a flat spin. He would then gun it and come out right on your tail. You just couldn’t get away from the guy. He had like over two hundred kills!
The Tucano's true equivalents would be the P-40N, P-39Q, LaGG-3 or Hawker Typhoon. The rest of those fighters were designed a high altitude interceptors or in the P-51's case as an escort fighter. At altitude above 25k feet ASL, pretty sure the Tucano would be in trouble against all of them.
I think you might be right, but I should add here the fact that turboprop engines don't loose much power in altitude.
@@vasopel True but the the prop is the big difference here. The Tucano's is designed for low altitude CAS not high altitude combat. Both the Mustang H and Thunderbolt M&N models top speed exceed 460 mph at 25k Feet ASL and higher.
@@crgintx hm...their speed at high altitude wouldn't make them instantly superior, also the tucano helps the pilot by digitally and automatically compensate for various flying conditions (prop angles and stuff), meaning that equally skilled pilots have a better chance in the tucano,at least that's what I believe,any experts opinion would be welcomed :-)

Well, one thing I can say without watching the video is you'd loose a lot fewer Super Tucanos to landing accidents than pretty much any WWII fighter!
Probably way better engine reliability in the Tucano as well.

I was at the air show recently and as I looked up at the cowling of a C-130J engine I just got to thinking... what if somebody slapped one of those onto the front of a single seater?
This was kinda a close fight it ended with one survivor lol funny however true and it took you both a lil while to get The Last Mustang! My point being I think your underestimating The Warbirds, I'm certain The D-9 Dora, P-47 Thunderbolt, and as you said The Spitfire All would have provided a Close and Entertaining Fight! Especially in a One on One dogfight!👍
The rate of fire of the .50 cal on the super tucano is 2 times faster than the world war 2 fighters .50 cals.

@@RiXFortuna only 1000-3000 feet difference, speed is the same, Super tocano doesn't transform into a vibrating toy(pun intended) when pushing the red line, and he doesn't loose control in a dive unlike the p51.
OP is wrong. The Tucano's guns have a 50% higher rate over the A/N M2 (800rpm vs 1200rpm) not 200%. The A/N M3 introduced late in WW2 had an equal rate of fire 1200rpm.

The UAE want to examine an Iranian fighter. They have contracted with multiple mercenaries to steal an Iranian jet. They will pay the first pilot to land an Iranian jet at Dubai handsomely.
The Iranian base is defended by 20x T-72. You must land and taxi to within 50m of the parked aircraft before transferring (read: respawn) and take off. You must then return to Dubai and land safely despite 2x M1A2s shooting at you, thinking you are an Iranian aircraft.
Your jet will be armed with guns and unguided rockets. You may use these to either soften up the Iranian base and/or eliminate your competition.

The Brazilian A29 Super Tucano it is to support and attack on the floor there's a lot point for different guns and max velocity 580 Km/h other side P51 is designed for attack direct in the air others fighters aircraft but llWW some missions are attack to floor, the P51 flying around max 680Km/h and high altitudes however if considered the velocity in real faithiing this is no much vantage . The winner is A29 Super Tucano ! There are great probability if an Brazilian pilot in the crew of "Esquadrilha da Fumaça" "Sentá a Puá" team crew ! The P51 can't made some changes flying with comparation A29. Tks

Having flown the T-6 Texan II, a similar aircraft to the A-29, I've often wondered how it would compare to a P-51, etc. It's a super fun plane to fly.

How would warbirds go against a Red Bull air race plane, assuming it could have guns?
Warbirds probably have a speed advantage and would boom and zoom it. The Red Bull race planes are designed to be nimble and despite being race planes, aren't meant to hit the same speeds. Putting heavy armament on it would detract from that agility, so in the end, I would think an armed Red Bull race plane would lose out, being only slightly more agile but way slower.

Ever come across a flyer callsign *_Tutty?_* I knew him many years ago as top dog in an ArmA clan. Unity something or other. Former RAF helo pilot IIRC.

Interesting comparison. The Tucano has a few things going for it, it's a modern aircraft for a start, built with modern tech/materials, avionics and what have you. The WWII planes, they were pushing what they knew as far as they could in a situation where they were trying to win.
The turboprop engine has to count for something too, much more power at a much lighter weight.
Then there's tactics, how the fight opens etc.
A real can of worms but quite fascinating.
The Tucano wouldn't stand a chance. If it's turboshaft engine is 1600hp it's not more powerful that most of those WWII aircraft. A MkIX Spit with R-R Merlin 66 was rated at just over 2000hp when pushed to the maximum. Also with less all up weight and much lighter wing loading, the Spit (and almost all other aircraft in this video) would engage and disengage at will with ease...
@@julianneale6128 Get real. There's a reason we stopped going for faster and faster planes. It's called radars and missiles. The tucano happens to equip both (sorta, it has a datalink). wwII fighters may look cool, but they are a relic of a distant past. It completely shits on wwII fighters while not even being a fighter itself.

@@julianneale6128 The video was comparing the a29 in a dogfight vs warbirds, but many comments - including OP's - implied the systems as their wholes ("and what have you"). What do they have? All aspect a2a missiles; thermal imagers & night vision goggles; datalinks to receive radar information.
The airframe may be slightly slower in max speed and ceiling, it wasn't designed as a fighter in the first place, but the system as a whole is much superior. No pilot will take a mustang or spitfire over a super tucano.

The modern aerodynamics improves your chances but they were designed as pure fighters and a 5% advantage is all it takes to get the kills.
Can it? Sure, after all the outdated gullwinged P11 was able to score victories against BF109s over Poland, where as the Tucano has a 60 year advantage in tech over WW2 warbirds.

The supertucano performs even better because it is a turboprop. P51 do not get better higher.. they lose less perforamcne than other birds of the same period, but modern turboprop engines lose even less.
Out dogfight the warbirds? No way. If the fight is in gun to gun fights as Warbirds are, the Tucanos is in a run for its life. The only way it can beat the warbirds is that Tucanos were armed with guided missiles that warbirds not designed to

Cap, can you make some custom mission to see if the warbirds have any usage in modern air combat?
The reason behind this is the Super Tucanno with props fighting in modern days as close air support. Yet this particular video adding my curiousity about the WW2 era warbird usage in modern combat, i.e. CAS or FAC etc. Can they become the equivalent of "Po-2 and F-86" in terms of Warbird and F-15. Sure they can out ACM them but warbird have none BVR capability, so how about the Tucanno?
Edit: I also wondering this stuff back then when you started an Iron campaign (sorry if I were wrong, forget that name lol) in which the warbirds cost cheaper that the jets, yet in the 'nam the Skyraider proofed themself to be a cheaper alternatives than the F-105 in case of shot down
Interesting idea. I suspect the difficulty would be that effective CAS is nearly always done with guided weapons these days which wouldn't work without the sensors and targeting equipment in the aircraft. In a sense the Super Tucano is a bit like a warbird that's been updated with modern avionics and systems to use the latest weapons.
Warbirds could definitely use their guns, rockets and unguided bombs for CAS. Would be interesting to see how accurate they were and what kind of air defence environment they could operate in without losing too many aircraft.
The idea with the tucano is a modern close air suport. Even with rockets and machine guns, it can follow datalink and laser targets.
The problem with WWII aircrafts in modern scenario is that nowadays it isn't allowed to simple lit a city on fire with bombs and dumb rockets. You need to be precise. And you can't hit your own troops in the process.

Ok the Tucano is more a attack graund platform and not a A2A plane is fast and we'll arme to defend it self but a Mostang P51D is a A2A war plane made to escort and defend The B-17 from german planes like ME-109F and the ME-262 jet....and yes the Tucano is very good and capable in A2A combat but not with Mostang P51D and a WWII Ace pilot . ..I will go for the P51D ... And the Split Fire will also be a good choice
I shot down 4 f16 in the A-29B, literally can't out-turn me. (If you can preserve your aim9 you will have the advantage, the f16 can't run away or he will eat a fox2, and he can't slow enough to get behind you/can't turn hard enough to stay close and make your fox2 useless,but if you used your aim9s there is no more threat to going straight.) If the f16 stays away he will win for sure, but he does the mistake of getting close this turboprop will make him regret he was born.

Obviously not, old wwII junk will always be better than the latest avionics, datalinks, and air-to-air missiles. That's why, after reading this comment section, the USA decided to sell all their tucanos and replace them with wwII fighters.

Actually it is fun, but not a real measure. Of course Super Tucano is not design to fight other fighters.
In reality Super Tucano would win it before they even see each other... radar and high performance missiles air-air would make it a short fight. Also Super Tucano could use the radar to position with the sun behind and use the .50s.
But ok, imagining a Dog Fight with both without radar and missiles... and with pilots with same capacity, the best fighters on 2º WW would defeat the Super Tucano.

I've said this before, just so everyone has the proper terminology:
BFM ( as in Basic Fighter Manuevers ) is dealing with a 1 vs 1 only engagement. BFM is 1v1 set piece maneuvering to a desired end result. ACM ( as in Air Combat Manuevers ) is dealing with a 2 vs 1 engagement (or more). ACM is 2v1 (or more) and involves the practice of initial defensive or offensive moves with or against a formation (i.e., 2 ship or more) vs a single ship, or another formation.
You have said it before but it's not how the US Navy define ACM. From BASIC FIGHTER MANEUVERING (BFM) ADVANCED NFO T-45C/VMTS - the Flight Training Instruction document used by Naval Air Training Command, Corpus Christi:
"Even in the largest multi-plane engagements, for that brief moment when the decision is made to engage an opponent, aircrew are involved in a 1v1 engagement. Strike Fighter aircrew must be proficient at 1v1 Air Combat Maneuvering (ACM) to minimize time-to-kill and ensure they leave engagements unscathed."
Oh look, ACM includes 1v1 engagements! You can look at USAF training manuals and they'll say the same thing - 1v1 is a critically important part of ACM.
BFM is about utilising manoeuvring techniques to achieve or deny a positional advantage from which to then deploy a weapon or deny your opponent the opportunity to shoot. ACM is about incorporating BFM into wider situational awareness and understanding of factors like the presence of friendly or enemy wingmen, aircraft performance, capabilities of sensors and weapons systems, ECM, the impact of weather, the presence of ground-based anti-air assets (friendly or otherwise), use of terrain, etc to formulate an effective tactical approach to a fight. If BFM is knowing how the pieces on a chessboard move then ACM is understanding the game and knowing the moves the other player will make well before he does.
@@trolleriffic Yep, and there are also other pubs, used in the training command, that also square it away and say it *just* as defined. You practice BFM *first* then using those skills, you learn ACM. Don't take my word for it. Ask any other pilot you like, ask Mover. Ask Gonky. Robin Fucking Olds said the same thing. This transcends Navy/Chair Force. This is basic tactics we use across the US military. The Navy absolutely defined it the way I did, because it is how I was trained. They trained me, so there you have it. Having said *that* if something changed at flight school, and I doubt this would've changed, they'd update stuff and newer folks would have a different understanding. However, as I said, this isn't the sort of thing that is changed. Stuff that has changed, TOPGUN isn't on its own anymore, it's part of NSAWC, and they have made other refinements to it and the strike school that was its counterpart.
So let's recap, as I said, BFM is the BASIC SKILLS you learn BEFORE ACM. You learn BFM, then you learn ACM. The one, supports the other. Period, dot, the end, full stop.
@@trolleriffic by the way, I have to point out the document you mention is ABOUT ACM. So, it's entire point is slanted to that purpose of instruction during it's period of instruction. BFM is covered separately, and PRIOR to this in the syllabus. You can go look it up. When I was there we didn't have the T-45. We had the TA-4. The 45 looks like a nice training jet, I'm sure they get good use out of it. I participated in the USAF UPT training program as an instructor. I was one of the first Marines to do this. I am the only one, as far as I am aware, that did so at Laughlin AFB. 47th FTW there. They too cover BFM, then ACM later. Most of the ACM work however is done at their B course when they get to their MWS pipeline (F-15, F-16, etc..).

Put a good pilot in the cockpit of that warbird, and watch the Mustang cut through your tail. True that the Mustang does not have a bore sight or a HUD which displays all sorts of info like your Tucano HUD does, but it was designed for A2A battle and the Tucano was designed for strafing. So, you do the math
The math is the tucano carries a datalink (gets radar info from other sources) and all aspect air-to-air missiles. Stop living in the past, Mustangs are wwII fighters, against that sort of equipement they wouldn't do shit except make the airforce have to recruit another pilot.

It's everything on modern warfare. WWII fans are completely out of their mind in this comment section. The truth is the super tucano would get them on their radar (datalink actually, but still) and send a missile on their face. End of story.
It doesn't matter that X fighter was 100km/h faster or had an extra 400hp. It's a small diference on max speed, but on all the rest, it's a 1000% advantage for the modern aircraft. Remember why we stopped going for faster and faster planes in the first place? Modern avionics, radar, missiles. Those people are arguing an SR71 with .50 cals would win over the F-22. Boomer non-sense.

@sneaop sneatorter the super tucano was designed from the outset as an air interceptor for low performance aircraft. They're routinely used by the Brazilian Air Force to intercept low flying drug running airplanes. In the last 4-5 years they shot down 4 planes over Brazilian airspace.
P-47 would be cool to see modernized with a turboprop and an improved airframe and technology
The A-29 can follow radar indications using datalink from a surveillance aircraft, and intercept another aircrats using it. It's how they use it at the Brazilian border. There is plans to it receive the thermo sensor that will equip the Gripen NG from Brazilian air force.

Are you sure about that? Read the specs of each; they'd each perform better in different envelopes, so there's situations where the P-51 would be better but others where the Tucano would almost certainly have an edge. The Tucano has a more advanced wing profile, giving it a similar advantage over Mustang that the Mustang had over lots of earlier WWII fighters. It's quite a bit lighter with similar power so it climbs faster and loses less power as it climbs because it's a gas turbine instead of a piston engine. It's got a slimmer nose/better lines of sight and a far more advanced gun sight. It's as much a fighter as the British Hawk is in some variants. No, it's not it's primary role but it's intended to train fighter pilots and to perform aerobatics and to engage aerial targets, it'll do it just fine.
The P-51 has a higher service ceiling and a higher top speed and both of those can be decisive when pilots are able to use them to their advantage, but not when they're not. If the P-51s were forced to dive and engage the Tucanos they'd have an initial advantage but if they got caught up dogfighting them it they'd give the advantage back to the Tucanos. The Mustangs could control the tempo of combat so long as they didn't get too caught up on engaging. That said they can't climb to disengage unless they're at the top of the Tucano's ceiling and diving to escape would leave them vulnerable as they climb through the area they can't match the Tucano.
Having just started watching, I don't think the Tucano would fare well at all. It was simply not designed for air to air role against other fighters, just illegal flying General Aviation (Civilian) prop aircraft and COIN/CAS.

@@grimreapers During the Korean War there were incredible, unconventional air conflicts on two different occasions-- The Hawker Sea Fury shot down a MIG-15 and The AU4 Corsair also shot down a MIG-15! It doesn't stop there, Vietnam-- A-1 Skyraider shoots down MIG-17 I believe on two separate occasions!! Request-- Creat a similar scenario! Possibly use either the P-51, Spitfire, or Super Tucano to represent the American Prop Plane, unless you have something better in mind. MIG-15 would be ideal however I think the MIG-21 could be cool as well! Please tell me what you think of these unconventional historical conflicts and recreating them??✌

wrong. Super tucano has better avionics, better gyro aim, being turboprop it handles negative g better. It demands far less workload of the pilot to keep it flying at max performance. Its aerodynamics is superior and it suffer far less from high AOA. It is only disadvantage is max speed.

I remember flying the FSX pc9 long ago, gave it up for X-Plane but now I have a system that can handle DCS I would kill for a good version of the PC9 or PC21!
