- For a few years, it seemed major automakers had given up on the midsize truck segment. Now, however, with the re-emergence of the Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon, and the introduction of an all-new Toyota Tacoma for 2016, one of the staples of the field, the Nissan Frontier, finds itself lagging behind the competition. Can its reasonable off-road performance and lower starting price win shoppers over, or is this just a truck desperate for a redesign?
If you’re looking for a truck that drives like... well, a truck, then the Frontier isn’t a bad choice. Still living on a 12-year-old platform, the Frontier’s road manners don’t measure up well with the new era of pickups, and the engine and transmission only add to the workman-like charm of what’s quickly becoming an outdated product.
The Frontier Pro-4X’s 4.0-liter V6 features variable valve timing and direct injection, and it makes a reasonable 261 hp and 281 lb-ft of torque, but those numbers show up later in the power band than we’d like. All in all, this engine paired with the Frontier’s 5-speed automatic transmission delivers 15 mpg city/ 21 highway.
If you’d rather your truck not coddle you with the latest and greatest interior features, the Frontier should suit you just fine. Hard plastics and unforgiving seats earn negative attention in the cabin.
Price distinguishes the Frontier from the pack in a positive way. Nissan’s small pickup starts at $18,290, and the price of the Pro-4X Mike tested was $36,525. I own a 2012 Pro4X and absolutely love it! Its been flawless and seems to be extremely well built. I don't care that its old, hell, that's what I love about it! In fact, I'm considering buying another one before they change the body style and screw it all up.

I tested a 2013 Pro4X and finally bought a brand new 2016 SV 4x4 long bed and this was after test driving the Colorado, Canyon and Tacoma. We get a lot of snow and my Frontier holds its ground like a tank. I love every bit of the old school feel, look and handling.
I was shopping for trucks a week ago. While I wasn't considering a frontier I bought one.After looking at the Tacoma I realized I didn't want to spend Tacoma money. I was negotiating a deal for a Colorado that I liked, when I stopped and looked at a Frontier on the way home. To end my story, I now own a Frontier. Everything you mentioned as a negative fit me perfect. And for a lot less money.
C Morris wish I would have done that. Instead I leased a lousy Colorado. I’m throwing money away month after month on a lease I will not purchase. Complete garbage. I need to test drive a pro4x. I’m either going second gen taco or frontier

Dude i am 6'-3" i have no issue getting in and out of my Trucks seat and I have a friend that is 6'4 265 and he sits in the back no complaint so ............. i'll just leave it right there
I did drive the competition like you said. Thats why I bought the frontier. The frontier was clearly the winner. The price is right also.
Agree... Dad has a 2007 with 400k on it.. I just traded my 2010 with 300k on it for a 2019. It's the same truck.. old reliable.. Why screw around with other brands that are constantly having issues (oil consumption, suspension issues, electronics issues, etc.)

Here's why I like my 2014 Nissan Frontier: First, it has gobs of power. Second, it drives very well on the road. Third, I took it on the Buck Rock Jeep trail with stock lift and stock suspension and it cruised it so well that the people in the other (very non stock) truck that I was following kept commenting about how well it did. Yes, I have some complaints about the Nissan, but none of them are big enough to keep me out of it.
Still a great looking truck that is rock solid dependable. It would be my choice in this segment.
Agreed. In fact, I'm picking up my Pro 4x tomorrow. I got an amazing deal on a demo that I couldn't pass up. I can't wait to get it on some trails. Some people just don't get the appeal of a simple yet capable truck like this. This is the most capable truck in the class, in my opinion, and I'd easily choose it over the others, especially considering the huge cost difference between their off road versions.

I love my 15 frontier. Best truck I ever owned. F this guy. Oh and a used Tacoma with 35k miles on it in the same year was 34k. Got my pro 4 X with 8k on it for 27k. That was 2 years ago. Bring it on the beach. Tow my boat with it. Get compliments on it all the time and I can trust the reliability of something that's been refined for 12 years. Like the fact he didn't mention in the Tacoma you feel like you're sitting on the floor.
I think you're taking the negativity way over the top. I really love my Frontier. In fact I like it better than the F-150 crew cab Lariat that I used to own.
I like the looks and I don't mind the plastic parts because they are easy to clean! I just traded in a 2016 Chevy Colorado in to get a new 2017 Frontier Pro4x and I love it! I had the Chevy Colorado for a year and did not like the stitching in the seats digging into my left thigh and had some problems with the gps freezing up while on a trip from Wisconsin to New York and the electronic steering went out once. The air conditioning would also come on from time to time when I it was not selected. Also no heated rear mirrors on the Colorado, which the frontier has, which is nice with a cap on the back in snowy conditions.
The round selector dial on the Colorado for 2x, 4xhi and 4xlo was right next to my left knee which I accidentally bumped twice and was driving in 4 wheel drive not knowing it, as there is no 4 wheel drive indicator in the dash panel, the Frontier's switch in nicely placed on the right side away from the knees and also has a 4 wheel drive indicator in the dash panel.
The Colorado got 19-20 miles to the gallon while the Frontier gets about 17-18 miles to the gallon so far. The Frontier has much better get up and go when I step on the gas when passing or entering a highway. The Colorado had an 8 inch info screen while the Frontier is just less than 6” in size which is ok for me. The 2017 Frontier was 2 thousand dollars cheaper that the 2016 Chevy Colorado. The Frontier also has a moon roof and backup sensors.
@Lala Cupcake I bought a pro 4X with a premium package fully loaded for 35000. Right now you can even get better deals.

I'm in the market for a slightly used midsize truck. That's why I checked out reviews for 2016. I drove a new Frontier and Tacoma the other day. I actually liked the Frontier better. It felt smoother and less cramped that the Tacoma. I'm 5'10" and didn't notice either truck having headroom space issues but the Tacoma felt a little less roomy in the cabin overall. Here is the real kicker, a used Frontier is FAR less than a comparable used Tacoma! I mean like $5-10k less! Used Tacomas are stupid expensive. I get it, it's a Toyota, they run forever, blah blah blah. For $15k I can get a 3-4 year old Frontier with under 50k miles. 10 year old Tacomas with 100k are still more than that!!! There is no way a Tacoma is twice as good as a Frontier. Just no way. If I were buying new, Tacoma is the way to go because the used market is silly and I can sell it after its all used up for a crazy price but anyone buying a used Tacoma is getting hosed if they pay going rates.
i drove the taco 3.5 and Frontier 4.0. bought the frontier.
I've heard the Tacoma is gutless. These days all people do is try to get the best mileage, and don't care how the vehicles drive.
Yeah the 2nd gen taco with its 4.0 5 speed is much better than the new engine.
I want my truck to be a truck, not a wannabe spaceship like the most recent entries from the competitors in this class. Nissan Frontier; last of a dying but wonderful breed of real, honest trucks.
i just bought i used 2013 frontier pro 4x....i love it! Drives like a truck, not a car/truck or a suv. I test drove a tacoma and while it was nice i gotta say i liked how the frontier felt.
I just bought one and I had a budget. Of the 5 reasonably sized trucks available, Nissan was the only truck that I could price under $30K and give me the features I determined mandatory. So it was either a new Nissan or a used truck so either way it was older technology.

The Frontier is a great truck it hauls great it is awesome off road and in snow. It gets all of my needs done and it is less money from Toyota it’s more comfortable to. It been a great ride for me
I have a 2019 frontier pro 4x and it is the best truck I've ever owned. Here is my list of previous trucks. 2005 dodge 2500 diesel, 2009 dodge 1500 V8, 2010 dodge 3500 diesel, 2015 f150 eco boost, 2019 frontier pro 4x. All my trucks are used very hard for towing and hunting. All had their place and purpose at the time but not a single one of those holds a candle to the frontier weather it's off road or running to the grocery store. All of the issues that a vehicle has have long been resolved as the platform is 15 years old and in all reality it has all the same technology as the new trucks as long as you are able to drive and don't need the truck to drive for you. The screen is small in the dash but it's hard to watch a movie while driving and the backup camera only needs to show you that there is not a child behind you. If you are looking for a great reliable vehicle that will never leave you stranded and always brings you home than get a 2019 or older frontier.

I’ve owned so many nissans in the past and three Datsun and never had any issues. My favorite was the 2013 Titan crew cab, unfortunately I had to sell it. So now I have a 2011 Nissan Frontier crew cab and I love it. Never any issues and it looks good.

You are so wrong on this truck. I just rented one last week for 3 days, and loved it. It was quiet on the interstate ar 75 mph, felt so solid and everything was simple to use. Sure it has hard plastics (which are easy to clean), and has a small touchscreen. But it was perfect for my needs. Strong engine, smooth transmission, comfortable seats.

bikephil Strange, because I'm agreeing with you. Great, solid, dependable truck for the price. Just not your best purchase if you NEED your vehicle to have all the latest tech.
I have a 2014 Frontier and I love it. I have a Tundra but I find myself driving my Frontier day to day. It just feels more like a truck that a man should drive than the competition. You can find one for a great price. it's also just fun to drive.
I just bought a 2016 Desert Runner with 11,000 miles and I love it. This guy is full of crap in this review. He is so stuck on the truck not being redesigned that he can't see the good things about it. The truck has great power it's quiet and good looking. Yes there are nicer trucks out there but you will pay much more for them. The Frontier is a lot of truck for the money. So if you want a very nice and capable truck at a reasonable price I highly recommend the Frontier. If you want the latest and greatest then pay $35,000 or so and get a fancy new Tacoma or Colorado. I'll keep that extra $14,000 that I saved and use it on hunting and fishing trips in my old school Frontier.

I love my 2015 Frontier SV with the V6 automatic transmission. Ride is great and I don't have the problems this guy has at 5'10". Its easy to maintain for routine oil and filter changes. I wish the gas mileage was better so I agree on this point. I bought it used from an old retired couple that barely used it and kept it in the garage. The old guy put a nice hardtop on it too. It had 25K miles for $13 K.

The frontier grows on me every time I drive mine. I do not want the new one either. The thing is very fast…..handles great too!

I have a 2016 frontier SV 4wd and it currently has 152,000 miles on it. Bought it used in 2020 - had just over 80k on it. Truck has an after market leer cap (love it) and most options, except leather and a moonroof. Paid $20k for it. Seems like a steal now. I priced out used tacomas but they were all closing in on $30k. I had a Tacoma many years back (a 2000 2.7L 5 speed) but the frame got recalled - Toyota customer service was fantastic and they repurchased it - but ever since then I was weary about frame rot.
As far as my Frontier, I have had a ero issues so far. Just regular wear and tear items like brakes and front wheel bearings.
I tow a 4000 pound camper through the north woods of Maine (down hours of logging roads) with no problem. After
Wife, kids and gear we are close to towing 5800 pounds. Gas mileage sucks but it’s a truck, what do you expect. It rides pretty good for a truck too. Turning radius sucks. It’s like trying to maneuver a battleship.
I would buy another one.
Lower MSRP, Skid Plates, and everything else included, it can get me to my fishing spots that my current vehicle can not get too and it still looks good with those nice leather seats. Win win if you ask me. Less stuff to break down over time without all the tech built in.
The 4x4 Frontier is a beast. It's quieter on the inside than a 2002-2009 4runner and that says something. In a desert runner edition the truck is very capable but in pro-4x its hard to beat. With the price as a bench mark its the best. The engine is loud when pushed but that's fine by me, its a truck. I'd rather take a new Frontier off-road than a Chevy. The only complaint I have is that cheezy roof rack. This reviewer looks tall. So I'd say he'd have a bad seating position in a Tacoma too.
6'4", so you're not wrong. I still found the seats way too shallow and short and I couldn't get them anywhere near far enough back. Spent a lot of time in a lot of trucks (my first vehicle was a GMC Sonoma) and this one was a little worse than the rest.
Not having a lot of electronic garbage is a huge plus when going off road. All this new tech fails and then your vehicle is SoL.
These aren't for people over 6ft tbh. I'm 5'8 this would be perfect for me

I bought a frontier a little over a month ago. I'm 6'1" and have no problems fitting in it. This is the doucheiest review I've ever seen. I'm in the truck 3-4 hours a day some days and no complaints on the seats. The only issue I have with this truck IS the fuel economy, but you trade that for a bigger engine and best towing capacity in its class. A truck is a truck, dont expect to save money at the pump that's just stupid..

I’ve driven all 3 and the Frontier Pro4x is my choice. The price of the others is outrageous and all they do is hunt for gears. The mileage on my TRD pro was 10 mpg cause you have to be in the throttle all the time cause the power is so high in the rpm. Colorado is the same way and doesn’t offer a manual which for that motor would be the perfect match. You HAVE TO do a trans tune on the Colorado or it shifts all over. The mpg on it weren’t much better 15.5 on the v6. I’m getting a frontier now because it’s the most usable to drive out of the 3 which is why they’re running around everywhere. Manual trans too. HUGE SELLING POINT FOR ME.
LOL. Frontier is still the best in its class. The looks of the Frontier have not changed. However, it's still looks the better than a Tacoma.
Own a 2014 VW TDI Golf here in Canada that is to be bought back over the coming months. Pretty much set on replacing it with a 2017 King Cab Pro 4X w/ 6spd Manual gearbox. In our market at least it's about $10,000 less than a AccessCab TRD Off-road Tacoma 6spd Manual. Also Nissan will finance for 1.9% where Toyota wants 5.9%. Considering both are equally capable off-road, I'll go Frontier no question. Plus, newer vehicles all suffer from an over abundance of tech that detracts from the actual joy of driving. That's my 2 cents. Long live the last gen mid size trucks.

Michael Perkins yeah, just my luck. My first ever VW purchase had to be a TDI. The US owners are already dropping their cars off while we are still waiting until March 31 for our settlement to be approved. We also got quite a bit less than US owners did. Really crappy situation all around.

I drove the tacoma it felt front end heavy and underpowered I ultimately bought the frontier I liked it better overall.

Good overall review. I own a 17 Pro-4x Frontier and at 6'5" I would like the driver seat to go back a little further also. I also felt the same way in the Tacoma. I personally think the Frontier is the better buy, that's why I purchased it......
Bill Moore Agreed. How is it the trucks keep getting bigger, yet they're still to small inside? I fit fine in my '96 Sonoma. 2-door bench, too!
Great point. If it wasn't for the little bit of extra leg room that I would prefer, and a telescoping steering wheel that would accompany it, IMO the Frontier would be my perfect little truck. I like the tried and true design, the engine and tranny combo, having separate non-interconnected climate controls that have nothing to do with the stereo and the solid build materials that Nissan used in the Frontier, that again, has stood the test of time and is reliable. When I drove the latest GM midsize trucks, I personally didn't get the feeling that the build quality of the truck would stand the test of time. I've had problems with the recent versions of GM full size trucks in the past that had the latest tech gadgets and were fully loaded. It came back to reliable build quality. The Tacoma is a great truck but I'm not a fan of its looks exterior and interior. Now that I'm in my 40's, I guess I'm just a little old school when it comes to the exterior and interior look that I go for. Trendy designs do nothing for me.

The 2021 one will come out late next year and we'll still be based on the F Alpha but will have new sheet metal and the V6 twin turbo 300 horsepower and 7 speed transmission should have updated Center stack as well.
@Michael Perkins... I believe that the reason that you are getting all of the "your review sucked" comments is because you started it and stayed on the negatives about this truck way too long. People generally will remember the negatives more than the positives of a review. Maybe consider using a different format next time

The Ram was great but I'm seeking the midsize truck market now. Honestly, not having come from "high tech" stuff, the Frontier seems perfect for me based on price and reliability...similar to what you mentioned in your video. The Chevy and Tacoma cost a bit more. Although price isn't my main concern, it certainly plays a role when looking for a "truck" and not a "cartruck". I don't wish for the high frills of a SUV or the like. Looking for a truck. Thanks again for posting the review.
Ok, so I just test drove the Frontier... and I hated it. This video is pretty much spot on with exactly the feelings I had towards it. There was power and torque however the steering, the maneuverability, the lack of leg room, the crappy right arm rest, the poor steering radius, the vibratory feel in the seat at idle, and the overall feeling of a not very easy to steer truck. It really is too bad because I love the way it looks. One positive note, did feel very solid. And I'm sure the Nissan reliability is there. It just seems extremely outdated. And I don't mean that in a way of looking for a high frills truck.

I just bought a 2016 Nissan SV frontier 4x4 pickup 69,000 on it after last winter getting stuck in a car very impressive little truck love the old school feel of it still figuring out the controls of it the V6 4.0 engine very powerful shouldn't have no issues this winter
I happen to like the old school exterior styling of the Frontier. Do not like the Tacoma looks at all. When looking for a truck I am not looking for luxury, if I was I'd look at a F-150 King Ranch. Is the Frontier good off road and utilitarian? It is and that's why I have decided on it as opposed to other midsize trucks. It is also reliable and simple. A plus in my book. Less electronics = less problems. The price helps as well. My two cents.

I drove the Taco and Frontier. The Taco felt like I was sitting on the floor. The position wasn't comfortable for my 6"1" frame. I didn't drive the Canyon as I am not a GM Fan. It seemed like Toyota cut corners, like putting drum brakes on their rear axels. Also, even though the Frontier is very dated, it has more torque than the Tacoma. The Nissan felt more athletic to me. I think this review was accurate though stating the Nissan is dated, thus a good bargain. I ended up buying the Frontier.
No there's no feeling like it you are sitting on the floor on a Tacoma. With the high floor and low roofline there is no other way to sit. The Tacoma is all about styling. Functionality takes a second seat.
how about a review of the base model Frontier? i am considering buying it because it is so cheap (pluss it is refreshing to see manual transmissions in a truck these days)

For the price and what I intend to do with my Nissan Frontier 2016 SV 4wd it's perfect. I was able to purchase my truck for under 28K compared to the Tacoma or the Ridgeline where the price was way over my price range. Would love to have either but I couldn't imagine my monthly payment would have been. One draw back for me is how thirsty this truck is, I am getting around 16mpg city and around 22 hwy. but I knew that coming in. Overall I am very happy with my purchase even if the interior is dated.

I just actually really hate it when people knock this Truck and then make fun of it really kinda ticks me off this is a great and wonderful Truck so people stop bashing it it will definitely always impress you so and go out and buy one just like I want to buy myself a used one
i bought a 2016 frontier in spring of 2018. king cab. they say its a mid size truck, like my 2001 Dakota. but feels bigger. the V6 engine has all the power youll need.
It is a truck. Get over it. I need one to haul stuff and I listen to AM radio news talk. I have a flip phone and I wear jeans and clunky boots to work every day so I just need something that works and doesn't cost an arm and a leg.
Nissan kept the old Frontier platform because it actually works. Mayb Fabio needs a truck that attracts more boyfriends? His personality sure isn't reeling them in.
I feel like owning a second gen frontier is like buying the new iPhone. It’s simple to use, simple to diagnose problems, very user friendly, and basic.

I chose the frontier because of it's size, I bought a king cab SV 4x2. The other manufacturer trucks won't fit in my garage. They are also getting more and more car like. Their bed heights are higher off the ground. The bed depth is higher. I carry motorcycles in mine. Plus, the other trucks when equally equipped are thousands more.

He is too tall for the truck which gave him a bad impression from the start. Hard to love a vehicle you cannot get comfortable in. I like the Nissan, it looks like a truck, it handles like a truck, it rides like a truck because IT IS A TRUCK!

Just cause they’re are both vq engines does not make them the same it’s not “basically a bored 3.5” they’re a lot more going on there and they’re much different engines
Great review! Nissan really needs to redesign that vehicle. It is getting way too long in the tooth. This truck is for the person that wants a simple truck and doesn't fully care about having the latest technology. This truck would probably be very reliable considering it doesn't have that much complicated technology. Also, it has been around for so long so buying replacement parts would probably be cheaper than the competition as well. Keep up the great work!

Not many. Still a fair point to bring up for the taller folks out there. Also, I drove a 1996 GMC Sonoma for years, and I didn't have the same issues.
Have you test drove the Tacoma? I am 6 feet tall and with the sunroof package my head hits against the left side along the door where they placed padding around the sunroof rails. Not an issue for me with tge Frontier sunroof package I test drove. Currently have a 2010 Tacoma and have no issues with that truck for headroom, albeit with no sunroof.
No, I haven't been in a new Tacoma. My problem is usually leg room rather than head room.

not only that they only offer that puniy pathtic 5 5 inch bed hell with that that is absolutley no practical value i have mine with the 6 foot 1 in bed in the frontier and the crew cab with the 4.0 litre v6 great midsize pick up
I'm seriously considering buying a Nissan frontier, just wondering if you still like yours? Does the 4.0 engine truly have enough power? Gonna test drive a 2019 with 27,000 on it for $20,000. Any information, positive or negative would be greatly appreciated, thx

I agree, this is the new - older truck you can buy, but is simply an excellent option. But this guy, i think he dont like this vehicle, all the review spend the time talking only bad things about the truck... Is old, it have the worst seats, the outdated image... bla bla bla... The truck is great.
I don't need a vehicle that extends to my "digital world" sounds like a first World problem. Give me a dependable truck that gets at least 20ish on the hwy, bluetooth and mayybe heated seats and i'm good 🎉 sometimes less is truely more.
